Tree of Life interior, Kanto.

The endless caverns of the Tree of Life were still. Most of its denizens slept soundly as the night's emergence began. High in the tree's chambers, a Ralts dangled its feet over a cliff with a raging waterfall beside him. This Ralts, once a human named Shaun, watched as an Altaria soared over the cliff in front of him before gently landing on a large nest. In it, there was a single Swablu, who eagerly opened its mouth when it saw the berry in its parent's mouth. As it ravenously tore through its food, the Altaria nestled around it, covering it tightly with its cloud-like wings.

Shaun sighed, resting his head in his hands. He often wondered about his father. If, when all was said and done, he'd retire from that awful business. Maybe he and his dad could have finally gone home, using the money he got to help his mom. Then they could have gone back to being a normal family. Everything could have been good again. But...that wasn't possible anymore.

From behind, a certain someone appeared. "What are you moping around for?" Asked Mew, flying out over the cliff. She floated through the air, rolling like a ball as if gravity didn't exist at all. She smiled at him brightly. "Feeling tired, bud? It is getting a little late."

This is what Shaun had to deal with all the time these days. He had gotten used to it, and honestly, Mew wasn't bad mostly. As long as he didn't strike up an attitude with her, she was generous with anything he asked. He knew leaving was out of the question. Without his dad, there was nothing left out there for him. But there were times he still couldn't help but to be sad. He missed his mother immensely, and when he couldn't sleep, often asked Mew for whatever comfort she could offer.

Naturally, she could transform into anything he wanted when sleep was hard to find. An Altaria's fluffy wings, the soft, warm fur of a Flareon, and many others. But what he asked for most was for the comfort of a human adult woman. Though she wished she could look into his mind to see what his mother looked like, Mew kept her side of the promise they made. So far, Shaun had never tried to leave the tree, so she abided his every wish.

Shaun looked up at her. "...Nah," He said slowly.

Immediately, Mew grabbed him by the hand and whisked him off when she heard that. "Great!" She chirped. "Then I know just the thing to wear you out!"

She flew him up high before looping back around, sailing down the cliffside. Shaun's eyes were wide, but he did not scream. He was mostly used to her antics by now. Mew took him through all sorts of caverns faster than he could keep up. Crystals in the walls flew past them, seemingly tearing through the air like knives. Eventually, they landed on a circular, green area with lots of rocks scattered around.

Gently, the two touched down in the area. Mew went over to one of the larger boulders, casually picking off a small pebble from it and lightly flicking it toward Shaun. He managed to step out of the way, earning an impressed whistle from Mew.

"Hey, your instincts are getting better already!" Commended Mew.

Shaun did not react much to this. Mew had been doing stuff like this since he'd gotten here. "Why are we here?" He asked.

Teleporting next to him, Mew took his small hand and pointed it at one of the rocks. "You said you weren't tired even though it was late, so maybe we can tire you out with some training?"

Though the prospect of being able to move things with his mind seemed enticing at first, Shaun had long-since abandoned the idea of him ever being able to utilize his powers. "I don't know, Mew. We've tried so many times and I've always failed. Maybe it's just time that I give it up."

"Nonsense!" Cheerily responded Mew. "You only became a Pokemon recently, so this stuff may be a bit harder for you to pick up. But you'll only get better by trying! Besides, you're not tired, and you looked bored anyways."

At this point, Shaun knew there was no reasoning with her. If he couldn't sway her the first time, he was stuck doing whatever she wanted. He gave a resigned sigh and replied, "...Fine." Tentatively, the young boy renched his hand from Mew's grip to point it at one of the large boulders himself. Maybe he could tire himself out by trying enough so he'd be left alone.

Still, the idea of this actually working did worm its way into his mind from time to time, even though he'd mostly given up hope on it. It couldn't hurt to at least try in case it did work eventually. Mew's directions on this front were surprisingly helpful. A Psychic-Type was like a Water-Type in the sense that serenity is the key to their powers unless they're a Gyarados. He tried to empty his mind and focus on only the rock in front of him.

Then, it started to move.

A lime green glow encased the large boulder, causing it to tremble. Shaun gasped in shock when he saw this, losing his hold on the stone.

"No, no, keep going!" Urged Mew. "You've got this!"

Hearing her words, Shaun managed to keep focus on the boulder. To his elation, it began to rise from the ground. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. Was this really happening. Were the fruits of his labor finally paying off? With all of his might, he focused on the rock and held out both of his arms toward it. At this point, his version of focusing was just to tense up his body as much as possible and exert all the strength his tiny body could muster.

"I...I'm doing it!" He cried joyfully. It had been a long time since he laughed. Before Necrozma arrived. But seeing his success in front of him, and to feel this sudden rush of power, he couldn't help but to let one out.

Then, it dropped suddenly. Shaun's face fell. He flexed his fingers at it again to try to replicate his feat, but it did not budge. From behind it, Mew rolled out through the air, giggling to herself. She said, "Sorry about that, but I couldn't help but egg you on. I figured maybe if you believed it was working, it might have actually worked. Guess not, huh?"

Shaun's arms fell to his sides. His mouth was agape, in utter disbelief. "I…" He tried to find words, but no matter how much his mind raced, it couldn't come up with anything cohesive.

Mew came over to him, tapping him on the head to snap him out of it. "Don't look so glum, chum! We've still got all night to make this work!"

Her arm fell to her side when Shaun sat down and crossed his arms. Under his breath, all he could muster in response was, "...No thanks."

Mew's brow pursed in concern for him. Every day, he was more and more unenthusiastic about their playtime. She tried to mix things up a lot, but none of her toys or party tricks seemed to lift his spirits at all. She thought that helping him lift the rock would have given him hope to learn it, but he looked even more miserable than before.

She opened her mouth to say something to him when knowledge of a certain something going on entered her mind. "They're having a meeting?" She asked aloud. Mew had been watching the battle against the Nova Branch as it took place before returning to Shaun. She guessed this was a celebration. If they'd let her go, she'd have demolished the island in no time flat, but of course Lugia had to be petty. Maybe she should have gone anyways and mopped the floor with them before Giratina even got there just to wipe it in his smug face.

Shaun looked up at her with curiosity. "Meeting?" He asked. "Who is meeting?"

Mew waved him off, replying, "Oh, it's nothing for you to worry about. I'm just going to go pay a few...friends of mine a visit. I won't be long, so you stay here and don't get into any trouble, alright?" She snapped her fingers, summoning a multitude of toys from thin air that rained around him before summoning a white portal and flying through it.

Shaun stood there dumbfounded how Mew had just left him alone for the first time in days. He stared down at the toys at his feet for a while, occasionally tinkering with one before setting it back down in boredom. As he looked around, he spotted a few holes dotting the walls. Knowing how maze-like this place was, they were probably tunnels.

Mew was unpredictable. That much was made apparent to him the moment he met her. So, when she said she'd be 'right back,' he had no real way of measuring what that meant. For all he knew, she'd be gone for hours. "I doubt she'd mind if I did some exploring," He said aloud. "Besides I can just tell her I was looking for some hiding spots for when we play hide and seek so I doubt she'll have a problem."

He started making his way around the room. Most of the holes were out of reach for his short arms. Climbing atop one of the boulders, he hopped up, grabbing the edge of a tunnel with his fingertips. With effort, he managed to wriggle up and pull himself inside.

As he ventured through the tunnel, the natural sunlight that filtered through the tree faded, replaced by the luminescent glow of the myriad of crystals that grew throughout the tree. His first few times seeing them again were rough. Seeing them melt into monstrous beings that ate the members of his father's crew was something he would never forget. For a while, he refused to go near them, but they were nigh unavoidable here in the tree. Though he was still terrified of them, it was no longer paralyzingly so.

Eventually, Shaun poked his head out of the tunnel's opposite end, which ended up leading to another set of three more that branched out to other areas of the tree. These were much larger and rust-colored, decorated with equally-large crystals. Dropping from the hole, Shaun took a look around. Two of the paths led up, with one arching so high it looked more like only a Flying-Type could scale it. The third path seemed to go down slightly. Naturally, he took the path of least resistance.

The path led to more branching paths, to which Shaun continued to take the one that went down the most. At this point, he was interested in how far down the tree even went. He was pretty sure, based on the occasional murmur he caught from Mew, that it went far underground. It was doubtful he'd make it that far before Mew came back. After all, he could hardly comprehend the sheer size of this place either way. Mew might be somewhat mad when she found him, but she never got truly upset with him unless he was yelling at her.

Opening his mouth wide, Shaun let out a long yawn. Maybe the night was getting to him after all. Regardless, if he fell asleep, Mew would just find him anyways and it would be back to their normal schedule. He wanted to make the most of his temporary freedom. Shrugging off his fatigue as best as he could, Shaun continued downward. As he walked, he noticed the glow of the crystals becoming a bit smaller, dimming the light he had to work with.

From behind, he heard a sudden thud. It was followed by another one, louder than before. And then another. Something big was walking behind him, and on top of that, it was getting close. Each thud made the ground tremble underneath Shaun's feet a little more. He looked around for a place to hide, now regretting his decision to disobey Mew. The thuds increased in volume and impact until, from the darkness, a hulking golem of stone came into view.

It looked around curiously, making a variety of odd beeping noises. Shaun quickly tried to hide behind the nearest crystal. He recognized that thing. He remembered it hunting down him and his father, displaying no mercy to those it caught in its grasp. He covered his mouth as it neared to dull the sound of his rapid, fearful breaths. His heart was beating like crazy, to the point that he could hear it in his own head. He hoped beyond hope that this thing couldn't hear it as well.

