Whilst Rocket and Nebula prepped their spaceship called the Benatar, the rest of the team suited up in preparation for possibly the most important fight of their lives. Whilst that was happening Steve attempted to get used to his newly borrowed Iron Man suit. He felt bad taking from Tony but realised that he would need the suit's superhuman strength and durability to substitute his absent serum. Many of the nanites that formed the suit were destroyed in Tony's battle against Thanos. Even with Steve's reduced body mass the Armor was unable to cover his fingertips and the bottom half of his face. The suit had completely lost its full body red and gold lustre, instead looking more silver or even faintly blue in the light of the arc reactors. The only presence of red nanites were around the forearms and legs of the suit. Steve could comfortably fight hand to hand in it but despite Rhodey's tutoring, he was only able to make 2 basic shields from the limited nanites he had.

Soon it was finally time to go and confront Thanos. They sat down in the Benatar and Steve's heart felt like it was going to leap out of his mouth in anticipation. He looked towards the pilot, Rocket Racoon for comfort or advice. Rocket looked back at Steve and asked "Okay, who here hasn't been to space?"

Natasha, Steve and Rhodey slowly lifted their hands like 3 shy kids in class.

"Why?" Rhodey asked out of curiosity

"You better not throw up on my ship." Rocket muttered under his breath

"Approaching jump in 3... 2... 1!" cried Nebula before the ship jumped forward into a wormhole, and Steve held onto his seat for dear life. His eyes widened at the exhilaration of this new experience… as well as the rediscovery of his old motion sickness. The nanites quickly repositioned themselves in front of his mouth and nose to avoid upsetting Rocket. Steve swallowed and felt ringing in his ears as the ship slowed down and hovered in orbit of the planet they all saw in the hologram Rocket showed them. Rhodey and Thor exited the ship to scan and recon the planet.

There was a nervous tension in the Benatar as its passengers prepared for the impending confrontation to avenge the billions they've lost. As they awaited Steve took out his compass and opened it. Inside was a picture of the woman he lost and loved, Peggy Carter. Natasha noticed Steve's forlorn expression as he switched off the suits HUD and gave him a small comforting smile.

"Hey, do you think you'll keep the suit?"

"I don't think I'm in Tony's good books right now and… well the world has gone 2 years without Captain America. If this works, they can probably go on without him."

"This is gonna work, Steve."

"I know it will." Steve closed the compass and switched on the suits HUD ready in attack mode "Cause I don't know what I'm going to do if it doesn't."

Rhodey contacted the ship

"No satellites, no ships, no armies, no ground defenses of any kind. It's just him."

"And that's enough." Responded Nebula

The planet was a scenic lush tropical fauna. It surrounded a small shed on a farm. A scarecrow made of Thanos' armour was nearby even though there was nothing to scare. As the ship landed quietly near the house, the group saw Thanos in the distance walking among his crops, harvesting fruit, and putting them in a sack. He was walking over to the shed, with a dragging quality to his legs, like it pained him to walk.

After an agonising few minutes, Thor gave the signal and Bruce and Rhodey burst in the shed to hold Thanos down. Thor blasted him with lightning before slicing off the Infinity Gauntlet. Steve walked in with Natasha right behind him. He stared at Thanos murderously. Thanos' whole left side was burnt black with blisters. Steve thought he looked almost pathetic compared to when he had destroyed them. Rocket went over to the sliced off Infinity Gauntlet, and kicked it over.

"Oh no." he murmured as everyone looked down and realized that there were no stones in it.

"Where are they?" interrogated Steve

"Answer the question!" bellowed Thor

Thanos looked at them and spoke slowly "The universe required correction. After that, the stones served no purpose, beyond temptation."

"You murdered TRILLIONS!" howled Hulk, his mind taking over from Bruce's in his anger.

"You should be grateful." Thanos coldly replied to which Hulk punched him in response.

"Where are the Stones?" asked Natasha, dreading the answer.

"Gone." Was Thanos' response "Reduced to atoms I used the stones to destroy the stones. It nearly killed me. But the work is done. It always will be." Thanos sat up with pride "I am... inevitable."

"We have to tear this place apart, he-he-he has to be lying." Stuttered Rhodey in denial.

"My father is many things. A liar is not one of them." Nebula coldly explained.

"Ah, thank you, daughter." Replied Thanos with gratitude to Nebula's discomfort "Perhaps I treated you too harshly-"

Suddenly Thor raised his axe and before anyone could stop him, he sliced Thanos' head off in one quick swoop. His limp body fell on the ground as Nebula wiped some blood that splattered on her.

The room was deathly quiet after that.

"What... What did you do?" asked Rocket.

In a broken voice, in full realization of what he'd done, simply replied:

"I went for the head."

Thor slowly walked out of the shed, no real purpose in his steps as the rest of the team processed what just happened. They stared at the corpse of Thanos and the empty infinity gauntlet. One by one they had accepted the awful truth. The Avengers had lost, and nothing would ever change that.
