Chapter Twenty-Eight
Another day on the boiling isles, another day at magic school. Turns out Skara's birthday was around the corner. Boscha was being her usual self.
"Too wiggly. Too obvious," said Boscha, changing her nails with magic before settling on one. "Now we're talkin'! I think today is a talons day… rawr!"
"Hey, girls! Time to bug out at my birthday party!" said Skara, handing out butterfly shaped invitations. "Invite only, but you witches are my VIPs!"
"Are these made of real insect wings?" asked Amity, looking at the invitation.
"My dad spared no expense!" said Skara, smiling. "You only turn 15 once!"
"You only turn every age once, Skara," said Boscha, before hearing Luz nearby.
"Prepare thyself to do battle like a human!" said Luz, in position to thumb war with Willow. "Thumb war!"
"It's funny 'cause it's stupid!" said Willow, laughing.
"It's so weird that two humans go here now. Too bad they already burned their social life at the stake. Any friend of Willow's is an automatic dork," said Boscha, before the invitation started to molt. "Ugh! Skara! Why did you give me an invite that was molting? Gross! Give me another one."
"An invitation to Skara's party!" said a Blonde Kindergartener, jumping for the invitation. "I want it!"
"I want it!" said a Squirrel-like Kindergartener, jumping for the invitation as well.
"Huh…" said Danielle, seeing the two kids fight. "Isn't anyone going to stop them?"
"Oh. Kid fight!" said Snake-like Beast Keeping Teacher, seeing the two kids fight, excited.
"Kid fight?" said the Kindergartener Teacher, smiling.
"Kid fight!" said the Detention Kitchen, shouting excitedly.
"What, no," said Danielle, walking over and grabbing the two kids, one under each arm. "Okay, that's enough. No fighting."
"But…" said the Blonde Kindergartener, staring at Danielle. "Skara's party!"
"Ow," said Danielle, the Detention Teacher grabbing her arm. "Hey, what are…"
"Let them fight," said the Detention Teacher, pushing Danielle away. "Stupid human."
"I can't believe they allow such behavior," said Danielle, staring as the kids go back to fighting before walking over to the lockers were Luz and Willow were. "Fighting just over an invite is ridiculous."
"Oh my gosh, Willow, I'm so excited for photo class! I can't believe you can make pictures of your actual memories!" said Luz, tickling her locker open. "I'mma see me some baby Willow!"
"One of the few classes we have together," thought Danielle, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I'll admit, I was adorable," said Willow, smiling.
"Don't eat that," said Luz, the locker biting down on her book. "Whoa! Hiss!"
"Release!" said Danielle, glaring at the locker and receiving the book in return. "Thank you. Here ya go Luz."
"¡Gracias!" said Luz, being helped up by Danielle and holding the book.
"I can't believe they'd even hang out with her! It's just embarrassing," said Boscha, walking down the hallway and holding her fingers around her eyes like glasses. "Oh, look at me! I'm going on a date with my ferns!"
"That could be anyone!" said Luz, staring at Willow.
"Does this help?" asked Danielle, rubbing Willow's back.
"Kinda," replied Willow, sighing.
"Solid Willow impression, Boscha!" said Skara, staring at Boscha then Amity. "Amity, weren't you friends with Willow?"
"I'm a Blight. We only associate with a select few," said Amity, walking away. "Keep annoying me though, I'm happy to select fewer."
"Oh, I coulda sworn that you guys hung out," said Skara, walking after Amity.
The bell rings signaling the next class. The girls and Willow head to photo class. Willow and Luz were partnered up, while Danielle was partnered up with Mattholomule. With fanged tweezers in hand and sanitizing them, Danielle was careful pulling a photo from Mattholomule's ear. Luz was grabbing photos from Willow's ear as well.
"Aw, wasn't I adorable?" asked Mattholomule, seeing a baby picture of him in his older brother's arms.
"Cute," said Danielle, seeing the baby picture.
"Now for some of yours," said Mattholomule, grabbing the tweezers and placing them close to Danielle's ears.
"Please, don't let it be certain memories," thought Danielle, cringing. "Please, don't let it be certain memories. Please, don't let it be certain memories."
"Fog up the memories," shouted Caius, speaking to others. "It won't just be her memories but ours as well."
"Someone just doesn't want to revisit being rejected by Raphtalia again, does he?" said a Masculine Voice, grinning at Caius. "Or was it Sadeena? Rino maybe."
"Shut up!" shouted Caius, glaring at a certain someone.
"Alright, memory melon, let's pick another juicy one!" said Luz, grabbing another photo from Willow's ear.
