CHAPTER 2

HERMIONE'S POV

I wake up to a loud rapping sound. "Okay, I'll get up," I say drowsily. I wander over to the place where the noise is coming from. It's Hedwig. I open the window and she swoops inside, resting on the desk, yet for some reason she has not relaxed her wings, and she doesn't have a letter either, which worries me. I haven't gotten any from him all summer and I really miss them too. They tell me that Harry's okay and to stop worrying about him. I am jerked out of my reverie by an indignant hoot from Hedwig. After a few seconds she hops off the desk, preparing to fly away. It hits me just before she flies out of the window. "Is Harry in danger?" She changes course and stops under my feet. Weirdly, she still does not close her wings. Then that hits me too. She wants me to get on her back. I sit down and she rises, just at the right height for me to do it. I try and – I'm on.

We ride to Harry's house, and by the time we get there, the morning chill has turned into dusk. I check my watch. 9:00. Hopefully the rotten Dursleys are asleep. I listen intently. Nothing. Hedwig dropped me off around the back, so I slip through the door. Hedwig scratches the cupboard door with one talon. I wrench it open, turn the light on and quickly close it again. I look around. Blood is spattered on the walls, undoubtedly Harry's. Then I look down, and barely manage to stifle a scream. It's Harry, crumpled up on the ground, in a pool of his own blood.

I just stand there for a moment, looking at him. A little rustle jerks me out of my temporary paralysis. Hedwig has just squeezed in through a hole in the foundation. Just then, I know what to do. I muster up all the strength and courage I possess, and lift him up onto Hedwig's back. I am shocked by how light he is. "Hedwig, to St. Mungo's, quick i demand, turning the light off and hopping onto her back. I push the door open one last time. And we are off, With me holding Harry, into the night.
