"Sarah what are you saying?" Yussif asked shocked now as she stood in front of him.
It was her and her family's last day in Capernaum. Her mother, father and twin sister were going back to Jerusalem and she was going to be one of Jesus' followers. It pained her to even tell Yussif this because she was in love with him and she knew what the religious leaders thought of the whole prospect of the Messiah. He didn't even know of her feelings for him and that hurt the most.
"I'm following this man. Abba thinks he's the Messiah" she said, looking down at her hands before looking into his eyes finally. His chocolate brown eyes that she had fallen in love with. And she yearned to reach out and touch his face just once before he most likely would turn his back on her.
"Sarah be careful what you say" Yussif said, his words fading away when he noticed the tears in her eyes.
They flowed down her cheeks now as she gazed into his eyes. "I knew you would never understand. I pray you come to see what and who this man really is Yussif. And I pray that one day you believe. Even if you don't believe in me."
She cautiously leaned in and kissed his cheek, a tear landing on his beard as she did so. "Goodbye Yussif. I love you."
He didn't expect the last three words to come out of her mouth as she walked away from him. She was sobbing and he wanted to run after her in that one moment, but he was frozen in place. She loved him? How did he not see this? He watched now as her father brushed her tears away, kissed her forehead and walked away, his arm around her.
Over the next month, Sarah tried her best to be a good follower, but it was hard when Yussif was on her mind all the time. She watched in awe as Jesus performed miracle after miracle and helped people who needed his help. It felt good to be apart of something like this and to perform acts of selflessness for people who needed it the most. Even if it did cause unwanted attention from the religious leaders.
Most people were shocked to see the daughter of the great Nicodemus with this man who was one of the most important Rabbis ever. With most of them turning against them, all hope seemed to be lost that she and Yussif would ever have a chance. With each passing day, she thought about running back to Capernaum and right back to the man she loved, but she was sure he wouldn't love her now.
One day they were not too far from Capernaum and Mary and Ramah came into their tent to find Sarah packing her bag. "Sarah...where are you going?" Ramah asked now, looking a bit confused.
"Capernaum" she said softly, sniffling a bit, not meeting her friend's eyes.
"Why?" Mary asked now, kneeling down to place a hand on her back softly.
"You know why Mary" she said standing up as she wiped her eyes. "I love you all. You have become a second family to me, and I know Jesus has asked us to make sacrifices for him, but I'm miserable without Yussif."
Both of Sarah's friends instantly embraced her and cried along with her.
"We will miss you" Ramah said sadly, looking at Sarah now, who truly did look miserable. Now that she thought about it, she had been miserable for days on end.
"I will miss you all as well" she said softly as she made her way towards the exit of the camp. She turned slowly and smiled at the two other women. "Tell the others goodbye for me."
"We will Mary said as she waved to Sarah as she walked away slowly. She didn't want to leave her new friends and Jesus, but she knew that she was doing the right thing.
She walked the long way around, so she could avoid her friends. She couldn't bare to face Jesus. She had come to see him as a second father and she had never wanted to dissapoint him. She walked all the way through the night to get to Capernaum, never stopping for a break or anything.
By the time she reached town it was dawn and she was exhausted, but she didn't stop until she reached the synagogue, walking inside the entrance that she and her father had walked into so many times. The one that lead towards the Torah Room. Sarah dumped her bag down on the ground and leaned against the wall, out of breath.
Suddenly her chest started hurting and she clutched at it gasping for breath as she closed her eyes. Would Yussif even accept her? Would the other Rabbis? She was about to sink to the floor when someone wrapped their arms around her, pulling her up into an embrace. She clung to the person who was holding her, starting to cry as she was fighting for her breath.
"Sarah" A familiar voice said softly as a hand went into her hair, pushing it out of her face.
Her eyes shot open now as she looked up at the one man she had been dreaming about for a month. "Yussif..."
He took her bag and slung it around his shoulder before picking her up in his arms. His warm, comforting arms. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her tired eyes gazing into his own.
"Did you walk all the way here?" he asked gently as he carried her outside and all the way to his house. He looked down at the girl he loved now and not at the stares he was getting from other people. He didn't care anymore. All he had thought about for months was the girl in his arms.
She looked exhausted and he couldn't help but wonder what had happened out there that had made her like this.
"Yeah. I missed you so much..." she whispered softly, placing her forehead on his cheek as he continued walking. Tears continued to stream down her face and Yussif would do anything to make them dissapear. He would give Sarah the world if he could.
He kissed her forehead softly, his lips lingering on her skin as she clutched a part of his shawl gently. "Sweet girl" he whispered softly, nuzzling her gently.
Finally he reached his house and set Sarah down gently, making sure she was steady before unlockng the door. He led her into the house now, his hand gripping her's gently as he set her bag by the door. It was small, but perfect for the both of them. He then turned to face her, taking her face in his hands as she continued to cry softly.
"Shh...Darling, calm down. I'm right here. I have you."
She placed her hands over his and leaned her forehead on his cautiously. "Y..you don't hate me?"
His eyes widened, looking shocked that she would even think such a thing. "Sarah no...No darling" he wiped her tears away with his hands before removing his head piece, placing it on a chair. "I'm sorry if I had made you think that."
He then took her into his arms, holding her close to his chest as he hugged her tightly, not wanting her to slip through his fingers this time. Sarah held onto him tightly as well. As if she would lose him at any moment. It was the first time he had ever hugged her and she wasn't about to let him go. It felt like she was finally home.
"I love you" she whispered shakily into his shoulder, her voice tired from crying.
He pulled back a little, taking her face in his hands once more, his thumbs stroking her cheeks. "I love you too Sarah. I thought you were following Jesus. What happened?"
She leaned forward and kissed him gently, one of her hands landing on his own. "You happened Yussif. I don't want to spend another moment without you for the rest of my life."
He gazed into Sarah's eyes for a very long moment before pulling her into another kiss as she wrapped her arms around his waist. They stayed like that for quite some time, lost in eachother's embrace before they both came up for air. He lifted her back into his arms once more before walking over to his bed, laying her down on it gently.
"Get some rest Sarah" he said softly, leaning down to kiss her cheek. But right before he could walk away, she took his hand gently, making him stop. He heard her soft voice once more.
"Stay..." she said gently, gazing into his eyes. "Yussif please? I missed you."
He turned around and slipped his shoes off, laying down next to her without hesitation as he pulled her into his chest, his hand running through her soft hair. He placed a kiss on her nose before smiling down at her. Sarah smiled as well, reaching up to brush a stray piece of hair away from his face, gazing into his eyes once more. He kissed her lips softly, placing a hand on her cheek, remembering something that she had said when they had parted last.
"Sarah...you said something when I last saw you that bothered me a little. You said that I didn't believe in you."
She gazed up at him, clutching onto his robe gently as some hair fell into her face, covering one of her eyes, which Yussif pushed back behind her ear as he placed his forehead on her's.
"I believe in you Sarah. I believe in everything you tell me. I'm just not sure that I believe this man is...the Messiah"
"I know" she whispered softly, gazing into his eyes as she stroked his cheek, feeling the scratchiness of his beard against her fingers.
"Just give it a chance Yussif? That's all I ask."
He thought for a moment, gazing down at Sarah. Into her dark brown eyes, at her beautiful hair that fanned out against the pillow and her cute button nose that he leaned down to place a kiss on once more.
"I will Sarah" he whispered softly before kissing her once more, one of her arms going around his neck as he pulled her closer.
"I'm glad you came back to me Sarah" Yussif whispered softly as they kissed once more, lost in each other's embrace.
