Chapter 28

Still thinking or resting? Those lines under her eyes are showing more and more. That's understandable. Her display of frustration earlier is not. The outcome is disappointing but she should be expecting it. Did she think painting herself as a victim would work? Only those who are soft-hearted would be easily persuaded. One with a history of stealing and killing and a reputation as a ruthless criminal would not. If it would be that easy, there's no need for Aria. Did she think she can do what Aria couldn't? "Have you ever thought that maybe she's not attracted to you." Those eyes are no longer closed. She heard. Is she offended? There's no need to be. She should know she doesn't have the sex appeal that Vivien has or Aria has. She should know what type of person she's dealing with. "I think…a distraction will help."

"What?" Adalyn asked since she's not sure what Doc meant but understood the last comment she made and didn't appreciate it. Hours ago, she didn't have any suggestion other than saying it's not going to work so what does she mean by distraction?

"Vivien, she might be able to help." She's not here but it wouldn't take long to get her here though but looks like Adalyn disagrees. She no longer looks offended. That's a look of sudden realization. Did she just realize why Vivien is hired?

Hire more females to look after the former diamond thief. That's what she said. She never said it was for this purpose. "I'm a hundred percent sure it wouldn't work with Vivien either. She doesn't like that type and she thinks Vivien is being forced too." Adalyn said, frustrated with the outcome, then realized the mistake of saying too much after getting a question. 'Why would she think that?' is a good question. Admitting the mistake isn't going to help. Besides, "Did you think she wouldn't be able to figure it out?" She should know that Vivien was being way too nice. Who would want that type? Men do but not all men and not an attractive woman who's interested in woman. "She asked if Vivien works for him." Now she should know why the former crime boss doesn't agree. It's not just because he's the son of her father's killer.

"What did you say?"

That's an odd question. Did she think it would make a difference if I said no? Did she think I can say I don't know? How is that going to help? "I said…she has a choice. If you had told me she wasn't involved in that, I would've thought of something better to say." It's not only her fault. Aria wasn't specific either. All they said was she used to be the boss and her expertise is in stealing. They didn't say she wasn't involved in drug trafficking or human trafficking. Not saying that doesn't mean she's not. It did sound like she was since Aria said she was treated like a prostitute which now doesn't seem to make much sense.

"She might not have been involved but she did…I don't know, maybe they're just rumors."

Did what? Slept with prostitutes? Maybe she did but that doesn't mean she's not disgusted with those who runs the business. Maybe she didn't. "Maybe they are just rumors. I mean, she doesn't seem as bad as Aria says." If she is, she would've taken advantage of

"What are you saying? You think she's lying?"

"I think one of them is lying." Adalyn said, knowing what Doc is thinking this time even before she said that doesn't help. It doesn't. A polygraph test won't be able to tell either. As unstable as Aria seems, the detail she gave of that moment on the plane is very convincing. "I think it would be better to keep Aria away from her. Let me try." There's that look again. She's probably thinking how when it didn't work one hour ago. Well, twenty eight years of my life can't be told in a day, let alone 30 minutes. Getting anyone's trust would need more time especially one who has a lot of enemies. Sometimes all it takes is the right person and if that doesn't work, then…Is it time? She just got a call so... "I'll get her."

"right, him" Adalyn didn't apologize to Doc since she too was using the correct pronoun. It's not hard to remember since the former diamond thief does look like a man with the disguise on. It would be easier to refer to her as him as Aria always does. What is she doing? She should be inside looking after…There's no need to ask the guard since Aria just opened the door. "What's wrong?" Adalyn asked after being pulled inside, then immediately had regrets after getting a question and a face filled with anger that forced her to take a few steps back not because Aria is not wearing her mask but because Aria is acting like a jealous girlfriend who just found out her lover made out with someone else.

"Did you?"

The first time is loud and clear. There's no need to repeat. Just need time to think. Would she believe no? Probably not. If anyone else heard, they too would be wondering what actually happened in the cabin in the yacht besides talking. "What did he say?" Adalyn asked, using the same male pronoun as Aria did but realized it doesn't matter which pronoun is used since Aria isn't falling for it. Some do answer the questions when asked. It obviously doesn't work with her. It's time to explain before she does something unpredictable again. She doesn't need to know everything though. All she needs to know is that the kiss did happen for a very good reason.

