Catching Up

Shinji wanted to start at the bottom of the gym hierarchy and decided to travel to the Santalune City Gym to get his first badge. It wasn't too far a journey to get to Santalune City, but he enjoyed the fact that he was finding some interesting new Pokémon that he couldn't find anywhere else. In the last two days traveling between Lumiose City and Santalune City, he had found two Pokémon that were unexpected finds: A Skiddo and Litleo, a Grass-Type and Fire-Type, respectively.

"Leo and Otona," Hikari suggested for their nicknames when Shinji caught them.

I guess astronomy isn't too bad, thought Shinji as he set a bowl down for his Litleo at the Pokémon Center in Santalune City. And with Otona, that's mainly because when it evolves, it'll be fully grown. But how did a Litleo travel all the way from where it normally dwells to near this city where it shouldn't be?

Another thing Shinji had to take into consideration was the age of the Litleo; based on just its height and weight, it couldn't have been no more than a year old, give or take a month or two, and if it has built up its stamina and endurance to travel from one place to the next, it could've been up a considerable level.

"Eee!" He heard Misato yell at him, and he was reminded that it was dinnertime and he had to feed his Pokémon.

"Right, sorry, Misato," he apologized, and brought her bowl to her.

He had already fed his Gyarados and still had to feed his Charizard.

"Whoa, Shinji," went Kensuke as he looked up Litleo's evolved on Shinji's Pokédex. "If you caught a male Litleo, then its evolved form, Pyroar, is a beast destined to be king."

"What's its full height on average?" Shinji asked him as he set down another bowl for Otona.

"Four feet and eleven inches, but some have grown to six feet and eight inches."

"Like Pokémon raised in the wild, reaching sizes sometimes not achieved when being trained."

"What about those Charizard from that valley in Johto?" Toji asked them, laying on one of the bunkbeds. "Aren't they huge?"

"Bigger than any Charizard I've seen raised by other trainers," Shinji stated; even his own Charizard, despite his efforts in bringing out her true strength, wasn't as huge as other Charizard likely were in the wild.

He stepped out of the Pokémon Center to the battlefield behind it where his Charizard was waiting. Or so he thought, as he found the field empty.

"Now, where'd she go?" He wondered, looking around for her. "Asuka! Asuka!"

Flare! A flame attack from above got on his head, leaving small burns on his face.

"I wonder what I did to her to deserve that?" He suspected as he looked up at the night sky, seeing her flying under the light of the moon. "Whatever I've done to offend you, I apologize, Asuka! Please, come down and eat!"

She flew down and sat on the ground and he gave her a large bowl of food.

"Grah-rah-rah!" She chuckled at him.

"Heh-heh-heh, very funny, Asuka. Should you face the Santalune Gym Leader or should I have Leo step in and show what he's capable of?"

"Gaarh!" Asuka growled; she had nothing against a newly-caught Pokémon showing what it was capable of, as she had shown what she was capable of.

Shinji chuckled as he guessed he had to decide on his Eevee and Litleo against the Santalune Gym Leader's Bug Pokémon.

Ash looked at his badge case, counting the ones he had and the ones he still needed to enter the Kalos League. He still needed two more badges…and yet he still couldn't help but wonder what Shinji was up to.

"Pika," his Pikachu went.

"It's nothing," he lied; even if the Kalos League was still months away and he was still two badges away, he wanted to be at his best for when he met with Shinji and faced him.

-x-

"…I've been hearing about you for quite some time now," went Viola to Shinji the next day after they met for the first time, seeing that he was exactly as she was told by some gym leaders from the other regions.

"I hope it's been all nice and subtle," said Shinji as he and Misato prepared to face her.

"With someone like you, an impressive Pokémon Trainer that has been said to exceed all expectations, you can't expect to hear nothing but nice things about your achievements."

It was to be a two-on-two battle, meaning Shinji would use his Eevee and Litleo against whichever Bug Pokémon Viola would use to impede them from winning the match.

"Do your best, Shinji!" He heard Rei cheer for him.

"You're the man, Shinji!" Toji added.

"We got this, Misato," he told his Eevee with a smile.

"Eevo!" She agreed with him.

Viola threw out a Poké Ball and it released her first choice. It was a Surskit, a Bug/Water-Type, but this one looked different from the few Shinji had faced in the past, like it was set to do something unexpected.