Apparently, his prayers fell on deaf ears, since the god that presided within the tree was not there.

"R-R-E-E-GIROK," Droned the golem, followed by more incoherent beeping.

Its final step before reaching Shaun was heavy enough to lift him off the ground for a very brief moment, earning a yelp from the boy. In response to this, Regirock looked straight down at him with its myriad of yellow lights. Shaun felt his soul nearly leave his body as he stared into the faceless frame of the golem.

Without thinking, Shaun bolted from his hiding spot further into the tunnel. Regirock watched him go, beeping to itself in apparent disinterest before returning to its routine patrol. After all, what it had scanned was just another Pokemon to it. But Shaun did not know this. To the young boy, he only saw one of the things that hunted him before. A faceless, relentless killer. It was too much for him to bear.

So he ran. He ran and ran through the tunnel with no goal in mind other than to get as far away from Regirock as possible. The crystals lining the hall became smaller and less frequent the further he went. It wasn't long until he could barely see in front of him, but still, it was better than being near that thing.

He eventually came upon the tunnel's end, but where the wall met the floor, there was a small hole. It was still enough for him to easily fit through, so he did not spend much time weighing his options. He dove into the hole feet first, uncaring of what lay ahead compared to what was behind. The hole opened up into another dark room where Shaun fell to the ground in a heap, making him cry out in pain.

Wincing, Shaun looked up at the hole he came from to decide if he was safe. There wasn't anything else he saw that something that big could come down through, so he sighed in relief. When he sat up, he noticed a dim, purple glow far ahead. There was a small, curved tunnel from where he landed to the glow, obscuring his view of whatever it was. Seeing that he was safe, curiosity took over.

When Shaun came around the corner of the tunnel into the next room, his jaw went agape. Lining the floor, walls and ceiling of an utterly gigantic room were beautiful crystalline flowers. At their center, a massive one grew. It was so tall that it nearly touched the ceiling, and its gleaming petals stretched across every wall.

In wonderment, Shaun stumbled through the field of flowers. They shimmered all around him like stars of every color of the rainbow. It was utterly mesmerizing. Yet, this trance caused him to carelessly trip over one of them, sending him onto his back.

His cry of shock as he fell drowned out the noise of the flower twisting open. When it opened fully, a glowing orb manifested between two tips at its top, which then expanded outward to fully encompass the room.

The first thing Shaun saw when he opened his eyes again was something pink floating above him. "M-Mew?!" He shrieked, scuttling away from her. "I-I'm sorry for leaving the room!"

But he got no response from her. Tentatively, he dared to look back up at her. She was staring off into the distance at something else. "...Mew?" Asked Shaun. He got back up to his feet and walked toward her, slowly reaching his hand out to tap her to get her attention. Yet, when his hand met her fur, it passed right through.

Shaun retracted his hand in surprise. "Wh-what?"

There was a sudden start of noise from where Mew was looking. When he followed her gaze, he couldn't believe his eyes. Of all things, there was a group of people marching through, talking excitedly with one another. They wore thick vests and heavy-looking backpacks, leading Shaun to believe they were explorers.

"P-people?!" Shouted a shocked Shaun. How in the world did they even get this far into the tree. Right now, young Shaun did not think of his promise with Mew. Reaching out to his own kind seemed instinctual to him, momentarily forgetting what he had become.

He ran to them, frantically waving his arms to get their attention. "H-hey!" He cried. "Wait! Please help me!" As he neared them, he reached out for the hand of the man in front. He was a young, jolly-looking fellow who was eagerly chatting with a woman at his side. When Shaun touched his hand, just like with Mew, it went through like he wasn't there at all.

Shaun staggered backwards. He was already terrified before, and on top of it, now he had no idea what was happening.

"This place is unbelievable!" Excitedly exclaimed the man leading the group of explorers. "These tunnels seem to have no end! The Tree of Life is just as massive as the legends say, inside and out!"

Beside him, the woman seemed just as ecstatic, clapping to herself and failing to withhold an excited squeal. "And to think we're the first known group of people to document this place! Ooh, imagine if we discover an unknown Pokemon species here!"

A Larvitar, who walked near the man's feet, jumped up in excitement at the prospect of that, crying, "Lar, Larvitar!" Shaun was astounded by its size. Most Larvitar were only two feet tall at most, but this one was nearly double that size. It walked almost as tall as the man's elbows.

Mew suddenly flew by Shaun again, eliciting a cry of surprise from him. He fell on his backside, looking up to see Mew hovering over the group from behind. When the person at the back of the group, a dark-haired man with sunglasses, suddenly stopped walking and turned back to look at her, she disappeared from sight. He shrugged and turned back around, so Mew reappeared, silently following.

The flower's light dimmed for a moment, making the visions of Mew and these people momentarily freeze. Shaun's head swerved back and forth to look around the room as it faded in and out, shifting between the room with the flowers and the tunnel where the explorers walked. Then, the light returned, bringing with it new imagery.

There was a grand expanse of grass and water. Gargantuan crystal pillars held up a large overhang of stone above, leaving a long gash in the roof far above that stretched forward longer than Shaun could see. A cascade of bright sunlight fell through that gash, making the lakes and rivers that filled the seemingly-endless valley glimmer.

Shaun recognized this place. He remembered his father yelling at him to keep up a smile while he and his men came down to capture the Pokemon he befriended. It was not pleasant to see it again.

From one of the endless holes lining the walls, the explorers poked their heads out and let loose an array of impressed gasps or whistles when they laid their eyes on the valley. "Th-this is incredible!" Exclaimed the man who was at the head of the group. He stared up at the sky in awe as a flock of Altaria passed overhead. "Pokemon indigenous to Hoenn, here in Kanto?!"

"Lar!" Chirped the Larvitar. It pointed up at something excitedly.

When the man looked to where it pointed, he was left in awe. There was a massive, bulbous tree that he had mistaken for a stone growth with an odd shape. On its leaves far above, large fruits that looked like they were gleaming under the sun's rays sprouted down.

"I-Incredible!" He exclaimed. "That was a tree?!" He bumped fists with the Larvitar with a grin that was mirrored by it and said, "Excellent find, Larvitar. I can always count on you. To think that a tree could grow within a tree."

They heard a gasp from the woman, pointing out at the lake. She cried, "Look at that, John! In the water!"

Following her gaze, Shaun saw a group of Pokemon he didn't recognize surfacing from the lakeside. They looked like snails, hosting large yellowish shells on their backs. A much larger one with rows of spikes along its shell followed the rest.

"Omanyte!" The woman identified. "And an Omastar too! Those shouldn't be able to exist in a place cut off from mankind. Pokemon like that are only seen in protected areas when they're released from fossil restoration facilities!" She turned back to the man, John, excitedly. "Do you know what this means?! These Omanyte and Omastar lived without changing for millions of years, or perhaps even more!"

While the other members of their group took photos of the rare Pokemon, John smiled at her, appearing more enthralled with her than the tree. "And this place likely holds even greater sights and secrets within it. And yet, in spite of that, I still have my doubts they can hold a candle to the one in front of my eyes right now."

While they talked, Shaun noticed the man with sunglasses breaking off from the rest of the group. He approached a crystal and set down a jet black briefcase. From it, he took out a small drill.

Shaun gasped, racing toward the man. "Get away from it!" He cried. Then he remembered his last attempts to interact with them and stopped. Like he thought, the mysterious man did not react to his voice at all. It was as if he did not exist to them.

The man took out a glass phial and brought it near the crystal, then drilled off a tiny portion which fell into the phial. Tightly shutting the lid, the man pocketed the phial and quickly put the drill back within the briefcase before returning to the rest of the group. They had all been so preoccupied with the fossil Pokemon that they never noticed he was gone.

"It's a shame Sir Henrik could not follow us here," Lamented John. "Being an Aura Guardian, his ability to sense life would have proved invaluable on this mission." He sighed, then turned to the others. "Try to find a corner or an inlet where we can set up camp," He instructed. "The more shade, the better. We'll be here a while, but we don't want to disturb the natives."

Nodding, the rest of the group descended the hill to the mainland as quietly as they could. John wrapped his arm around the woman, earning a giggle of delight from her before she was swept off her feet by him. Though enamored with his antics, the woman tried her best to stay quiet as John carried her down with the others.

Another flicker occurred, though this one was more brief. Day suddenly became night, and Shaun was shone a makeshift campsite in a half-circular area of one of the valley's major walls. Some of the group appeared to be asleep on small mats while four others sat around a campfire. Shaun walked near, hoping the fire would offset the chill he was suddenly feeling, but alas, no luck.

John carefully watched the woman from before while he sat at the fire, hardly ever looking at anything else. "So," He said to the enigmatic man, the one who took the crystal, "Care to tell us your employer's name at least? I'm glad that he's helping us fund this expedition, but what's in it for him?"

"If you're really grateful, you won't ask again," Snapped the other man. "My employer funded this because he trusts you based on your prior exploits. You have your own job. Mine is only to find something rare here to cover the costs. Maybe our goals will end up the same. Maybe they won't." He put his hand over the pocket he put the phial in. "If your goal is successful, you'll meet him yourself. Until then, it's not up to me to reveal his name."

John gave him a look of discontent at that. "Sheesh. You don't have to be such a prude about it. But, I'll respect that since your employer has been a benefactor of ours for so long."

