AN: Behold, the closest thing to romance I will probably ever write.
Vee leaned back on the bench, gazing up at the clear night sky.
"Mind if I sit down?" Vee looked over her shoulder to see Masha approaching, a can of soda in each hand.
Vee shrugged. "Sure, go ahead."
Mash sat down aside her and offered one of the sodas. Vee accepted and popped the cap, Masha doing the same. The two took a few sips in silence before Masha spoke up. "So… You and Luz?"
Vee looked over. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, just… the two of you seem awfully… close, you know."
"Uhm… yeah, I guess… Why?"
Masha scoffed and rolled her eyes. "I mean you like her, don't you?"
"Well yeah, why els-" Vee's eyes widened. "Oh you mean like, romantically?"
"What else would I mean?" Masha gave her a light punch to the arm. "Silly."
"Oh, no," Vee said with a laugh. "Titan no. We uh… we don't see each other that way."
Masha raised an eyebrow at the unfamiliar expression but otherwise didn't comment on it. "Why not? I mean, you seem to be a bit more than 'just friends.'"
"Well, the thing is Luz is… how do I put this… she's, uh…"
Masha gave a small frown. "A girl?" she finished.
Vee looked over in confusion. "What? No. Why would that matter?"
Masha shrugged. "I dunno, it does to some people."
"Huh. Weird. But getting back on track, Luz… I guess…" Vee sighed. "Luz is just the first person to accept me for who I am. Like, before I met her I always felt like I had to hide who I am."
Mahsa suddenly fond herself very interested in her soda. "That… must have been hard…" she muttered.
"And Luz… I mean, she's great, but… I just... can't bring myself to feel that way about her, you know?" Vee took a sip of her soda before continuing. "Plus, yesterday she kinda asked if it would be okay to call me her sister." That last part was probably a bit personal, but surely she could trust Masha, right?
"…Okay, yeah, I could see how that could make things awkward," Masha admitted. "…So what'd you say?" she asked.
"…That I'd think about it," Vee said meekly.
"Oh," Masha said somewhat disappointedly. "Well, do you want to?"
"…I don't… not want to."
"Then go for it!" Masha encouraged.
Vee figited. "But… what would her mom think?"
"Do you think she's the kind of person who would say 'no' to that?" Masha took a drink. "That's a real question by the way, I wouldn't know."
Vee was silent as she thought about that. She didn't get a chance to answer though before a pair of arms came from behind the bench and wrapped around them both.
"Hey girls!" Luz said brightly. "Campfire's on, so who wants s'mores?"
Vee perked up. "Ooh, sounds good." She looked to Masha. "You coming?"
"You go on without me," Masha said, shaking her can. "I'm gonna finish this up first."
"Okay then, come on Vee," Luz pulled her arms off her friends allowing Vee to stand. Masha watched the two as they walked off.
As they left, Vee said something to Luz. They were already too far away for Masha to make it out, but whatever was said was enough for Luz to pull her in to a big ol' hug. Masha smiled at the sight.