"Uh, no offense, ma'am, but your Surskit looks odd," Shinji stated to Viola.

"Yeah, it's been through some tough skirmishes and has gained a great deal of experience," she explained why it looked off.

Flash! Her Surskit glowed bright blue and levitated off the ground.

"Well, it wouldn't be much of a match if there was no effort thrown in, eh, Misato?" Shinji asked his Eevee.

"Eee," she responded; they were used to unexpected results that she practically didn't expect any battle with another trainer to be predictable.

"Uh, did that Pokémon perform some sort of attack before the match began?" Fuyutsuki asked from the sidelines.

"No," Maya explained, "it just evolved. That's Masquerain, the Eyeball Pokémon."

-x-

Once they made it to Anistar City, Ash looked forward to facing the Gym Leader Olympia, who specialized in Psychic-Type Pokémon, which would earn him his seventh badge.

"Say, is that the Anistar Sundial?" Bonnie asked Clemont as she pointed to the strange, crystal structure by the water. "That big rock over there?"

"Yeah, that's the one," he responded. "Some believe that it holds information on finding Mega Stones throughout the region."

"Amazing," went Serena. "I heard it's beautiful to look at during the night."

Even Ash had to admit that it was nice to look at…even if only for a while.

-x-

"…Rrah!" Leo grunted as Viola's Masquerain fell to the ground, burned by a Flamethrower and Fire Fang. "Rrah!"

After Misato got hit with a Signal Beam and needed to recoup, Shinji switched her out for Leo, which had been a smart move since the new Pokémon was rearing for combat experience…and managed to land several blows with Masquerain, despite the latter knowing Ice Beam and Protect, neither of which kept him from advancing forward.

"Whoa, Leo," went Hikari as she saw the little guy stand proud. "You're stronger than I thought you were."

"Maybe too strong," said Asuka, wondering just how strong the Lion Cub Pokémon truly was.

"Can't argue with its fury, though," added Toji.

With Masquerain no longer able to battle, Viola recalled it back into its Poké Ball and took out another one.

"You're good against a Pokémon you're familiar with from a previous region," she told Shinji, "but let's see how you fare against one from this region. Come on out, Vivillon!"

From out her second Poké Ball, a different Pokémon emerged from the light it released. It resembled a butterfly, but was black, gray and purplish in its colorations. And, based only on Shinji's perception of it, it had to be an extremely strong Bug-Type Pokémon for Viola to save it for last; most trainers saved their strongest for last while some, wanting to intimidate, would start with their strongest first.

"Eee?" Misato spoke to Shinji, shrugging off her confusion a little.

"Yep," he responded, taking out his Pokédex and looking up the new creature.

"Vivillon, the Scale Pokémon," it registered. "Skillfully able to locate water sources, it is believed that if you follow one, you will always be able to locate a spring. Vivillon is the final evolved form of Scatterbug."

"That's more than I expected to hear," Shinji expressed, knowing more than what he had intended to about the Scale Pokémon, learning that it was a Bug/Flying-Type, the same as several other Bug Pokémon he had faced in the past. "Can you still go on, Leo?"

"Rarrh!" Leo roared in response; he still wanted to fight.

"Okay, then, let's continue!"

"Begin!" The referee declared, and the second match began.

"Vivillon, use Sleep Powder!" Viola ordered.

"Counter with Flamethrower, Leo!" Shinji told Leo.

Vivillon flapped its wings, releasing a shower of blue particles that began to spread across the battlefield.

Leo released his Flamethrower and incinerated the particles before they could ever make contact with him.

"Go now, use Hyper Voice!" Shinji yelled, and that made his friends cover their ears.

"Raarh!" Leo growled, and then inhaled. "RRRRRRAAARUGH!"

The Hyper Voice was intense, louder than they had expected it to be, and it made Vivillon fall to the ground like a fly that had been swatted in midair.

"Oh!" Viola gasped, not expecting that Litleo to know such a move…or have it so powerful. He really is a powerful Pokémon Trainer. He may be more powerful than even he realizes.

Her Vivillon was completely dazed, its eyes blank from the attack; there was no it could continue after taking on such an attack.

"Vivillon is unable to continue," the referee declare. "Victory goes to the visiting challenger, Shinji Ikari."

