My name is Delia . I don't know what is my family name because when I born， I only see my grandma but my parent are all missing. My grandma told me that they were all dead but I don't think that is the truth. However I have no evidence to prove that.
I born in the city called Detroit. It is a city after a Hundred Years' War . The purpose is to protect the survivors and their children . Our ancestors established five factions system to ensure peace :abnegation， erudite ， dauntless ， Candor and amity.
Every factions have their own purpose for the city: abnegation provides us with selfless government leaders， erudite provides with advanced technologies and teachers， dauntless provides us with protection from within and without ， Candor provides us with soundly leaders in law and amity provides us with counsellors and care takers. Without any of them， we have no purpose to live
When we turn 12，we have to choose a faction. We can either choose to stay in our original faction or leave them. However leaving our family means that we forsake them permanently .
When we choose ， it will make us initiates but not members yet. When we finished our initiation， then we can become members. If we failed ， then that means we become factionless
I was born in dauntless and chose dauntless as my faction. Dauntless of course is cruelest of the five because we encouraged killing each other and also kicked those losers out of dauntless .
Today is my final rank announcement. I was ranked first in my first stage and my second and third shouldn't be too bad at all because I have special brain power : divergence .
"So before the party， we will announce the rank. Those of you who get cut have to leave before tomorrow ." Alexander announces， he is the mafia boss of dauntless
My best friend Joshua Pushkin is his son and we are in the same initiate class this year . Everyone stand silent and we are all extremely nervous .
"So the rank decides the order you will choose the job. We have an ambassador position opened for you guys and two leadership." Alexander smiles at us .
He clicks the button on the screen . Speech is for erudite so we make very short speech here . My name is still at the first row and I am ranking first .
"Congratulation." Joshua wraps his arm around me ."You are guarantee for that ambassador position or leadership."
"Thank you. I think that you should get the leadership because your father will give his position to you when he is gone ." I shrug.
"I don't think that I can get. I may not be as good as him."Joshua sighs
I pat him on his back. I know that his father is very strict very him
"That makes you unique Joshua . You don't need to do exactly as he did ." I smile at him
"Really? You think that I can also be a good leader Delia?" Joshua's eyes light up."You look more abnegation or amity than dauntless ."
"Sometime bravery and selflessness aren't that different." I giggle
Linda and Maria are my only good friends beside joshua . Everyone respected me but that is only because my grandma is one of leader.
"Congratulation， all of us are staying ." Linda hugs me ."You look at Elizabeth. She is leaving. She is factionless now ."
"That is all because Joshua likes her ." Elizabeth points at me ."That isn't fair ."
"My son will not randomly crushed on anyone . That is also one of his ability and strength." Alexander smirks ."One more word， I will fire you."
Alexander is pretty scary . However he loves his wife very much. His wife was the previous ambassador but she dead because of giving birth to their second children and their second child didn't make it as well
"So now you guys can line up according to your rank and picking up your job." Alexander makes a whistle ."First Delia ."
I walk to the stage . He looks at me kindly.
"I want to be instructor and ambassador ." I say confidently.
"Okay you can learn from your grandma first and then you will instruct the dauntless transfers this year ." Alexander nods at me
"Yes sir ." I bowl my head and leave
I stand in front of the table and watch them choose . Joshua chooses the leadership and he will watch the training with me . His position is higher than me because ambassador is half way in and half way out of the leadership.
"So now we are partners." I laugh.
"Yeah ， having some chocolate cake now ?" Joshua sits down."I love it."
"Yeah I want just a bit because too sweet for me ." I shrug
He gives me a small piece and I bite it . Linda and Maria sit down beside me .
"Oh your mouth is full of chocolate ." Linda wipes the chocolate for me from the corner of my mouth."You are so cute ."
"That is embarrassing." I am blushing now ."Finally get to have my own room."
Someone puts his hand on my shoulder and I turn around . I see my instructor mark Alvaro .
"Congratulation ， I know that you can make it." Mark sits down beside me ."Can I talk to you after ?"
"Sure mark ， I will talk to you whenever you want." I rest my head on his shoulder
Joshua looks at us surprisingly. He confessed to me once but I refused . I wasn't even this close with him.
"You and mark are good friends now." Maria frowns
"We always have become good friends Maria ." I shake my head
Maria and Linda both transferred from Candor to dauntless so they don't know about me and mark. We are only friends even thought we act like we are more than that.
After the party， I walk with mark alone the chasm
"So I know that you are divergent Delia ." Mark looks seriously at me
"Why you are telling me that?" I am shocked
"It is because That I am feeling something is going to happen to you and me ." He puts his hand on my shoulder ."However before they can get you， then they will get me ."
He leans into me but when he reaches my mouth， he move his lips and kisses my forehead
"I always want you to be safe Delia . I always want to protect you but from now on ， you will have to protect yourself ." He grabs my shoulder."Promise me that you will never tell anyone what was your result ."
"Why? Why divergents that dangerous ." I scream
"You have to be quiet. We are someone that they can never be controlled . I feel that here is a big secret hidden behind this city." Mark sighs
After he finishes saying, he leaves . I am staring at the chasm into the darkness .
"Delia , are you okay?" My grandma approaches me
"Grandma , why is mark telling me that something is going to get both of us ." I cry
"Delia , divergent is very dangerous . However for the real reasons behind it, we don't know it." Grandma shakes her head
She hugs me . I cry into her arm. She brings me to my room next . It is quiet big because I am having a government job.
"You have a big responsibility here Delia ." Grandma sits beside me . "You have to be extra careful.
"Thanks grandma , I will." I nod at her
"I will have to go for a meeting now ." Grandma kisses my cheek. "Good night Delia ."
Grandma wishes me good night and leaves my room. I open the light. It has double floor . My bedroom is upstair including a small fitness room.
Then I open the fridge . There are foods and drinks . Maybe my grandma prepared for me because sometime I don't want to eat with everyone . I love to be alone more than accompanied by friends
Then I hear a loud screaming sound and I sneak out the room. It is from the chasm . No it can't be it again. Every year there will be people jumping off the chasm .
"Who is it !" I run toward the chasm
"It is mark !" Joshua runs toward me
Mark! My instructor ! He is dead? I remembered that he told me that if someone is coming to get me , then they will have to get to him first. He was protecting me but now he is gone
"No !" I kneel on the floor .
I am crying and frustrated . Joshua holds me into his arms
"Don't cry Delia . Be brave ." Joshua kisses my forehead . "He doesn't want to see you cry ."
"You don't understand Joshua . You will never understand ." I push him away
He sits on the floor . Alexander walks toward us with other bunch of dauntless
"Delia , you have to get up." Alexander says coldly
I stand up and wipe my tears away. I can't cry in front of him.
"I know that mark death will affect you for a while but Delia , you have to do your job ." Alexander sighs . "The situation is more complicated than you think."
"So how is it more complicated Alexander . He wasn't suicidal ." I scream at him
"I will find out who did that and exiled him or her ." Alexander shrugs
I know that maybe Alexander allowed it or he asked them to do it.
"I want that person to die . He hurts my heart and killed my instructor . I want him to die ." I clinch my teeth.
"I will think about that." Alexander looks at me into my eyes . "Tomorrow you have to come with me to erudite and afternoon that you will run the aptitude test."
He leaves and I don't say a word . A soldier hands me something .
"This is what mark left you." The soldier says . "I am sorry about that."
I take the letter and i crumple it into my fist . I don't want to read it in public because I am worried that is something so private .
"Why aren't you reading it?" Linda sits down beside me
"I don't have the mood right now to say goodbye ." I shake my head