"Be careful with my brain!" said Willow, wiggling her ears slightly.
"Ooo, who says brain surgery is hard?" said Luz, placing the photo on a wire.
"As you work, note that some prints have greater clarity than others," said the Photo Teacher, looking at Willow and Luz. "These are moments that evoke a strong emotional response."
"Ooooh, that feels funny," said Danielle, rubbing her ear after Mattholomule grabbed a photo.
"All the colors of the brainbow," said Luz, about to touch a photo only for an illusory hand to stop her.
"But, if you damage the prints, you'll damage the memories themselves!" said the Photo Teacher, walking away. "Be extremely careful."
"Is this suppose to happen?" asked Mattholomule, getting the Photo Teacher's attention while looking at Danielle's memories, the photo being sparkly white.
"Mmm, no," replied the Photo Teacher, staring at Danielle's memories. "It's like your memories don't want to be seen."
"You think!" shouted Caius, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Whoa. Photo class is intense," said Luz, before Willow's memories started to develop. "Oh my gosh, Willow, you had an awkward hair phase, too? I knew we were meant to be friends. Ooo, there's more!"
"Ugh," said Willow, turning away upon seeing a photo of her and Amity hugging when they were younger.
"Hey, I know you and Amity have a history," said Luz, putting a hand on Willow's shoulder. "Wouldn't you feel better talking about it?"
"No, I'd rather do this," replied Willow, flipping the photo around. "That's my motto, after all! Out of sight, out of mind."
"If you won't tell me what she did, I'll never be able to cook up a scheme to make you friends again," said Luz, stopping Willow when the bell signaled the end of class.
"Luz, don't push Willow," said Danielle, standing at the doorway. "She'll tell you when she's ready."
"Thanks Danielle," said Willow, staring at Danielle then Luz. "Luz, I get it, but I don't want you to do that. No schemes, no plots, no ruses, none! Okay? Now, let's get to lunch!"
"She never did mention anything about... shenanigans," said Luz, twirling the photo back around when Willow wasn't looking. "Wait up!"
"Hi Amity," said Danielle, waving at Amity.
"Hey," said Amity, waving Danielle off.
"I can't believe I made him cry," said Boscha, staring at Amity as they walked past photo class. "Like, he's the teacher."
"Hm?" said Amity, spotting a certain photo of Willow's in photo class. "Oh no."
"Why do you look like you've seen a ghost? Is there a ghost in photo class?" asked Boscha, trying to peer in photo class. "Are they cute?!"
"Yep, just a super cute ghost," replied Amity, stopping Boscha from seeing. "But they're all mine!"
"Ask if they have any friends!" said Boscha, seeing Amity close the door.
"Willow, I'm sorry. But I have to do this," said Amity, slowly igniting the photo and walking away before turning around and seeing the flames spread. "Huh? Oh, no. No, no, no, no! Um, uh... Oh, come on!"
While Danielle headed to construction class, Luz and Willow headed to the cafeteria. Pulling out the packaged lunch Danielle made, Luz stares at a board Gus had set up while Willow went and grabbed some food before rejoining Luz and Gus.
"Hey there, detective," said Luz, staring at the board then Gus. "Are you solving a crime or about to commit one?"
"Sadly, this is one problem crime can't solve. My interview for journalism class is due tomorrow! I'm supposed to choose someone interesting, accomplished, and noteworthy," said Gus, staring at Luz. "People aren't meant to be all those things! Curse your need for perfection, Gus!'
"Okay buddy, okay," said Luz, giving Gus some of her juice. "So, Willow… whoa. Are you okay?"
"Mmm, cranapple," said Gus, enjoying the juice.
"When did it get so hot?" asked Willow, sweating before drinking some water and pouring it over herself then cleaning her glasses before her pupils dilate making her eyes completely black. "Uhh, hi! I'm Willow! Remind me of your names?"
"This is serious journalism, Willow," said Gus, staring at Willow then looking away. "Clowning around will get you nowhere."
"I'm—I'm serious!" said Willow, squinting her eyes. "Who—who are you?"
"I'll admit, this amnesia spin has piqued my interest," said Gus, looking at Willow.
"Gus, it really seems like she's forgotten us, like her memory is…" said Luz, coming to a realization and gasping. "Like her memory is gone!"
Grabbing Willow, Luz and Gus hightail it to the photo classroom. Willow lingered behind some but eventually caught up.
"Hexside Free Press!" said Gus, slamming open the door. "What's going on here?"
"...Hi," said Amity, trying to blow out the flames and noticing Luz, Willow, and Gus.
