"You guys have no idea what you missed out on yesterday." Jay started anxiously talking as soon as he saw Adam and Kev sitting behind their desks.

"Get over it Halstead." Hailey growled at him.

"I will not. Only because I think it was such a badass moment." The woman in the room rolled her eyes at him while the other two were still trying to figure out what Jay was talking about.

"Out with it, Halstead." Kevin demanded.

"We ran into your girl last night." Jay began to explain as he looked at Adam, who furrowed his brows a little before replying.

"Kim?"

"Yes Kim. Who else?" Jay sounded super excited, Adam was getting a bit worried and Kevin was amused by the whole situation.

"What… ha… ppened?" Adam spaced his words while he looked back and forth between Jay and Hailey.

"Nothing happened. Jay is exaggerating." Hailey said while she was catching up on her emails.

"I'm not. Hailey walked over to apologize."

"Is that so, Detective Upton?" Kevin asked in disbelief. Hailey wasn't very fond of admitting when she had messed up, so this was huge. Upton just looked at Kevin and rolled her eyes.

"And Kim totally held up her own. You know how this beauty usually intimidates the hell out of people, including me sometimes?" Both men nodded. "Well, Kim did not back down. It was quite a moment."

"Shut up Jay." Hailey wasn't mad at all, she was kind of playing along with her man, but the truth was that she never expected yesterday's conversation to end the way it did, it was usually her with the last word and she loved the fact that she was standing in front of another strong and powerful woman.

"And…" Jay added, waiting for Hailey to say what she told him she would.

"And nothing." Hailey looked at Adam and smiled. "She's great. I like her."

"She is great." He smiled back and tapped his chin with the pen he was fiddling with.

He patiently waited until he knew she was free. He picked up his phone and just called.

"Hey! What's up?" Her voice sounded fresh and hyped from the other side of the line.

"Nothing much really, just leaving a crime scene."

"Uhhh. At least you have something to keep you entertained."

"True, but I would much rather have a hockey game or something else to entertain me."

"I'm sure. Anything I can do for you, detective?" He chuckled at that question. He could think of a million things she could do for him, not exactly PG rated.

"I'm just a little bit jealous." Kim had no idea where this was coming from.

"Why?"

"Because Jay and Hailey got to see you last night and I didn't." Kim laughed quietly as she leaned on one of the windows of the faculty room.

"Oh, that. Yeah, I ran into them last night and it was disappointing not to see you there."

"How was it?"

"Hmmm, something tells me that you already know exactly how it was."

"Well, I don't know your side of the story."

"It was good. I think it was really sweet of her to come over."

"Yeah, it was a nice thing to do. Maybe we could all hang out again, and you two can get to know each other a bit more. Would that be pushing too much?"

Adam was incredibly sweet, the way he really considered all her needs made her feel so confident and at ease.

"Not at all, sounds fun."

"Good. Listen I gotta go, my Sarge is calling. The day is picking up speed, so I might need you to take Gracie. Pops has a late shift today."

"No problem, just let me know. Be safe, ok?"

"Always am."

The day ended up just like he predicted. The unit had to raid a stash house and there was no way Adam could get out of that early. He texted Kim and called later to speak to Grace.

"Hey muffin, how was school?"

"It was great! We read a story and drew the characters."

"That sounds like fun. Listen, grandpa Bob and I have to work late today. So you and Ms. B get to spend the rest of the day together, ok?"

"Ok. It will be fun!"

"Yeah! Definitely. I love you muffin, I'll pick you up tonight."

"I love you too, uncle Adam. Go save the world." Adam laughed. Gracie had that, she would throw random comments that could crack you up and brighten your day in a second.

"I'll do my best. Can you put Ms. B on the phone?"

"Yes. I love you. See you later."

"See you tonight pumpkin."

Grace handed the phone to Kim and started to pick some storybooks to take.

"Thanks for this Kim. You have Trudy's number from last time, right?"

"I do. Don't worry about it, we'll be fine. You just concentrate on saving the word." She said as she looked down at a smiling Grace.

"I have to go."

"See you tonight."

"I'll text you as soon as I'm back." He hung up before she got to say anything else, he was clearly in a rush. Before putting her phone away she typed something and hit send.

Be safe

X

Gracie was overly excited to spend the day with Kim. Before going to her place both girls went to do some shopping. Although Kim knew that she was going to be playing this role often, she hadn't had the time to pick up some things that she wanted to have for Grace at her place. The little girl had a blast choosing some essentials for her.

They had a lot of fun, they played, Gracie helped with dinner and they even got her lunchbox ready for the next day. Adam was doing a great job with his niece, but healthy and nutritious lunches were not really his specialty.