With a quick nod, the other man replied, "Then there's no need to talk about it anymore. Glad we're in agreement."

An awkward silence fell over the camp. John looked around, letting out a heavy breath through puffed cheeks and flexing his fingers in a failed attempt to alleviate his boredom. "...So," He said, "You got any-"

"Shh!" Hissed the man with sunglasses. He held up his finger, then froze except for his head, slowly looking around. Quietly, he asked, "...Do you hear that?"

Larvitar suddenly jumped to attention, staring out into the darkness and growling.

Shaun felt a frigid shiver crawl up his spine when he heard the familiar sound of crazed beeping. Whipping around, he saw Regirock once more, leering at him with its seven yellow eyes from the shadows. It held its arms toward him, making the boy's life flash before his eyes, then fired a Hyper Beam. Shaun screamed and shielded himself with his arms. But like everything else, the beam passed right through him, instead aiming for the camp.

John hardly had the time to blink before the beam was inches away from his face. Then, a miracle happened. Shrouded in a pink light, the Hyper Beam was frozen in place. The man with the sunglasses staggered backwards while the others fell over in shock. Those who were sleeping shot wide awake at the noise, letting loose an array of expressions of surprise when they saw the pelagic beam.

The beam was condensed into an orb, which shrunk until it was no longer visible. From where it had disappeared, Mew took its place. While the others all gasped seeing the mythical Pokemon, Mew turned to Regirock and nodded up at it, looking elsewhere. Acknowledging the silent order with more beeping, Regirock turned and began walking away.

"M-Mew!" Cried John and the woman at the same time. Mew turned to look at them curiously at the call of her name. The expedition team, now wide awake, stared up at her with awe and slack jaws.

The woman, daring to go closer to her than the others, said, "It's...incredible! The Pokemon only seen in myth, Mew! We may be the first people to document its existence!"

Chuckling, John came beside her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. "More importantly…" He smiled up at Mew and said, "We owe Mew our thanks. Were it not for Mew, whatever that thing was would have ended our exploring days for good."

Her eyes widened a bit when she realized she hadn't even thanked their savior. "M-my apologies, Mew!" She cried, bowing her head. "Thank you for saving us!"

Mew merely giggled at her.

The others tried to take photographs of her, but their cameras were surrounded by a pink glow and wrested from their hands. Mew took one of them in her small hands, fiddling with it with interest to see what it might do. When she figured out how it worked, she looked at the picture the camera had taken with surprise. The explorer team couldn't help but laugh seeing the Pokemon of myth so engrossed in the simple camera.

Unbeknownst to them, the man with sunglasses approached Mew from behind, brandishing a knife. Hearing his approach, she glanced back at him, and when she saw the knife, she bolted backward.

The others looked at her behavior with raised eyebrows until they saw what their companion held in their hand. John stepped forward angrily. "What do you think you're doing?!" He demanded. His Larvitar jumped near, ready to act against the man on John's order should it be necessary.

"...My intention," Said the enigmatic man, "Was not to harm it. I was merely going to cut off a piece of hair. I thought it wouldn't notice, but now it has to be troublesome for everyone." He jabbed a finger toward John. "Need I remind you that this expedition is funded solely on the goodwill of my employer right now? Even one strand of hair from Mew could cover the costs over a thousand times! Not to mention your goal here."

The others looked to John, who asked, "My goal? What are you talking about?!"

"Your organization wanted this expedition because you believed there was something here that could be used for medicinal purposes," He explained. Pointing to Mew, he added, "Mew is rumored to have the DNA of all Pokemon that exist! Do you not see how that could be useful for both of us? All I'm asking for is a small tuft of hair."

The man shoved John aside and stomped toward Mew. "Now come here," He hissed, raising the weapon. "This won't hurt a bit-"

A flash of magenta appeared in Mew's eyes, causing that same glow to surround the man and paralyze him. Before anyone could react, he was sent flying into a wall with a sickening crack. As he fell forward, the glass phial, now filled to the brim with a squirming red substance, rolled out from his pocket. Mew picked it up with Psychic, staring at it for a moment before turning back to the others.

Her eyes and fur were red with fury. Though it was just a vision, Shaun felt like she was staring right at him. Her gaze had an immense, crushing pressure behind it that paralyzed the young boy under it. Shaun felt like he was being squeezed, unable to even scream.

A sharp, loud noise rang out as the phial shattered, letting the red substance inside fall to the ground. It shrank, seemingly melding into the ground and folding over itself. It looked like a horrific malformation of blood and gel. Once it disappeared, the surrounding crystals suddenly became a deep, crimson red.

The woman ran forward, putting Mew's attention on herself, yelling, "We're not trying to hurt you!"

John ran to her, grabbing her by the shoulder. He cried, "Forget it! We need to leave!"

She wanted to retort until she saw one of the crystals near the fallen man melt into a gelatinous, red slime like the one that was in the phial. It crawled over to his motionless body, then latched on. John covered her eyes and turned her around so she couldn't see what happened next. Shaun was not so lucky. While the others ran away, his eyes were glued to the scene, unable to pry them away. It enveloped the man's body, seemingly merging with it before shrinking down into the grass.

Sneering at the explorers as they ran, Mew shook her head and teleported away.

Then, the light began flickering again and again, spastically changing what it showed. Shaun was exposed to horrific imagery of the explorers being hunted down one after another. There were screams of the helpless in every one of them. He would be shown Regirock cornering the group, then it would jump to one of them alone, being chased by one of the amorphous red monsters. In each one, there was always one less person than in the last. And he couldn't bring himself to look away no matter how much he tried to force himself to.

Three were left. John, the woman he accompanied, and the Larvitar. They ran through the hall with panicked looks on their pale faces toward Shaun. Behind them, one of the red monsters, posing vaguely as a Flygon, followed them. Eventually, the Larvitar had enough. It whipped around and stood tall with its arms wide to halt their pursuer's advance.

Noticing this, John stopped. "What are you doing?! Larvitar, keep moving!"

Larvitar shook its head, smiling to John before turning back to the monster and firing off a hail of Stone Edges at it. Unexpectedly, the body of the creature split apart, allowing the stones to sail right through before reforming. Larvitar's face fell. It mustered up what little courage it could and used it to run forward in an attempt to give its beloved master a little more time.

"LARVITAR!"

Smiling, Larvitar stood tall and bared its teeth at the creature with a smirk, accepting its fate. And then, that smirk fell flat when the red thing flew right over its head. It wasn't interested in Larvitar. It wanted its trainers. Larvitar, panicked, did the only thing it could think to do. It shot another attack up at what it thought was in between John and the cell. But, the attack went farther than Larvitar expected.

It impacted the roof, causing stones to rain down. John quickly tried to pull the woman back, but was too slow. One of them impacted her leg and crushed it underneath, eliciting an agonized wail from her.

"NO!" Cried John. He tried to pull her out to no avail, then went onto trying to pick up the stone. The noises of pain from the woman tore him apart. "Hang on!" He cried. "I'll get you out of here! We'll make it out!"

She shook her head. "F-forget it! John, just go!" Tears ran down her face. More than pain, they were tears of fear, knowing her time was up. She would die on this day. "Look at me," She said. John ignored her, still trying to pull at the stone. "John, look at me!"

With wide eyes and a face as white as snow, John did as she asked.

"...Go," She told him. Her voice was unconvincing, hardly more than a choked whisper. "Please."

John stood there, mouth agape and unable to form a response to that. He was frozen, his mind just shutting down. Then, he heard something. Beside her, more of the blood red substance began emerging from the ground. She let out a cry of terror, throwing her head back and wailing.

"EM-"

The last thing Shaun saw of them was the red substance leap upon her. The vision froze before it touched her, but he knew she was subjected to the same fate as his father's men. Behind him, the flower's light faded, and it returned to its original form. With it, the vision faded as well, returning Shaun to the dark room filled with flowers.

The room was nearly pitch black.

But Shaun was frozen stiff, still looking off to where he had last seen the two explorers. He stepped backwards unconsciously, but was unable to look away. Choked half-words escaped his mouth. He only stopped when his ankle hit something behind him.

He whipped around and looked down at what he touched. Somehow, his eyes widened even more. Before him was the open sky, and below him, a thousand-foot drop. Shaun fell on his backside, overwhelmed by the scale of what he saw.

"Am...am I outside…?" He wondered aloud.

There was a loud clamoring below. Shaun peered over the edge and saw something horrible. Thousands upon thousands of people crowded below. They wore metal armor over them, carrying varied weapons in hand as they marched toward the tree. To Shaun, they looked like knights. Now he really had no idea what was happening.

A sudden wave of dread washed over him when he heard the booming voice of Mew from above. "Begone from this place!" She roared. "Your kind have tried to destroy the Tree of Beginning time and time again, but no longer!"

Shaun was suddenly blinded by an intense light. He cried out, shielding his eyes. Through his hands, he tried to peer up at the light, gasping at what he saw. Above him, and even the tree itself, was what looked like a secondary sun. It burned the sky red, and its heat quickly brought down its wrath upon the ground as well. A pink barrier had arisen around the tree to protect it, but those below were not as lucky.

Wails of agony arose from below as the warring humans were set aflame in their armor. They had come for battle, but could never have been ready for this. Along with his eyes, Shaun now found himself on his hands and knees, desperately trying to block his ears as well. The screams of the burning soldiers assaulted his ears. He cried out in a desperate attempt to silence them, but to no avail. Their screams outweighed his own.

