Hitoshi stood awkwardly on the train platform, he knew that UA had gendered uniforms he shouldn't have been surprised when his foster parents had given him the skirt but still.
He lived about an hour away from the school and had to fight his foster parents to let him go.
According to them women couldn't be heroes, despite all the women who were heroes, but Hitoshi had learned not to argue with them so he just told them he was aiming for general studies and prayed that they'd believe him.
They did and Hitoshi got into the general studies course, he was of course trying for the hero course but unfortunately his quirk was not made for fighting giant robots.
Hitoshi spent the train ride to UA staring out the window and trying to come up with ways to get the male uniform.
He couldn't think of anything.
--
Luckily thanks to his eagerness to leave his foster parents apartment he was about ten minutes early.
There wasn't a lot of people around and the ones that were there weren't paying Hitoshi any mind,
And that's when he saw them.
Leaning against the wall and nervously texting on their phone was a person with short black hair. At first Hitoshi thought they were wearing earbuds but then realized that the long things he thought were Wires were actually part of their ears, they were wearing the boys uniform and they looked uncomfortable.
Hitoshi got an idea, crossed his fingers and walked up to them.
"Come on text back." they said angrily at their phone.
"Hey," Hitoshi said, the person looked up "you look uncomfortable." he said
"Yeah," they looked down and crossed their arms, "my parents got the wrong uniform."
"So did mine." Hitoshi said, the person looked up "Do you want to trade?" Hitoshi asked, since the person didn't know his quirk, he was safe to ask questions.
The person smiled "yes, thanks."
Hitoshi shugged, "Don't thank me,"
He dragged the person into the girls bathroom.
They changed in side by side stalls, passing their uniforms under the space between the stalls.
Once done Hitoshi and the person stood side by side looking in the mirror.
The legs of the pants were slightly too long but Hitoshi could cuff them.
The person beside him smiled.
"Seriously man, thanks I don't know what I'd do if I had to spend all day in that."
Hitoshi shugged "me either, but do you mind if we switch back before we go home, my parents don't know."
"Alright, hey if we're going to be swapping uniforms, my name is Kyouka Jirou, my pronouns are she, her." Jirou held out her hand "you?"
"What name do you want?" Hitoshi said
"You're name, you're real one."
Hitoshi blinked
"The name you chose, your real name." Jirou said
Hitoshi smiled and took her hand.
"Hitoshi Shinsou, he, him."
His real name.
--
Jirou watched as Hitoshi tried to figure out how to style his hair to seem more masc.
Hitoshi frowned at his reflection.
"You know if you styled it up that might work?" Jirou said "I have hair gel in my bag."
Hitoshi looked over at her "why do you have hair gel in your bag?"
She shrugged "in case I need it, we still have about six minutes until class i can do it."
Hitoshi nodded "okay."
He did look more masc.
"It's a little awkward because of how long your hair is but it looks good." Jirou said
Hitoshi touched his hair.
It wasn't even the nasty gel that made his hair feel crunchy.
"It looks great, thanks."
"No problem man." Jirou said "we should probably go to head to class though."
The two left the bathroom.
"What course are you in anyway?" Jirou asked
"General studies, you?" Hitoshi said silently, hoping they were in the same class.
"Hero course." she said
Hitoshi nodded, "I was trying for that."
"I heard you can transfer if you do well in the sports festival." Jirou said
"Well let's hope." Hitoshi said
"Yeah, I think we have lunch together though, if you want to keep hanging out?" Jirou said
"Yeah that'd be cool," Hitoshi said with a small smile dancing on his lips.
"Dope, see ya then." Jirou said headed toward her class room.
Hitoshi headed toward his own.
--
His classmates were pretty mundane in all honesty, he avoided them as usual and sat at a random desk in the front.
His classmates chatting soon became white noise as his brain started its usual tyrade.
What if his homeroom teacher calls him by his dead name?
What if they force him into a girl's uniform?
What if they misgender him all year?
Hitoshi was honestly glad when his homeroom teacher showed up.
They're sudden arrival stopped him from spiraling into a panic attack.
Although the sound of a whip cracking and some Audible glups from some of his classmates made him realize who his teacher was before he even looked up.
Hitoshi then felt extremely embarrassed by the fact that he knew who she was.
Pro hero midnight stood tall and proud at the front of the class.
"Hello everybody, welcome to UA, I'll be your homeroom teacher, you may call me Ms midnight." the woman smiled.
She pulled out a piece of paper from a lavender folder she was holding
"Let's see here, do we have everyone?" she said mostly to herself.
Midnight looked up at the students and then down at the paper a couple times pausing when she looked at Hitoshi.
He started to Fidget and nervously looked away from the heroine.
She made a "hmm?" Noise and pulled a pen from her utility belt, she clicked it and then looked at the class.
