Hizashi Yamada's POV:
I practically skipped up to the front gates. Turning the corner and catching sight of the tall building in front of me, I grinned at the large letters looming overhead.
U.A.
"U.A. here I come!" I cheered, then froze as I noticed all the kids around me covering there ears and giving me stern looks.
My quirk probably activated again. Oops.
With an awkward smile and a quick apology, I hurried through the gates and towards the front steps. Following the directions off of the pamphlet that came with my acceptance letter, it wasn't long before I reached the surprisingly tall doors of class 1-A. Even more surprisingly, I seemed to be one of the first ones in class when I entered.
Glancing at the clock on the wall, I realized there were still around 20 minutes left.
Hm. Guess I got overly excited.
I shrugged it off and marched excitedly over to the desk in the front corner with my name on it, setting down my bag. I sat in the chair and glanced around at the few students that were already here.
There was a girl with bright red hair and horns coming from the sides of her head, teasing a tall boy who seemed to have a sort of cheetah related mutant quirk, considering his ears, tail, and faint spots on his skin. A short girl with incredibly long black hair also stood by them, nodding along and laughing at the two.
I also noticed a boy sitting in the back corner. I could see his face better since he was behind me. He had fluffy green hair, freckles, and large, round green eyes.
He watched the other kids studiously, and, seemingly lost in his own thoughts, raised his hand and slightly knocked it to the side as it glowed blue. Curiously, I watched as his bag leaning against the side of his desk on the floor, glowed the same blue as his hand and opened on its own. As he moved his hand upwards, a notebook and pen slipped out of the bag and landed on his desk, the bag closing itself again afterwards. Then he picked up the pen, flipped open the notebook, and started scribbling something down while mumbling to himself, quickly and inaudibly.
Hm.
"Hey." My head snapped up as I noticed one of the kids, the boy who looked like a cheetah, had walked over to me and was smiling at me.
"Oh, hi!" I said, louder then I meant to. I caught him flinch slightly. "Ah, sorry, my quirk makes my voice loud and sometimes it activates without me realizing."
He smiled. "That's alright. I'm Hikano Shirama," he raised his hand towards me.
Excited, I jumped up from my seat and shook it a bit too hard. "Hizashi Yamada, nice to meet you!"
He laughed, but seemed a bit uncomfortable.
"Right well, I'm going to sit back down. I'm just trying to learn everyone's names before class starts."
"Got it," I shot finger guns at him. "Scoping out the competition, ey?"
"Well, sorta. I'm also just hoping to make some friends this year," he smiled.
"Ah, right. That's dope too!"
He laughed and then turned to head back over to his seat.
My shoulders slumped slightly. I felt like I'd messed that up somehow.
My eyes caught sight of the boy in the corner again, noticing that his attention was now on me.
I smiled at him, but when he realized I had noticed him, he turned a bright red and looked back down at his notebook.
Well, might as well give this friendship thing a second try.
I walked up behind him and peered over his shoulder at his notebook. "Whatcha writing?"
Startled, he let out a yelp and jumped, almost knocking his desk over. He grabbed his pencil before it could topple off, and reached for his notebook, but I reached it first, turning back to the page he'd been on.
"H-hey! G-gimme that b-back..." the boy stuttered, standing up.
I glanced up just enough to see his nervous face as he hesitated to try and pull it out of my hand. I turned away anyways and kept reading.
After a second my eyes widened and I turned back around, still reading. "Is this... is this on me? On my quirk?" I asked, looking up.
The boys face somehow turned redder then it already was and he frantically grabbed the notebook away, closing it and seeming to panic slightly.
"N-no! I-I mean, yes," he admitted shamefully. "I-I'm sorry, I don't mean to b-be creepy! I-I just noticed y-your voice b-being loud and I-I thought-."
"I've never met you before, right?" I asked, still surprised.
"U-um, n-no."
"Then how'd you figure all that out if we've never even met?"
"I-I just put some pieces together when I overheard you talking to that boy. I-I'm sorry-."
"No, don't apologize," I insisted, a grin spreading across my face. "That's super cool! The fact that you put all that together by listening to one conversation of mine, that's- that's incredible!"