"Was that her idea?"

Her? Does she mean Doc's or her ex's? "It just happened. I didn't plan on it. I couldn't get him to trust me so I thought if I could show him what I was willing to do, then maybe he will. I wasn't going to sleep with him. Trust me. I wasn't. I would never." That's necessary in case she thinks I'm interested in her ex. Vivien did say she was acting like a jealous girlfriend. Vivien wasn't exaggerating.

"Is that the only reason?"

Should've never told her I'm a lawyer. No one trusts lawyers. Just how much does she know? Probably enough to know what happened since she wouldn't be acting this way. Sometimes there's no need to give out more information than necessary. This time, it's necessary but there's no need to give her all the details. All she needs to know is that kissing her was to get her trust and more importantly, it's to see if it could trigger her memory. "That's what I was thinking." Clear enough? Probably not since she is looking like I'm crazy. "I thought it would work." It was a stupid idea but at that moment, it didn't seem that way. She should know that it could since she said it herself that it did on the plane at that moment when they did it which made a lot of sense because people don't want to remember their painful moments but love, most would.

"Don't let him touch you again."

"Aria, believe me, I have no interest in him whatsoever." Adalyn responded, then realized she misheard and misunderstood Aria's concern. There weren't any cameras in that cabin, were there? Why would she say that?

"You don't know what he's capable of. I just don't want to see you get hurt…like I did. You will get your heart broken if you let him."

What! She looks fine but is she feeling all right? If Doc were here, she probably would want to give her a mental health assessment. This isn't the time ask since Doc is waiting. "Where is he?"

"Do you think he wouldn't be able to climb down from here?"

"What?" Adalyn quickly walked out to the balcony. This isn't a high rise but this is the 4th floor. It's not possible to climb to the one next door, is it? It would require a rope. Bed sheets would work too but the bed sheets are still here. "Where" Either Aria is suggesting that it is possible or trying to get me worried for making a move on her ex. Why didn't she just say she's in the bathroom?

"What's the matter?" Lucy said in a calm but frustrated tone since she wasn't expecting Aria to still be here because a moment ago, she seemed upset after finding out what Adalyn had tried to do an hour ago in the yacht. "Is it time?" There must be a reason for Adalyn to be here since it's not dinner time yet. It is? "Can I have a gun?" Francois' suggestion didn't seem like it would help but now does. Getting denied is expected. Getting escorted to another room is too. Aria isn't allowed to tag along for some reason. Is having 2 guards along necessary? This is a fancy hotel in an island. What do they think I can do? Run away or threaten the guests to get away which is impossible here since there are no guests in sight just two men with dark shades and masks standing outside of the door down the hall. "I'm not going to use it. I just want to protect myself." Lucy tried one more time even though she knew it won't work.

"Listen to me. You die. We all die. No one is going to die. Okay? I promise."

There she goes with the promises. Doesn't she know how dishonest that sounds coming from a lawyer? And what's with the touching again? Is my beard falling off?

"go"

She's not coming? Guess there's no need to since Doc is inside but who is this guy? He's not

"Welcome"

His face may be half covered but even if he's not wearing a mask, he can't be Schaeffer's son. He's too old. He's…maybe he's another one of Schaeffer's sons?

"You know who he is?"

There must be a reason why Doc asked. "Should I?"

"How about now?" He pulls his face mask down.

What the hell? He must be expecting this since he's laughing. Doc is too. She knows him? How? He can't be. It's obviously just a disguise. There's no way. "haha, you really had me fooled" They're not laughing now. Why is he apologizing?

"really, I am."

"Really?" Lucy said, expecting Doc to explain but is confused as to why she's looking confused.

"I can show you my ID but you'd probably think that's fake too."

"mhm" Lucy said, keeping her distance from this look-alike who seems to have given up since he's not saying anything else and looking at Doc as if waiting for her to explain. Her explanation is short. His is a little longer. For a guy in his 70's, he sounds very intelligent but is he serious? It's too early for April Fool's. It's too late for Halloween. What's the point of this if he's not? Does she expect me to believe this?

"I would call the manager to prove it but this is confidential."

Is the joke over yet?

"I hope you can help, I can't, not by myself."

Is the joke over yet? That never came but he did leave with an apology and an offer that sounds too good to be true. Stay for free forever? Does he know who I am? "What the hell is going on?"

