Senna would be lying if she said she slept well that night, her mind was still comprehending everything that she and Master Xehanort had discussed from the day. It was like trying to do a long puzzle picture, trying to figure out how it all fits together, and getting frustrated when they don't at first try. Her thoughts went back to Nevrexa and how Master Xehanort mentioned she was a leading figure in some sort of keyblade war. If those born under the Lunar Eclipse were chosen for some great purpose, was Nevrexa born for the purpose of fighting in that war, and if she was does that mean Senna herself was meant to be a part of some great battle? These were the thoughts that kept her up most of the night.
When she woke from her restless sleep in the morning, she decided to do some research on this Keyblade war and see if she could find any more information on Nevrexa maybe there could be some clues to give her a better understanding.
"We're not going to see you at all today," Ven said a little disappointed when Senna mentioned she wasn't going to be with them in most of their lessons.
Senna just shakes her head "I mean you'll see me probably after the end of your lessons and for our nightly star gazing, but I want to spend some time reading a few books for a while. I'll even bring Nugget out, and see if he'll let you ride him yet."
Ven reluctantly just nodded, Just like with Aqua and Terra, he considers Senna a very close friend, and if there was one thing, he hated was not being able to see them as by this point there wasn't a day when they weren't together.
"Come on Ven, you can't expect Senna to just sit there with us for all of our lessons. She has hobbies of her own as well outside of our lessons" Aqua said gently reprimanding him.
"I know."
Terra having just finished his breakfast looked at Senna "So what are you planning on reading."
"I'm surprised you have any interest in what books she might be reading" Aqua teased, causing Terra to blush lightly.
"Just curious is all."
"Whatever sounds interesting," Senna said being as truthful as possible, She didn't want to have to explain why she wanted to read about this keyblade war quite yet. It was more like she just wanted to try and grasp it herself first before she told them about Nevrexa and the Lunar Eclipse.
Right on time the bell chimed, signaling it was time for their morning lessons.
"All right see you later Senna, maybe I'll stop by during our break," Aqua said waving as she left with Terra and Ven.
Senna just waves after her "Sounds good."
For the first time in what seems like forever, Senna decides to forgo her morning meditation and head straight for the library to get started with her notepad in hand. What she failed to even consider, was just how many books there were on the topic of the history of the keyblade. It was hard to even know where to begin with all of it, but she figured a historical event such as a keyblade war surely must be in every one of these books. So, she just picked one from the shelves and got started. Already from the first passage, she could tell it was going to be interesting.
Long ago when the worlds were whole and full of light, it was believed that the source of the world's great light was Kingdom Hearts, which was protected by the X-blade, which is said to be the only key to unlocking and accessing Kingdom Hearts. However, people soon became obsessed with the light and wanted it for themselves, thus causing darkness to be born in their hearts. Soon a clash broke out between those who wanted to protect Kingdom Hearts and those who wanted to conquer it by obtaining the X-blade, which would allow one to control Kingdom Hearts. Darkness soon spread throughout the world as the X-blade was shattered into 20 pieces, 7 of pure light and 13 of pure darkness and Kingdom Hearts disappeared into darkness.
Thanks to the light within the hearts of children, the worlds began to reform, but now with barriers that prevented each other from learning each other's existence. The remnants of the battlefield of the great war is now known as the Keyblade Graveyard.
This was not at all what Senna expected to read, with how short and vague it was it seemed like a fairytale more than anything else, with no mention of a single person or what explicitly happened during that war. What even was Kingdom Hearts, a source of light but that can mean anything? Then 7 of pure light and 13 of pure darkness, How on earth does that fit into anything, It crossed her mind that Sin could've been one of those 13 but with nothing to base it on it's just a thought.
Senna let out a sigh realizing this was going to be more of an undertaking than she originally realized.
The first book wasn't a total disappointment, Despite the only mention of the keyblade war at the beginning, she did find the information about Scala ad Caelum very interesting. It was once the home for all keyblade wielders, founded by a keyblade wielder named Ephemer. It specifically mentioned its whole structure was based on the Summoner's seat of power in Bevelle. The book even further states that this was the point where Keyblade wielders and Summoners had first formed friendly relations.
Senna just stared at the sentence for a brief moment
I wonder what happened to sour that relationship, to such a point.
The picture the book provided was gorgeous, the ocean looks like it just goes on and on. All the buildings were structured together like a mountain and on top of each one was a citadel. Senna couldn't help but wonder why Master Eraqus doesn't live there instead of here, and from the sounds of it neither does Master Xehanort, he seems more of a traveling vagabond. This book didn't divulge further into it., so she was hoping maybe some of the other books would.