Mew soon put an end to their torment, throwing the miniature sun down upon the burning warriors. They never had the chance to know what hit them before they were obliterated without a trace. The world around Shaun flickered, though he did not see it, and suddenly, everything became quiet. Shaun only noticed this when he realized he could hear his own sobs.

He sat up, and where there was once a blinding sun, there was now an endless expanse of grey clouds. Grey snow poured down from them, swirling around the landscape below. With teary eyes, Shaun dared to look down at the battlefield, and found naught but a landscape of the same snow that poured down from the clouds.

One flake fell into his lap, and only when he picked it up did he realize it was not snow at all. It was ash, black and grey from burns. It was not snow that covered the lands, but the ashes of everything unfortunate enough to have been near the apocalyptic wrath of Mew. Trees, grass, stone and soil. All had been reduced to nothing but ashes and dust by Mew, save for the Tree of Life, surrounded by death. It only occured to Shaun after picking up the flake that what he was holding could have been the remains of a human.

He yelped, standing back up to his feet and throwing the flake off to be carried away by the wind, joining the endless other flakes of ash that sailed through the dark sigh. Staring off into this endless expanse of ash, Shaun realized Mew was far more of a monster than he thought. She had killed those explorers, burned thousands of others to a crisp, and did the same to his own father. And all this time, he had been playing along with her games.

The vision then faded, again leaving Shaun within the dark room. The second time flower he'd bumped into by accident slowly rolled away after its light faded. Shaun did not give it a second look before running. He didn't know where to, but he needed to run.

In the midst of the tree, in a room surrounded by stones, a white hole tore itself into existence. From it, Mew emerged, looking pleased. "Oh, Shaun!" She called. "I'm back! Sorry I took so long. Some old guy was…"

She trailed off when she looked around the room and found no trace of Shaun anywhere. With her Psychic power, she lifted the stones, figuring he might be hiding or sleeping behind them. Yet, the little Ralts was nowhere in sight. Mew huffed, dropping the stones with a loud thud and causing some to crumble.

"Of course he went off on his own," She said in annoyance. Shrugging, she sighed and said, "Well, I guess it's my fault for leaving him alone for so long. If it's a game of hide and seek he wants…"

Shaun needed to get away from Mew the monster. The boy ran and ran and ran through the bronze-colored tunnels until he found an opening. In it, there were Pokemon everywhere. Flocks of Flying-Types soared through the air or rested in their nests. Water-Types splashed about in the water, living their carefree lives. Countless others frolicked through the emerald green fields of grass and flowers. This was his chance. One of them had to know a way out.

He ran up to the nearest Pokemon he saw. It was a Sunflora among many others of its kind, though they had all gone to sleep during the night and used Ingrain to implant themselves into the ground. Just as the last Sunflora was about to follow their lead for the night, it noticed Shaun's approach.

"Flora?" It asked, seeing Shaun's panicked look.

Shaun cried, "You've gotta help me! I need to get out of here!"

Then, the Sunflora's eyes went wide with shock. A Ralts that spoke like a human could only mean one thing to the denizens of the Tree of Life. For aeons, Pokemon that inhabited the tree were given protection from the outside world. This, however, came at a cost. Mew was infamous for her playtime, and what was mere play to her was terrifying for them. Recently, no one had to fear becoming one of her playmates, as she had become enamored with a talking Ralts. Word of this spread through the tree quite quickly.

This Ralts, standing before Sunflora now, was the one thing keeping Mew away. And it was asking to be let free. Were that to happen, Mew would surely fly into a state of rage. Terrified by this thought, Sunflora quickly ingrained itself into the ground and shut its leaves to hide its face. It didn't want to be seen anywhere near the Ralts.

Shaun's face fell. "H-hey!" He cried. Growling, Shaun ran to a nearby tree where a Swellow was perched, nesting for the night. Curling his hands into a circle around his mouth, he called up to it. "Hey, Swellow!" If there was anything good that came from his time with his father's 'exploits,' it would be that he had the chance to learn the names of so many Pokemon.

The Swellow's eyes slowly opened at the call of its name. It leaned over lazily, turning down to look down at Shaun with hazy vision. Shaun said, "You're a Flying-Type! Please, could you take me down to the bottom?"

It rubbed its eyes with its wings, nodding without thinking much of it. When it removed the wing and saw Shaun, it squawked in fright and flew away.

"Wait!" Shaun tried to call after it, but whether it heard him or not, it still kept flying.

Now he was becoming desperate. The dread that hung over him was becoming worse. At any moment, Mew could reappear and he could become like those people he saw. He quickly ran to the next Pokemon, a Teddiursa, and asked if it knew a way out. It looked at him curiously before a fearful Ursaring came and swept up its child before running away. He went to any Pokemon he could find, and yet, the result was the same every time. His efforts eventually alerted the other Pokemon he never got to, and before long, the entire valley that appeared filled with life mere minutes earlier, was now empty and quiet.

Shaun looked around hopelessly for anyone else. But there was no one. No matter where he looked, no matter how much he called out for someone to help him, there was no one. He was abandoned, and it was only a matter of time before he was found. It also occurred to him that his calls might attract her, so he quickly slapped a hand over his mouth to silence himself. There was nothing here for him. So, he began to run again.

He fled back into the tunnel from where he came. Through the tunnels, he ran as fast as his tiny legs could take him. At every moment, he imagined Mew following behind him with those horrible red eyes. She looked like a demon there. Perhaps she was, if she was willing to torment and kill all those people. Even as his legs began to burn from the effort of running so fast, that burn felt paltry compared to what those people went through before they were reduced to dust.

This speed soon caused him to trip just as he was making a turn and he tumbled down into a deep hole. Emerald green waves lined the walls. Bubbles larger than even himself gently floated upward. Due to his light weight, he slid off them, tumbling further and further down. It might have been beautiful in other circumstances, but right now, he was scared out of his mind. The chasm swallowed his screams of terror until, eventually, he caught hold of one of the bubbles.

He turned his gaze side to side, looking around the green tunnel for anything he could use to escape. He saw a slope and reached for it, but missed. "No!" He cried. Summoning what little courage he had left, he jumped from the bubble and collapsed face first onto the slope with a sickening thud.

A weak wheeze flew from the young Ralts as he pulled his head up. He wiped away the tears of pain. Even sniffling caused him pain. He managed to drag himself up to his feet, whimpering at the pain as he limped out of the chasm. He found himself in another bronze tunnel. This one had no crystals, and yet, there was light. Shaun wondered how that could be. He looked toward it, squinting his eyes. It seemed far. Still, it was the best lead he had.

Shaun began to limp toward it, slowly moving down the dark hall. The light at its end became brighter as he neared. He stopped suddenly as a chill ran up his arm. He felt wind. Fear gave way to hope. He wondered if, after everything, he was finally at an exit. It was only when the light dimmed and he could see what lied beyond it did he realize where he was.

Visions of his father screaming at him flashed in his eyes, and he could hear the horrible noise of Salomon being fried. Shaun had found himself an escape route, but it was the same that his father had found. He clutched at his head, shaking it to try to rid him of it. "Get...out!" He cried at the visions. "Go away! I'm almost…"

"There you are!"

Shaun froze in his tracks.

Mew chuckled. "You're way better at hide and seek than I gave you credit for, buddy! I never expected you to get this far down. Where the heck were you even going?" She looked past him, and her smile soon faded. "...Shaun," She addressed, looking down at him, "Where exactly were you going?"

She received no reply from Shaun, but saw the boy was shuddering.

"I knew it!" Mew exploded, teleporting in front of him to cut him off. She jammed a finger down at him accusingly. "What in the world are you thinking?!" When Mew looked him up and down and saw the number of scratches and bruises he endured, she sighed and said, "Look at you, you little idiot. Did you bust your head on the way down here and forget our promise, or do promises just mean nothing these days?!"

Shaun slowly backed away from her. In response, Mew eyed the tunnel behind him. A flash in her eyes appeared, making a pink wall appear to block him. She held her hand back to the tree's exit and created another one.

She asked him, "What made you think this was a good idea? Actually, forget it." Her eyes gleamed red once more, and Shaun yelped, seeing the same face of hers from before with those horrible eyes that peered into his soul. They felt even more crushing in person. "You broke your end of our promise, so I think I'll just see for myself what sparked this."

Shaun realized she meant to force herself into his memories. It wasn't likely that she'd stop just at what he saw in that cave. She would see everything. She would peer into each and every last memory of his until she knew more about him than even he would. That thought terrified him more than anything else, but that fear gave him the courage to try to stop it.

"It was you!" He cried.

Mew's face wrinkled. "Excuse me?"

Shaun pointed at her accusingly and yelled, "I saw what you did! I saw you kill those people, just like you killed my dad!"

Rolling her eyes, Mew asked, "What in the world are you talking about now?"

"Those explorers!" He cried. "They didn't do anything wrong, but you killed them all anyways! You didn't kill my dad because he was evil! You killed him just because he was here!" Mew, not knowing what he was babbling about, tried to respond, but he beat her to the punch. "And I saw what you did to those people in armor! You burned them all! My dad was a monster, but you're worse!"

Mew's face soured at that. "Why you-!"

But Shaun was not yet finished. In his mind, he was already dead. He had broken his promise with Mew and would surely pay for it if what he saw was any indication. All he wanted to do now was get his word out before he met their same fate.

"You're going to kill me now too, aren't you?!" Roared Shaun. "That's what those pink things are for, aren't they?! I saw what they did to my dad's friend!"

"That's not-" Mew tried to retort.