"You destroyed Willow's memories?!" said Luz, confronting Amity.
"I-I saved as many as I could!" said Amity, holding some photos up only for an ember to burn them to ash. "Ugh! Why would they make memories so flammable?"
"Have I always had this crazy thing? Blap, blap!" said Willow, slapping her face before walking over to Luz and Amity. "Eeee, heee, heee, I can tell we're gonna be good friends!"
Deciding to cut school short, Luz, Amity, and Gus take Willow out of school. During the course of leaving school, they happen upon Danielle and drag her along. The moment they got to the owl house, Luz explained to Eda what happened.
"So, this is the Owl House," said Amity, looking around.
"Yup," said Luz, staring at Amity.
"And you... sleep here?" said Amity, staring at Luz.
"When the night critters allow me to," said Luz, before staring at Danielle. "Though at the beginning, it was enduring Danielle's sleep cuddling."
"Hey," said Danielle, crossing her arms over her chest. "I didn't know I sleep cuddled till I came here."
"So, you set Willow's memories on fire and erased everything," said Eda, staring at Amity. "Even minor damage can have huge effects!"
"Ahh, a chair for sitting!" said Willow, bumping into the couch before doing a handstand and flopping upside down on the couch.
"Willow," said Danielle, concerned and helping Willow into the right position. "Here, let me help."
"Okay," said Willow, staring at Danielle.
"Yep, her brain's burned up real good. Damage like that can change everything about a person," said Eda, pointing at her head than looking at Willow. "Willow may never be the same."
"I got it!" said Willow, sitting properly with Danielle's help before seeing King and picking him up. "Ooh, a furry fruit! I'm gonna peel it!"
"What?" said King, feeling Willow grab his fur. "What is happening?!"
"No," said Danielle, grabbing King. "Not fruit."
"Nap time," said Eda, casting a sleep spell over Willow.
"Sleep spell..." said King, yawning and falling asleep in Danielle's arms.
"I didn't cast it on you," said Eda, staring at King.
"Yeah, who cares?" said King, yawning.
"Alright, here you go," said Danielle, placing King down on the couch. "A growing boy needs his sleep."
"And his treats," said King, peeking an eye open and staring at Danielle, making her giggle slightly.
"Is there anything we can do?" asked Luz, staring at Eda.
"There is one way, but it's terribly dangerous and partially illegal," said Eda, before staring at Luz. "So, you're in the right place! I'll send you into her mind to fix the damage."
"Be still my fantasy loving heart, I have always wanted to do this!" said Luz, putting her hands in prayer. "Thank you, Boiling Isles."
"It won't be easy. You have a lot to fix in there, 'cause it's a mess! Yep, whoever did this to Willow showed unbelievable disregard for her safety, downright despicable," said Eda, before looking at Amity. "Oh, right, it was you."
"O-ow," thought Danielle, a slight headache occurring before the center of her forehead sparks before a glow encompasses her before turning into sparkles heading towards Willow's mind.
"Well, that just happened," said Eda, staring at what just transpired before looking at Luz. "Anyways, Luz, who's going inside with you? And also retrieve Danielle."
"Maybe I can help! I'm pretty good at getting stuck inside people's heads!" said Hooty, opening the door.
"This is someone's brain, not a night club!" said Eda, using a spell to close the door then holding up two fingers. "Two max."
"I'm running out of time. Ugh. I'm in total free fall!" said Gus, before peering at a certain stack of books. "Must I turn to forbidden sources? Aah!"
"Gus... has a lot on his plate," said Luz, looking at Gus than Amity. "Amity, you have to go with me."
"Willow might not want me in there," said Amity, staring off to the side.
"You set everything in there on fire!" said Luz, pointing at Willow. "You have to help."
"Okay, I'll do what I can," said Amity, hesitantly taking Luz's offered hand.
"Alright! Bold choice, taking the girl who caused the mess," said Eda, summoning a bell in Luz's hand while casting a spell under their feet.
"Whoa," said Luz, holding the bell.
"When you're done, ring that and I'll cast you back… Oh, and keep an eye out for her Inner Willow. She's the gatekeeper of emotions and memory. She might help ya," said Eda, lifting her hand and the spell circle producing a light sending Luz and Willow towards Willow's mind.
Once inside Willow's mind, Luz and Amity look around. Turns out Willow's mind was a vast forest with picture frames knotted into them. Danielle was sitting by a tree when Luz and Amity appeared.
"Yo," said Danielle, giving a two-finger salute.
"Danielle!" said Luz, seeing Danielle walk their way.