"Whoa," Shinji looked at Leo, who seemed pleased with the results of the match. I may need to keep a closer watch on you, Leo. You may be stronger than I anticipated you to be.

"Well done, Mr. Ikari," Viola congratulated him. "That was a fast match. Your Litleo is also impressive in its abilities."

"Thank you," Shinji responded, bowing his head to her. "I really enjoyed our first gym match of this region."

"You'll go far here. Here's the Bug Badge."

The badge resembled a brown beetle with green eyes, and Shinji accepted it from Viola's right hand, raising it over his head.

"It's beautiful," he expressed, and then lowered to show it to Misato and Leo. "We did it, y'all. We got our first badge of the Kalos Region."

"Eevo!" Misato praised.

"Rrarh!" Leo growled.

"Congratulations, Shinji!" Asuka praised the trainer.

"You're the best, Shinji!" Toji added.

"Well done, Shinji," Rei told him.

They went to the sundial first, taking time to get to explore the city before going to the Anistar Gym so Ash could face the Gym Leader. There was no need to rush, as it would be a few months before the Kalos League began. So they had time to relax for a period and even train their Pokémon for future matches. And it wasn't like their adversaries were in a hurry to go anywhere, either.

-x-

Because he was starting from the bottom, Shinji's next badge would be in Cyllage City, where the Gym Leader, Grant, specialized in Rock-Type Pokémon. Getting to Cyllage City would be a few days, but Shinji was in no hurry; he wasn't going to repeat his actions that led to his mental fatigue back in Unova. He could relax on the way to the next city, meeting new people and finding new Pokémon to learn about and capture.

"I think at this point," he told his friends as they walked down the path leading away from Santalune City, "we should look for new Pokémon."

"In this forest?" Hikari asked him. "What Pokémon could we find here that you haven't seen anywhere else in the other regions?"

Suddenly, her question was answered when a small bird landed atop her head.

"Fletchling," it chirped, surprising the girl.

"Aah!" She gasped, waving her arms around to get it off herself.

The bird flew off and perched on a nearby tree branch.

"Way to go, Hikari," Misato praised the girl. "You found a Pokémon that we haven't seen from the other region."

Shinji took out his Pokédex and held it up to look up the unknown bird.

"Fletchling," it revealed, "the Tiny Robin Pokémon. Fletchling are persistent in battle when encountered in their territory. The chirping of a Fletchling is said to be beautiful to listen to."

"Looks like it's going to be a good day," Shinji expressed as his Eevee got ready to face the Fletchling. "How many people like tiny robins?"

-x-

"How many people love tiny robins, indeed," Antonio stated as he looked at Shinji and the others as the Fletchling chirped louder, and was accompanied by several more, totaling up to twelve of them. "Whoa."

"Beware the fascination of Pokémon," went Palkia as he observed the situation they were in.

But Shinji just smiled as he held up an empty Poké Ball in his right hand.

"The more, the merrier," he expressed as his Eevee jumped up and unleashed several stars from her tail.

Sakura Suzuhara re-watched the posted video where Shinji had fought and captured the Tao Trio of Dragon Pokémon, and then watched him catch the colossal Dragonite. She was impressed by her brother's friend's ability to face Pokémon that much larger than people were and refusing to back down, even when it seemed unlikely that he'd be able to win. Not only that, but the Pokémon he had with him were just as amazing, like his Regigigas or Rayquaza, Legendary Pokémon that were more powerful than regular Pokémon. She had hope that when Shinji did find his way back to their world, he would bring back many Pokémon with him and restore the planet.

"How are you doing today, Sakura?" She heard the voice of her brother as she looked at the entrance to the room she was in, seeing him and his lady friend with the pigtails and freckles.

"Hey, big brother," she greeted. "How was Shinji?"

"He beat his first Gym Leader of the Kalos Region and won his first badge to gain entry into the Kalos League, which we learned is five-six months away."

"It'll be that long before he can get to the league?"

"That's right, Sakura," Hikari explained. "Unfortunately, what we discovered that power outages accelerate time spent there, but we don't want to risk anything bad happening to people when they go to see Shinji. But the people responsible for monitoring Shinji's ventures in the Pokémon world will keep watch over him and try to find alternative, safer ways to progress time. Until then, we have plenty of time…and Shinji's in no rush. Remember what happened to him when he felt rushed and had to take a large break from traveling when we met him again in Unova?"