"Which part don't you believe or do you think they're not capable?"

She's right. They're known to use poison to kill their political opponents and anyone who doesn't obey or agree. They're known to force the wealthy to give up portions of their wealth in exchange for their lives. They've got Americans fighting against each other without using any weapons. They're no different from gangsters and pimps but they sure are smarter. But bombs? How is that possible? Even if they did plant bombs in every one of the islands, would they still work? That's over a decade ago. Isn't it? "Does the government know about this?" If they know, then the government must.

"Even if he does, do you think he cares?"

"He?"

"I know you don't live here but you do know what's happening now, don't you?"

She must think I live under a rock. The entire world is laughing at the clown.

"You do know the election is tomorrow, don't you?"

Now she's beginning to sound like Anthony. Just because I don't live here doesn't mean I don't know. Only the blind wouldn't notice the signs in Honolulu. If they can see, they too would be wondering why anyone would want to waste their money in buying those ugly looking red caps. "So?"

"Hawaii is a blue state."

Jesus Christ. "ssso?" Just get to the point. She did and the point she's trying to make actually doesn't sound all that crazy considering what dictators have done in the past to seize power. One less blue state is more chances for him to win again. Anthony did say there's a deadline. This makes sense. But damn. Whoever thought of this is cruel. But this can't be. They have the technology but no one can predict the future. "I thought you said you don't know what the key is for."

"We don't."

Huh? She must be tired or she can't keep track of all her lies.

"All we know is something happened. You were there. It collapsed, right? Why would they be looking for it now? Why not 10 years ago? Or 4 years ago? Why now?"

There she goes again with all the questions.

"Maybe the key can activate them or…deactivate them. I don't know."

Don't know is not a good answer. That's one crazy theory. "Maybe it's to open the safe. Maybe there's gold and diamonds in it, rare ones, you know how much rare ones worth? millions, now doesn't that sound more likely?" It wouldn't if someone found a bomb somewhere but she didn't say that. It wouldn't if she knows what's in that sea urchin thing they found. She didn't mention that either so she must not know. "Where we going?" Wherever the destination is, it's not close by. It's confidential too since she didn't let anyone tag along except for Adalyn and two guards. "What's the hurry?" She must be since the driver is going way over the 25mph.

"Ever seen the sunset before?"

She's kidding right? Sunsets are nice but not with them. Besides, it's still too early. "you know, the beach would be a better place to watch sunsets."

"yes it is"

Okay. That's not good. The beach on the other side is going to take awhile. Maybe we're going to look at the sea urchin thing? Anthony did say it's on the other side of this island. Does she have clearance though? She did say she doesn't work for the government but that doesn't mean it's true. The driver doesn't look like a cop but looks can be deceiving. He hasn't said a word just like this woman with the visible tattoo on her forearm who probably still thinks I'm a perv just like his coworker here. He doesn't look like a cop but is acting like an undercover agent since he's looking around. Maybe he's never been here before? Adalyn looks like she has since she's looking straight ahead, looking like she's thinking. Still thinking of what happened earlier? Well, she never said Aria doesn't know. How was I suppose to know that no one knows? If no one knows, then that must mean there were no cameras. If she doesn't want anyone to know, then it could be her idea, definitely not Aria's. Maybe someone gave her that idea? She doesn't look like the naïve type but desperate ones are the ones who can be easily manipulated. So what is she thinking now? Whatever it is, she must know what's ahead won't change my mind since she doesn't look thrilled to be here. Can't blame her. This area is crappy. The road here needs to be paved. The landscape is definitely not as nice as the hotel's. All the houses are small and old. Is this it? This is not a place for a millionaire. He can't be inside. Can he? There's no one guarding the house. This would be a great decoy if he is. No one would suspect anything. The driver and the guards aren't allowed to go in which makes sense but what's inside doesn't. Nothing is in here, no couch, no furniture, nothing. "What are we doing here?" This doesn't look like a place to meet even if he doesn't want anyone to know.

"What do you think this is?...or used to be?"

Jesus Christ. "Just tell me. I'm hungry. I'm tired." That worked and this time, the explanation is more believable. Jack couldn't have done it alone. He had to have help. Only computer geeks would know how everything works in the underground chamber. Only they would know what happened to the images of all the keys. One of them used to live here doesn't sound impossible but why would she think it's in this house? "you mean the keys? the keys are in here?" That needs to be asked since she's not being clear.