"Where's her Inner Willow?" asked Amity, walking around. "Do you really think it'll help?"
"Inner Willow?" said Danielle, staring at Amity. "Like her subconscious?"
"I don't know. We'll just have to start fixing stuff on our own! Hmm, now let's see..." said Luz, touching a picture frame than poking it, seeing her hand go through. "Hey, I found something magical. I'mma put my face in it!"
"Luz, I'm not sure that's a good idea," said Danielle, seeing Luz enter the picture.
"Luz? Luz!" said Amity, not seeing Luz around.
"Right there," said Danielle, pointing at a picture and sighing.
"I think I found the memories," said Luz, peering out of the picture and dragging Amity and Danielle in.
"Eep," said Danielle, landing in the picture and looking around. "Are you two, okay?"
"Yup," replied Luz, standing up. "And welcome to Willow's beautiful... memory?"
"Willow's… memories," said Danielle, seeing the damaged environment. "Is this how the flames damaged her memories?"
"Lake Lacuna! This is where Willow and I took swimming lessons! The ash must be from the fires. Our fort! In the dunes!" said Amity, noticing a fort nearby. "One time Willow wanted to play hooky from our swim lessons, so we built this!"
"You actually played hooky, said Danielle, staring at Amity. "Never pegged you as the type."
"Forts, hooky, Willow," said Luz, holding a plank. "Can words get any cuter?"
"We knew the swim teacher would be on the prowl, but Willow said she'd protect us with an illusion spell," said Amity, looking at the fort with pride.
"Wha? It's like a little dog house for angels!" said Luz, staring at the fort.
"Wait, but something is missing," said Amity, really looking at the fort.
"Is it this?" asked Danielle, picking up a tiny flag and handing it to Amity.
"Yes," replied Amity, smiling and placing the flag on the fort. "There."
"What just…" said Danielle, seeing them back in the forest.
"We're back!" said Amity, looking around.
"I think fixing the fort fixed the memory!" said Luz, staring at the picture which was now colored.
"I'd say split up and fix the memories," said Danielle, watching the young versions of Willow and Amity playing. "But I think Amity would be key to fixing them… so, no splitzies."
"Point taken," said Amity, staring at the memory. "Willow was a... late bloomer."
"I know, but now she's more like a great bloomer! This place is like a theater showing her most important moments! Now, let's fix some more!" said Luz, running over to a birthday memory. "The photo that started it all! Let's do it next."
"Wait! Uhh. You want important moments?" said Amity, gesturing to an awkward hair day memory. "This one might be about a crush!"
"Amity…" thought Danielle, looking at Amity suspiciously. "What is she hiding from us?"
"Hmm, don't mind if I do!" said Luz, laughing while entering the photo.
"Oh Luz," said Danielle, following right behind Luz.
Meanwhile outside of Willow's mind, in the owl house, Gus is still trying to figure what to do about his assignment.
"No one can give me the interview I need, except... myself!" said Gus, creating an illusion of himself.
"I'd rather die than expose my secrets!" said the Illusionary Gus, taking a fighting pose.
"Then die, you shall!" said Gus, rolling up his sleeves.
"Ahem. If you need an interview, look no further," said Eda, staring at Gus. "Interesting? I'm a bad girl living in a secret fortress."
"I'm the secret!" said Hooty, crashing through the window.
"Shh!" said Eda, shushing Hooty then floating over towards Gus and pointing at her wanted poster. "Noteworthy? I'm public enemy number one. Accomplished? I'm the greatest witch who ever lived!"
"What do you think?" asked Gus, looking at his illusionary self.
"I think not!" said King, bursting through the illusionary Gus's chest and startling Gus. "If you're handing out attention, I deserve it. Nyeh!"
"I will choose one of you, but which one?" said Gus, staring at Eda and King.
Back in Willow's mind, Luz, Amity and Danielle slowly fix up Willow's memories. From playing on the swings with her dads. To another with Amity and Willow reading 13+ romance books in the library only to be chased away by a librarian. To an amusement park riding a roller coaster.
"I don't feel so good!" said Young Willow, screaming on the coaster.
"Ooo," said Danielle, covering her mouth. "I do not know how that feels but that sounds awful."
"We don't need to see how this one ends..." said Luz, turning the photo around.
"Yeah, Willow threw up a lot that day," said Amity, smiling slightly. "That's when you knew she was havin' fun."
"Ew... I mean, aw!" said Luz, only to see Amity downcast. "Hey, you, okay?"
"Yeah, I just... I can't believe I almost erased all of this," said Amity, looking at the memory. "I really messed things up."
