It Had To Be You
Upon request/suggestion... :)
Clark Kent leaned against the wall watching as everyone else was having a great time at Hal Jordan's party.
"We are going to eat up everything and get drunk! It's my night! I can do what ever...and who ever I want!" Hal joked. He then turned to Carol. "I'm joking on the last part, babe."
Carol rolled her eyes. Hal smirked and grabbed her by her waist, pulling her into a kiss.
"Awww!"
Clark looked down into his cup just staring until he heard a familiar heartbeat walking through the door. He looked up and saw Diana Prince. He smiled but then his smile dropped when he saw she wasn't alone. He sighed and was about to walk out through another way, not wanting to stay any longer. But Diana already spotted him.
"Clark?" She called.
He looked back at her and gave a slight wave.
God, she was so beautiful. Dammit, he should've left earlier.
"Hey, Clark!" Diana beamed.
"Hey, Di."
When she hugged him, his heart skipped a beat.
"Clark, I want to introduce you to Gary."
Clark looked at him.
He smiled and held out his hand for Clark to shake.
"It's great to finally meet the famous Clark Kent. Diana talks a lot about you."
Clark shook his hand.
"Man, I think I may need to hit the gym more. Making me look bad, Kent," he joked.
Gary Bronson, 36, 6'0, a congressman. 8 years older than Diana, 4 years older than Clark.
"She has spoken of you as well."
"I'm betting not as much as she has about you, though. I have to say your blogs are interesting reads. Congratulations with your partnership with Cat Grant. I met her a few times."
Diana frowned a bit noticing Clark was a little standoff-ish.
"Gary, Clark and I have a few things to catch up on. Could you give us a moment?"
"Oh, yes, go ahead. I think I see someone I know."
When Gary walked away, Diana turned to Clark with a raised eye brow and folded her arms.
"What's wrong, Kal?"
"Nothing, just a lot of things on my mind. Our last mission..."
"Everyone is safe. It was a close call but it's all fine."
"Yeah..." he looked down. He couldn't look her straight in the eyes.
"Kal? Kal, look at me." She took his hand. "The mission is only a small portion of what's bothering you. I should use my lasso but I won't. I'll let you tell me when you are ready. But whatever is truly wrong, it's going to be okay. You can always talk to me. I am your best friend and you are suppose to come to me and talk whenever there is something wrong."
Clark sighed and looked up at her. Damn was he that transparent? No, Diana knew him like the back of her hand and could read him like a book.
"Thanks, Di. But I'll be fine."
Diana stared into his eyes. He was holding back. She knew it and never liked when he did that. She sighed and hugged him.
"I'm always here for you, Kal. Nothing...no one will ever change that," she whispered in his ear.
Clark finally relaxed and hugged her back.
Now
Diana sighed as she got into her taxi.
"Good evening, Miss. Where to?"
"Abacus."
"Oh that's quite the snazzy restaurant. I was thinking of one day taking my wife."
Diana smiled. "That's nice."
"First time there?"
"Yes."
"Ah, well I heard nothing but good things. Food is spectacular."
Diana looked out the window and sighed again. This will be her and Gary's 8th date in a year. With all his and her traveling, they actually hadn't spent much time together. For Diana, that has felt like a good thing. Upon the time they have spent together, Diana realized she didn't want to take things any further with him.
She remembered the first time he kissed her. He didn't send her soaring like a woman would expect. Some kind of spark but actually she didn't feel much of anything.
Gary is a kind but not the interesting man she thought he was at first. Maybe it was because he was trying to have this image of the perfect politician. Whatever the case was, Diana wanted to break things off soon and tonight is soon enough.
Once she arrived, her heart fluttered. She was not in no way trying to break anyone's heart, however trying to make something out of this when clearly it's not and clearly she doesn't have serious feelings, would hurt more.
When she went inside, she spotted Gary seated already.
"Yes, ma'am, how many?" A waiter asked.
"I'm here for Bronson." She pointed at Gary.
"Oh, right this way, ma'am."
The waiter grabbed Diana a menu and walked her to the table.
"Oh, hey, Diana. You look incredible," Gary smiled.
"Thank you."
"I already ordered their finest wine. We have a lot to catch up on and I have a surprise later."
"Oh..." Diana's heart fluttered again.
They ordered their food, ate and talked. Though, it was Gary who was doing most of the talking.
An hour later...
"Diana? Are you okay?"
