"Would you stop that already?" Adam asked politely as he amusedly watched his girlfriend move around his place and tidying up over an already spotless clean apartment. "You moved that plant five times already."
"I just want everything to be perfect." She whined.
"Everything looks great, the apartment smells incredibly good, the food and the drinks are already in the fridge and as soon as my pops gets here I'll get the grill started."
"And dessert? I didn't bring anything for dessert." The brunette started to freak out which made Adam smile once again. He held her by placing both hands on the curve of her waist and looked straight into her eyes.
"Anne said she'd bring that. Remember I told you that…"
Kim interrupted and finished the sentence for him, looking a bit embarrassed and realizing just how much she was freaking out over nothing. "...Gracie wanted to make dessert."
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry." She looked down in complete defeat, which only made her much more adorable to her man's eyes. "I don't know why I am so nervous right now. I swear I was totally calm last night."
"Well, I don't know if I would label that as calm, but whatever you say." He teased her, making her blush and earning a playful punch on his left shoulder.
"You seemed to enjoy my 'calmness' though." She said that noun with air quotes.
"I will always enjoy that, Belle. Always." Adam smirked and leant in closer for a quick peck in the lips. He couldn't push back the heat that the memories from last night had brought to him. "I don't know if I've said this already, but you look very good tonight." He grabbed her hand to twirl her around and continue with the shower of compliments. "The way those jeans are hugging your ass." He stopped mid sentence to bite his lower lip and shake his head. "It's doing stuff to me." He pulled her closer to him again, but this time his lips went straight to her neck.
"Adam." She tried to scold him, but the tone in her voice was giving away just how much she was enjoying the contact. His touch on her was her own kryptonite and at this point she knew better than to fight against it.
"What?"
"Don't distract me."
"I'm not distracting you. I'm just helping you relax." His mischievous smile made her laugh.
"My sister is on her way. She texted me fifteen minutes ago. Your idea of relaxation will quickly turn into frustration if we keep this going."
"Fair point."
"Besides." She briefly paused, not knowing the expectations she was raising in him. "I want to take our sweet time when you do end up helping me calm down at the end of the night.
"Oh, great." He rolled his eyes. "Now you know exactly where my mind will be during the whole dinner." Kim only laughed and wiggled her brows. She wasn't about to admit it to him, but she was looking forward to the end of the day as well.
When the bell rang Adam was actually happy to hear it, since visitors will probably stop Kim from making sure everything was nice and ready for the billionth time.
Nicole, John and Zoe were the first ones there and Kim was thrilled to see her older niece. It had been a while since they last saw each other, the girl was full on living her teenage life, enrolled in almost every after school program and as if that wasn't enough, she was totally committed to her field hockey team. Her dynamics plus the fact that they had moved farther away meant that her participation in family events was down to the minimum and with everything that had been going on in Kim's life, sometimes it was really hard finding a moment in which all of them would be available.
"Tía!" Zoe was the first one to speak and go straight to her aunt's arms. "Are you feeling better?"
"I am honey, thank you. But look at you! When did you grow this much?"
"I have no idea when that happened. What I do know is that none of her clothes fit her anymore." Nicole said, rolling her eyes as she stepped into Adam's place hugging him first while her daughter was still wrapped in her younger sister's arms. "Hi Adam, thank you for having us. This is such a lovely place."
"Thank you and welcome." He responded politely.
"Adam, this is John, my husband."
"It's a pleasure to meet you John." Adam greeted extending his hand out receiving a firm shake from Kim's in-law.
"The pleasure is all mine. I was really looking forward to meeting you and have someone else to add to the manly conversations. You can only imagine what it's like when these three get together." John said playfully, trying to give Adam a warm welcome to the family.
"Oh, come on. It's not like we torture you." Nicole added.
"Besides, I feel like we haven't hung out together in like a million years." Kim contributed to her sister's comment.
"That's true." John nodded. "I think the last time was when you were at your parent's right after the accident."
"That sounds about right." The teacher agreed.
"Maybe next time we can have the both of you over. Have a nice cookout and show Adam around the place." Nicole invited.
"I'd really like that." The cop answered, getting closer to his girl and wrapping her waist with one arm.
"Ok, but when school's out. I wanna be there too." Zoe finally interacted with the whole group.
"Of course." Kim said smiling to her niece. "Adam and I have a little vacation planned for the summer, but we can totally make it work."
"That settles it then." Nicole told her younger sister.
They kept talking cheerfully and getting to know Adam a bit more. John followed the detective to the kitchen after asking him where he could leave some things the Silvers had brought to contribute to dinner.
Zoe was glowing to be with her aunt aunt to see her so happy.
It wasn't long until Kim's parents and the rest of the Ruzeks joined the party. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and the hosts were thrilled about that. Kim was glowing to see her family and Grace was the life of the event, the little girl had no problem socializing and Zoe quickly became her role model. Luckily Zoe liked kids and she found the little munchkin adorable, and even if she didn't recognize it, having the chance to enjoy the little things she would do when she was younger was something that she liked, reminiscing her childhood and the joy of being around her tía.
Adam's place hadn't been so busy since he moved in and had his house warming party, but this was a totally different vibe and it said so much about how he had matured and the man he was becoming.
