Emmett
I had finally made it back to my Rosalie. Leaving her had been the hardest thing I had done, and it hurt even more that there had been an incident whilst I was gone.
She lay motionless before me; she had turned to look at me when I had gotten back and reached for me to hold her, but she had remained silent. She had not spoken, and she seemed quite deep in thought.
She did not stir even when Edward came into the room. "Can you understand her thoughts?" I dropped my voice so Rosalie would not hear me.
"It's still a jumbled mess." Edward sighed. "She's really good at guarding it. I can pick up a few thoughts here and there – just like Alice with her future. She is scared, swirling the idea of an eating disorder around and around. She is in denial, convincing herself that she is not unwell, but that is all I can really make out. Carlisle is just getting the medical supplies ready and then he will be coming in. I'm not sure how we talk to her about this."
I shifted Rosalie on my lap slightly so I could see her face. She was still staring off into nothingness but did glance at me for a few seconds as I moved.
Carlisle came into the room with the supplies just as I was about to speak. Rosalie moved this time; clocking that Carlisle was carrying more medical supplies. She stiffened in my lap, beginning to move off the bed.
The monitors shrilled in protest of her movements, and I had to tighten my grip on her to get her to stop. "Get Jasper, now." I muttered lowly. We needed him during this to help keep her calm.
Jasper came within seconds, moving into the corner of the room behind Carlisle. Rosalie did not clock him – her eyes were fixated on the medical supplies as Carlisle laid them out on my desk. I could feel Jasper's effect on the room instantaneously which meant it would also have an impact on Rosalie.
She did become less stiff on my lap and her racing heart slowed slightly, although she still appeared on edge. She was stubborn and I knew there was no way we could fully calm her during this.
"Rose," She looked at me like a dear caught in headlights when I spoke. "We are really concerned about your physical health. Your body is really struggling to cope, and it won't be long before it gives out completely." I could not continue, so Carlisle took over.
"I will need to insert a nasogastric tube. This will ensure you get the hydration and nutrition you need quickly. The insertion isn't pleasant, but it should be relatively quick and painless if you work with me on this."
I shifted Rosalie deeper into my lap – pinning her in a hug so her arms were immobilized against me.
Carlisle moved forward and I could feel tears falling from Rosalie's face. "I need you to try and drink when I ask you to, as the swallowing will help advance the tube into your stomach and make it less uncomfortable, okay? I know that will be difficult."
Edward held a cup with a straw and sat next to the bed so he could hold it for Rosalie. Carlisle measured the tube from Rosalie's ear down to her stomach, marking a point on the tube. He then dipped the end into a lubricant substance and began passing the tube down Rosalie's nostril.
My grip tightened on her automatically as she gagged and began to whimper. I wanted her to know I was there and I was also silently telling her how sorry I was but that it was a necessary procedure. It would help her in the end.
Carlisle tried to encourage Rosalie to take small and slow sips of the water, but she found that too hard to handle. She managed the tiniest drop, but I knew it was not enough to help the tube glide which made the procedure even more uncomfortable.
Jasper increased the effects of his power until the procedure was done and Carlisle checked the tube was in place by placing a stethoscope on Rosalie's stomach after auscultating air. He then secured the tube to Rosalie's cheek and started to hook up the nutrients.
"Well done, Rosalie." Carlisle said softly. "It's all done."
Rose was already struggling in my grasp. Her whimpers were getting louder, and tears were streaming down her face. She had lost her usual colour and was desperately trying to reach for the tube in her nose.
"I'm so sorry, Rosalie." Carlisle continued, turning to grab something from his medical bag. "These are pinel restraints. I am hoping to only use them for a short time so that the nasogastric tube can remain in place, and we ensure your physical safety. They are the most comfortable ones to use." Carlisle's eyes were sad, and I knew he was only considering this for the safety of Rose.
It did not sit right with me, but I wanted Rose to be safe. At the moment, her body was at risk of failing her.
"Please no," Rosalie was thrashing my arms at this point, and I was worried that my hard body was going to cause her stress. I moved from underneath her, keeping her sitting up on the bed so Carlisle and Edward could apply the restraints. I held her arms as Carlisle applied the shoulder strap which would keep Rose lying flat on the bed. I lifted her up so the pelvic and waist belt straps could be applied which would then link to mobilize her wrists to the bed. It seemed excessive but we needed to keep Rose flat on her back so that she would not be able to reach her hands to dislodge the tube.
It was over in a matter of seconds, but it was killing me to hear Rose's screams. Her thrashing had stilled, and she had now stopped resisting due to the help from Jasper, but it still broke me.
She was sobbing and she was so distressed that her heart rate was rising rapidly. "Rose, you have to calm down, baby. Please, your heart is under so much stress."
Edward increased her oxygen flow and repositioned the oxygen tube. "Deep breaths, Rosalie. In, out. In, out. You're fine; its okay."
"I don't want to be fat. Please make it stop. I can't have the calories. Please. Don't do this." Rose was gasping as she got out her words but eventually, she grew too tired to resist or to talk.
I stroked her sweat-soaked hair soothingly, trying to relax her. Her breathing was still rapid despite the high flow oxygen and Jasper was at the highest level he could be to calm her down.
Eventually, Carlisle came to the decision we needed to sedate Rose.
Within seconds, Rose fell into a sedated sleep and the room filled with silence.
I let out a long breath and slumped back against the bed. "Oh, Rose."