Diana slightly jumped realizing for the passed hour she had actually tuned him out. Her mind was totally somewhere else on someone else.
"Yes, I'm fine."
"Ready to go?"
Diana nodded.
Gary smiled and paid for dinner.
They left out the restaurant and waited for a taxi for Diana.
"Um...you know what? How about I take you home?"
"Oh no, it's fine. It's the opposite direction of where you live. No need to backtrack."
"It's okay and besides that gives us more time for the night."
With the look he was giving Diana she knew exactly what he was implying.
"Gary, I-"
"Hold that thought. I can't wait any longer for the surprise."
"Gary."
He was taking something out of his pocket. He then started to bend down on one knee.
"Gary, stop and listen, please."
He frowned and stood up straight. "What's wrong?"
"I've been trying to find the right words to say this to you. But... The dates we have had were nice. I have enjoyed most of the conversations but going any further..."
"Are you breaking up with me?"
"I'm sorry. I didn't want to hurt you. I shouldn't have waited til now when you were about to propose to say something. And I'm also not ready for that step yet either anyway."
Diana hated lying but she didn't want to hurt him nor embarrass him even more. The real truth was that in actuality he isn't the man she wanted proposing to her.
Gary looked down and cleared his throat then looked up at her with a smile. "It's okay, Diana. I understand. I'm sorry for rushing things. I know we haven't had a lot of time and the long distance thing hasn't been working out as I would've liked."
"You are a very kind man, Gary. You will meet the right woman for you."
"Thank you for being forward with me. This was for the best."
Diana smiled and nodded. "Thank you for understanding."
"You are an amazing woman, Diana. The guy that's able to put a ring on your finger is going to be the luckiest man in the world."
Diana smiled.
A taxi pulled up.
"Ok...well I'll let you get home. We can still be acquaintances, right?"
"Of course," Diana smiled again then got into the taxi.
Meanwhile...Metropolis
Clark couldn't concentrate on anything. He sat on the sofa, slouching back and sighed deeply. He never knew he could feel this way. Full of so much regret, his heart broken. He did it to himself. He should've been truthful. He shouldn't have let her slip away so easily. He shouldn't have taken the many chances he had with them alone together for granted. He shouldn't have chickened out and let someone else swoop in and have a chance with her.
"Dammit."
Flashback: WatchTower
Superman took a deep breath before knocking on Wonder Woman's quarters door.
The door slid open and there was Wonder Woman standing there with her gorgeous smile.
"Hey, Kal."
"Um...hey..." All of a sudden his mind went black. He nervously ran his hand over the back of his head. "I wanted to tell you...um...Cat will be having a gathering. She's overly excited and being over the top. But I wanted you to be there."
"Of course! What kind of best friend would I be if I didn't?"
She took him by surprise embracing him. Kal at first tensed then relaxed wrapping his arms around her embracing her tighter.
Here was his chance right here, right now.
"Diana..."
"Yes, Kal?"
"I-"
WatchTower emergency alert went off.
"Never mind...it's nothing. Let's go."
Flashback End
Two weeks had passed. Diana hadn't had the chance to talk to Clark. For one, he was away on a mission and two before he left, it seemed like he was actively distancing himself from her. When he had no choice to be in the same briefing room with her, he was still not himself.
Downtown Metropolis
Superman was smashing through Toyman's robot toy soldiers with ease. This was his way of letting out his frustration.
"Why are we even here if he is going to be a show off?" Shazam asked.
"You are one to talk, kid. Anyway, he seems to be pissed about something. Let him blow off some steam."
Wonder Woman frowned and flew off to him.
"Superman?"
He just kept punching through robots.
Wonder Woman rolled her eyes and whipped her lasso around a robot, smashing it into the remaining robots.
"It's done. Now talk, Kal."
"Diana, it's nothing for you to worry about. I'll get over it."
"Get over what? Kal, you've been acting so distant from me for months. What happened? Why won't you tell me?"
"I don't know if anything will change and it's selfish of me to even think it would. I'm sorry, Di."
"Kal?"
"I need to be alone. Clear my mind somewhere else."
"Kal, don't-"
He quickly kissed her cheek then flew off.
"Seriously, what the hell is up with him?" Barry asked.
Diana shook her head. "I don't know. But I'm sure as hell going to find out." Diana flew off. "Bruce, where is he?"
"Communicator off."
"Seriously?"
"What happened, Diana?"