Shaun interjected with, "You were already planning on it, weren't you?! As soon as you were bored with me, you'd throw me away like a broken toy! I bet you'd even kill your own children!"

"You little-!" Seethed Mew. She swept him up with Psychic, holding him still and finally making him go silent again with fear. "You don't-! I should-!" She tried to refute him, but there was something about his last claim that made her so unreasonably angry that she couldn't even form a proper response. Being unable to deny it only made her even angrier, and that vicious cycle sent her emotions swirling around in her mind like a raging storm.

Eventually, she couldn't take it anymore and teleported Shaun away to his 'time-out' room. The dark one with no exits. With him out of her sight, she threw her head back and let out a long mixture of a groan and a sigh. "...That little jerk," She said to herself. "What does that kid think he knows?"

Then she decided. Shaun had already broken his end of the deal, just as Arceus had with their age-old promise, so what was the point anymore? She'd read his mind to at least find out what set him off and figure it out from there.

Closing her eyes, she pinpointed his location and got to work. Even if Shaun had fully developed the Psychic powers of a Ralts, it wouldn't have mattered. Shaun never even knew she had gotten what she wanted from him, only due to her resisting the urge to make the process a little uncomfortable for him.

"...Of course he found the time flowers," She said mirthfully. "Those ones were always finicky. No wonder he got the wrong idea. He doesn't know the full story, and I didn't even attack those explorers! That was the tree! Well, there was that one guy, I guess...but he deserved it!"

It occurred to her that she was saying all of this to nobody and she felt ridiculous. She put a hand to her head and shook it, groaning. "Oh, what am I doing…?" She huffed, looking up to a corner of the tunnel as if it wasn't there, seeing right to where the gathering of time flowers were. "...Those flowers are dangerous. I'll let Shaun off with a warning once I've wiped away his memories of those things. Then, it'll all go back to normal."

A pink glow briefly enveloped her, warping her away. She reappeared in the room with the flowers and leered down at them. When she saw two of them knocked out of place, her head shook in disdain. "Actually…" Mew held her arms out at her sides. At the tips of her fingers, spirals of orange energy manifested, growing into two large Hyper Beams. "...Maybe I should take the liberty of destroying these so nothing like this can happen again!"

She brought her arms together, merging the two orbs, and aimed them down. "Once they're gone, Shaun and I can just...start all over. I'll make sure he never sees anything like this again!" Mew brought her shoulders in and braced for fire. She hesitated when she saw a white, formless wisp flutter by. "...What is…?"

The longer she stared at it, the more it unnerved her. Nothing like this existed within the tree. Not in the billions of years she spent within it had she ever seen anything like it. Its ivory glow was dim, yet seemed deeper than the darkest abysses she knew. Frozen stiff, she was helpless to watch as the wisp fluttered toward the gigantic time flower at the room's center. And just before it touched one of the petals, Mew could have sworn she heard a voice speak.

"DO NOT BE HASTY...MEW…"

Then, it made contact with the crystalline petal, and Mew recoiled as the world around her was enveloped with prismatic light.

When that light faded, Mew found herself on a barren, blackened landscape. Above her, something dark and metallic covered the entire sky. She looked around, the feeling of unease she felt near the wisp now gone, and asked, "Where is this place? Is this a vision from one of the time flowers?"

Mew scoffed, looking elsewhere. "I don't have time for this nonsense!" She snapped her fingers, attempting to end the vision. Yet, there was no response. "...What?" She snapped again with the same result. Again and again, she tried to end the vision, and yet, in spite of all the power the mother of all Pokemon possessed, the illusion would not end.

Once more, the feeling of unease returned to her. "Why?!" She cried aloud. "No time flower can do this! Why won't it obey my command?!"

She smashed her fist into the blackened ground in an attempt to simply destroy the flowers and end the vision, yet to her surprise, it felt solid.

"WATCH," Commanded the voice, appearing more vivid this time.

A shiver ran up Mew's spine. Still, she had the nerve to bark back at the voice, "Watch what?! Who do you think you are?!"

There was a loud crash of metal, followed by screams. Mew whipped around and saw Heatran. A black fist had been plunged into its mouth. Then she saw the other Legends, more plentiful than they had been recently. They raced toward Heatran, but weren't quick enough. Mew watched in disbelief as Heatran was obliterated before her very eyes.

She staggered backwards as if she'd been struck, but shook her head in denial. "...What the heck is this trash?!" She demanded from the voice irritably. "Let me out of here! Do you really expect me to watch some illusion? !"

There was no response.

Mew's response was to dismissively scoff, turning away. Indignantly, she sat down and crossed her arms, shouting, "Well, I can wait all day, pal! You can't keep me here forever!"

She yelped when Rayquaza's body smashed into the ground near her. The ground heaved upon his impact, sending her skyward for a moment. And when she caught herself, she was met, face to face, with the black demon himself. Simply looking upon him filled Mew with a dread she'd never known. Hidden away in the sanctity of the Tree of Life, Mew had never seen the scourge before. Now, she understood. One look upon him, and she now knew why Necrozma had brought the world to its knees.

Before she could regain her composure, the other Legends chased after him. And one by one, they were beaten down, and she found herself unable to look away. Deoxys was not among them. Helplessly, she watched, frozen in place, as Necrozma systematically tore the Legends, her children, apart.

The Lake trio were thrown around like dolls by their tails. Victini, thrown into the air and blasted. She audibly gasped when Hoopa's Unbound form was reduced to nothing. All the while, Necrozma laughed.

"It's only a vision," Mew reminded herself. "None of this is real."

But the screams did not stop. Nary a minute went by without Mew hearing the guttural shrieks of agony from the Legends as Necrozma beat them within an inch of their lives. The guardians of Alola stood tall in their titanic forms, yet they were swept away like trash. Mew winced when she heard one of their shells crack.

And then, the Unovan nature trio followed. Mew clasped her hands over her ears and shut her eyes. She was more than eager to be done with whatever this was.

'I bet you'd even kill your own children!'

Those terrible words continued to ring around in her mind again. They bounced around her head, growing louder with each repetition until Mew could no longer hear herself think. Mew tried to shut her ears even tighter as if it would offer any reprieve. It was to no avail, of course. On top of it all, she could still faintly hear the wild laughs of Necrozma.

"Sh-shut up!" She roared. "Enough of this! I'm not just going to sit here and be mocked like this!"

Mew rose back up. The sounds in her mind drove her to the brink of madness, but she kept herself together by telling herself that she could see through this illusion; that it wasn't real. None of it was. It was all garbage keeping her from destroying the time flowers for some reason she couldn't comprehend. She summoned all the power she could muster. Pink spirals of light gathered from all across the scarred battlefield to Mew.

Her power was so unfathomably great that light began to distort around her, yet still, Necrozma and the Legends battled on like it didn't exist. Once the energy stopped, Mew raised her arms and prepared to send out a colossal blast to end this...thing's hold on her. There was nothing more powerful than herself anymore. Arceus was injured and drained. Necrozma, even if he was here now in this illusion, was surely dead. Aura had already left as well. There should be nothing that can trap her.

A pink nova exploded all around her, lasting for only the briefest of moments before disappearing altogether. Mew, wide-eyed, fell to the ground with a thud. "Wh-what?!" She looked down at her own hands as if they were alien to her. "What happened?! Why didn't…?"

Something golden was sent flying above. Hearing the screams that rang out from it, Mew couldn't help but cry out. "Jirachi!" She put a hand to her mouth, surprised at herself.

Mew managed to push herself back to her feet, but suddenly found herself feeling weak. Her attention was pulled skyward. She saw Cresselia in Necrozma's grip for a brief moment, and then, another one of her children were reduced to dust. A dizzy spell struck Mew. She put a hand to her forehead, groaning as her ears began to ring.

The screams returned. Above her, right over her head, she could still hear them ringing out. When one ended, it was soon replaced by another. It was maddening. For some reason, even though Mew knew it was only an illusion, those screams were utterly agonizing to her.

It needed to stop. There was a voice within her head that told her this couldn't go on. She didn't care if it was an illusion. She didn't care if the act was foolish. In spite of those truths, Mew found the strength to fly.

Necrozma hovered over a human Mew didn't recognize. They were in front of a fire. Mew tried to race to them, to put an end to Necrozma, and yet no matter how fast she flew, Necrozma never seemed to get closer.

The demon was impacted by Rayquaza, blowing Mew back as well. She gasped, following them with her eyes. Many other Legends piled onto Necrozma, only to be blown back. Each attack sent ripples and sickening noises through the air.

Mew tried to follow them; to join her children in battle. She hoped against hope that she could do so, no longer thinking of anything else but that. And yet, she could never reach them.

Before her eyes, the travesty that happened next came like a whirlwind. She saw the few of her children that remained being maimed by Necrozma's wicked claws. They were like a vicious cyclone, ending what he so chose and perpetuating the torment of others. Latios and Mesprit fell to them, and their deaths were followed by his laughter.

And then her heart sunk when she saw Kyurem hanging in Necrozma's hand by the throat. She stopped dead in her tracks, allowing her to see things clearly. Though, she would soon regret being able to see what happened next.

Kyurem squirmed in the demon's grasp, letting out panicked, choked gasps. "Kyurem, no!" Cried Mew. After stopping, she suddenly found herself unable to move again, and worse, unable to look away.

There was a loud, sickening series of cracks. Kyurem tensed up, scrambling to free himself. Then, with a pop, the ice dragon went limp. Like trash, he was tossed away by Necrozma, and Mew was subjected to the agonized wailing of Keldeo on top of it.

