The son of Jupiter was currently being dangled on the edge of the largest wall he had ever been dangled off. His current mode of transportation to the top of the wall was two wires and a plank.
A swing.
A very unstable swing.
He looked out to the distance, the sky had darkened significantly over the course of the morning. He noticed a cloud filled with water approaching them. While the elements in the sky didn't respond to his command, he could still feel their essence. The cloud would approach them, lightly rain, and then leave just as quickly.
At least I can predict the weather. He thought sarcastically to himself.
Keeping his legs inward, he looked down. At the bottom of the wall were the rest of the party. Those who could still fight were the last to climb the wall. Jason, surprised at his recent impulsive behavior, was not one of those people. Due to depleting his gas in less than five hours of wearing the equipment, he was one of the first to climb the walls.
Finally he looked up. He had maybe twenty feet left to be pulled. He wondered what the top of the wall looked like.
Pressurized air released below him. Many of the scouts could climb the wall on their own. Eren passed him on the climb and stood at the wall's edge. Waiting for him to reach the top, he offered his hand. Jason took it.
"You and I have something in common." Jason stated.
Pulling him up, Eren asked. "Oh yeah? What's that?"
Jason, standing tall on the wall, answered. "We both killed our first titan today." He raised his hand for a high-five.
Eren put his finger under his chin. "Well technically, I've killed quite a lot on my own. Today was just my first kill with ODM gear."
"Please, let me have this one."
Eren chuckled and reluctantly slapped Jason's hand.
"Why, because you wasted all your gas killing one titan." He smiled at his joke.
"You know what, fighting monsters was never this hard. Usually, I would just control the weather, send in a lighting bolt, and the matter would be resolved. Now, all of sudden, I gotta cut the nape off…"
"GRACE!" Hange suddenly shouted from a distance. She had a harsh tone. Eren gave him a ohhh you're in trouble face. Jason returned with an expression that said, Wow, very mature Eren. Despite this, Jason was glad he could provide some levity. If Eren could forget about his troubles even for a second, he didn't mind being the butt of a joke.
Jason lightly jogged past three large wooden poles each holding a ragged red flag. He had underestimated the size and width of this edifice. Have these walls really been up for a hundred years?
As he walked towards Hange, the cloud that Jason saw earlier darkened the top of the wall, raining lightly. The Section Commander had her arms crossed. She was not happy.
"Give me a salute." She demanded.
Jason raised his eyebrow.
"Can you give me a salute or not!"
Jason couldn't think of their salute off the top of his head. He thought of doing the Roman salute he gave to the statue of his father every morning, but he didn't think that was appropriate.
"Answer me!"
"No ma'am!" He finally answered.
"EXACTLY! You are neither my subordinate, nor an officer in this military. But when the scouts take in a civilian, they protect them! Your impulsive, idiotic actions on this mission could have cost the lives of at least FIVE of my subordinates!"
"Who?" The word came out before he could stop it.
Hange's eyes narrowed in anger. "How about, Moblit, Mikasa, Armin, Nifa, and my new found friend here, Historia!" She pointed to the girl he failed to save down at the castle. Her blonde hair was loose and her skirt was ripped. She looked tired. Jason thought her face looked familiar.
"I promised Levi I would bring you back to him ALIVE. So, from now on, you stay with Historia." Her face came closer and closer to his. "You try anything, make any move, and I'll push you off this wall myself. Do you understand?"
He gulped "Yes ma'am."
She huffed. "Good. Now then..." She and Moblit walked away from them. "Our original goal was to seal the hole in the wall."
Jason sighed in relief. He never thought a person like Hange would get so worked up. She was right of course, but still, she was scary.
"Ms. Hange's lectures always pack a punch." A peach harried scout got him out of his thoughts. Jason hadn't noticed due to his 'lecture', but between the blonde haired girl and the peach haired Scout lay an injured girl.
Jason approached the injured person. She was in pretty bad shape. From what he could see, she was missing both an arm and a leg. The rest of her injuries were covered by a scouts hoodie. The blonde haired girl pushed her black hair out of her eye. I wonder what happened.
Jason looked to the peach haired soldier. "I never thanked you for saving me last night. I'm sorry I caused you trouble."
She shook her head. "Dealing with unexpected situations is part of the job. Don't worry. Just… be more careful next time you encounter a titan…"
"Jason." He filled in his name.
"Call me Nifa." She shook his hand.
The blonde haired girl widened her eyes. "You're the boy from the expedition. The one Armin found."
Jason, realizing who she was, asked. "Isn't your name Christa?"
She looked down in shame. "It's… not."