"Why don't you all introduce yourselves and tell us one thing about you." she said "well start on the right and go to the left."
She pointed at the girl on the far right "go."
Hitoshi felt kinda bad that he couldn't remember any of his classmates names, he was more focused on the facts they shared.
Some of them shared their quirks and some of them shared their favorite animals or colors.
He was trying to decide what his fun fact was when it was suddenly his turn to introduce himself.
"Uh," he faltered
Should he say his birth name or?
Then what Jirou said came back to him
"The name you chose, your real name."
"My name is Hitoshi Shinsou and i really like cats." he said quickly
Midnight smiled "you know you remind me of a friend of mine." she laughed "I'll have to ask if he ever had a kid."
Hitoshi doubted that but he gave her a small laugh and then zoned out for the rest of the introductions.
--
Hitoshi was glad that Jirou was right and that they had lunch together.
Although he had neglected to pack lunch.
His foster father was in the kitchen that morning and the man made him intensely uncomfortable so he decided to just skip breakfast and lunch that day.
Jirou seemed to believe him when he said he wasn't hungry.
"Honestly he seems pretty cool you know, like he seems like a fair teacher." Jirou said.
When she said that her homeroom teacher was THE Eraserhead, Hitoshi almost started fanboying, almost.
He immediately asked what he was like and Jirou started talking about the exercises he had put them through almost immediately.
"And you see that green haired kid over there," Jirou said quietly "he was really harsh with him but he did break his arm and I think both legs during the entrance exam."
"Oh shit." Hitoshi said, looking at where Jirou was pointing.
A couple of students were asking him questions and he was blushing and waving them off.
"We thought he was going to get expelled but apparently Eraserhead was lying when he said that." Jirou put on a deep voice "it was a logical ruse so I was sure you were doing your best, or whatever."
Hitoshi laughed, "You know, back when I was living with one of my past foster family's i saw him."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah I saw him feeding cats in the alley by the apartment."
Jirou grinned mischievously "so he likes cats, good to know, good to know."
--
The two walked out of the cafeteria together enjoying the comfortable silence between them before it was rudely broken.
A short boy with purple hair that looked like grapes ran in front of Hitoshi.
"Hey this morning I saw you and her leave the bathroom together, what were you doing?" He wiggled his eyebrows at Hitoshi.
"Piss off Mineta." Jirou said glaring down at him.
Mineta ignored her "come on man you can tell me, did you have sex? What was it like?"
Hitoshi felt extremely uncomfortable in the presence of this guy, and then he felt anger.
He had been in homes with people like this, not one of them pleasant.
But this isn't a foster home, his brain said being helpful for once, the rules don't apply here.
"What's it like being the most annoying creature to ever walk the earth?" Hitoshi asked
"You don't have to be rude i was just asking a-" minetas body went slack as Hitoshi activated his quirk
"Go shove your head in the toilet." Hitoshi ordered and the small boy spun on his heel and started heading to the closest bathroom.
"Yo what was that?" A boy with straight black hair asked
Oh people witnessed that.
"Yeah Shinsou?" Jirou asked
"Oh my quirk is that i can mind control people if they respond to a question i ask." Hitoshi said nervously, welp bye friendship it was nice while it lasted.
"Cool!" Jirou and the black haired boy said
Hitoshi blinked in surprise
Cool?
"Wait, does that mean he's going to dunk his toilet, like for real?" The boy asked
Hitoshi nodded, still shocked that they were still talking to him.
The boy grinned and started running to catch up with mineta, Jirou smiled and called after him "send me a video!"
They turned slightly and kept running "Dude I'm sending the whole class a video!"
Jirou turned back to Hitoshi, "that's Sero, he's cool."
"Yeah," Hitoshi said, she was still talking to him.
She wasn't scared of him.
--
Jirou and Hitoshi switched uniforms again at the end of the day and promised to do it again the next day.
Hitoshi washed the gel out of his hair in the bathroom sink,
Then Hitoshi walked to the train station and went home.
--
He found himself on the roof that night.
It was peaceful up there, sitting on the edge of the roof, the inky black sky above him.
The cold night air was a pleasant feeling compared to the heated air in the apartment.
It was always too hot there.
Hitoshi closed his eyes and leaned back slightly, before opening them and looking up at the stars.
When he was at the good home, one of his foster brothers showed him how to look for Constellations. He could only ever find the big dipper but looking up at the stars and drawing lines between them was something comfy now.
He had made his own when he was younger, all of them cat themed, he had thought that the Leo Constellation was lonely and needed a pride, so he made one.
The wind blew his purple hair around gently.
He stayed out there until his fingers and toes had gone slightly numb from the cold.
He went back to the apartment and to his room.
He kept the window open.
He needed the cold.
