"What is going on here?"
Hanna could not believe what she had just come across as she walked around the corner as she was heading home from spending time with Maya. Her husband had her father pinned against the wall, yelling at him about his job.
"Quintus let him go!" she snapped now as she came in between the two most important men in her whole life.
They both looked startled and shocked now as they both gazed at her. Hanna didn't know which one to talk to first, but she chose her husband.
"Quintus talk to me. What is going on? Are we in trouble?"
"Hanna..." he started as he gazed into her eyes that were flooding with tears.
He had hurt her once more and he hadn't meant to. "Darling...I might lose my job."
"And you're yelling at my dad because of that why?"
Quintus looked down. "I don't know."
"Unbelievable. I thought you two were past fighting!"
She gazed into her husband's eyes now, tears finally falling. "I'm staying with daddy, Faith and my brothers tonight and you and I can talk tomorrow. We can talk more then about how you seem to think you're job is more important than you're wife!"
"Hanna no..."
She wiped her eyes as her dad wrapped his arm around her, leading her away as Quintus stared after her heartbroken. Gaius walked in silence with his daughter now, squeezing her against him gently. He had been quiet the whole time, but Hanna wasn't mad at him. He finally broke the silence once he had led her inside and upstairs to her bedroom.
"Han...I..." Gaius started as he sat down on her bed, taking her hands gently.
"Daddy I'm not mad at you" Hanna said softly as she sat down on his lap, wiping her eyes before hiding her face in his shoulder. "He's the one who tried to hurt you."
Gaius kissed the side of her head gently and rubbed her back as she started crying once more, holding onto him. She and Quintus had arguments before and they always seemed to work it out but Hanna was torn in this situation.
"Daddy what do I do? Is his job really that more important than me?"
"I don't think it is sweetheart. I think he's just upset and...Han I really don't know all the details."
She shook her head and twirled her wedding ring around on her finger as her dad held her close to him. Her dad. Who loved her more than anything in the world. Who took on the role of father and saved her from a life of pain when she was just 16-years-old. Even though he legally adopted her when she was eighteen, he had replaced her real dad for that whole time. And she cherished him and every moment they spent together.
"He attacked you daddy. I don't know if I can forgive that one" she said softly, kissing her father's cheek gently.
"Baby I've seen worse in my life. You know I'm tough."
Hanna laughed a little now, wiping her eyes. Her father was always good at trying to cheer her up and this time it was no exception. Gaius kissed her forehead and took her face in his hands.
"I can't tell you what you should do sweetheart, but just know that whatever you decide, I will always be on you're side."
Hanna nodded shakily and hugged her dad tighter as he rocked her back and forth gently, kissing her cheek.
The next day Hanna walked slowly into her husband's office, biting her lip to keep the tears from falling. She had missed him the night before, but she knew she had needed some space to cool off. She was torn between being mad at him or loving him at that moment. He was standing by the window, gazing out at the street now and she couldn't help but think of the month before her brother got sick and they had been standing there wrapped in each other's arms.
Flashback
"Sometimes I wish I could get out of this town" Quintus said, staring out the window as he pulled Hanna to him, her back against his chest as he kissed her neck a couple times.
Hanna gazed up at him, her hands tightening around his arms just a little bit. "Where would you go?" she whispered softly, nuzzling his cheek a little.
"Rome" he said simply, rubbing his nose against hers, turning her around to face him now, kissing her softly.
"And where do I fit into that plan?" she asked now, gazing into his eyes as she placed her hands on his chest.
She didn't know what to do if he left and she never saw him again. Quintus fortunately picked up on this and kissed her once more, this time a little bit deeper as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"I would take you with me of course my beautiful Hanna" he whispered softly, kissing her nose as he ran his hands through her hair.
She smiled now. That beautiful smile that he loved so much. He would do anything to see her smile like that all day long and he would never tire of it. He leaned in gently and whispered softly into her ear. "You would love Rome darling."
She smiled, holding onto him tighter. "I would love any place as long as I am with you."
End of Flashback
"Hanna?"
Her husband's voice brought her out of her trance now as he walked towards her hesitantly, taking her hands in his. Tears fell from her eyes now as she gazed into his own. He wanted to wipe them away, but was afraid she would push him away and he wanted her close. For her to know he had made a mistake. Without warning Hanna gave into her desires and leaned forward, kissing him, wrapping her arms around his neck. Quintus picked her up in his arms, cradling her to his chest as he carried her towards the couch, motioning for everybody else to get out of the room.
"I'm so sorry Han" he said softly as he set her down before laying down next to her. He placed a hand on her cheek, wiping her tears away.
"I never meant to make you think that my job was more important than you."
"Tell me what happened" she said softly, placing her hand on his cheek. "Was it Atticus?"
She didn't like Atticus at all. He seemed to taunt her husband and torture him whenever he left or entered a room. Plus he had it out for her best friend's father and it didn't sit well with her.
"You could say that" he said softly, scratching her back gently. "That or he had some influence with people who are higher up."
Hanna placed her head on his chest and sighed, wrapping an arm around his waist. "Well I mean what can we do Quintus? We're really not in control of this."
He nodded and kissed her head, letting his lips linger for a moment. "And I'm sorry about you're dad as well."
"He's over it" she said softly, closing her eyes now as she bit her lip. "Just please don't start anymore fights with him Quintus. He's my father."
Quintus nodded and tilted her head gently, kissing her passionately as he pulled her closer to him. Hanna could never stay mad at him for long. He flipped her and grinned against her lips as she kissed him once more,
"You know...there is more to life than a job" she said as she gazed up into his eyes.
"I know" he whispered softly, kissing her cheek, nose and lips, making her smile now as she pulled him closer.
"What were you thinking about just now when you walked into my office?" he asked softly, placing his forehead on her's, closing his eyes.
"Do you remember that day when we were standing in here by the window and you said that sometimes you wished you could leave the city?"
"I do" he said raising an eyebrow now. "What's the point you are trying to make?"
"Well don't you think we deserve a vacation? We haven't been anywhere since we were married."
Quintus laughed now and nuzzled the side of her face. "We'll see how this job thing goes" he said softly. "We need to be careful about money."
Hanna nodded and kissed him once more, wrapping her arms around his neck. They would work things out if Quintus did lose his job, but by now they both knew there were more important things than a job.