"I don't know. That's what I'm trying to figure out. I'll contact you if I find him and you do the same if you get to him first."
Diana headed to Clark Kent's apartment building. At first she went to his window but it was locked. So, using her lasso she twirled it around her body, changing into civilian clothing.
She walked into the building and smiled seeing the security guard, Marcus.
"Good Afternoon, Marcus."
He looked up and smiled. "Hey, Miss Prince! How are you?"
"I'm fine. How about yourself?"
"Good, but even better seeing such a beauty."
"Thank you."
"So what's up? Big man Kent was actually talking about you our last conversation."
"Oh really? What did he say?"
"Talking about sports and he just asked out loud if you would want to go to a game. Honestly, just anything we talk about somehow he connects it back to you. You are still living in London, right?"
"Yes."
"Yeah, he talks about that too. The days my boy has a big grin on his face, I know you must be in town."
Diana blushed and smiled. "I never knew all of this."
"Oops...I probably wasn't supposed to tell."
"It's okay. I won't say anything. Is Clark home?"
"Nah. I haven't seen him. Shoot, haven't seen him in about four days. Last time I did see him, still seemed down about something."
"Really?"
"Do you know what's going on?"
"Oh no, I'm actually here to surprise him. He might be at work. I'll go see if he is there."
"Well when you catch up with him, tell him to give me a holler."
Diana smiled and nodded. "Will do."
Flashback: Clark Kent's apartment
Clark laughed. "Diana, you do know this is your fourth bowl of popcorn? The first movie isn't even done yet."
"It's so good, Clark! I can't help it."
Clark laughed again. "I just can not resist that pouty look of yours."
Diana smiled innocently. "I promise, you won't have to pause the movie again. We can finish it now."
15 minutes back into the movie, Clark looked down and noticed Diana's hand was still in the popcorn bowl.
"Di?" he whispered.
She was laying on his shoulder asleep. Clark smiled and eased the bowl away from her and leaned forward as much as he could to put in on the coffee table. He then carefully adjusted them both to lay comfortably on the couch. Clark was behind Diana with her back against his chest and Clark had his arm around her.
Diana snuggled back a bit more into his embrace and sighed happily.
"We didn't finish..." she mumbled in a sleepy slur.
Clark lifted his head and leaned over to kiss her cheek. "Don't worry about it, Di. Go to sleep."
Flashback End
Diana made her way to the Fortress of Solitude. Clark had given her a key about 2 years ago. She never thought she would exactly have to use it.
"Kal!" She called going inside.
She looked around a bit and still no sign of him. She sighed. "Where are you?"
"Diana, it's Bruce."
"Where is he?"
"On the moon."
"What in the Gods' names is he doing there?!"
"I don't know. Vic was able to by pass whatever he did with his communicator just for his location but still not able to contact him."
Diana sighed. "Alright. Well I'm going home."
"Where are you?"
"The Fortress."
"Hm. It's best for you do go home. He'll come to you."
"Do you know what's going on with him?"
"He'll have to tell you himself."
"Bruce, wha-"
"Batman out."
Diana was now pissed. She left the Fortress and went home.
She didn't appreciate going on this wild goose chase and sure as hell didn't appreciate Clark acting so distant and not telling her whatever is bothering him.
She was exhausted and just wanted a warm hot shower and get in her bed.
Meanwhile...
Clark was still on the moon, contemplating. This is such a selfish decision, isn't it? He didn't want to put Diana in an awkward position but he made up his mind. He had to tell her his feelings. Maybe that would make it easier for him to move on. Maybe it wouldn't hurt so bad and he can or try to be content with Diana being with someone else.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard the sound of thunder coming from earth. Ominous clouds hid the sun from view as it started to pour down. He didn't care. He was determined to figure this out. Impulse. He took off fast back to earth heading to London.
Diana watched the rain fall on the window. She finally found enough energy to move to a new position in her bed. As she watched the rain pour down, she got out of her daze as the doorbell rang. She frowned then got out of bed, picked up her robe and put it on as she walked downstairs to the door.
She looked through the peephole and immediately recognized the person as Kal. She quickly opened the door and saw that he was soaking wet.
"Hey, Diana."
"Don't hey Diana me. You had me worried all this time! You went to the moon!"
"I'm sorry."
Diana sighed and looked at him sympathetically. "Come inside. I don't want you standing here getting drenched even more."
Clark came in, shutting and locking the door.