Both girls were having dessert, fruit salad, on the couch while Gracie got some minutes of tv before getting ready for bed.

Kim was a bit nervous looking at her phone, but news about Adam were nowhere to be seen. She knew he was working really hard for Gracie to comply with her bedtime, so she decided to arrange her guest bedroom for Grace just in case she needed to get her to bed while they waited for her uncle.

When they were shopping Kim asked Grace to pick a few cushions to give the guest room a little more personality, and the little girl was thrilled.

Gracie was eating her fruit and just asked out of nowhere.

"Is uncle Adam your boyfriend? Like daddy is mommy's boyfriend?" Kim was biting on a piece of apple when she felt she was about to choke on that question. What was she supposed to answer? I mean he was definitely not her boyfriend, but it is not like they were just friends. Well, at least she didn't see him as just a friend. She wasn't sure if she ever really saw him as just that.

"Um, no Gracie, he's not."

"He should."

"Why?" Kim really wanted to know the girl's opinion on this.

"I think he likes you."

"Well, we get along great. He's fun to be around, and I like to think I'm fun to be around, too." She nudged the little girl making her giggle.

"You are." She said smiling. "But I don't mean that." Kim opened her eyes wide and waited for a creative answer from Grace. "I mean like prince Adam likes princess Belle."

"Oh." Kim never expected that, even less the question that followed that.

"Do you think he's handsome?" Where the fuck did this question come from considering a six year old was asking it.

"Hmmm. I'm not going to answer that little Miss Ruzek." She said with a smile and tickled her side.

"So, you think he's ugly?" Kim couldn't help but laugh at that, throwing her head back and everything.

"I didn't say that."

"So you think he's handsome." This little girl had her own hidden agenda.

"Well, your uncle is a good looking man." More like a Greek god sculpted by Zeus himself, but Kim was not going to get into those details with Grace.

"He should be your boyfriend then."

"Gracie, we're just friends, ok?"

"Ok." She agreed but was a little bummed by the answers she got, Gracie was expecting something else.

"Now, how about you go brush your teeth and then I'll read you a story before going to bed?"

"Can I pick the book?"

"Of course you can, bear." Gracie put her bowl on the coffee table and threw herself in Kim's arms.

"Thanks for taking care of me. I had a lot of fun!"

Kim returned the hug and kissed the top of her head.

"Aw, you don't have to thank me for that. I like spending time with you and I had fun too! Let's go brush those teeth."

After a story and some snuggles Gracie finally fell asleep. Kim didn't know what to do. She thought about going to bed, but didn't like the idea of Adam calling her and missing the call. She really should have talked to him and asked how his crazy schedule works and how she should be working around that. The truth is she was also worried about him. She wanted to be there to know that he had made it back alright and that to see him one more time. That is something she doesn't take for granted anymore.

So she decided to wait, put something to watch on Netflix and got her phone to order some food, but was relieved when she saw his name flashing on the screen.

"Hey, how was it?" She asked.

"Exhausting, but good. We got the guys."

"Saving Chicago one bad guy at a time." He scoffed at her comment.

"I guess you could say that." He sounded extremely tired and she picked that up in no time. "Listen, I'll take a quick shower, get changed and drive over there to get Grace."

"Adam, she's asleep. Don't you want to call it a night, rest and pick her up tomorrow?"

"Thanks for the offer, but it's too much to ask for."

"It's not."

"You're too kind. But I still want to see her." He stopped for a second and ruffled his own hair. "And you. So if it's not too late, I'd really like to stop by."

"Hurry. I wanna see you too."

Kim was settled on the couch watching the show she was currently hung up on and warm food was placed in front of her.

Her phone lit up telling her she had a new message.

Door

She stood up and went to get it.

"Hi. I didn't want to make any noise and risk waking Grace up."

"Good call." She wrapped her arms around him and hid her face in the place his neck and shoulders meet. "It's nice to see you."

"It's nice to see you, too." He looked for her face with his hands and once he took a hold of it, he kissed her softly and found the comfort, peace and strength he didn't know needed. "How was Gracie?"

"Great, like always. Come, I'll walk you to the guest bedroom." She took his hand in hers and lightly pulled him inside, closing the door behind them. "She's over there." She walked him to the bedroom door and left him to give them some privacy.

After a while he was back in the living room.

"She's so peaceful when she sleeps."

"Yeah, sleeping children are the best. So, are you taking her or letting her sleep?"

"I think I'm taking her. I still have to fix her lunch and all of that." He talked and walked around the couch to sit next to Kim.