Once again, his face flushed a deep red. But he smiled. "R-really? Y-you think so?"
"Yeah! That's super awesome dude!" I lowered a hand out to the guy. "Hizashi Yamada, though I guess you already knew that from my conservation earlier."
The boy hesitated, but then shook my hand. "I-Izuku Midoriya."
I grinned. "Can I read more of that?"
"Oh, um, sure," Midoriya handed the book back to me and I kept reading.
After a minute, I noticed one or two errors and some missing information. "My quirk actually effects the sound waves I release, not my actual vocal chords. They start out normal volume and get louder as they exit my mouth."
His eyes lit up. "Ah, that makes sense. That's what makes them able to reach so far out, too. I was across the room but they still seemed just as loud. Can I?"
I handed him back the notebook and he grabbed his pencil off his desk and scribbled some things down. For the next few minutes we talked about my quirk, until he'd pretty much filled out the two entire pages with theories and questions, facts, ideas, support gear, and way more stuff I'd never even considered.
"Wow. Your amazing!" I said, reading over it.
He flushed again. "Th-Thanks, but it's just a hobby."
"How long've you been doing this for?"
"Since I learned to write, so probably four or five."
I gaped. "No way!"
He chuckled. "Yes way. You should see my first analysis. It was in crayon and just amounted to 'so cool!'"
"You've got to show me it some time!" I slammed my hand on the desk excitedly.
"No way! That's embarrassing," he laughed.
"Ah please, I'll bet you've got way more embarrassing secrets up your alley then that."
I meant it as a joke, but for some reason, his face darkened at that and he looked down.
"Hey, it was just a joke," a said, suddenly nervous. Should I not have said that?
He looked back up with a smile and laughed it off, though he still seemed a bit weary. "No, it's fine. Sorry, that just reminded me of something," he said, slowly.
Not sure what else to say, I looked around again.
Noticing that there were now only a few more minutes before class started, and that there were way more kids talking and chattering then there were before, I promised to see him again after school and headed back over to my desk.
Now there were way more students with other quirks, like a girl made of a clear gel, a boy with multiple eyes, and a bored looking girl, playing with a metal pen like it was a piece of slime.
I glanced back at Midoriya, who was now scanning the classroom with awed eyes. Biting back a chuckle. I could only imagine what a playground he could make out of all these quirks in his notebook.
Hearing a voice over top all the others, I caught sight of a blue-haired boy playing with what I could only describe as a sphere shaped cloud. Oh how I wanted to touch that ball.
Everyone quieted a bit as the door opened and a tall man walked in with thin white hair, glasses, a friendly smile and a simple dark blue costume, with white accents and a white cape.
Many of the students were too distracted by the hero they apparently recognized to notice, but I wasn't, so I caught sight of the boy who snuck in behind the hero. He had his head down and moved fast, seeming to be trying to hide from anyone's attention as he snuck over to the empty desk behind me.
"Hey!" I said after he'd sat down, making him jump and look up at me surprised. Man, why was everyone so jumpy and nervous today?
"O-oh, um, hello..."
I turned back around with a frown as the teacher called everyone to attention.
He introduced himself after everyone had quieted down as the pro hero Target, or Misaki sensei, who could shoot different items from different parts of his arms and legs, like bullets from his finger tips and arrows from his forearm.
Then he started asking the students one by one to stand up and introduce themselves. I payed attention to there names and quirks, but I knew for certain I wouldn't remember any of em by the end of class. Darn my terrible memory.
But I bet Midoriya was keeping track in his notebook or something.
When it came around to my turn, I stood up. "Hizashi Yamada, reporting for duty!" I said, energetically. "My quirk is Voice. I can talk really loudly!"
Misaki sensei chuckled. "Yes, I can see that. Thank you, Yamada."
I sat back down and heard the boy sitting behind me groan. Right up until he realized it was his turn.
He very nervously stood up and kept his eyes down as he spoke quiet and shakily. I felt kinda bad, he looked somewhat terrified.