"Take off your clothes."
Clark looked at her surprised and taken aback by her directness.
"I won't be long, Diana. I just need you to hear me out."
"Your clothes need to dry."
"Diana, I-"
"Clothes off. I'm going to go get you a towel."
He couldn't say anything else. She was already going up the stairs and right now he was in no position to argue with her over this. He couldn't ruin this chance.
Clark took off his clothes just standing there in his boxers. What a way to make things even more awkward.
As Diana was coming back downstairs she did a double take at him. All of a sudden her heart skipped a beat. She took a deep breath trying to keep her composure.
Of course she has seen him shirtless plenty of times. And every time, it does make her heart flutter...but this felt different.
"Here you go," she said handing him the towel.
"Thanks..." he said taking the towel and handing her his clothes.
"I'll be right back. Go ahead and make yourself comfortable in the living room. Did you want anything?"
"No, Di, I'm good. I just want to talk."
Diana nodded then went to hang his clothes to dry.
Clark sighed walking into the living room and sat down on the couch.
When she came back, she sat next to him.
"So what is it you wanted to tell me? Is it that bad you had to go to the moon?"
He sighed. "It's been eating away at me for a long time. I kind of had a few fights with myself and I'm sorry." He took her hand and looked deep into her eyes. "When I tell you this. You don't have to say anything at all. I just need you to listen."
Diana slowly nodded.
"I love you, Diana. I'm very much in love with you. I know it's too late to tell you this and I had many chances to but I backed down. I shouldn't have done that. I should've told you a long time ago." He looked down again. "That's why I've been so distant. Seeing you with Gary...I couldn't bare it. Not when I haven't told you how I've felt. I know you don't feel the same for me and that's fine but I want you to know how I truly feel about you. I don't want to make things awkward between us either. I support and respect you, Diana. I want you to know that I will always be here for you. I want you to be happy and your happiness is very important to me. " He looked up at her and she was just staring at him. "That's...that's it. That's all I wanted to say."
Clark stood up, about to walk away to go get his clothes.
Diana was overwhelmed and her mind was racing.
"He wanted to propose to me," she blurted out.
She saw his shoulders slump down a bit.
"Oh..."
At that moment, Clark felt worse and felt like Eros shot him in the heart shattering it into billions of pieces.
Diana stood up and reached for his hand. "Wait."
Clark frowned confused then turned to face her.
"I'm glad you told me the truth. That's all that matters to me. But what disappointed and hurt me was that you started to shut me out, Kal. I told you no one would ever come between us and I meant that. But you are the one that was turning away."
"It was stupid and selfish of me."
"Kal, I need you to understand you are the only man I have ever given all my trust to. That I can feel vulnerable with."
Tears started welling up in Diana's eyes. A stray tear started running down her cheek.
"I-...Diana, don't cry. I didn't want this to end up like this." He gently cupped her cheek and wiped the tear away with his thumb. "I should go."
"No. I have more to say to you."
Clark nodded. "Ok."
"Gary tried to propose two weeks ago. At that moment when I knew what he was going to do, I stopped him. He was trying to move too fast and he knew that. We went out only 8 times and for me, there wasn't a connection. He wasn't the man I can give my heart to. He wasn't the man I have already given my heart to."
"What do you mean?"
"Kal, it had to be you. It's been you. I can't see myself give myself to anyone else but you."
"Di..."
"For the longest time, I thought that we just had this unspoken agreement to keep our relationship just as friends but there have been moments of us in more than just friends positions. It's like we unconsciously couldn't help ourselves being together." With Kal's hand still cupping her cheek, Diana put her hand over his. "You are my best friend, the man I have fallen for and love."
Clark grinned proudly and wrapped his other arm around her waist pulling her closer. Diana put her other hand on his shoulder. Leaning down, Clark captured her lips in a soft kiss. They both flinched feeling the instant spark when their lips touched. Then he deepened the kiss holding her tighter.
They felt this fire and it was something they couldn't stop. Wouldn't stop. This pent up tension they've always had could finally be released.
When they broke away, Clark and Diana smiled shyly at each other.
"I should put back on my clothes...?"
Diana looked down at his chest then looked back up at him with a smirk. "Are you asking?"
Clark chuckled. "I don't know."
"Well I rather you not. We've waited far too long and I-"
Diana was cut off by Clark pressing his lips against hers. When his tongue grazes the bottom of her lip asking for entrance, she shamelessly let him in. Their lips locked and their bodies met hungrily. Then he picked her up bridal style carrying her to her bedroom.