"Do you think that's possible?"

Asking me? "Sure, if he worked for Jack, then he could've taken them. Maybe he has all of them. Maybe Jack made a mistake. Maybe Brooke never had it. Did you look thru every inch of this place?" That's a lot of maybes but that's not a stupid question. It could be behind the walls. There could be a secret room behind it or underneath it. The only way to find out is take this house apart so why didn't she? "You don't think there's a bomb in here, do you?" Let's get out of here even if she doesn't think so. There's nothing inside but it's hot and smells. No wonder Adalyn stayed outside. Outside is warm too but at least, there's fresh air. "If you want, I can get some guys comb thru this place." A background check first would be necessary. Then find out what he's like. His neighbors might not know. His friends and family would. But why would a computer geek live here? He should be able to afford a better place if he worked for Jack. Just a hideout maybe? "How did you find this?" Whoever he is might know where Jack kept the money too. No answer is given, not even his name. Don't know or can't disclose? It wouldn't be hard to find out if this is his house. Just need to make a call. Permission is denied. Fine. What a waste of time. What is the point of this? Did she expect me to know where he could have hidden it? This is getting weird. Why show it to me when she could've just told me? She doesn't think I've been there before, does she? Nothing looks familiar except the palm trees.

The ride back is quiet as expected. Everybody is acting weird especially Francois who refused to to stay inside the room which is understandable because this place is even more beautiful and probably more expensive than the $2000 per night hotel in the island of Giudecca in Venice. Tower palm trees are everywhere. Temperature is perfect at this time. Everywhere is clean. The air quality seems to be better here too. Eating out under the canopy shades with the ocean view is definitely better than the balcony in the room. He's right about this restaurant too. Obviously, he has been here before since he has a lot to say about the food, what's good, what's not, and how much he preferred the hotel in Sensai Lanai over this one. Hot springs, private hot spa, horseback riding, zip line? Does he know he's not here to have fun? Maybe he's trying to make the best of the situation? Whatever his reason is, he's helpful since his presence kept Aria from speaking her mind. It changed Adalyn's mind too since she joined the table. Her reason for doing so is obvious but what does she think she can do if he again gives out more information than he should? This is a public place. There are others around. Thankfully this time, he didn't say anything embarrassing but whatever he said seems to have affected her since she's been extremely quiet just like Holly has been. Maybe she wants to but this isn't the place or time to talk? This is the time to eat. Dinner is satisfying. Sunset is beautiful but watching it with them is weird. What's even more weird is Aria's suggestion. Why would she still think sleeping here is a good idea?

"It'll help if we spend more time together."

She's joking, right? Adalyn is not showing any signs of disapproval which is odd. Did she already forget what happened on the plane? Did she already forget the promise she made 3 hours ago? Just because Aria has been behaving herself, it doesn't mean she will continue to. "Come here." Lucy said, using the come hither gesture towards Adalyn. There's no need to let Aria know. Only Adalyn needs to. She asked for it and now she will know what will happen if she allows Aria to stay. "I don't want her here. Okay?" Lucy went into the bathroom without waiting to see what she would do. It should work unless she doesn't care if Francois knows. She should since she doesn't want anyone to know and he should because if he finds out what his daughter was 'willing' to do, he would feel even more guilty than he does now. No doubt, he would be even more devastated than losing his only son, the one whom he had big plans for ever since he was born, the one whom he relied on, the one who put him in a coma.

Part 2 - 05/10/22

It wasn't hard to figure out. Every family has issues. Her attitude towards Francois is justified. Anyone in her situation would be mad at the one who turned her life upside down even if he is a family friend. The problem is her story isn't convincing since it lacked detail. All it took was a simple question to the right person to find out the truth. How long have you known her mother? His instant reaction gave it away. He didn't continue to hide it. There's no need to since hiding it was to protect Adalyn from his enemies which obviously didn't work. It would've if he wasn't placed in the hospital where her mother worked as a nurse. It would've if her mother didn't recognize him. It would've if her mother had done nothing and left him in that comatose state. It was fate, he thought, that brought his first love back to him. It was punishment, he later realized, after she became ill with the virus that also took his son's life. It's really sad, one that is more believable. There's no reason for him to lie since the answer remains the same. No way I'm going to agree.

