Snippet 3 – K.O. aka Back to the Future II – Marty's Revenge

Souta looked like he was having an aneurysm. She thought she could see a vein pulsing under his bangs. His jaw was clearly clenched, it looked like he was going to start growling at her too. Kagome got more nervous at this point.

"Okay, Souta, forget it," she raised her hands and softened her tone. "But how about my other question? It is my birthday, right?"

A gentle nudge in the right direction, hopefully.

Her brother straightened up when she seemed to back off. 'Nee-chan sounds serious still,' he thought before, "Today's your sixteenth birthday."

"My what?" she shouted reflexively.

This could not be happening. Something was off. She had lost about six months of her life. Body twitching in panic, Kagome looked around quickly. And then realized: she felt the Spring air when she came out of the wellhouse. The air smelled fresh, the heat of the sun was a soft warmth that signified it was not yet summer, but not fall. The snow had melted in the last month or so and the environment was still crisp with the snap of cold. The leaves on the ground were a verdant green. Goshinboku looked vibrant and fluffy and like the blooms were about to sprout.

It was Spring!

The eleven-year-old snorted and pulled at his sweater collar harshly before moving to walk around his older sister. Clearly he was on a mission. His eyes were closed, his nose was in the air, and he was slowly marching away as if he had not been trembling in fright barely fifteen minutes ago. Souta was headed toward the shrine entrance and steps. He had to get to school.

She needed information - she needed it fast, before this day continued on. She could not go in blind. She could not let him get away without answering all of her questions.

"Please, Souta! Wait a minute!" Begging was definitely an option. Kagome spun on her heel to follow, grabbed onto his sweater sleeve as nicely as possible to halt him. The pleading bright blue doe eyes worked. She knew it did every time, even if he liked to act tough often.

"What now?" he tried to free his arm without dragging his sister down. She seemed a little different than usual, and didn't want to startle her. He kept his eyes closed and turned away from her. "We're gonna be late for school. In case you forgot, you still gotta go even if it is your birthday."

Muttered curses came unbidden, a trait she picked up from her half demon companion. She started to tear up a bit at the thought she would never see them all again.

"But what –" she began. Her fingers twitched, still holding onto his sleeve.

Two masculine shouts from the steps drew her attention.

Souta sighed dramatically, as only an eleven-year-old could. "And Izuku-nii and Katsuki-nii are calling for you. What'll they think when they see your outfit? You need to change!" He pushed her as gently as possible back toward the house. "I'm not gonna try to stall them, just to let you know."
