"Gracie, why don't you go with Uncle Kev so he can get you another muffin?" Jay suggested sweetly and Gracie smiled and nodded. She was ecstatic to see her uncle and figured that the adults were going to solve the rest. Adam put her down and the little girl darted out of the room leaving the three adults there.

"Who's gonna tell me what's going on? Where's Kim?"

Seeing Hailey tear up wasn't helping him at all. Jay decided to speak first knowing that his girlfriend was in no state to do so.

"Kim texted us this morning, she thought the was being followed."

"I know that Jay, Dawson told me that on the way here. I just wanna know where the fuck she is right now."

"Hailey went to get them." Jay continued but Adam was too anxious to wait for the rest.

"God damn it, just cut to the chase!" His voice was louder now.

"When we got there Kim realized that if we lost these guys, everything would go to shit again. She asked me to take Grace and insisted that she would go out as bait." Hailey finally spoke.

"You let her do that?" Adam's voice was more like a roar that rumbled the room. Jay and Hailey had seen him angry and frustrated before, but never like this.

"I tried to bring her with me, but she insisted and she was right." The blonde had burst into tears as she tried to explain the situation to her friend. "Jay was out there, he was gonna keep an eye on everything and cover her back." Hailey was choking on her own words and Jay knew he had to speak again.

"As soon as she left the parking lot, the SUV crashed into her car." Adam couldn't find the words he was frozen in front of his friends. "There was one DOA, the other two severely hurt and taken to Med. Voight and Platt are right there. But Adam, we're not sure about Kim."

"You're joking right? I mean you have to be fucking joking!" He was both furious and terrified, the worst combination of all. "For fucks sake Hailey! You are the trained detective, you are supposed to protect the civilians. Not the other fucking way around." He needed to yell, punch something, he needed to find out about Kim. "I have to go to Med."

"You shouldn't drive like this Adam." Hailey said while she was sobbing she didn't want to add any more

problems.

"And we can't go until Voight tells us something." Jay added.

"I don't give a fucking shit about what Voight says right now. And don't you dare tell me what to do." He gave Hailey a killing stare. "Call my dad, ask him to stay with Grace, I'm going to Med." He instructed Jay and left.

He couldn't sit there and wait, and he knew that it was a matter of time until he lost it and would end up saying something really cruel to Hailey.

Trudy was the first one to notice him come in. "Adam, what are you doing here?" She questioned him.

"Where's Kim? Is she alright?" He didn't make eye contact with either of them, instead he was looking around trying to find her. "Where is she?" He yelled.

"Ruzek." Voight's voice was firm and directed Adam's attention to him. "You're not supposed to be here."

"I don't fucking care!"

"Adam, snap out of it! You have to be with the Feds, getting Kit and Anne."

"Dawson is contacting the Feds, Jay is calling pops to get Grace. And I'm right here. Exactly where I need to be." Adam shut his eyes trying to fight back the tears. "Just tell me whatever you know, sarge. Please." He practically begged. Hank stepped closer to him and brought him to his chest in a one arm hug. He knew just how worried and stressed Adam was.

"We don't know anything yet, kid. We're waiting."

"Well, how much longer are we gonna have to wait?" The frustration and desperation in his voice was impossible to hide.

"I'm going to try to move things along." Trudy said, trying to soothe him and she took off. A few minutes later she was back with Will Halstead. "Well, Will just came back from the morgue. I figured he could help." Platt didn't sound too cheerful. There was nothing cheerful about the situation they were in.

"The body that came from the car crash was female." Will started to speak and Adam felt his world crash into a million pieces. "Probably in her thirties." When he felt Voight's hand squeeze his shoulder the tears cascaded down his face. "No ID on her, but there was a big butterfly tattoo on her forearm." Adam's head shot up and looked at Halstead immediately.

"Where are the other two?"

"Um, ER. It was a dirty crash, they both came in with severe injuries."

"Can I go?"

"No." Halstead said firmly.

"What's going on Adam?" Platt asked.

"The body in the morgue, that's not Kim. She doesn't have any tattoos." He explained to Platt and then looked back at Will. "You gotta let me go see her, please."

The older Halstead sighed at Adam's request.

"I can't do that. What I can do is go and check and tell you what I find out, until she's good enough to get visitors." Halstead wasn't supposed to do that, but he was being optimistic for Adam's sake.

"Yeah. Yes. That works." He was desperate and he was gonna take anything he could get.

Waiting for Will to come back was torture. Adam kept looking at his watch and the minutes didn't seem to pass. Voight went to get more information about the body that he needed for the case and Platt stayed with Adam, keeping him company while he waited for Will.

"She's going to be ok." Trudy held his hand tightly.

"You don't know that."

"You're right. But I choose to think about the best possible outcome."

"Trudy, if something happens to her… I don't know what I'd do."

