Jacob
I stop the car feet away from the cabin that's surrounded by cops and crime scene investigators. The cabin is located on the outskirts of Forks, deep in the forest where it could easily be missed. When Tanya told me to meet her here I wasn't quite sure what I was walking into. It's been a week since we told Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen about their spouses affairs, and we haven't been able to find any new leads since.
I bend under the yellow tape and walk to Tanya, who is talking to a police officer and sends him away when she sees me.
"What do we have?" I ask. "Please tell me it's something good."
Tanya hands me a folder. "We were looking into Mr. and Mrs. Swan's banking accounts. They have separate accounts and in his records, we found the purchase of this property under Rosalie Cullen's name, alongside this BMW. This is probably the spot they used to see each other." She points to the bright red BMW parked a few feet away from us and walks me to it, pointing to the scratch marks and the dent on the side of the hood. "This could be the car we were looking for."
"The car that ran Emmett's Jeep off the road," I said to myself. The scratches and indentations correlated with the dent on the side of the Jeep. We knew we were looking for a second car since day one. The prints on the Jeep indicate that Emmett was the one driving it, so my best guess was that they were planning on dropping the BMW here.
The Jeep never made it here, so how the hell did the BMW make it? Was it Rosalie? Was she nearby?
"Have you checked for fingerprints?"
"We did. There's blood in the car on the passenger side, but beside that, the car is spotless. Not a single fingerprint, not even a piece of hair."
"Blood? Have you sent it to the lab?"
"It's already on its way."
What happened on the ride here? Did Rosalie really drive Emmett off the road? Was the blood in the car his? Or more of hers that we found at the scene?
"Why come back here, though?"
"That's the reason why I called you here. Come with me." I follow her as she speaks, "We already searched the cabin. It's full of evidence that indicates Emmett and Rosalie came here regularly. There was no blood inside, but we did see this."
The backyard of the cabin is crawling with crime scene investigators, all gathered around what looks like a ditch, taking samples, pictures and numbering devices. She nods in their direction and I walk to take a look. I notice that at the head of the ditch there is a handmade cross with two wooden sticks. I stop, taking a breath. That can't be a good sign.
The moment I look at what's inside the ditch, my shoulders drop in defeat.
There lied the body of a woman in early stages of decomposition. Her skin has taken a grayish tone and it has swollen up, the area around her eyes are black and her cardigan and flowered dress were stained with the mud she was under. Even in the dark, it's not hard to see the bright yellow tone of her hair. From the looks of it, she was laid down gently, with her hands resting on her belly and a rose placed on her chest. Whoever did this cared about her.
I step back, trying to reign in the rush of emotions.
I had hope. I hoped that we were going to find her alive, probably hiding out trying to avoid the consequences of her affair, but at least she'd be alive. Her daughter would still have a mother.
Tanya steps beside me and shows me a picture of Rosalie Cullen. In the picture, I see a bright and happy woman with long curly blonde hair, blue eyes and a stricking bright red lip color that was only highlighted by the tone of her skin. Beautiful. It's not hard to see why a man like Emmett Swan would be attracted to her, but Isabella Swan is also a breathtakingly beautiful woman. Was this affair worth running away? Leaving his beautiful wife and children? Was it worth this end? Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, this could also not be Rosalie Cullen.
It's hard to take in the fact that the bright and beautiful woman in the picture could be the same woman whose corpse we just found buried in a ditch.
I hand the picture back to Tanya.
"Emmett never made it here," Tanya said, tucking the picture back into the folder. "You know what this means, right?"
"It means we're looking for a third person," I mutter. "Call Mr. Cullen and tell him we need him to identify the body."
"Detectives!" Ramirez yells out, running toward us. "You need to see this!"
Tanya and I follow him out a couple of yards into the woods. We stop beside a fallen tree trunk. The crime scene investigators step aside as Tanya and I push in. There, just under the tree trunk is what looks to be a 9mm gun.
"Holy shit." Tanya looks at me. "We might have just found the gun that shot Emmett Swan."
"Ramirez, after they're done, send that gun to the lab. This is a top priority!" I ordered.
"On it!"
Tanya leaves with Ramirez to send the gun to the lab. I pray we find something on it, anything. This case has gone from a simple car accident, to a missing persons case and now homicide. There are way too many pieces of the puzzle missing, but I was going to figure it out nonetheless.
Walking back to her final resting place, I kneel at her feet, taking her in.
What happened to you, Rosalie?
The next morning in the briefing room, my father, Captain Billy Black, called on Tanya and I to present our case to the rest of the precinct. We pull the projector out and dim the lights to start our presentation on the case.
"Okay, let's get you all up to speed. On the early morning of February 3rd, 911 dispatchers got a call regarding an accident on the 1-13 road leading to Forks, Washington." I show pictures of the accident. "A Jeep was run off the road and down a hill where policemen and paramedics found Emmett Swan outside of the vehicle-" I show his picture "-with a gunshot wound. According to his wife, Isabella Swan-" I show her picture "-her husband was heading to Miami for a book signing with one of his authors. However, records show two plane tickets purchased to London, and the other ticket was for Rosalie Cullen."