"Making mistakes is a part of life," said Danielle, rubbing Amity's back. "As long as we learn from it, we can fix it."
"Don't worry. We've gotten really good at fixing memories! I won't rest until we've got this all sorted out," said Luz, staring at Amity. "Repeat after me: We can fix this together! Come on!"
"We can fix this together," said Amity, smiling and blushing.
"That's good," said Danielle, glad that Amity was cheering up some.
"Heck yeah we can!" said Luz, staring at Amity. "I know some of these memories must be painful for you, but what happened to you guys? And why are you trying to hide it?"
"I just..." said Amity, gasping when seeing a pink monster step out from behind a tree. "What's that?"
"Oh mio," said Danielle, seeing the pink monster as well.
"Look, if you don't wanna talk about it, just say so," said Luz, seeing nothing and walking away.
"No, I actually saw something!" said Amity, rubbing the side of her head. "At least I... I think I did."
"I saw it too Amity," said Danielle, staring at Amity.
"If you need me, I shall be fixing this memory of a ball pit," said Luz, jumping into another memory.
"Wait, that's not…" said Amity, about to stop Luz.
"It's eggs! It's full of eggs!" said Luz, poking her head out with an eggshell on her head. "Why is this memory full of eggs?!"
"Puzza," said Danielle, slightly laughing while pinching her nose. "Perché puzza?"
"Yeah, that one's hard to explain," said Amity, running over with Danielle.
Back in the owl house, a table with chairs were placed. Eda was sitting down while King looked at himself in a hand mirror.
"Just give up, King, 'cause I got this," said Eda, arms crossed over her chest.
"You got nothing," said King, fluffing up his fur. "No one could turn down an interview with someone this pretty! Danielle has awesome products."
"If you want this interview, you're gonna have to start answering some tough questions," said Gus, turning the lights off and holding a light spell, approaching Eda and King. "Where were you born? What'd you eat for breakfast this morning? What's your greatest strength?"
"My decisiveness," replied King, being blinded by the light spell. "W-Wa-Wait, I changed my mind!"
"This will be the single greatest interview of all time. So, if you want it, you'll have to dazzle me!" said Gus, turning the light spell into multiple orbs.
"The kid scares me," said Eda, staring at Gus than King.
Back in Willow's mind, the girls and Amity were able to fix the memory with the eggs. While Luz was trying to get an eggshell of her head, Danielle was wiping goop off of her.
"I'm going to need to shower tonight," said Danielle, taking some goop off her hair. "A long one."
"We're getting pretty good at fixing these," said Amity, looking at the girls.
"Phew!" said Luz, getting the eggshell off and tossing it. "Yeah. And there's only one last memory to fix! The one you're suspiciously avoiding."
"Me? Avoid? No. But let's skip it!" said Amity, running towards Luz. "Where's Eda's bell?"
"All of Willow's memories need to be fixed," said Danielle, staring at Amity.
"Amity, you gotta stop being weird. We have to fix all of them. Unless... there's something in there you don't want me to see," said Luz, seeing Amity cross her arms defensively. "Look, I'm not here to judge, I'm just here to help Willow."
"Is that…" said Danielle, smelling smoke. "It is… smoke."
"Help? All you're doing is prying into your friends lives!" said Amity, pointing at Luz. "Well, did you ever think maybe it's none of your business?"
"Guys," said Danielle, trying to get Amity and Luz's attention. "We have a problem."
"Is something... burning?" asked Amity, smelling the smoke as well as Luz before seeing the memories aflame.
"Look!" said Luz, seeing the monster finally and it running towards them.
"Hide, hide, hide!" said Amity, grabbing Luz and hiding behind a tree, Danielle following suite.
"No," said Danielle, seeing it burn the recent memory they fixed. "We just fixed that memory."
"Oh no!" said Luz, staring at Amity. "That thing is burning up all the memories!"
"Please call Eda, I don't wanna be here when it comes out!" said Amity, seeing Luz grab the bell and ringing it.
"But what about Willow's memories?" asked Danielle, staring at Amity and Luz then the memories before hearing something. "Why am I hearing a lot of bells?"
"Why won't she answer?" asked Amity, grabbing the bell and ringing it herself.
"Yeah... she's not super reliable," replied Luz, staring at Amity.
"Run!" shouted Luz, seeing the flames increase.
"All our hard work," said Danielle, seeing the monster going from memory to memory.
"Why is it destroying all the photos?" asked Amity, seeing another memory go aflame.
"Is there a pattern?" said Danielle, looking at the memories it was destroying and ones it was leaving alone. "Wait a minute… it's going after ones with Amity in it."