"Oh, yeah, he had that 'dumbo'-mania thing."

"Heh-heh-heh," Toji chuckled; even he had explained it to Sakura, she couldn't pronounce the word properly.

"Yeah," Hikari responded, "that's what happened to Shinji because he felt he was in a hurry to get back here. Now that he knows that he's not being rushed by anyone that has his best interests at heart, he can work towards the goal of returning here at his own pace."

"Did he catch any new Pokémon?" Sakura wanted to know.

"He caught a few new Pokémon," Toji answered her. "One of the strongest Kalos Region Pokémon he currently has is a Litleo, a, uh…lion cub with a fiery temper."

"Litleo? Is that a…Fire-Type Pokémon?"

"Totally. And he caught a Grass-Type Pokémon called Skiddo. It's basically…a little goat with a grass or bush-like mane that people can ride because it has a mild temperament. Eventually, it'll evolve into a Pokémon called Gogoat. And then, he caught a flock of Fletchling, a little bird that is definitely a robin."

"Ugh," Hikari shuddered, remembering the flock that made Shinji put in the effort to catch all twelve of them.

"Horaki-Chan?" Sakura questioned.

"Fletchling," she explained her discomfort, "they were small, but they were tough, scary and had attitude when defending their territory. Shinji didn't let their aggressive deter him. He caught them and gained the respect of the leader."

"Are there other Pokémon that frighten you?"

"A few, just the ones that are…were originally not as friendly in the beginning. There was an Ursaring Shinji had caught that was completely unfriendly and had to be watched by several other Pokémon Shinji had caught that served as guards for other Pokémon that were caught by other trainers that don't bother anyone. And then, there are the Tao Trio and Woobat. They were scary at first."

"I like Reshiram. It looks cute. More like a bird than a dragon."

"Zekrom," Toji gave his preference. "A force of nature."

"Shinji's Eevee," Hikari told them, "the cutest of them all."

It would be a few days before they all went back to the facility to go hang with Shinji, but Rei felt that it would be too long due to needing to recover from the barbiturates that enabled them to enter medically-induced comas for days at a time. As she walked up the steps of her building to reach her apartment, the albino began to feel uncomfortable, and it wasn't due to the slight chill of the afternoon breeze while the sun began to set. She looked down the hall towards her unit…and got the feeling that her place wasn't where she should be right now. So, she turned around and ran as fast as her legs could take her, away from the building and towards a different refuge from the night.

She was fortunate that she had decided against returning to her apartment, for within it, waiting for her to return…was Gendo himself, angry and wanting to know why she, of all the people he knew in NERV, would up and betray him, time after time, just to spend a few days at a time in a coma, to see some brat that held no other value beyond his usefulness as an Eva pilot. Once he had understood why she would choose his son over his own scenario, he would make sure she was…corrected.

Even when he's not here, he changes everything by running around in that pathetic, other dimension, he thought, sitting in her kitchen. He's not even trying to get back! He's just…enjoying his extended vacation while the rest of us have to face the inevitable doom yet to come because of the Angels.

-x-

Camphrier Town was another rest stop on the way to Cyllage City, which Shinji estimated would be another four days to get to, but he was in no hurry. This detour gave him time to train his three Kalos Pokémon some more, and he was beginning to suspect that his Litleo was much stronger than he could possibly imagine. Quite possibly stronger than the badges he would need to ensure his obedience if he was at a level that came close to his evolutionary requirements, which would've made him a risk if he misbehaved.

"Eevo," went Misato to him as he snapped out of his train of thought, reminded that he was with her outside the Pokémon Center, observing the town's resident Snorlax as it continued to sleep.

"Surely, not every Snorlax needs to consume nine-hundred pounds of food every day," he told her. "I mean, the two that I caught back then in Kanto don't eat that much. Between the two of them, they eat only three-hundred-fifty pounds. Not very gluttonous."

"Eee."

"Snor…lax…" The Snorlax continued to sleep where it lay in the town.

"Well, we should go rest up for the journey tomorrow, Misato."

"Eevo."

The two walked away from the Sleeping Pokémon and made their way back to the Pokémon Center where the trainer's other Pokémon were waiting.