With a slack jaw, she stared only at Kyurem. Even as Necrozma continued to tear into the others, her eyes were transfixed on his lifeless body. Then, she remembered. She remembered the terrible words he had said to her before her children went off to war and either came back injured, or not at all.

"If you wish to simply sit around in your precious tree like a coward while the rest of us fight, then so be it! But if we survive, I want you to realize the death toll is on your head."

It was then that Mew collapsed, burying her head in her hands. For the first time Mew could remember, the mother of all Pokemon wept. She wept for her children, whom she sent off to war. To die. All because she was too prideful to see any solution to the Necrozma crisis other than her own. She had hidden her grief from even herself under a veil of toys and playtime to escape from the pain of reality. Now, it had hit her with full force. She had killed her children.

Though her eyes were too wet to see it, she felt Zapdos's life be snuffed away next. Her entire body trembled at the sensation. She could not escape it. Though her eyes and ears were shut, the deaths of her children continued to play out in her own mind as if she stared right at them. Zapdos, grappled by the wound she refused to heal, was struck down while trying to flee for its life.

Groudon did something she never expected. The lord of the land acted selflessly. In his last moments, he preached about winning back Arceus's faith. He spoke nothing of her. And while a part of her was saddened to know that, she knew now that she didn't deserve it.

"I'm s-sorry, Groudon," She whimpered, flinching when he too was struck down. Shaking and gripping at her head, she simply shut down. It was too much. Hot tears, ones she'd held back for all of her years, flowed freely. A hiss of pain escaped her when she felt Celebi's life be snuffed out. And then, there was Palkia.

Palkia… The guilt Mew felt was sickening. She felt so nauseous that she might lose her senses altogether. "I...I can't…!" She tried to find words, but they escaped her. Memories of the young Palkia flashed in her mind, as well as the atrocity she nearly committed to get him. How would she ever face Arceus again? Arceus, her partner, whom together they made this world and all its history. It was little wonder he hid the young Palkia from her.

While her mind was on the young one, the old Palkia shattered her train of thought with a soul-crushing wail. Palkia, her child, was crying. And Mew had been nowhere in sight. She had ignored him. She had ignored the deaths of the direct Legends. How many other Pokemon died? How many people? How many...of her children had been slaughtered by this demon because of her selfishness?

Mew couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't take herself anymore. She raised her head, letting out a raging, sorrowful bellow, unaware that Arceus had arrived and was doing the same. But while Arceus was able to focus his anger upon Necrozma, Mew only had herself to blame, and continued to wail like the child she acted like for so long. Shrouded in her despair, she did not notice when the ravaged landscape began to fade, nor when the raging roars of Arceus far above fell silent. Mew only continued to weep for her lost children, hating herself all the while.

"...MY APOLOGIES, MEW."

Her eyes opened wide, finding the world had changed. She was in an endless expanse of white and grey. Flickering symbols flew through the void, appearing and disappearing on a whim. She also noticed that her eyes no longer burned.

There was a grand, resounding footstep that seemed to echo forever. Mew whipped around, finding her breath caught in her throat at what she saw. There in the endless expanse of nothingness, there was a figure of gleaming light that somehow seemed even bigger. Its form, she could not comprehend. Upon seeing it, she felt her emotions dull a bit. Where there was rage and sorrow, there was fatigue, and where her mind was raging at herself, there was now clarity.

"You…!"

Aura, the entity, stared down at her with its faceless, expressionless visage. "IT WAS CRUEL OF ME TO SHOW THOSE VISIONS TO YOU," It said, "HOWEVER, THEY WERE SOMETHING YOU NEEDED TO SEE."

Mew appeared confounded by Aura, still trying to take in the fact she was even seeing it. "I...y-you!"

Though Mew herself did not even understand her own thought process, Aura seemed to. "FIVE MONTHS AGO, I DECIDED NOT TO SPEAK WITH ARCEUS. NOW, I BELIEVE THAT WAS A MISTAKE. SUCH IS THE STORY OF MOST OF MY DECISIONS."

Through the grey veil, Mew could have sworn she saw a white hand approaching her. She took it on instinct, not even thinking about what it was, and was lifted back to her feet. "I SAW THAT YOU WERE IN TURMOIL," Explained Aura, "AND SO, PERHAPS AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT, I CAME TO SEE MY CREATION, AND TO HALT THE RISE OF ANOTHER NECROZMA."

Mew's eyes widened. Mention of the demon's name cleared her head a bit, though it was accompanied by a half-suppressed fear. "Another Necrozma?!"

A noise of affirmation rang through the realm. "INDEED, MEW. IN TIME, ANOTHER NECROZMA WOULD APPEAR. IT WOULD ENSLAVE ALL LIFE ON THIS WORLD FOR ITS BIDDING BEFORE LOOKING TO DO THE SAME ELSEWHERE. AFTER THAT, IT WOULD BEGIN TO DESTROY LIFE FOR ITS OWN AMUSEMENT."

Somehow, Mew could feel the piercing stare of Aura. The pressure it emitted was unfathomable, boggling her mind by just thinking of it. It felt similar to what she sensed when she stared into the eyes of Necrozma.

"I AM REFERRING TO YOU, MEW."

Her head perked up at that, harboring widened eyes. "Wh-what?!" She stammered.

Aura replied, "THE BALANCE OF POWER OF THIS WORLD WAS ONCE KEPT BY TWO. YOU, AND ARCEUS. NOW, ARCEUS IS WEAK. YET YOU ARE JUST AS POWERFUL AS YOU HAVE EVER BEEN. YOUR MIND HAD GROWN UNHINGED AFTER ARCEUS AND THE BOY, SHAUN, BROKE THEIR PROMISES. YOU WOULD HAVE BEGUN TO DO THE SAME, THINKING THAT IF THOSE CLOSE TO YOU WOULD BREAK THEM, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF KEEPING THEM AT ALL?"

Another hand reached down, then retracted itself. "...I WILL SPARE YOU OF FURTHER VISIONS. IT IS CLEAR YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM THE ONES I HAVE ALREADY SHOWN YOU. ALL YOU MUST KNOW IS THAT YOU CAME CLOSE TO TREADING A SIMILAR PATH. BUT, THAT MEANS LITTLE NOW. YOU HAVE SHED TEARS FOR YOUR CREATIONS. I TRUST THAT IS A SIGN. A SIGN THAT I NO LONGER HAVE TO WORRY THAT YOU WOULD BECOME LIKE NECROZMA. AFTER ALL, YOU HAVE NOW SEEN HIM FIRSTHAND."

Floating high, a still-emotional Mew swiped her hands through the veil and claimed, "I will never become like him, that...that…!"

While she struggled to find words hateful enough to describe the lengths of her newfound enmity for the demon, Aura replied, "THAT IS ENOUGH FOR ME."

Mew looked at Aura blankly, her anger fading. The two did nothing, silent for a time as they simply stared at one another. Mew could have sworn that Aura seemed less...vague.

"...THERE IS ANOTHER PURPOSE FOR MY APPEARANCE HERE," Aura eventually said. Mew looked on with interest. "I WAS ONLY ABLE TO APPEAR BEFORE YOU BECAUSE OF THE TREE OF LIFE. IT IS ONE OF TWO TETHERS TO THIS PLANET I NOW HAVE."

Tilting her head at it, Mew asked, "Two?"

Aura replied, "I DID NOT COME HERE WITH MY FULL POWER. MERELY, ENOUGH TO EXPOSE YOU TO THAT VISION. YOU HAD BEEN BLOCKING AWAY YOUR FEELINGS FOR AEONS, MAKING YOU COLD TO THE DEATHS OF YOUR CREATIONS, AS I FEAR I HAVE BEEN TO MINE."

There came a great, rapid trembling. Aura was shuddering. "I CAME TO SAVE…" Aura paused, unsure of what to say next. Mew expected it to say 'creation,' but what it said instead surprised her. "...MY...DAUGHTER."

With a shaky breath, Mew hesitantly asked, "...Wh-what…?"

"FORGIVE ME," Said Aura, "IF THAT IS DISCOMFORTING FOR YOU. YET, I FEAR MY COLDNESS TOWARD MY CREATIONS WAS THE INITIAL CAUSE FOR YOUR OWN. AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT, I DESCENDED UNTO YOUR WORLD TO SAVE YOU FROM YOURSELF. I DID THIS, BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW IF I COULD BRING MYSELF TO BE YOUR END IF YOU DID BECOME LIKE NECROZMA."

Mew shook her head, chuckling. "I...no, I don't mind at all. Seeing that…" Her face fell a bit as flashes of the horrible vision returned to her, making her shiver. "...Was hard. But thinking that I could become that...I'd rather die, honestly."

Though nothing of Aura's form could be identified, Mew somehow knew what she said pleased it. "I AM GLAD THAT IT WILL NOT COME TO THAT. MAY PEACE FIND YOU, MEW. KNOW THAT I CHERISH YOU, AND CHERISH YOUR CREATIONS THE SAME." Suddenly, the infinite expanse of light began to retract from the grey that surrounded it.

A gasp escaped from Mew. She reached toward it, asking, "Are you already leaving?"

"I AM," Answered Aura. "FAREWELL FOR NOW, MEW. I TRUST THAT I AM LEAVING YOUR WORLD, AND THE UNIVERSE, IN CAPABLE HANDS."