"Detective? Who do you think you're talking to? Lunch for little Miss Ruzek is already taken care of. In fact I hope you're hungry because I ordered us some burgers." She said with a smile looking at the brown paper bag in front of her.

"You are the fucking best."

"I know." She closed her eyes and smiled triumphantly. "I wasn't sure about what to get for you, so I just got you my favorite burger."

"And that is?"

"A CBH." He looked at her a bit confused as she was getting the boxes out of the bags. "Cheddar, bacon and honey."

"Honey?"

"Yes. Honey." He scrunched his nose and furrowed his brows. "Stop judging and just eat it. You'll like it." Kim handed him a box and just stared, waiting for him to take a bite. He finally did under her careful watch.

"You're right. It works, it's really good."

"Told ya!" She said like one of her little kids making him laugh.

"You're adorable." He said absentmindedly and kept eating his food, causing a few seconds of silence between them. Adam observed her carefully and smiled when her cheeks began to get that rosy red color he adored to see. He took his eyes away from her and concentrated on his burger again. "What are you watching?" He was still smiling, he loved spending time with her and he loved the nervousness he caused her, it had to be good. Right?

"Money Heist."

"I've heard about it."

"Heard? You haven't seen it? It's kind of like a cop show!" She said shocked.

"Isn't it about some guys trying to steal some money or something?"

"Yeah, and they are the best."

"How is that a cop show?" He was laughing again.

"Well, it's like a cop show in reverse." She said laughing too. "Ok, fine. It's not a cop show. You actually end up wanting the professor's recruits to get away with it."

"I bet I would be on the cops' side."

"I bet you would not." She said moving to sit over her legs and shifting a little closer to him.

"What's in it if I win?" He asked with a lopsided grin after biting into one of the French fries that came with the burger.

"What do you want?" They were both getting their flirt game on.

"That's a very open question," He smiled seductively. "but I'll keep it simple. If I win, I want a date."

"We've gone out already."

"I know. I'm talking about a real date, drinks, dinner, everything."

"Ok. And what's in it for me if you lose?"

"I'll take Bugs the bunny every time there's no volunteers to take him home." They both laughed until Kim extended her hand out to him and they shook on their bet. Adam tugged on her hand and pulled her towards him, she fell on his chest not even trying to use her hands to avoid that. She felt safe with him.

Their faces were only inches away from each other.

"Hi." He said, biting his lower lip.

"Hi." She reached up and kissed him. She didn't care, she didn't want to wait to have her lips touch his, she just went for it and he wanted exactly the same. He returned her kiss immediately, exploring every part of her mouth with his tongue. She moved even closer to him, as her hand made its way to his neck and her finger started to tangle in his hair. Adam snaked his hand around her waist and in one quick movement he had her right on top of him. The boxes with their burgers were long forgotten somewhere on the couch, the only thing Adam could focus on was Kim's lips kissing his jawline and slowly moving to find his neck. His hands that were firmly placed on her bum were starting to run up and down to the back of her things. He could feel her breather getting heavier and that only made his excitement grow even more. His hands were moving frantically trying to discover her body even over all her clothes. When his left hand found the bottom part of her t-shirt he slowly slid it up her back making goosebumps appear all over her skin.

Suddenly he realized what could potentially happen, and even though he really wanted it, he didn't want it like that. Not in a rush, not hiding from Grace, not without telling her that this was totally more than just a hookup for him.

He took a deep breath to calm down, he backed away a little and left a kiss on her forehead. His hands went to her arms and he slowly ran them up and down. Kim placed her hands on his shoulders and moved her body back just enough to see his face. His eyes still looked hungry.

"What's wrong?" Her eyes, too, showed hunger in them, but also confusion.

"Nothing's wrong. We're just playing with fire here." He said as honestly as he could.

"You're right. We need to stop doing this with Gracie sleeping in the other room."

"It's not just about Gracie." He sighed. "I'm gonna sound like a moron, but I want to do this right. I'm a bit old school I guess." He shrugged. Those were the best words he found to try to express what was going through his mind.

"You didn't seem so old school the day we met."

"That's because the day we met I was only blinded by how hot and sexy you are. Now I have the privilege to see this whole other side to you that makes you even hotter and sexier." He leant closer and pecked her lips. "Does that make sense?"

"I guess." She smiled and climbed off his lap. She totally knew what he meant and really appreciated his words. Kim also wanted this to be more. She needed to let it play out, just flow.

He observed her every move as she got her food and the remote control. "Let's start this thing from season one to see who wins this bet."

"But you're almost done with it."

"I am, but I want to see your reaction." She looked for the first episode and snuggled into Adam who threw his arm around her shoulders as they both finished their food.