-x-

"…Rei?" Misato spoke in surprise, seeing the albino girl standing outside her apartment. "What are you doing out here so late at night?"

"I… I didn't feel safe on my way home," she explained. "It is…unpleasant there right now."

Asuka came into the hall and saw the other girl and asked, "Define 'unpleasant'?"

"It felt like someone was there, waiting for me," she told them. "Someone I wasn't expecting to be there at all."

Asuka got the impression that Rei wasn't lying about someone being at her place waiting for her. It would've been unlikely that anyone would actually go to her place without an invite and wait for her to return. If she had to ask who Rei thought was likely to be waiting for her, she wasn't sure she'd like the answer on who.

"I don't think Shinji will mind if you crash in his room," she told the girl.

"Yeah," Misato relented, letting Rei into the unit. "Be mindful of Pen-Pen, though."

-x-

"…Hmm?" Antonio went, noticing an object nearby Palkia's containment chamber, seeing that it was red and white and ball-shaped. "Uh-oh."

"You've noticed, as well?" Palkia questioned. "It hasn't made an attempt to move just yet. It actually surprised me by just being here."

"Is that what I think it is?" He asked the Spatial Pokémon.

"It is," Palkia answered, and suddenly…the ball rolled away from its containment chamber, revealing its identity to be an unexpected shocker.

"And I thought the Porygon were the closest we had gotten to physically bringing Pokémon to this dimension," Antonio expressed, concerned because of the potential danger this creature represented to the nearby equipment.

"Voltorb," it went, its eyes locked on the human.

Because he only had Shinji and Kensuke's intel on the Pokémon to rely on, Antonio backed away slowly; so long as he made no quick movements, the Ball Pokémon wouldn't react with hostility. He went to the main console where they could monitor Shinji and slowly picked up his phone. Keeping his eyes on the Voltorb, he speed dialed the number for Misato Katsuragi.

"Katsuragi residence?" He heard her voice after she picked up.

"Hello, Ms. Katsuragi," he calmly greeted, "it's Antonio Giovanni, speaking."

"Is something wrong?"

"Sort of. You remember the attempt that was made after the blackout committed by Gendo that managed to bring four Virtual Pokémon into our dimension?"

"Yes, what about it?"

"It may be that we unexpectedly had a late or unexpected arrival from an extra guest. I'm staring at a Voltorb right now in the facility. Is it possible you can come by?"

"Voltorb?!" Misato gasped. "Red on top, white on bottom? Angry eyes? Explosive temperament? That Voltorb?!"

"The one and only."

The phone call disconnected and Antonio could only pray that the woman was on her way. If traffic conditions were smooth, it would only take her twelve minutes to get here. Six minutes if she sped up and broke the traffic rules of the road. With the skeleton crew asleep, that left only him for the next four hours to keep an eye on things with the security and equipment.

"So, uh…how are you this evening?" He asked the Ball Pokémon.

"Voltorb!" It uttered.

"Eh-heh-heh…great."

"You don't even know what it said," Palkia told him.

"Just making conversation. What did it say?"

"It's hungry for more electricity."

"Really?"

"You asked."

"Voltorb."

"Oh, no."

"What?"

"You…should probably stay three feet away from it."

The Voltorb rolled towards Antonio, who ran from it.

"We're fortunate that it hasn't had any electricity to feed off of," Palkia informed him. "It won't be destructive if it decides to explode."

"But it can still cause a scene if it decides to do so!" He yelled as he ran towards a wooden crate nearby and climbed atop it. "Thank God Voltorb cannot climb things bigger than themselves."

"Voltorb!"

"Believe it or not, this Voltorb now says that it likes you, finds you amusing."

"Oh, really?"

-x-

"Oh?" Shinji went as he woke up in the dead of night, looking out a nearby window in the Pokémon Center. "Did I…hear someone just now?"

He looked around the empty room he occupied with his Eevee, seeing that his Litleo was out of his Poké Ball, walking on a desk in front of the window.

"Leo?" He asked, straining his eyes because he was still tired.

"Rrah!" Leo growled.

"Eee…" Misato went, waking up beside Shinji and looking down at Leo. "Eevo?"

"Rrarh!" Leo grunted.

Shinji checked his watch on his left arm and found that it was barely after three. But something was up with Leo, and it was unlikely to get resolved if they did nothing.