"Shota Aizawa... my quirk is eraser, I can cancel out people's quirks temporarily as long as I keep my eyes on them." Then he immediately sat back down.
Meanwhile, I was impressed, thinking about how cool his quirk was. I caught sight of Midoriya's grin in the back. He was definitely having a field day back there, with how excited he seemed to be about quirks, especially unique ones.
A few minutes later it was his turn. He looked nervous, but he didn't look near as bad as the Aizawa kid had, other then his stutter. But that seems to be bad no matter what.
"I-Izuku Midoriya. M-my quirk is telekinesis, I-I can move items by m-manipulating certain forces around them with- with my hands."
Oh. I'd completely forgotten to ask about his quirk earlier, huh?
Welp, guess I didn't need to anymore.
"Alright, it's very nice to meet you all," Misaki sensei smiled warmly. "Now, shall we move on with orientation?"
Izuku Midoriya's POV:
... If a mutant quirk also had a second affect like an emitter, would he be able to cancel that part out or would he not be able to cancel any of it because the quirk is a mutant type? Also, if he can't blink, then to last longer without blinking, you just have to keep his eyes wet, right? What if he wore goggles that somehow humidified around his eyes to keep them wet? That should let him keep his eyes open longer, and-
"Oi, Midoriya!"
I almost jumped out of my seat as I heard Yamada's incredibly loud voice right next to me. Man, that was going to take some getting used to.
"Y-Yamada!" I said, shutting my notebook and glancing around. How long ago did the bell ring? Everyone had already gone to lunch I guess.
"You were muttering again. I called your name like three times!" Yamada teased, but he was grinning under his sunglasses. I wonder why he wore those inside, anyways.
"O-oh, was I? Sorry, guess I got caught in my own thoughts again," I chuckled nervously.
"Nah, I don't mind," he waved me off, then chuckled and turned to face a desk near his own. "But I think you might've scared our little friend here."
I leaned over to peer around him at the desk, and realized we weren't the only ones left in the room.
Hurriedly trying to stuff his things in his bag, but failing miserably as they all toppled back out, was the Aizawa kid.
The exact one I'd been muttering about.
And he'd definitely heard me.
Shoot.
"I-I'm so sorry!" I tried to apologize, jumping up and also starting to shove my notebook in my bag. "I-I promise I wasn't spying on you or anything! You probably think I'm pretty cr-creepy. I'm sorry, I-I just thought your quirk was really cool and stuff, and I was just thinking about..." I trailed off as I realized the boy had frozen, half his stuff sprawled across the floor.
Meanwhile Yamada was struggling to hold back his laughter.
Slowly, Aizawa turned to look at me, his eyes wide with surprise. "You- you think my quirk is cool...?"
"U-um, y-yeah, I-it's super unique and would really c-come in handy for fighting v-villains."
"You... you don't think it's creepy or anything?"
I chuckled, grabbing my bag and walking over to him. "Way less creepy then my muttering about your quirk."
I bent down and helped gather up his stuff, both of us quiet. Then we both stood up and I handed him his stuff.
He slowly put it back in his bag, then we both just stood there for a moment.
I was about to leave when he spoke again. "I don't think it's creepy, I'm sorry if you thought I did. It's just, I was surprised you were thinking about my quirk and I just... I don't know, sorry."
I grinned. Two people in one day who didn't think my muttering and analyzing was creepy!
"Thank you. I'm sorry I freaked you out though."
"It's alright," he mumbled.
"I'm Izuku Midoriya," I lowered my hand out to him.
He hesitated, then took it. "Shota Aizawa."
I smiled. "Nice to meet you, Aizawa."
Then, with an idea, I glanced back at Yamada. He seemed to share my thought, because he grinned and gave me a thumbs up.
"Would- would you like to come have lunch with me and Yamada? I would also like to learn a bit more about your quirk- I-if that's ok with you of course," I chuckled nervously, fidgeting with my bag strap.
Yamada had insisted we have lunch together. No one had invited me to have lunch in a very long time, much less me asking them. So I was getting pretty nervous.
I couldn't meet his eyes as he stayed quiet for a few minutes. I was starting to worry I had upset him somehow when he talked.