"I don't know. That one hasn't been burned, or that one!" said Luz, seeing the pattern as well. "Amity, that thing isn't after any photo. It's after you!"
"What?" shouted Amity, seeing the monster come their way.
"Run! I have an idea!" said Luz, gesturing to the beach memory.
"Douse it," said Danielle, getting what Luz wanted to do and jumping into the memory.
"We can't go in there, I'm in there!" said Amity, pointing at the memory.
"Just trust me!" said Luz, jumping into the picture and drawing the ice glyph in the sand. "Time for a swimming lesson!"
Luz slams the ice glyph, conjuring an ice pillar. The flame monster jumps through and lands on the ice pillar as it grows. Danielle conjures a blast of water to help push the flame monster into Lake Lacuna.
"Woo! Teamwork, baby!" said Luz, hugging a blushing Amity.
"Yay," said Danielle, weakly at seeing Luz hug Amity.
"Luz," said Amity, seeing a shadow stand in the lake covered by fog before revealing Willow with pink flames around her. "Are you... the Inner Willow?"
"I was. Love, sadness, fear," said Inner Willow, her eyes going purple and burning the sand as she walks closer to Amity and the girls. "I used to be a being made of all emotions. But ever since you set Willow's mind on fire, all I can feel is anger!"
"Oh mio," said Danielle, seeing trees being ignited. "Please calm down! This isn't right and you know it!"
"You're…" said Inner Willow, staring at Danielle.
"Please! Stop!" said Luz, staring at Inner Willow.
"But Amity wanted this," said Inner Willow, bringing forth the birthday memory. "Every moment she touched, I'm going to burn."
"You're just hurting Willow," said Amity, staring at Inner Willow. "Why are you doing this?"
"Still haven't figured it out yet? Then I'll show you!" said Inner Willow, grabbing Amity and tossing her into the memory before looking at Luz. "You wanted to know everything, right? Then come take a trip down memory lane."
"You're saying it all creepy, but I like the sound of… whoa!" said Luz, being tossed into the memory.
"Amity! Luz!" shouted Danielle, before staring at Inner Willow. "Look I'll go in, just don't toss me."
"I wouldn't dream of it Lady Light," said Willow, confusing Danielle.
"What?" said Danielle, backing up. "Uh no, my name is Danielle. Not Light. Where'd you even think I was Light?"
"All living being know who are you deep in their subconscious," replied Inner Willow, extending a hand to Danielle. "It's the animals and the land who are more aware. Even the universe itself."
Grabbing Inner Willow's hand, Danielle is pulled along into the birthday memory. Landing softly in the memory, Danielle runs over and checks on Luz and Amity.
"Are you two, okay?" asked Danielle, checking them for injuries.
"We're fine," replied Amity, staring at Danielle.
"You said I was hurting Willow?" said Inner Willow, setting the memory off. "I was just finishing what you started!"
"Huh…" said Danielle, seeing the bedroom door open.
"You have to get out, Willow, now!" said Young Amity, walking into the room.
"Wait, why?" asked Young Willow, staring at Young Amity.
"Because… because…" said Young Amity, not finding the words.
"Is it because I still can't do magic?" asked Young Willow, grabbing Young Amity's hand. "Amity, I'm—I'm sorry I got us in trouble at the beach, I just… I can't get the spells right."
"Well, yes, that… that is why!" said Young Amity, pulling her hand away. "Because you're a weakling! You can't do magic so I don't wanna be your friend. Now, go!"
"Oh Willow," thought Danielle, covering her mouth as she watches the memory before her, tears pricking the corner of her eyes, wanting to give Young Willow a hug.
"Then you let your new friends pick on her for years. All because you thought she was weak," said Inner Willow, floating before her eyes go black. "Well, now I can erase all that pain. After all, out of sight, out of mind."
"Amity!" shouted the girls, seeing a circle of fire around Amity's feet.
"Wait! Please," said Amity, the flames disappearing. "Before all this started, there… there was something else."
"Now what?" thought Danielle, seeing the bedroom door opening and seeing a Young Amity with two silhouettes nearby. "Amity's parents?"
"Amity?" said the Man, looming over Young Amity.
"What is Willow doing here? She wasn't on the guest list for a reason," said the Woman, staring at Young Amity.
"But, she's… she's my best friend!" said Young Amity, surprising Inner Willow.
"Nonsense, Blights only associate with the strongest of witchlings," said the Man, a young Boscha and Skara appearing nearby. "You can choose a new friend from one of the suitable companions we invited."