Unfortunately, the next couple of books she skimmed through brought no new information, in fact, it only added to her confusion. While they all talk about a keyblade war for kingdom hearts, there were too many inconsistencies regarding the X-Blade, with some seeing it as the bringer of chaos to all the worlds, while others saw it as a weapon to save the world with.
Senna was just about to give up until finally, she came across a book that had the name Nevrexa in it.
"Oh thank gosh," Senna said running her hands over her face, after spending what seemed like forever. While she could spend days reading, this was irritating because she actively searched for specific information that only a few were aware of. It's like trying to find the needle in the haystack.
Nevrexa, one of the leading Keyblade wielders who fought to protect Kingdom Hearts, was the only known baby born during a Lunar Eclipse that lasted until near dawn despite many mothers expecting around the same time. Many questioned whether her extraordinary abilities both with magic and the keyblade were the result of such a unique birth. From what I have observed of her abilities, I attest to this belief as not even the foretellers could match her in strength and wisdom, and they were trained by the master of masters himself. If that wasn't enough to convince me, then the fact that her strength alone was enough to shatter the mighty X-blade into 20 pieces and fight off a gigantic gargantuan whale-like creature who disappeared shortly after the world fell into darkness. I am certain that she met her demise by shattering the X-blade, but her Keyblade was not among the fallen. I have multiple theories on why that is, but nothing concrete yet. I do not doubt that the answer will come in time.
Senna was astonished not just by the information, but the fact this book seemed to be almost a first-hand account of the keyblade war. Even with the strongest magic, nothing this old could have survived as long as it did.
"So, there you are Senna"
Senna jumped and closed the book as she let out a small scream.
She turned around and let out a sigh of relief when she saw Master Eraqus making his way towards her.
"I apologize I didn't mean to startle you, Aqua told me you were in here. Should've headed her warnings about you being so immersed in your readings" he said looking apologetic.
Senna just smiles "It's quite alright, Is it break time already?"
"Break time, actually lessons are already over for the day"
Senna quickly looked out the window and saw from the sun's position it was already past 3 in the afternoon. She was shocked by how much time had passed, it felt like a couple of hours but not almost the whole day.
"Aqua said she came in earlier, but you were so immersed in your readings that she didn't want to disturb you" he explained seeing the look on her face.
"I didn't realize"
Master Eraqus seeing the multiple books on the table caught his curiosity "So what were you reading that got you so invested."
"I was curious about why Summoners and Keyblade wielders were so against each other, I mean back at home in our texts there's barely even a mention, so I wanted to see if there was anything in these texts about it. I was surprised to learn how Scala ad Caelum was based on the Summoner's seat of power of Bevelle and that this is where friendly relationships were started" Senna replied.
While this was part of the truth, she couldn't tell him exactly the reason why she was looking at their history books. In any other circumstance, she was sure he wouldn't have minded at all, but there was information she now knew that he didn't want to tell her and she didn't particularly want to reveal about eavesdropping on his and Master Xehanort's conversation. If she was back at home, she wouldn't have felt guilty for eavesdropping, but the difference was this man was kind enough to take her in, and what a way to repay him by eavesdropping just to satisfy her curiosity.
She didn't want to dig herself into a deeper hole than she already was, so she was going to be honest as much as she could without revealing what she knew, and maybe he would bring it up himself.
At the mention of Scala ad Caelum, Master Eraqus's expression turned into one of reminiscence.
"How long has it been since I have heard that name."
"So did you live there, the books mention the place being a seat of power for the keyblade wielders," Senna asked curiously.
Master Eraqus nodded "Yes, I was born and raised there. It's also where I met Master Xehanort when he arrived. He was a brooding one when he first arrived, but as you can tell he's always been like that"
"Come now Eraqus, do not forget which of us was committed to our studies, while the other one was clowning around"
Both Senna and Master Eraqus turned around and saw Xehanort entering the room.
Master Eraqus just smiled "Fair point, our master always did have such a soft spot for you."
Senna started to think she might have been too harsh on her initial assessment of Master Eraqus. While she still believed he embraced the light a little too fanatically, the fact that he had an obvious fondness for Master Xehanort shows that he wasn't willing to throw away his friendship with Xehanort. Whatever minor falling out they might have had; it was obvious they were able to overcome it.
Master Eraqus then turned back to Senna "But back to what you were telling me. Yes, when Scala ad Caelum was constructed, one of its founders Ephemer had discovered the world of Spira, how he did it is not known, but the two groups formed friendly relationships soon after."
"So why did the relationships turn so sour then, that the keyblade wielders wouldn't interfere when Sin had attacked Bevelle during my grandfather's time."
This time it was Master Xehanort who answered "At some point, both groups wanted to exchange exclusive knowledge, but there was a lot of resistance from the elders from both sides who feared what someone could do with such power if used incorrectly."