Still, Mew protested, reaching out like a child, clinging to their parent. "H-hey, didn't you say you didn't want to be cold? You wanted to talk to Arceus!"

Aura paused for a moment, ceasing movement. "...I DO," It admitted, "YET, I DO NOT WISH TO STAY. ARCEUS ONCE FOUND HIMSELF IN A SITUATION WHERE HE COULD HAVE BECOME LIKE NECROZMA. THERE WERE MANY INSTANCES, ACTUALLY. HE ONLY OVERCAME THEM BECAUSE HE WAS BROUGHT LOW TIME AFTER TIME UNTIL HE SAW REASON. SHOULD THAT MADNESS ENCOMPASS ME, THERE WOULD BE NOTHING THAT COULD STOP IT. I WILL NEVER SET FOOT, WHOLLY AT LEAST, WITHIN THE UNIVERSE AGAIN IN THE MANNER I DID WHEN CONFRONTING NECROZMA. THAT MUCH, I HAVE ALREADY FORESEEN FROM MYSELF."

And then, Aura's light faded. Mew found herself trying to chase Aura to no avail. "YOU DO NOT NEED ME ANYMORE, MEW," Aura told her. "YOU ARE NOT A CHILD. YOU ARE A MOTHER. THEY NEED YOU. BUT, I AM NOT NEEDED BY ANYONE ANYMORE. I HAVE MADE SURE OF THAT TODAY."

Aura, and the realm of grey, disappeared after that. Mew once more found herself in the room filled with Time Flowers. On instinct, she looked to where the white wisp had landed before, and still saw it glimmering. She went to grab it, but it faded before her fingers could touch it. However, it seemed like it left one last gift for her.

In the petal it had touched, she saw images of her first children. She was playing with the young Legends. Before they feared her. Before they hated her. As Mew looked upon her past self, living out her current dream, she realized that she hadn't been truly happy in millions of years. It was then that she felt Aura's comforting numbness fade along with it, and she collapsed, feeling the grief of their loss all over again.

His face adorned with a deep scowl, Shaun sat in the dark room with crossed arms. He had much time to think after being taken here and left alone for so long. Over time, fear turned to anger, but fatigue soon dimmed the scope of his frustrations. He pondered what Mew would do when she came back to get him. Maybe she wouldn't come back at all, and she'd simply leave him here to rot and forget all about him, finding some poor other kid to torment when he was gone.

Fear returned to him when there was a brief pink flash right in front of him. Mew's appearance somehow made his skin go even whiter, which was no mean feat considering he was a Ralts. Shaun winced, attempting to shield himself with his arms. He tensed up when he felt her grab him and closed his eyes tightly.

Then he realized he didn't feel any pain. He tentatively opened his eyes. Mew had grabbed hold of him, but it felt oddly gentle, like whenever she tried to lull him to sleep using the visage of a human mother. Shaun was truly surprised when she saw that, of all things, Mew was actually crying.

"I'm sorry," She whimpered quietly into his chest. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry…"

She continued to repeat this without end between sobbing fits. Shaun looked down at her with wide eyes, genuinely unsure of what to make of it.

Endless Chasm of Space.

A golden ring appeared in a void of naught but darkness, illuminated only by a gargantuan pink nova far in the distance. From the ring, Arceus emerged.

Arceus had decided to check up on his young son before making the final preparations to begin pulling energy from the cosmos once more. After all, it was his domain, and he did not know how the spatial fluctuations would affect the young Palkia when Arceus began the process. That, and he genuinely wanted to see his son again. It had been a long time, and he wanted to know how the young one was doing.

"Palkia!" Called Arceus. His voice echoed out into the darkness, causing hordes of Unown to scatter in response. He waited a moment, expecting to see a dark pink bubble to appear before him. He was sure that the young Legend would be eager to show off his newfound prowess to his father. Yet, there was no response.

Looking around the void, Arceus wondered what Palkia was up to. "Palkia?" He called once more. "Where are you?"

Still, there was nothing but the chittering of Unown. Now Arceus was getting worried. Closing his eyes, he sent out a golden pulse throughout as much of the void as he could reach in his weakened state. Yet, all he sensed were Unown, and fragments of spatial energy. "...No," He muttered, shaking his head. "No, no, that can't be right!"

Arceus's eyes gleamed red, summoning forth another ring. Dialga was pulled through, and his appearance alone caused a tremor to ring through the spatial rift they were in. He seemed surprised at the sudden summons.

"F-father!" He addressed. "What is the matter?"

The look on Arceus's face made Dialga recoil. It was like he was looking at the spitting image of how his father used to be. "Palkia!" Roared a panicked Arceus. "He is gone! Where has he gone?!"

Dialga flinched. "I-I do not know!" He cried. "I was unaware that he was missing!"

Arceus stared at him for a moment with his horrifying, crimson eyes. But when he saw the terror on Dialga's face, he looked away and closed them. He took in a shaky breath. When he opened his eyes again, their devilish glow was gone.

"...I apologise greatly," Said Arceus, "For speaking to you like that. You did not deserve it."

Still startled, Dialga quickly nodded along. "It is...no concern, father. More importantly, what is this about Palkia? Have his powers grown so much that he was able to escape on his own?"

Shaking his head, Arceus replied, "I do not know. All I know is that he is not here. I sensed for his presence and found nothing. Please, try to find him."

Dialga nodded without hesitation, turning back to the ring. "I will do everything in my power to find young Palkia. He would never venture far from our world." With that, he flew through. The ring closed behind him and disappeared, leaving Arceus alone once more.

Arceus stared off into the pink nova unblinking. He noticed a black, smoggy cloud floating across it. "...Giratina," He growled. "If your foolishness has extended to influence Palkia…" Unbeknownst to even him, the glow in his eyes returned, accompanied by his old rage. "...You will regret it."

Author's Note

Pokextinction Fact of the Day: If Mew had gone to fight Necrozma, she could have single-handedly held off Necrozma until Arceus arrived, allowing the Legends to focus on aiding everyone else and resulting in minimal casualties. This fact has been said before, but there is something else that has not been mentioned. Yes, Mew could have held off Necrozma, but she would no doubt have been tremendously damaged in the process. Most likely not to death, but severe, crippling injuries like Arceus sustained. What are the consequences of this? That remains to be seen...for now.

The Creator- We managed to make it within the two-week bracket from the last update luckily. Though, it was by a hair. It's ironic. As soon as Mew's outward rage subsides, Arceus's comes crawling back.

Hydra- Now you guys finally understand why Mew was acting the way she was. Hopefully she's finally learned that life isn't all sunshine and rainbows and she works to fix all of her broken relationships with her children.

Anonymous- The void growing in Lugia turns him into Shadow Lugia! Please Update!

The Creator- It's possible, but I think the idea of Lugia acting like Shadow Lugia while retaining his normal look is scarier. At least in the context of this fic. Shadow Lugia's design definitely looks scarier than his normal one.

Hydra- Now that would be something. Imagine if Lugia's rage got the better of him and he just started attacking anything or anyone who stood in his way regardless if they were friend or foe.

DarkPugLord23- The return of Mew! I practically fell off my chair in laughter when Giratina and the other legends essentially pulled a "Oh hell no, I'm outta here," when she turned up. Just the mental image of these big, powerful beast machines getting scared of a small pink space cat is enough to crack a smile, but considering what she did in the past, I can't blame them. If Mew's back, then it can only stand to reason that she'll be rather prominent in the next chapter. Also, nice to see a bit of calm during the hospital bit; Ash and Serena really need to get some rest after they've all been through, though I'll admit, I'm a little nervous about what you mean by 'most will eventually recover'. And of course, Team Rocket possessing the intelligence of a box of rocks, while simultaneously being as stubborn as an ox. Can't get enough of that, I'll tell you. I admire their tenacity though, even if they're the bad guys.

The Creator- At this point, the Legends know Mew for the monster Arceus used to be. And man, you are good at predicting stuff. As for Ash and Serena, the last thing they're going to get is rest. They're going to need much more training if they're going to stop their Pokemon from suffering injuries like that again. Maybe they'll have an easier job since Team Rocket doesn't seem to be as dangerous as the Nova Branch. ...Maybe not. Who knows what they have in store?

Hydra- Oh how right you were in your prediction about Mew. She finally realized how awful of a mother she'd been for millions of years and she's gonna do her best to fix all her relationships. Lets just hope they're forgiving otherwise she's in for a long painful existence.

G- Good chapter, so now the Legendaries, Ash and Mr Star are celebrating the falling of the Nova Branch, well from a certain perspective, this could raise the morale of everybody, as now they eliminated one of their most formidable enemies, making it easy to re-establishes the original order in the world. Though the reckless actions of Lugia to kill Christopher Lee in Cold blood was counterproductive, as he eliminated their only hint to find Giovanni, the big boss of all this and the master mind of this organization.

Nevertheless, you're right about the situation of Lugia, i think that i overreacted to thinks that Lugia would receive a harsh scolding for killing Christopher Lee, as to analyzed the current situation of the Legendary pokemon, the last thing that Arceus wants is weakens more them, as many Legendary pokemon perished during the conflict with Necrozma, adding that some of the survivors suffered notables and permanent injuries that affected their combat capabilities, and even more to considers the recent events to the seige of the island, in that some Legendaries, particularly Moltres and Reshiram suffered notables injuries that possibly could affects their capabilities in some circumstances, like that now Moltres could has difficulties to walks or stand with its legs, and Reshiram could suffered some damages to the nerves of her neck, affecting her capability to moves her neck and as result, her capability to moves her head to attack. Meaning that Arceus wouldn't wants to promotes discords and quarrels between the remaining legendaries and divides them even more, adding that Lugia is regretted for his actions, showing that at least he can takes accountability of his mistakes, showing that he still worthy to be part of this council.