"But they're mean!" said Young Amity, crossing her arms over her chest and looking away. "Just because you work with their parents doesn't mean I have to like them!"
"Good children don't squabble, dear. Sever your ties with Willow, and if you don't..." said the Woman, staring at Young Amity.
"Then we will," said the Man, making Young Amity gasp.
"We'll make sure the girl is never admitted into Hexside. Now go, and try not to make a scene," said the Woman, as the memory stops.
"Your parents?" asked Danielle, staring at Amity who nodded yes.
"Willow, you were never too weak to be my friend. I was too weak to be yours. I can't take back what I've done, but I can promise you this," said Amity, taking Skara's invitation out and about to tear it. "I won't let Boscha and her gang pick on you ever again! I'm not actually gonna rip it because it's a real butterfly, but you get the gesture, right?"
"I do," said Inner Willow, grabbing Amity's hand. "I think Willow should keep her memories of you. The good, and the bad."
"Me too," said Amity, full of emotion.
"All right," said Danielle, staring at Amity and Inner Willow, smiling. "Now hug it out."
"Then, if it's okay, Amity, Danielle and I still have some work to do," said Luz, watching the two hug.
Inner Willow nods. The three of them put their heads together. A flash of light later, they're back in the main forest of Willow's mind. Luz hands Amity the repaired birthday photo. Amity hangs it in the tree. Young Inner Willow runs behind them, making them turn around. Inner Willow walks out from behind a tree, no longer surrounded by pink flames, holding Young Inner Willow's hand. Amity waves at them. Luz is ugly crying. Young Inner Willow turns to leave and walks face-first into a tree. Danielle walks forward and brushes Young Willow's hair back and gives her a hug. She giggles and runs off. Inner Willow waves and follows her.
"So, does this mean you and Willow are buddies again?" asked Luz, staring at Amity.
"I'm not sure," replied Amity, staring at Luz.
"At least this is a step forward in repairing that bridge," said Danielle, looking at Amity. "Take it slow, don't rush. You'll become even better friends by the end of it."
"Thanks," said Amity, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Well, why don't we go see?" asked Luz, pulling out the bell and ringing it.
"Looks like I'm leaving the way I came in," said Danielle, seeing a sparkly glow around her. "See you back outside."
Back at the owl house, Eda and King had gone through numerous routines to garner Gus's favor. Stuff littered the floor as Gus tried to figure who to choose.
"So? Who got the gig, kid?" asked Eda, staring at Gus.
"Well, this has been the hardest choice of my entire life. But with the public interest in mind, the interview goes to..." said Gus, before pausing dramatically. "Hooty!"
"Hooty?" said both Eda and King, flabbergasted.
"Hoot?" said Hooty, opening the door.
"Well, your performances got me thinking. What could create such interesting people?" asked Gus, before gesturing to the owl house. "Only the Owl House itself."
"Aaaaah!" said Hooty, thrilled.
"Tell me everything, Mr. Hooty!" said Gus, staring at Hooty.
"Whoa," said Danielle, reappearing in the owl house. "What happened here?"
"I've been waiting to hear those words all my life!" said Hooty, closing the door as Gus follows him outside. "Where to begin? It all started with a hunt. Blood red skies. That's right, I was..."
"Ooooh, I'm gonna do it," said Eda, glaring at the door. "I'm gonna bake that bird in a pie!"
"Yeah, I won't be eating that," said Danielle, sitting on the couch and making sure Willow was okay.
"I'm gonna bake that kid into a pie!" said King, before hearing a bell.
"Huh?" said Eda, before looking at Willow. "Oh, right, I put people in there."
"Yes, you did," said Danielle, seeing Eda bring Luz and Amity back.
"Whoa. What went down here?" asked Luz, staring around the place before looking at Eda. "And where's Gus? What did you do with Gus?"
"The kid's fine. He's just dead to us," said Eda, walking away grumpy with King.
"Aaaaw, I love that little walk of his," said Danielle, watching King walk away on all fours.
"Those are very mixed messages," said Luz, confused before looking at Willow waking up. "Willow! Do you know who I am?"
"A friendly scarecrow?" replied Willow, sitting up. "Ha! Just messing, I remember everything!"
"Oh, I'm so glad," said Danielle, hugging Willow.
"She's back, folks! My girl's back!" said Luz, running over and hugging Willow. "I'm gonna hug you so hard you'll never forget me again!"
"I remember what you did too," said Willow, seeing Amity about to leave. "What you did in there. I can't say we're friends, but it's... a start."