"I meant you too." The warning worked but to be allowed to sleep alone is denied which is expected; just didn't expect Adalyn to continue to deny her relationship with Francois. She has a point though. A father is the one who raised the child not the one who provided the ingredient to the making of a child. Does she really think I care though? Apparently she does since she voluntarily gave her side of the story without being asked this time. Getting tricked and lied to by her own mother? That's one hell of a story; Sounds too stupid to be true. She doesn't even look like the type that would volunteer in a hospital. Lawyers don't do that. Didn't she find her mother's suggestion strange? How does talking to a stranger in a comatose state help relieve stress? If she fell for it, then she must not be a good lawyer. Whether it's true or not, it still won't change my mind if that's her intent. Oddly, nothing could change hers.

Next day

Falling asleep when the mind is tired isn't difficult. The time difference made a difference. But it would still be hard to do so without making sure it is safe to do so.

Is she still upset? She was this morning. Anyone would be shocked to find that one of their legs is tied to the bed. Anyone would wonder what else happened while she was deep asleep. Sorry but it's her fault. She shouldn't have cuffed me to the bed.

"Are we there yet?" Lucy followed in frustration since the ride took longer than yesterday's and now walking on rocks and the hard ground without hiking shoes hurts.

"It's peaceful here, isn't it?"

Is this it? "This doesn't look familiar." No houses can be seen, just red dirt, dry grass, a few trees and a lot of rocks and boulders. This view with the blue sky, the ocean, and the land is nice though but this is not a good weather to be wearing a male disguise.

"No one can hear you if you scream."

Say what? Is she talking to me? "whoa" Lucy takes a few steps back from the female guard who looks surprised too after having 2 guns aimed at her.

"So tell me, who do you work for?"

No waaay. Her? How is that possible? She doesn't even talk. Why is she looking at Adalyn?

"What happened?" Adalyn asked.

Good question. The perv knows. The driver knows yet she wasn't informed. Oh, this is not good. This could only mean Doc doesn't trust her.

"She took pictures."

Pictures of what? Doc didn't continue but it was enough for Adalyn to understand since she asked for an explanation. What…the heck? No wonder she ignored me, she can't speak. Are they having an argument? Their hands are moving very fast. They both look furious.

"There's a misunderstanding."

Really? Whatever the misunderstanding is, it seems that Doc has no interest in finding out since she asked the same question again with a warning and a time limit that no one can get out of unless that person can fly. Two shots to the ground got Adalyn to stop talking and the deaf to take the warning seriously. So she can speak? The three words 'I didn't know' can be understood but the rest are incomprehensible along with her hand gestures. Why is she pointing at me? "What did she say?"

"She said the camera took a video of you by accident…when you…hit on her in the helicopter." Adalyn said.

"What!" No wonder she said it's a misunderstanding. "I just asked if she needed help. That's all. I did not hit on her. I wasn't hitting on you." That's important but apparently not to Doc since she asked for her gun, phone and whatever electronic devices and weapons she has. That means she doesn't believe her. Adalyn does though since it was her idea to take pictures. There is nothing wrong with that. Anyone would be curious to see what the cave and those creatures look like but there's definitely no reason to take pictures of the house from yesterday unless she was told to. Adalyn is signing again so she probably didn't tell her to.

"I didn't!"

The sound of those 2 words came out clear this time but it wasn't convincing enough to change Doc's mind. The proof would be in the phone or camera. So why is she not moving? Does she not understand what Doc just asked her to do?

"Angel, put your hands behind your head, knees on the ground" Adalyn said.

Now she gets it. Maybe she couldn't read Doc's lips from where she's standing but she should understand she needs to provide the password without being asked so why is she being uncooperative? What is she saying now? That's a lot of hand movements for a few numbers. What's happening?

"I said put it down!" Adalyn said.

"What are you doing?"

That would've been a good question it was asked earlier. Now it's a little late. It must be stress or Doc's brain is overloaded with science stuff because she should know why Adalyn is pointing the gun at the perv. I knew it. He's the spy. But how does she know? What did Angel say? Whatever it is, he's going to deny it. "Hey man, you're looking very guilty right now so just put it down. Okay? No one gets hurt." Clear enough? Yup, he got it. He has a lot to say too. He's not just denying it. He's pointing fingers at Angel. This is getting confusing but it's not hard to find the truth.