"Um, if you guys don't mind, I guess."
I flashed a grin at him, then Yamada put his arms over each of our shoulders and pulled us into a hug. We both flinched as he spoke loudly in our ears.
"Yes! First day of school and already two friends!"
I froze at the statement.
Friends?
We'd hardly talked and he was already calling us friends?
I glanced at Aizawa, and he seemed frozen with the same thought. But then he met my eyes.
I gave him a weary smile.
He looked away, and just groaned as he pulled out of the hug. "Whatever," he muttered.
Ah. Emo, huh?
I couldn't help but chuckle at the thought.
Yamada just grinned all the wider, and continued to speak loudly. "Let's go team!"
Aizawa groaned once more, then we all headed up to the cafeteria.
Shota Aizawa's POV:
Man. UA sure is... different.
I got complemented by a teacher, someone thought my quirk was cool, and they even invited me to eat lunch with them. They were so... ice to me.
Very different.
I hate different.
Midoriya wont stop muttering about the most random things, and Yamada is like a car horn every time he opens his mouth.
And then...
Ugh.
And then there's him.
"Shota Aizawa, huh?"
I looked up from my desk to see a boy with light blue hair and dark blue eyes, a bandage across his nose, smiling down at my desk. I followed his gaze to my notebook with my name on it. Then he turned to me and held a hand out. "Oboro Shirakumo, nice to meet ya!"
I sighed.
Not another one.
By the time the first day of class was over, I somehow got looped into the little group and we all ended up walking home together, because, apparently, we all lived pretty near each other.
"So, do you gather water vapor and just pull enough of it together to create a cloud? Or do you create enough on your own to basically create a cloud instantly?" Midoriya asked Shirakumo as they walked in the front. Me and Yamada walked behind them as he tossed around a ball of cloud that Shirakumo had made him.
"Aizawa! You've gotta feel this!" Yamada said, pushing the ball toward me. "It feels like cotton!"
Reluctantly, I reached out and squished the ball. My eyes went wide.
He was right. It felt like cotton candy, like how you'd expect a cloud to feel when you looked up and saw them in the sky. Nothing like the hollow, humidity that science said it should feel like. I'd never felt anything like it.
"Woah," I breathed.
"I know, right!?" I flinched at Yamada's loud yell, and found myself, for the thousandth time that day, wondering why I'm still hanging out with the living microphone.
Then, reluctantly, I let myself realize why.
Because it felt nice.
No matter how loud and annoying each of them were, they liked me. They hung out with me, they thought my quirk was cool.
They... they called me their friend.
I'd never had a friend before, much less there. And on the first day, too.
How exactly that happened, I couldn't say.
But, although I'd never admit it, I loved it.
I looked down to hide my small smile.
Yamada would never leave me alone otherwise.
"You know what guys?" Shirakumo said, stopping in his tracks and turning to face everyone. "I don't know about you, but I have a great feeling we're all gonna be best friends! What do you say? Best friends?" He lowered his hand out into the center of our little circle.
Yamada immediately did the same, placing his hand on top or Shirakumo's. Midoriya glanced at me, then smiled a bit nervously, and did the same. Then everyone looked at me.
I sighed, and hesitantly put my hand in the middle too.
"Best friends!" Yamada and Shirakumo both raised there hands in the air and yelled.
Then p, after realizing me and Midoriya hadn't done the same, Shirakumo frowned at us. Midoriya looked confused, and I was back to being tired of this and just embarrassed at this point. There were people around.
"No, no, you guys are supposed to do it too. One more time," Shirakumo said, putting his hand back in the middle. This died a laugh from Yamada, a tired sigh from me, and a flush from Midoriya.
"Sorry," the greenette said, putting his hand back, then me and Yamada did the same.
"3, 2, 1..." Shirakumo counted aloud.
"Best friends!"
This time, all four hands raised and all four voices chimed, mine just a bit more monotoned and quiet then the others.
But what I didn't realize at the time, was that that promise would stick, and would, sooner rather then later, mean the world to me.
But for how long would that friendship last?