Pulling away slightly once more, Clark kissed her cheek.
"No more waiting then."
Going into Diana's bedroom, Clark kicked the door closed. He went over the bed and laid Diana down gently. This moment had been waiting to happen for a while and they both knew it. Now it was time to make it a reality.
"I've thought about this... a lot and I want this with you more than ever."
"I've thought about it, too. Probably way more than I should have. I admit that."
Diana bit her lip then giggled. "Neither of us have to think about it anymore." She took off her night gown. "Kal...I want you...I want you to ma-"
Diana stopped in mid sentence as Clark takes one of her breast in his mouth, palming the other, making her moan loudly.
By the time Clark moved on placing kisses on her stomach, she knew she would have serious love marks.
Clark smiled and put her legs on his shoulders, kissing the insides of her thighs, making her shiver. As his kisses get higher up her thighs, she arched her back in anticipation and almost lost her mind when he finally reached her core.
She moaned even louder and closed her eyes. Her breathing becomes ridged as Clark continued. Diana ran her hands through his hair.
Soon Diana feels herself close, and within a few minutes of Clark holding her legs in place, she climaxed.
"Oh Clark!"
He looked up from licking her clean. Diana looked at him in awe as she tried to catch her breath. Clark licks his lips, crawling back up her body, his member pressing against her thigh. He peppered kisses on her neck, and when he hit a soft spot, Diana moaned louder in his ear.
Clark trailed back up to her lips. Diana smiled against his as they kissed.
They were in a whole new world together. They were in such a blissful state. Completely naked physically and emotionally together.
As Clark settled between her legs, his mouth found hers again, hungry and insistent. She wrapped her legs around him.
Clark broke the kiss and looked at her.
"Diana."
She cupped his cheek, smiled and nodded. That was all he needed as an answer.
They continued staring at each other as he finally ventured inside her, slowly, so slowly, until he was fully inside her.
"I love you," he whispered.
"And I love you," she whispered back.
Only then did he start to move backward and forward between her hips, still looking at her right in the eyes. Clark didn't want to lose track of her eyes.
Diana gasped as he started to move a bit faster. Her soft, warm lips touch his cheek. Diana tightened her grip on his shoulders and almost screamed his name. Their sounds of love soon overcame the thunder.
Clark ran a gentle line of kisses down her throat to her collarbone. Then going back up to her lips, his tongue begged for entrance and she instantly allowed. Both were exploring one another's mouth, tasting the flavors of one another, feeling the ecstasy of such a passion-filled kiss.
Diana pushed Clark to lay on his back. She rose up biting her lip. She ran her hands slowly up and down his chest as Clark moved his hands to grip her hips.
Diana threw her head back, moaning softly as she rode him, taking completely control over their rhythm.
Clark couldn't take his eyes off her. She was so beautiful, and finally, after all these years, it was so sweet, and so good to be as one. It was even better than what they could ever have imagined.
He wrapped his arms around her waist and sat up, capturing her lips in a kiss. Diana moaned in his mouth feeling herself close around him. She broke the kiss, gasping and throwing her head back again. Clark took advantage raining kisses all over her neck and down to her chest.
Diana smiled cupping Clark's face, bringing him back into a soaring kiss. Clark turned them back over laying Diana on her back. Diana wrapped her legs back around him, holding him close and dug her nails into his back.
The climax took Diana first, and she cried out with the release. Now she was no longer looking at him because she was losing all self-control, but Clark kept looking at her. He wanted to see her come, and when he felt her whole body tighten he suddenly let go of everything and her cry of passion sent Clark over the edge.
Their tongues found their way in each other's mouths right at the same time and their bodies started to relax against each other. They kissed for minutes, not saying a word, completely lost in each other. Their bodies were as attuned to each other as their souls were.
Diana sighed happily and finally spoke, staring into his eyes.
"This is much better."
"It is." Clark caressed her cheek. "I'm such an idiot for waiting so long."
Diana caressed his cheek then ran her thumb across his lips slowly.
"Kal, it's complicated for us. It always will be."
"No matter how complicated it will be, we're in this together. I won't ever let you go. Never let you slip away from me again. I love you so much."
"I'm not going anywhere. Always side by side. Partners. Best friends. And Lovers." Diana smiled.
Clark smiled back proudly and kissed her deeply.