"Give me your phone." Adalyn said.

That might work but it's not going to prove anything if he already deleted everything. It's not going to prove anything if he did take pictures of me. He's a perv. It's just going to be a waste of time. He could've used the hotel phone to…shit. "Call Aria!" Lucy said, expecting Doc to get it by now since she seems smarter than Adalyn but obviously not at this moment. "CALL your guys, see if they're okay!"

He accused her. She accused him. The situation did seem familiar but the moment of déjà vu didn't appear until he hesitantly handed his phone over to Adalyn. It happened many years ago to one of the guys who was suspected of being the leaker. He knew he would be discovered so he put the blame on someone else but no one knew his true intention until the police arrived. Stalling was all he could do.

"You have signal?"

Oh fuck. No one does?

"Stay here. I'm going to try over there."

Yes you do that Doc but there's no need to. There's a faster way. "Give it to me." Lucy said to the perv. Saying it once never works. Sometimes clarification is needed. "If you're innocent, then give it to me." His bloated head didn't affect his brain after all.

"What are you doing?" Adalyn asked.

"Nothing if she cooperates." She should know by now Angel is the one so why is she still defending her? "Are you going to cooperate or do I have to put a hole in your leg?" Okay then. "I'm going to count to 3, 1…2…" Something came out but it doesn't sound like wait. Whatever it is she's saying with her hands, Adalyn is clearly shocked by it. Now she looks furious. She probably just found out she's been lied to.

"You should've told me!"

Yup. She found out.

"They have her sister."

Oh shit. Some do it for money. Some are forced to. This is forgivable but continuing to hide it is not. It's possible she doesn't know who they are but how could she not know if they're Russians? "What do they look like? Do they have a name? Are they here?" Don't know? Maybe they hid their face? It's possible she doesn't know where they are. Coming up here isn't her idea. "Let's go." Staying here any longer isn't going to help. Let's hope they're not at the hotel. Let's hope they're not coming up here. Let's hope Doc can…yup, she got a signal, probably a weak one since she's talking very loudly and slowly. No threats were given. No warnings were given. No explanation is needed to know she's concerned since she's giving instructions. Whoever Riley is, Doc must not trust him since she is saying the same thing over and over again like a mother talking to her child. "She has a kid?" Lucy asked Adalyn but didn't get an answer. Don't know or none of my business? Probably the latter. That's fine. I don't need to know but she should know why I need the phone so why is she still refusing to give it to me? No signal should not be the reason since Doc's phone is working in this area.

"Let's go!"

Uh oh. That's not a look of good news. "Do they have them?"

"No."

Oh. No is good but it doesn't mean they're not in the hotel. They could be waiting for the right opportunity.

"Step on it"

Yes. Hurry. It's going to take 45 minutes. Anything can happen. There's no need to wait to get more answers though. "Did you check her phone?" Lucy asked, wondering why Adalyn looks confused. God, what is wrong with her? A confession does not mean there's nothing in her phone. This is not the time to be upset for failing to notice. "Ask her how she contacts them?"

"I don't."

She can hear me?

"What do you mean you don't?" Adalyn asked along with using sign language.

Good question. Oh crap. There's no need to wait for an answer. There's only one reason. "Shut off the phone." Why is she holding onto Adalyn's wrists? Why is she not allowing Adalyn to do so? This time, waiting for an answer is necessary. Her nervousness can be seen. Is she begging? Oh crap. "They'll know something is wrong if it's shut off." Lucy said without waiting for Adalyn to translate. Damn it. They're tracking her. This is not good. They know where we are. "Doc, I really think we should call for help." Lucy said, wondering why she has her eyes closed. Headache or thinking of what to do?

"I have more people comin, don't worry."

Oh. That's good to know. Having Anthony's helpers would be better though. Having an expert on cell phones would help too. What will happen if it's out of power? She probably doesn't know so there's no need to ask. Can't do anything now except ask questions she might know the answers to. "Do they have any unique features? Like tattoos or scars?" No? "Do they have an accent, British, Australian, Russian…..am I talking too fast?" Adalyn looks confused too.