"What's going on?" He wondered as he got up with Misato.

"Eee?"

-x-

Misato had no other choice in the matter, bringing Asuka and Rei with her to the facility housing Palkia, as they all had a hands-on approach with Electric-Type Pokémon, and because Shinji had caught several Voltorb and the subsequent Electrode while in Kanto and Johto, something Kensuke's video discs helped a great deal of showing how the Pokémon Trainer had to deal with them and how he seemed to be among the handful of people that held onto the belief that both had been the result of an experiment in modern Poké Ball development decades ago by the Silph Company in Saffron City in Kanto, which resulted in an outbreak of the new Pokémon that, while not recognized as a threat to natural ecosystems in the world, were viewed as an epidemic due to having spread across the planet. It was only by the determination of Pokémon Trainers that saw fit to catch them that kept the Ball Pokémon population under control.

"How did a Voltorb manage to get here?" Asuka wondered as they got out of the car.

"Probably a careless mistake that was overlooked," Misato suggested when they made it through the door. "Antonio?!"

"Whoa…whoa!" They heard his voice in the sublevel chamber where Palkia resided for the interdimensional research. "Whoa!"

They entered the room and saw Palkia.

"You missed the miracle of evolution," he told the women.

Misato looked over at where Antonio was…and was surprised by what he was doing.

The Voltorb was no more, replaced by a larger and stronger Electrode, and Antonio was balancing atop it.

"Uh…hey, there," he greeted them. "Here's Electrode."

"Electrode!" The Ball Pokémon expressed, rolling over to where they stood, looking at them with a smile. "Electrode!"

"I take it that Electrode…isn't going to do anything careless?" Asuka asked Antonio.

"Believe it or not, Palkia says that when it was a Voltorb, it actually liked me. Even as Electrode, it still likes me."

"It looks like you unintentionally got a Pokémon of your own," Misato told him. "You need to be careful with Electrode now. Until we see a day where there are plenty of Pokémon in our world, anyone that desires a Pokémon that's just rare due to being the only one around, they'll try and take it. By any means they can."

Antonio sighed and slid off Electrode.

"Anyone that dares to try and take this Electrode for wrongful purposes and mistreats it…will be on the receiving ends of a black eye and expensive lawsuit," he told them.

"Where is everyone?" Rei asked, noticing that the others that helped out with the research and monitoring of the Pokémon world were absent.

"They're asleep," he explained. "We don't all run on batteries. That's just impossible with the way things are right now."

The albino turned her gaze to the Electrode and bowed her head to it.

-x-

Sitting against a tree outside of the town, Shinji, Misato and Leo were trying to process what they had seen just an hour ago…and the Pokémon Trainer was bothered the most by what had been witnessed. He looked down at Leo, unsure of how powerful he was or how committed he was to what was to happen later.

Another danger that awaits those on the path leading towards it, he thought as he reflected upon the sight of the tree they had see earlier…or the illusion of a tree…turning into a Pokémon he had never seen before…but its outline making him think of the twenty-third letter of the English alphabet. And you were testing me when we met that day. Even in the gym match again Viola. You had to make sure that I could handle what's to come. I can handle it. Even when half my instincts tell me to run, the other half tells not to run away, to stand and face the danger. I've stood my ground against life-threatening encounters many times before…and the experience gained in these encounters…have only made us all stronger. I can't walk away from this, even if I wanted to. There's no greater foolishness than knowing there's danger and not doing what you could to face and prevent it.

"Raarh!" Leo growled at him.

"I'm stronger than you think, Leo," he told him. "Each Pokémon I train becomes stronger when we all put in the effort to grow together."

"Rrah!"

"Eevo," went Misato to Leo, backing up Shinji's claim that they're stronger together when they all put in the effort to do so.

Still, Shinji felt the need to identify the mysterious Pokémon he saw. The mysterious Pokémon that might've been more than what it seemed and may have some connection with the Kalos Region if people historical documents. It just made him of the letter "X" for some reason, the way it was presented in front of them in the light. With just one badge right now, he would need to prove his strength and acquire seven more to gain entry into the Kalos League, and once he reached that point in their time here, he knew what to expect later.

Who was that Pokémon? He wondered.

To be continued…

A/N: Don't worry, Shinji's going to get the other badges and we'll know which Pokémon it was he saw.