"I don't understand what knowledge are you talking about," Senna asked, trying to figure out what knowledge the summoners had that could be used incorrectly, she really couldn't think of any that she knew of
Xehanort gave Eraqus a knowing look, who looked a bit hesitant but decided it was best to tell her.
"You see we keyblade masters know a certain trick to be able to either lock or unlock barriers whether they be physical objects or the heart of a person."
Senna gasped as she instinctively put her hand over her own heart.
Master Xehanort continued "Yes, and if I recall you Summoners can separate your spirits from your bodies and travel to certain worlds that you are personally connected with such as one that your familiars reside, while still keeping yourself tethered to your physical form."
Her eyes widened "I don't understand, that particular technique is taught to all of us when we're mere children, I don't see why it would be such a big deal."
"It's what can be done with that power, Yes For any normal keyblade wielder or summoner each technique does seem like it would be fairly common, but for those outside our groups, they would be forbidden to know because one cannot determine how they would use that power as they were never properly taught."
Senna put a hand on her chin as she contemplated what Master Eraqus had said "So is that why there was so much mistrust then between the two groups."
"Yes, and as the years went by it just grew and grew between them. If I recall correctly, your grandfather Braska tried to play peacekeeper between the two before Sin's assault on Bevelle, but by then it was simply too late."
Senna just shakes her head as the information sinks in "It sounds so stupid and so preventable."
Both groups wanted each other's exclusive knowledge, but for what, to battle the darkness, or was there something more?
She decided to just drop that particular subject for now, it was starting to give her a headache.
"So, what happened to Scala ad Caelum."
What she didn't expect was the glare that Master Eraqus gave to Master Xehanort, who just stood there with his arms behind his back with a smile.
"Don't give me that look Eraqus you as well as I do that Baldr needed to be stopped at any cost."
Seeing the concerned look on Senna's face Xehanort continued "I won't bore you with the details, but our mutual friend Baldr let himself be consumed by the darkness and so he went on a rampage trying to recreate the Keyblade war. He needed to be stopped at any cost, he destroyed nearly half the city and the population. All remaining keyblade wielders scattered and made their homes elsewhere."
"The keyblade war, you mean that little section about it in the books. The way it's written sounds more like an urban legend or fairy tale" Senna said wondering why someone would want to recreate a war.
"Ah, but there is always some truth in these Legends."
Master Eraqus then interrupted "Why do you think we have such Legends, as warnings Xehanort so we may not repeat the mistakes of our predecessors."
Master Xehanort said they had a minor falling out before, but maybe it wasn't as minor as he made it out to be.
"Well, I think it is time I retire for the evening, I have an early trip in the morning, I do hope to see you in the morning Lady Senna" Master Xehanort said before turning around and making his way out the door.
However, neither Eraqus nor Senna saw him glance over at the book Senna was reading as he made his leave.
Master Eraqus let out what seemed like a long-suffering sigh "Excuse Master Xehanort, he means well but his curiosity is his biggest weak point."
"It's quite all right, I know what that is like. You guys have such an interesting history, I couldn't help but get lost in it." Senna said with a nervous chuckle.
"Senna I was hoping I could ask a favor"
Senna looked surprised he of all people would ask something of her, so all she did was nod and say "Of course."
He turned back to her with a smile, but his eyes she noticed looked sad in a way she's never seen before.
"I was hoping you wouldn't say anything about our little chat regarding Kingdom Hearts to my pupils."
Senna wondered what her face looked like with all the confusion that swirling around in her head with that request.
"Why, Kingdom Hearts seems like such an important part of your history, Why would you keep that a secret?"
"That whole situation with my classmate Baldr has taught me that the more others know of Kingdom Hearts, the more likely the chance that a fool would want to recreate another keyblade war. It's not that I haven't told them of the Keyblade War or of what happened to Scala ad Caelum, I told them the very basics of them. Those who let the darkness into their hearts can no longer be reasoned with. I would like to try to protect my pupils from that sinister knowledge, I believe some Legends should die out and Kingdom Hearts is one of them."
Whatever happened in Scala ad Caelum must have traumatized him very badly, maybe that's why he clings to light as he does.
"Of course, Master Eraqus, you have my word," Senna said because she knew it wasn't her place to say anything about it as much as she disagreed with him on it. As painful and terrible as it is, it should be taught, many lessons can be learned from it.
Master Eraqus does a quick bow as a sign of respect "Thank you Senna, and may I once again say what a joy it has been to have you in our company. My pupils took a quick liking to you."
"I'm glad, they have gone above and beyond in making me feel at home here."