"Let's wait until we hear from Will, ok? And then we'll figure out what to do. In the meantime, I'm going to let the rest of the team know. Is that ok?" Adam nodded and Platt took out her phone to call Kevin.

Adam didn't know what else to do, he was running out of patience. So when Will appeared, Adam immediately stood up and walked towards the doctor.

"And? How is she?"

"She's unconscious, but her vitals are good. From what we know so far she has a couple of cracked ribs, some bruising and lacerations on her face. There's also severe trauma to the head, but we're going to need to run some tests to properly assess that. Doctor Walker is doing that right now and when they are done they will take her to a room. If you want to let her family know, you can ask Maggie to help you with that."

Adam nodded, it was too much information to take in, but he decided to focus on her vitals being good.

"Yes, I'll talk to Maggie. Thank you Will, I owe you."

"Don't mention it Ruzek. I'll ask Dr. Walker to find you once they are ready."

"I appreciate it."

Although Will's update helped reduce the worry, Adam couldn't really think of anything, he didn't know what to do, he was in plain shock. He knew there were a million things he should be taking care of right now, but he didn't know where to start. He felt as if he needed to see her face to function. Both Voight and Platt noticed how shook he was and decided that it was best if they talked to Maggie and just let Adam be for a little while.

He felt how his phone vibrated from the pockets of his jeans, but he didn't care. The only thing that mattered to him right now was inside this hospital, everything else was taken care of, and deep inside, he knew that if it was something too urgent someone would contact his boss.

"Adam." Platt's voice was soft as she lightly squeezed his shoulder, making him look up. "Dr. Walker is ready to talk to you." Adam stood up quickly and walked with Platt, it was going to be nice to have someone stand beside him as he spoke to the doctor.

"Detective, I'm doctor Charlie Walker and I'll be taking care of Ms. Burgess case."

"How is she? Can I see her?" That was all he wanted to know.

"She's unconscious but stable. The broken ribs didn't cause any internal bleeding, so that's really good. There's one big cut in her right leg, we stitched it up already and it shouldn't cause any further damage. The trauma to her head was severe, we already ran the tests we needed but we'll have to wait a few hours for the results. You can see her, but be advised that she's pretty beat up. Her body is covered with bruises, there's a couple of cuts on her face and there's also some swelling. The impact with the other car was big."

"I don't care, I just wanna go be with her." Dr. Walker nodded at his request.

"Follow me."

The doctor wasn't exaggerating, she really did look bad. As soon as he saw her, he felt how his heart shrunk in his chest. He walked inside the room and hurried to stand next to her gently holding her hand and leaning forward to kiss her forehead.

"Hey Belle. It's me baby, I'm right here." He whispered softly and shy tears started to come out of his eyes. "Gracie is ok, and we got the guys that left thanks to you. It's all over now." He tried to sound calm but it was completely useless, his quiet sobs echoed in her room. "I'm so sorry baby, this is all my fault. I'll stay right here with you until you open those beautiful eyes of yours, ok?" Hank and Trudy watched from the doorframe. The only time they had seen him so heartbroken was when Kit and Anne had to go away, but now it was a whole different thing.

"Kid." Voight had to interrupt him. "We have to head back to the district. Dawson just let me know your brother and Anne are on their way home. Do you want to be there when they get here?"

"No. My dad can do that. I'll stay here."

"Ok. I'll have Atwater bring you some stuff. Text me if you need anything in particular."

"Also, Sylvie and her parents already know. So I guess they'll be here as soon as they can." Platt added.

"Ok. Thank you both so much."

"It's nothing. Call us if you need anything." Platt spoke again before moving closer to him and giving him the hug he obviously needed. "She'll be ok." He just nodded and got another hug from Voight before he was left alone with Kim.

He moved a chair closer to her bed and sat right there holding her hand. He had no intention of moving away from her, but he had to when he heard Sylvie's voice.

"Oh my god! What happened?" As soon as she saw her friend laying on that bed she bursted into tears. "Is she ok?"

"She's unconscious but stable. I know, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'm holding on to the stable part."

"How did this happen?" There were so many questions running through the blonde's head and she needed answers.

"This is all my fault."

"Adam, what happened?" He sighed and fell back on his chair only to take a hold of Kim's hand. He needed to feel her close, he needed the strength only she could give him to tell Sylvie the whole story.

He told her everything, from the very beginning. How everything had gone to shit with Kit and Anne, how Kim was an absolute sunshine helping him and Gracie, how these last couple of days he was undercover to try get his brother back, and how the car crash was completely related to that.

"I'm sorry."

"Hey, no. This is not on you." She wiped off her tears. "She's a badass, she'll come through."

"She better. There's still a bunch of things we need to do. Right darlin'?" Despite how sacred he was, his eyes still portrayed the deep love he felt for her.
