Jason followed the sound of pressurized air, knowing that it would take him straight to the problem. What exactly was the problem?
Two giants were battling out in the middle of the city, and there was no one strong enough to stop them.
Jason's first clue was the uneven thumping. Despite its unevenness, it had a rhythm to it. Any battle between two people had a rhythm to it, especially if the two people knew each other.
Him and Reyna had their own little dance whenever they practiced one on one bouts. Reyna always beat him in hand to hand combat, but he always bested her when weapons were drawn. Reyna always favored her left side when fighting with her sword, and Jason felt out of balance without a weapon in his hand.
Their fights were always quick, to the point. As if to say, we know what our weaknesses are so lets get this over with. But neither of them gave up, not until they were defeated.
Jason smiled at the memory.
Eren and the Female Titan, on the other hand, had an uneven rhythm. One of them was more skilled than the other. Based on their fight in the forest, Jason assumed the Female Titan was the more skilled of the two. Their fights had more intensity to it, more hits, less strategy. There was an anger to it.
The first lesson the wolves taught him was to fight with a clear mind. A clouded mind not only loses fights, but is a danger to themselves and those around them. Lupa's warning echoed in his mind.
Jason reached an intersection, and slowed down. While the other cadets turned right to follow the female titan, Jason turned left and saw the aftermath of destruction left by the two giants. The entire street was destroyed. Somehow, everything was on fire, and charcoal black soot covered every inch of the street. Bodies of soldiers and civilians were littered everywhere. If it weren't for the black soot and fire, there would have been more blood. Buildings were destroyed, and whatever buildings were left were in flames.
Not even the Titan wars left this much devastation. Yes, many of Jason's friends had perished in the fight against Krios, but that battle had taken place on a mountain. Even the battle for Manhattan didn't have this many casualties.
And these were just two giants duking it out. Jason thought to himself grimly.
Still shocked by the sight, he had no idea what to do. Should he follow Jean and the commander to fight the Female Titan? Or should he stay here and help who he can? If he went to fight the Female Titan, he would only have one chance to electrify her. After that he would be useless to that fight. And what if there was no one left to save? Walking through carnage only to find no one alive sounded like a horrible thought to him.
What should I do? Oh gods, I wish Annabeth, or Leo, or anyone was here to help me! I can't make this decision on my own…
No one knows how things would have turned out. Armin's words abruptly appeared in his mind. We don't know, but we will always face choices. We have to choose.
A little girl's cry took him out of his trance. She was walking from the destroyed street, a toy bear in her arms, tears filling her face.
We have to choose.
Jason ran towards the destruction.