It was obvious the pride he had in his pupils from his expressions, and she could empathize with him wanting to protect his students from what he made out to be one of the worst parts of their history, and she believed he was doing the same with her by not wanting to disclose anything to her about her birth. While it wasn't the best way to approach things, his heart was set in the right place, so it had to count for something right.
Master Eraqus soon left to go and have his dinner for the evening, and Senna decided to jot down a few more notes before going to join everyone else for dinner. She was most interested in Nevrexa and the shattering of the X-blade, a weapon so controversial just from the little she read, It made her go back to what Master Xehanort had told her, those born under the Lunar Eclipse can be either seen as blessed or seen as a destroyer. Did Nevrexa save the worlds by destroying the X-blade? or was she the cause of the darkness engulfing the worlds by shattering it and causing Kingdom Hearts to disappear
She soon felt the small pang growing in her head, and becoming more painful each minute. She quickly closed the book and put it in her bag so she could read it in her room later. She tried to massage her head to help the pain, but it didn't do anything. She quickly got up and slowly started making her way out of the room.
By the time she made it out of the library, she had to hold on to the wall for support because of how much pain she was in.
Senna screamed as she fell to her knees, clutching her head, as her vision blurred and images started popping into her head.
Senna opened her eyes and saw she was in the land of familiars except this time the sky was dark and the wind was picking up heavily. She saw all around her, her familiars were by her side but she couldn't find her voice.
"Oh dear, everything is being destroyed," Seraph said with a hand over her mouth watching the scene unfold in horror.
Red just growled, "How could this have happened."
Rikku held on to Paine and Yuna, as Bahamut let out a roar.
Suddenly a bright light took over and this time Senna was outside the castle in the Land of Departure, but this too was surrounded by dark skies, and In the skies was a big ball of darkness that was tearing the castle apart. In the middle of it all was Terra who was looking at some star-like charm that was colored orange.
Senna tried to call out but once again her voice was silenced, so she tried running towards him, but then a wind of darkness blocked her way, blocking her view of Terra.
"SENNA" she heard her name being called out.
The bright light once again took over her vision.
By the time her vision cleared, she realized she was looking at the familiar tile floor of the castle. She felt hands on her shoulders and she slowly lifted her head and met the blue eyes of a very concerned-looking Terra.
"Are you all right, what's wrong"
Senna felt so out of breath she could barely get the words out "I-I d-don't know, h-head hurts."
Terra suddenly but gently at the same time scooped her up in his arms, any other time Senna would've been embarrassed and blushing, but she just rested her head against his shoulder as he started to walk.
She was so out of it she didn't realize; she was already in her bed with all of her curtains drawn so no light could get it in. Senna lifted her hand to her forehead and realized there was a cool cloth over it. Most of the immediate pain was gone, so now Senna just felt like she was in a mental fog.
"So, you are awake," a quiet voice said.
Senna looked over and saw Aqua standing at the threshold of her door with a tray in her hand.
"What time is it" Senna asked with her voice cracking.
Aqua set the tray down by the table next to the bed and took a seat next to Senna "It's almost after 7."
"7, I didn't realize I was out. I remember Terra finding me and that's about it" Senna said as the memories came back to her.
"How are you feeling"
Senna placed a hand on her stomach "Nauseated, very nauseated."
"Migraines will do that to you. You looked so pale when Terra brought you to your room. Thankfully he shut all the curtains and made sure no light was coming in."
Senna couldn't help but smile when she heard that "That was very sweet of him."
"I brought some water and crackers if you need some."
Senna just grimaced "Maybe later, it doesn't sound too appetizing right now. I think I'm going to just sleep the rest of the night."
"Well, do you think you can at least drink some water, just so you don't dehydrate" Aqua asked as she picked up the glass from the tray.
Senna nodded and sat up just enough to let Aqua help her with the glass. She was surprised by how thirsty she was, whatever happened earlier must have caused some dehydration. Soon enough the whole glass was empty.
"Alright, if you need anything I'll be in my room the rest of the night. See you in the morning."
Aqua quietly left the room and was careful to shut the door behind her.
Senna just groaned as she closed her close, trying to keep her mind clear. She has no idea what happened, but this is not the time to be thinking about it. Luckily, she found herself quickly falling asleep, but she noticed something familiar also happening it was that sensation of when her spirit was leaving her body to go the land of the familiars
Author's Note
Alright here's the next chapter. Again, this was another lore chapter, and as mentioned before you don't have to understand it all at once. After all for those who played Kingdom Hearts, you know very well what I mean, and for those who don't know the game likes to give you a lot of information that gives you some answers but leaves you with many more questions that won't be answered later on. I'm curious, What are you guys thinking about what Senna was seeing when started getting her headaches? Also, what are your thoughts on Eraqus and Xehanort's relationship, there's a lot of history good and bad between the two.