He stood by the grill and looked around the apartment with a bottle of beer in his hand.
Phill and Bob had left him for a little while and headed inside to get some things that were needed for the barbecue.
"What are you thinking about?"
The detective was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't even realize his brother had joined him.
"Nothing."
"Hmm. I've known you since you were a baby and I can recognize that face from a thousand miles away. So, are you gonna tell me what's going on?"
"Nothing." The younger brother took a pull of his beer and turned to look at his brother. "I guess I'm just thinking about life."
"Well, in that case you're doing pretty good, bud." Adam just let out a soft chuckle making Kit cock his head a bit confused. "What's that supposed to mean? You don't like the life you're building?" Concern was tinting Kit's words.
"What? No." He answered quickly. "I do like it, very much."
"It was just a question. I mean before the case, way before Anne and I had to go and we left Gracie with you, your life was pretty different. You were always a responsible guy, but you were 100 percent party and 0 percent commitment and even though I know how much you love your woman, maybe you were missing your old life. It's normal if that's what you're feeling, you don't have to feel bad about it."
"It's not that. Yeah, my lifestyle was pretty different from what it is now but I don't miss it. To be honest Kit, I think this is what I always wanted and I was just hiding behind that narrative to protect myself." Kit looked down, he knew exactly where his brother was coming from and it killed him to know that that ghost was still haunting his little bud. "I never thought that I could have what you have, to have this." He said that last part pointing to what was on the other side of that glass door. "I guess a part of me is afraid that all this will crumble down and fade."
Adam turned to the grill and flipped around some burgers, ultimately not wanting to reveal all his fears to his older brother.
"Remember when I got married?" Adam nodded. "You asked me how I knew that Anne was the one and that it was going to work out."
"I remember."
"And do you remember my answer? Not every love story has to be like mom and dad's. Not everyone is destined to that ending. I don't think Anne and I are going down that path and I most certainly don't think you will either."
"What makes you so sure?"
"I don't know." He shrugged. "Adam, you're a family guy. You always have been, even when you were going though that party guy phase. Why do you think Anne and I left Gracie with you?" A faint smile appeared on Adam's face. "And when I see you and Kim, the connection you two have, how the both of you just blossom around each other. How could that possibly have a bad ending?" Kit's hand tightly clasped his brother's shoulder. "Adam I'm so proud of you, of the man you became, of how you brought our family back together. You deserve the best bro, and that's exactly what you're getting. Enjoy what you're living and don't be afraid."
Adam nodded before his brother wrapped him in a hug. "Love you man."
"Love you too, Kit. Thanks for trusting me."
"In a heartbeat."
John stepped on the balcony shortly after the brotherly interaction. He helped around with the food and it was very easy for the three of them to get along. They talked about everything and once Phill and Bob joined them the chatting continued.
"I'm really glad you guy's organized this." Phill spoke while all five of them were around the grill, leaving the girls inside doing their thing. "I already know how easily you and Kim fit into each other, but know I think our families are just as good a match."
"Yeah, thanks for having us Adam." John said. "Kim's like a sister to me and seeing her shine like this, after all she's been through, I mean I remember her crying over Andrew and saying she was never going to fall in love again. Seeing her now this happy and excited, it means so much to all of us, Adam. Thank you for that too." His words were very honest and all the men present were moved by them even if they weren't too fond of revealing their emotions in front of other guys.
"Well, she changed my life so… I guess I'm the one who would be thanking her."
"Let's all just be grateful for the big family we're becoming." Bob raised his glass of bourbon in a more cheerful note, bringing back the focus to the present and the good time they were having.
Inside the girls were catching up with everything and just like Kim had predicted, Anne and Nicole quickly bonded over their jobs, realizing they had many things in common.
The brunette just watched everything in complete delight. Sometimes she found it hard to believe that her life was this amazing. Sure there were lows, but the highs certainly made up for it,
"You seem to me doing so much better, honey."
"I am mom. I keep thinking how lucky I am to have you all, to be here and to be healthy. Everything could be so different right now, and yet here I am surrounded by so much love."
"Yes sweetheart, you're here with us. We managed to go through this together." Kim nodded at her mother's kind words. "How are things with Adam?"
"They're good, very good. Adam is amazing, mom; I have no idea how he puts up with me. Because you know I can be stubborn and moody, especially after the accident and he's so understanding and supportive."
"That's because you're the apple of his eyes. Don't let Gracie hear me say that." Anne said as she looked over her shoulder making sure her daughter was entertained and made the Burgess women laugh.
"He's mine too. I never thought I'd have another shot at love and look at me now." Kim commented cheerfully.
"Food's ready." Gracie's chirpy voice echoed through the apartment as she came running in front of her dad and uncle.
"Thanks muffin for the introduction. Just like Ms. Ruzek informed, the food is ready. Would you ladies like to eat here or outside?"
They ended up having dinner inside. It was such a fun evening for all of them and Kim felt like she was thanking another step towards the right direction, to where she wanted her life to go. That was her family and there was no one else in the world who she wanted to build a family of her own than with Adam.
As she say goodbye to their guests and watched as Adam did the same, sharing a special hug with his niece, a huge sense of pride invaded her chest. That was her man.