It doesn't look like she's comfortable talking about it. He changed the subject.
"Well, I guess we'll be sticking together for a while." He stuck his hand out. She didn't shake it. Jason awkwardly returned his hand to his side.
"It's the garrison's advance squad." Hange voice behind him grabbed his attention. "They're here to tell us where the breach is." Everyone crowded around Hange, waiting for the members of the garrison to climb the wall.
It was quiet for a bit. Jason sat next to Historia, examining the injured girl. She had tanned skin, but there were strange muscular-like scars under her eyes. She wasn't the titan shifter everyone was looking for…Is this what a titan shifter looks like after they transform? He just then realized he hadn't seen a titan transformation happen in real time.
The girl suddenly gasped and opened her eyes. They were light green.
"There is no hole in the wall?" Hange exclaimed in the distance.
"Ymir!" Historia exclaimed next to him. The girl yelled out in pain. "OH MY GODS!" She yelled out loud.
"Ymir! Are you alright?" Historia asked.
"I can't feel my arm! What's wrong with my stomach?" the girl cried out. Historia tried to calm her down, "Ymir! You're going to be okay. Try to stay calm."
The girl looked at her. "My name is not Ymir! Ahhhh!" She cried out in pain.
Historia leaned back from the injured woman. Nifa was confused at the situation. The green eyes looked down and found Jason.
"JASON!" She started to tear up. "Apollo was right! You're ok!"
Jason got up to his knees. "How do you know me?" He asked.
"It's me!" Her light green eyes were filled with pain. "It's Rachel!"
Jason pushed Historia out of the way. "Rachel? Rachel Dare?!"
"Yes!" She tried to get up but was impeded by the ropes keeping her still. "Why am I tied up?"
"But.. The Rachel I know has red frizzy hair and doesn't shapeshift into a monster."
Historia stood behind him. Nifa said nothing. Rachel's breathing was uneven.
"This isn't me! We…" she took a breath, "we couldn't find your body. We've been looking for you everywhere." Her forehead was sweating. "Apollo returned to godhood, and the first thing he did was find me. He said I was the closest one to you." Her breathing was getting worse.
"Rachel, I think you need to breathe…"
"NO! I feel the connection fading. I don't have much time." She took three more breaths. "Tell me where you are, so we can come get you!"
Jason didn't know how to respond. He wanted to ask a billion questions, but now was not the time.
"I…I don't know where I am. There are walls here and monsters, but the mist doesn't work. My powers don't work either."
The steam was increasing on Ymir's body. "Walls? The mist doesn't work? You're not making any sense."
Historia placed her hand on Ymir's forehead. "She's burning up." She narrowed her eyes. "Whoever you are, you're hurting Ymir! Leave her body. Now!"
Jason pleaded with the girl, "Historia, please..."
Green mist emerging from Ymir's body grabbed everyone's attention. "No no no no. Not now!" Rachel yelled in dismay. The green mist took hold of Ymir. Jason had seen this only once before, back when he went on his first quest with Piper and Leo.
The spirit of Delphi began citing her prophecy towards Historia.
Queen of the Walls protected by the spear.
Your ancestors' vow, broken and feared.
Used to melt the ice of lies.
As footsteps of doom ruin all lives.
Beware the day that he attacks.
For humanity's end will be back.
Delphi's ancient green eyes then turned to Jason.
Child of Lightning resurrected twice
forced to defend the shallow light
Follow the traitors who persist,
for Gaia hides among their midst.
Through this path may be your demise,
A found Hero you will arise.
The green mist vanished. Ymir finally closed her eyes.
"Rachel? Rachel!" Jason called. But before he could do anything a chill went down his spine. Lightning! Where? That cloud only had water in it!
CRACKLE BOOM!
CRACKLE BOOM!
Air suddenly rushed past them. Historia was blown away. Jason impaled his blade into the brick and grabbed her forearm. She held on tight.
He looked at the source of all the chaos. Jason eyes widened at the sight.
A behemoth, the size of twenty giants, stared down on them all. Bright red muscles covered the surface of its body. Its arms were thinner than its torso, but even those were the sizes of large tree trunks. The arms proceeded to come down on them.
"GET OFF THE WALL!" Hange yelled. Nifa proceeded to grab Jason who was still holding on to Historia. All three jumped off the wall, right when the arm hit. Nifa, with Jason holding on to her, had lodged her hooks into the wall, along with the other scouts. Historia, in Jason's arms, noticed what the arm had grabbed.
Historia yelled out in vain for her friend. As the last lightning strike sounded on the other side of the wall, Jason realized that he had lost his only chance of getting home.