"Hold on," said Danielle, rushing into the kitchen and coming back with a cookie tin. "Here, for all the help."
"Thanks," said Amity, before leaving.
"Luz, question: how did Amity happen to see the photo I hid in class?" asked Willow, staring at Luz.
"You said nothing about shenanigans..." said Luz, smirking.
"My first word was hoot. My second word was hoot-hoot. My third word…" said Hooty, still talking to Gus outside.
"Hooty, you gotta stay on track here, buddy!" said Gus, trying to keep Hooty on track.
"Here's a song I wrote!" said Hooty, beginning to sing. "Bored bored bored, bored bored bored."
"Ah!" said Gus, throwing his notepad and pencil on the ground and walking away. "I can't take this anymore!"
"Here a hoot, there a hoot, somewhere else a hoot hoot, hooty-hoot hoot!" said Hooty, still singing and hearing Danielle giggling to his tune.
After Willow had left and having dinner, Danielle confronted Eda, King, and Luz. Hesitantly rubbing her arm, Danielle looks at the three.
"Can you guys please never go into my memories," said Danielle, staring at Eda, King and Luz. "I really don't want you guys to see my memories."
"Danielle, if there is ever a time like what happened with Willow," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "We'll have to go in and fix things."
"Please, don't!" said Danielle, pulling her arm in. "I don't want my memories seen. Please understand. Don't go in my head!"
"Alright, alright, yeesh," said Eda, heading towards the living room.
After they agreed to never go in her mind, Danielle called it a night and showered before heading to bed. Falling asleep, Danielle appears at the crossroads.
"Aster," said Danielle, spotting Aster and seeing him clutch his head. "Are-are you okay?"
"He-headache," replied Aster, calming down after Danielle rubbed his head. "Thanks. How was your day?"
"Fine then… crazy," replied Danielle, looking at Aster. "Had to go into Willow's mind after her memories were burned."
"What?" said Aster, not liking what he was hearing.
"It's a long story," said Danielle, looking at Aster. "Is everything okay?"
"I don't like mind dives," said Aster, before counting on his fingers. "One: Permission. Two: Forced. Three: The mind is too far gone and access is easy. Those are the ways to get into someone's mind. There's another one… but… I can't think."
"It's okay," said Danielle, pulling Aster into a hug and rubbing his head.
"Promise me you won't go in my head," said Aster, looking at Danielle and holding his pinky finger out. "Promise!"
"Prometto," said Danielle, wrapping her pinky finger with Aster's pinky finger. "Also, can you stay out of mine as well?"
"Prometto," said Aster, leaning into Danielle's hug. "I'm going to stay a little longer."
"When you're ready to leave," said Danielle, staring at Aster. "I'll take you out."
Owl Pellet #11
(Set after Ch. 11)
A lot of running was heard about in the owl house. From one room to the next, Danielle is chasing King.
"King, this isn't funny," said Danielle, stepping side to side as King dodges her behind a chair. "You need a bath."
"You won't take me," said King, laughing as he dodges Danielle yet again as he slides under the couch and pushes Danielle over the couch.
"Eep! Ow!" said Danielle, falling on the floor.
"Danielle…" said King, seeing no movement and checking on Danielle. "Danielle… aaah!"
"Nice try… ow," said Danielle, standing up and picking King up. "But you're getting that bath."
"You can't make me!" shouted King, struggling in Danielle's arms as she heads towards the bath. "You're going to make me smell all girly."
"There's nothing wrong with the products I brought out of my bag," said Danielle, putting King in the bathtub filled with hot sudsy water. "There we go."
"I don't like this," said King, trying to get out of the bath.
"Here," said Danielle, grabbing King's rubber ducky before singing. "Rubber Ducky, you're so fine. You make bath time lots of fun."
"Yes," shouted King, taking rubber ducky and letting Danielle give him a bath.
Owl Pellet #12
(Set after Ch. 11)
Searching the owl house, Danielle tries looking for a specific manga she had recently pulled out to read for old time's sake.
"Where is it? Where is it?" said Danielle, lifting a pillow off the couch. "I don't want anyone to see that specific one."
"Looking for this?" asked Eda, holding up the manga.
"Eep!" squeaked Danielle, blushing red as a tomato.
"Didn't peg you for this kinda stuff," said Eda, reading through the manga.
"I can explain!" said Danielle, looking at Eda.
"I have no problem with this," said Eda, handing the manga back. "Just keep it in your room. Don't want King to see this. I am so not ready for that talk."
"You have no problem with me reading this in your house?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda.
"Nope," replied Eda, ruffling Danielle's hair.