As other point, i really like to see the notable character development of Giratina, because he started in the story like a stereotype of rebel and neglected son that talks with a rude attitude and is disrespectful toward his parents and brothers. But after the events of Necrozma, Giratina started to shows a more mature personality in that he takes more seriously the current situation of his family, and even shows a more wise attitude to takes the control of the situation, even showing certain level of leadership. Well, i guess that the traumatic events with Necrozma, made that Giratina changed notably, as this events gave him a reality check about the harsh situation, adding the demise of many legendaries, Giratina begin to see the world with new eyes, and start to behaves more mature, much like a big brother acts with his little brothers when they have some difficulty, like lost their parents.

And talking about difficulties, to considers that Mewtwo is still synchronized with the tree of beginning, i wonder if this could means that the next important battle could takes place in this tree, as perhaps the Team rocket could wants to returns to the favor to the Legendary pokemon for destroyed the Nova branch, and now they would destroyed one of their most important bases; the tree of beginning, and with Mewtwo could be easy to sieges this place. Adding that could be interesting to see more involvement of Mew in the story, as she always avoided the most important conflicts in the story, until now, making interesting that Mew has to faces a conflict eventually.

To finishes, so the Team rocket and possibly remnants of the Nova branch were taking the Giant Chasm, well i wonder if this could implies that the Team rocket could tries to takes over the former territories of the deceased legendaries, like the Milos island, the former territory of Tornadus, Thundurus and Landorus, as maybe they could tries to gain advantages against the Legendary pokemon, adding that perhaps they tries to get some of their relics to get more power to conquest the world and the remaining legendary pokemon.

PS. I am the Guest that writes long commentaries, but now i chose a more formal name; G

Keep the good job.

Also, regarding to your point about the "Poke wars", i was thinking in the saga:

1. Poke wars episode 1, The Ultra-Menace.

2. Poke wars episode 2, The Attack of the Nova Branch.

3. Poke wars episode 3, The Revenge of the Team Rocket.

4. Poke wars episode 4, A New Hope.

5. Poke wars episode 5, The Team Rocket Strikes Back.

6. Poke wars episode 6, The Return of the Chosen One.

Mr Star: "Are you threatening me, Master Vulture?"

British-Vulture: "The Pokextinction will chooses your fate"

Mr Star: "I am the Pokextinction"

British-Vulture: "Not yet"

Mr Star: "Its Treason then"

(And suddenly Mr Star takes a red lightsaber and prepares to fight)

The Creator- Rocking that new name, G. I also really like seeing guests interact like this.

I'm really glad you noticed the development of Giratina. Originally, he just wanted to lash out at everything and everyone because he was so angry, but then he saw his brother murdered right before his eyes. Something sparked within him, but to say he's no longer a threat is perhaps too hasty. He's a schemer for sure, but to what end?

Interesting stuff about the Tree you said. Keep it up!

Hydra- You are right in your assumption about Mew wanting to become more involved. She now has a very similar personality to Arceus in that she wants to reconnect with all her children, Legendary or not and finally be more involved in their lives. As you saw she deeply regrets not helping her children fight Necrozma and she now blames herself for all the deaths that occured at his hand. But now that she is finally maturing and wanting to help the others well... Team Rocket might have their hands full.

British-Vulture- Mr Star! On the orders of the Pokéxtinction Writers, you are under arrest for being a simp to Mew! (NOTE: This is a joke.)

This chapter is a very nice breather after the clusterfuck of the last few. Don't get me wrong, I love action, but you ended it at the right time before it started to overstay its welcome. In short, you avoided Arc Fatigue. Nice to see that Keldeo is gonna kick some ass. I'm no expert, but I don't think that the Grunts in the Chasm have Nova Branch with them. Giratina being uncomfortable with Arceus praising him is a nice touch. Mew is planning something, as she always is, and Ash and Serena are giving a shit about their Pokémon (LOOKING AT YOU, ANIME PAUL, YOU DICK).

Prediction Time!: This time, we are moving away from Galar and looking more at the other legends. So, as Genesect is yet to make a proper appearance to everyone yet and Zeraora is still rogue, they may end up becoming a duo. Giratina is definitely going to have an internal conflict, not being able to come to terms with the idea that Arceus is no longer an abusive father. Regigigas has yet to make a proper appearance, so I can't predict much there. Tobias and Poipole is either gonna stir up some trouble with some people when they are found out (with others supporting them), or almost everyone is gonna hate Poipole except for Ash and Serena, etc.

Either way, fucking brilliant, keep up the good work!

The Creator- G seems to have responded to your review, haha. We were actually going to go straight into this chapter after the island raid ended, but I was reading conversations between other fanfic writers and I noticed one of them talking about action fatigue, so I decided to make a break chapter instead. Genesect and Zeraora becoming a duo sounds pretty cool. But I wonder where those two would even meet. Perhaps...near their common goal? And oh, do we have a plan for Poipole. It hasn't appeared much since it's weak and tiny. On top of that, it would cause people to freak out, and for trainers to try hunting it down. But it will be relevant. Thanks for the kind words.

Hydra- I really love the whole dynamic between Arceus and Giratina mainly because all Giratina would need to do for there to be so much less tension among the legends is forgive his father, but he's not willing to do so. We really wanted to give the reader time to process what had happened in the previous 3 chapters so that's mainly why we decided to have a breather chapter.

Hall Gowrt- Almost deleted this review,

I am a bad reader... I have skipped some chapters... read some to the fullest

Can I get a brief description of the main characters external features and clothes I suppose!

Coz imagining them like the anime ones feels soo wrong for this journey!

You can ignore it as well... can I call this story a constant? Thanx a lot... I happy that school for you guys has started

Gonna be a year soon, rotting at home... AhCollege campus life

like u have noticed, delusional kid... thats likes this story

The Creator- I honestly had no idea you were even still reading. It's great to see you again. I don't mind if you skip some chapters. Some people read stories differently. You might miss some important stuff though, but you don't have to worry about it. Ash and Serena look pretty much the same as they did by the end of Pokemon XYZ, if a bit taller and more grizzled from battle.

I actually hadn't thought much of their designs actually. If I had to guess, I'd say that Serena ditched that skirt of hers after Arc 1 for gym shorts for easier movement since there aren't really any pageants to participate in anymore. No idea what you mean by constant, but if you want to, you can call it whatever you want.

Really glad to hear you like our story. Cheers.

Hydra- My man it is good to see you again. I think the last time you reviewed was all the way back in chapter 10 so it's awesome to hear you've stuck with us this whole time! As for your question, yes this story would be considered a constant mainly because it's always moving forwards and never backwards except with an occasional flashback as you saw in this chapter with Mew's children. And we both know how you feel when it comes to college bro, I'm taking 5 classes this semester so I definitely have to organize my weeks otherwise I'd never get any work done.

SilverWolf1130- What Lugia killed could've just been a hologram with the helicopter on autopilot or someone wearing some kind of hologram projector to look like Lee. Perhaps Lee wants the Legendaries to focus on Giovanni and take out someone who could pose a threat to his plans while he hides in the shadows and plans his next move...

Also, considering how he basically spat in the face of the Legendaries (literally) and has shown how much he despises them, it just seems like he'd rather have his limbs torn off slowly than give the Legendaries the satisfaction of seeing him beg for mercy. So his death was reeeeeal suspicious.

But going back to this chapter, once again, I wanna punch Mew in the face, honestly. If there's a Legendary I hope gets killed, it would be Mew. (Which upsets me cause Mew is one of my favorite Pokémon) sorry. Just my thoughts.

Also glad Reshiram is safe. Was worried she was gonna get killed last chapter or get crippled (Like losing her tail)

The Creator- Lee merely being a hologram is always a possibility. A guy like that can't ever be predicted. But it's also possible that he really was at the island simply because...where else would he go? It's the Nova Branch HQ, right? He could have also wanted to see the deaths of the Legends firsthand instead of through the eyes of a hologram, but just didn't expect Giratina to get involved. Pride comes before a fall, eh? Or you could be right. Who knows?

Do you still wanna punch Mew in the face?

I don't have the heart to make Reshiram lose her tail. It's probably her most important body part. I'd have just killed her instead. If you're going to be an evil writer, best to go all the way, right?

Hydra- To be honest I laughed so hard when I read the second part of the review XD. Anyways hopefully this chapter changed your perception of her. She's definitely made mistakes just like Arceus, but I think what'll matter most is how she handles those mistakes. P.S. if you couldn't tell Mew is my favorite legendary so I know how you felt in regards to how she acted, but hopefully you'll start to like her after reading this chapter!

The Creator- Next time on Pokextinction, it seems like quite some time has passed. Has Keldeo defeated Team Rocket, or have they defeated him? What will Ash and Serena's teams be like, and can Hydreigon and Pangoro even still fight?

Hydra- Another page, another chapter! That does it for this one folks! Mew is finally starting to see the error of her ways, but it's gonna be a long road till anyone even considers forgiving her. Hopefully she realizes soon that while she can talk all she wants it'll be through actions that really start to change the legends feelings toward their mother. Alright guys that's all for today and hopefully we see you on the next one, thank you to everyone that reviewed! P.S. I can't wait to see who gets to be the 200th review hehe.