I show Rosalie's picture next.
Tanya steps in. "In the Jeep, we found a bag full of Mrs. Cullen's belongings, including her passport but she was nowhere to be found. The last time her husband saw her was shortly after a fight they had the night before."
"A burner phone and emails show that Mr. Swan and Mrs. Cullen had an affair dating back a couple of years and planned to run away together."
"Well, something must have gone wrong," Leah said.
"It did," Tanya said. We show pictures of the cabin. "We found in Mr. Swan's bank records that he purchased this cabin alongside a BMW under Mrs. Cullen's name. Scratch marks and dents on the hood of the BMW indicate it could have been involved in the accident. We also found blood in the vehicle that has been sent to the lab."
And now for the heavy part.
I show the pictures of the corpse we found. Everyone groans.
"Buried in the backyard of the cabin, we found a grave and there we found female remains in the early stage of decomposition and a few feet away, a 9mm gun."
Dad turns to us. "So what follows now?"
"We have called in Mr. Cullen to identify the body and it will be taken for an autopsy. The gun has been taken for DNA and we're looking to see who it is registered to."
"But the body and the gun were found at the cabin and Emmett Swan never made it to the cabin," Tanya said. "This means there was a third person involved. As of right now, Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan are of interest in this case."
Leah chuckles, leaning toward Xavier. "I bet the wife did it."
"No, I think it was the husband. At least he took the time to bury his wife," Xavier said.
"We don't know anything for sure," I snapped. "And until we check their alibis we are not pointing fingers at no one."
Dad nods to himself. "What about Emmett Swan? What's his condition looking like?"
"Coma. They have him on the ventilator."
"Very well, then. It looks like the two of you have a solid investigation going on. Keep me posted with any updates you have. You're all dismissed."
Everyone walks out of the briefing room, except for Tanya and me. I stand, but my eyes are glued to the picture of Isabella Swan on the monitor. There is no way she could have done something like this, could she?
"So now you believe in 'innocent until proven guilty'?" Tanya asked. "Or is it because Mrs. Swan has pretty eyes?"
"Fuck off." I grab my phone and shove it in my pocket. "I'll be back."
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to look for Isabella and update her on the case."
"What? Are you fucking kidding me? You can't do that."
"Why not?"
Tanya looks at me like I'm crazy. "Have you forgotten everything about being a detective? She is one of our prime suspects, anything we tell her is going to tip her off if she is the one responsible."
"Whoever did this must have the physical capacity to take down Emmett and carry Rosalie to her grave. Do you honestly believe Isabella Swan was able to take down her 250 pound husband, take his mistress to the cabin they frequented, kill her, bury her and get home in time for the police to call her and notify her about the accident? You saw her reaction when she found out about the affair-"
"She could be a very good actress and it still doesn't mean she doesn't have some kind of involvement. I'm telling you, Jacob, don't feed her any more information until we know for certain-"
Her phone rings.
She sighs heavily and answers her phone.
"Denali."
She stays quiet but the look on her face says everything. Her shoulders drop and she closes her eyes, letting out a defeated sigh.
"Okay, what about the blood in the car?" She asks. She waits a couple seconds and nods to herself. "Okay, thank you. Anything on the gun we found?" This time she rolls her eyes and groans. "Alright, Ramirez, keep us posted. Thank you." She hangs up and looks at me. "Mr. Cullen has identified the body as Rosalie Cullen. The blood in the car does belong to her."
"And considering we found more blood at the scene-"
"It means she was killed at the crash site," Tanya finishes for me. "Her body is being taken for an autopsy. There were no fingerprints or any DNA evidence found on the gun or car."
Dammit. Two steps forward and one step back. At least now we know Rosalie wasn't killed at the cabin, but at the scene of the crash. Now we need to find anything that might point to a third person, anyone. If only that bastard Emmett was conscious.
I grab my jacket. "I'm going to tell Isabella."
"I can't stop you," Tanya says, crossing her arms over her chest. "But I'm telling you this is a bad idea."
Bad idea or not, Isabella deserved to know the truth. It's hard for me to understand why a man like Emmett, who had this beautiful wife and two children at home, would throw it all away for someone else. Yes, Rosalie Cullen was a very beautiful woman, but there is just something about Isabella that screams pure. Good and pure. Something inside me tells me she is not the person we're looking for.
But Mr. Cullen...
Edward Cullen... something about him doesn't sit right with me. From the very first moment I saw him with her, there was a look on his face and something was off about it. He did not react to the news about the affair either, which prompts the question, did he know? Did he know about Isabella before we introduced him to her?

Oh, oh! Jacob already has his suspicions! 👀 do you have any suspicions?
