Character age:
Akane, Itachi: 21
Naruto, Sasuke: 16
Shisui: 25
Kakashi: 30
A part of Shisui was starting to regret having Akane on his team. She was a powerful kunoichi and knew the country, but the way she was questioning almost all of his decisions was slowing them down. The Hokage warned him before they left. Akane had a serious insubordination problem and although he didn't know what happened exactly, something had happened in the two months she had been in Konoha.
Two months.
What could she had done in two months?
He wished he could ask her but there was no time for that. He felt a little bit guilty as well. If Akane had done something, then maybe he could have done something to prevent it. However, since he came back in Konoha, his relationship was taking all of his free time.
He barely saw Itachi as well, and the few times he did, the younger Uchiha was distant with him. Shisui knew why, and he hoped Itachi would...get used to his girlfriend. He had been dating her for more than a year and truly loved her.
It didn't mean he didn't feel anything for Akane though, and it would always make him sick to the stomach when he'd think about the Uzumaki while he was with Manami. Akane had asked him to move on, to be happy and when she left Konoha with Sasuke, he took some time to mend his broken heart before realizing that he needed to breath. While he was on his mission, he met Manami. She was sweet, caring, yet witty and funny. She was the first one interested and he just decided to give it a shot. He didn't regret it one second.
He did regret replacing her with Akane in the beginning of their relationships, be it during dates, sex or fights even. After a while, there was only her though.
He still cared deeply for Akane. Even if he had felt a slight pang at his heart when he heard she was living with Itachi. He had not expected that. He had not expected Itachi to make his move like that.
However, her behavior was troubling. Insubordination, questioning your leader's decisions...it could put a mission and everyone's lives at risks. The more powerful the person was, the more risks there were. Worst, Akane also was a target for the Akatsuki. Shisui knew Haku was her relative, that she was the one who turned him into a jinchuriki and that guilt was probably eating her from the inside and that she wanted to save him, but Naruto was on the team. He couldn't let her compromise his safety. If Naruto was taken because she thought she knew better, then they would all be in a pretty bad situation.
"Let's stop here for a while." They all jumped down from the trees. Shisui looked at all of them. "Juugo, Karin, Suigetsu and...Sasuke, you've got a flying summon?" His cousin nodded. "Good, then the four of you can make a scouting squad." He saw Akane frowning from the corner of his eyes.
"What about us!?" Naruto asked him.
"We'll have to wait until the Akatsuki lair is found." Naruto and Akane both widened their eyes. "First of all, Sakura needs to rest after taking care of Suigetsu all night and the Akatsuki is after the both of you." He gave them a pointed look. "I'm not going to send us blindly to the Akatsuki to give them two of their targets." He pulled five radios from his pouch and threw four of them to the scouting squad. "We'll stay in contact thanks to these. Kiri should send a back-up team anyway, so we won't make a move until they're here."
"We're wasting time," he heard Akane muttering under her breath.
He ignored her and adjusted his radio.
"You can go when you're ready." They nodded and left.
Akane walked up to him, a snarl on her face. He fought the urge to pinch his nose, knowing it would only anger her more. He let her grab his wrist and take him away from the two teenagers.
"We're wasting time!" she exclaimed once they were alone. "We should go there right when the Akatsuki lair is found!"
"We don't even know how many there are here, we can't risk going there blindfolded Akane," he rationalized calmly.
"Then I should join Sasuke! He can fly and I can sense, it's..."
"Stop questioning my decisions just for one minute, would you?" he asked her coldly. She blinked. "You know the area and you care about Haku, I know that, but with Naruto and you in the team I can't make reckless decisions."
"Sasuke is a target as well!"
"He knows less!"
"SO!?" He frowned when she raised her voice and she glared at the ground, fists clenched by her sides. "Extracting takes time but we can't just stay here and do nothing while they..."
"I am the leader during this mission Akane, my orders are absolute!" She grabbed him by his flak jacket.
"With you, and me here, and Sasuke, we probably could take them on, or at least get Haku back! Shisui, please...you've got to rethink tha..." He made her let go of his jacket, ignoring the pleading look in her eyes.
He couldn't allow her or Naruto to be taken.
"Akane, my decision is final."
Two hours later, they received words from Karin, who had sensed two persons in ruins, to the east of the island.
He looked away for two seconds.
Just two.
It was enough for Akane to disappear, Naruto with her.
"Damn it," he cursed, anger flashing through his eyes.
I stared at Naruto, his blue eyes not wavering in the slightest.
"I told you I wouldn't leave you behind!"
"It's not 'behind' if I'm going befo..."
"You get what I mean!" I averted my eyes. "I heard you fighting with Shisui-nii too. There's no way I'm letting Haku be killed just to protect us." I pursed my lips in thought.
I knew where Shisui was coming from.
Letting someone die like that, staying behind and wait...I couldn't do that anymore.
"Alright, then let's go." I knew exactly where they were. There were ruins of an old civilization, maybe the Otsutsukis' now I was thinking about it, at the location Karin told us about.
Soon the forest disappeared and we were on a cliff. We looked down. A small town was there, in ruins, and I pointed at an old gate in the rocks of a mountain. We jumped down.
"It's depressing," Naruto noted, looking around.
"It's old, it's what it is," I denied, although once at the entrance of the cave, I shivered. I frowned. "There's no one."
"Heh? You're sure?"
"Pretty much," I replied, frustrated. He frowned.
"Well check again!"
"I still know how to sen..." I threw a marker behind me and grabbed Naruto, teleporting to the marker. Naruto shot me a look that said 'told-you-so' when a swirl appeared out of thin air.
Obito was there.
"Ah, it's you again!" he yelled in his stupid voice, pointing a finger at me. Then, he pointed at Naruto. "And you're Ushio-san's target!" Naruto shot me a look, silently asking me if he really was the infamous Uchiha who controlled Yagura for years.
I shrugged, not able to find an explanation for his behavior.
Kakashi was a troll but maybe Obito was even a bigger one.
"Hey you dumb fuck!" I widened my eyes like saucers at Naruto's language. Part of me was proud, oh so proud, but where did he learn that? I knew I could curse a lot, but usually as a shinobi and I had not been that much around Naruto as a shinobi, ri…
Damn, I bet it was Sasuke.
"Don't talk to Tobi like that!"
"I'll talk to you like I want dattebayo!" Naruto replied angrily.
Naruto shot me a look. I momentarily froze because I knew that look, but never saw on this Naruto.
Old Naruto though? It was the look he would give that told people he was in charge and he had a plan. It was Nanadaime's look.
Let's go with it I guess?
It was satisfying, not gonna lie. Catching the Sanbi's jinchuriki after what happened in Kiri was very satisfying to Obito. He had not wanted to take Yagura because it was too soon for the Akatsuki to reveal their true intentions, but Akane turned him down and implied death would be better than joining him.
That kid was a relative of hers and it had been very satisfying to see him fall to them.
He made sure to shape her into a great kunoichi, one that could survive anything in their world and would be able to help him and it was the 'thanks' he got? How ungrateful she was. Or maybe she still had not really seen his true intentions after all.
She had no idea of who he was after all, right? Well, even if she had, Uchiha Obito died crushed by a boulder, there was no way he could have survived that.
This Naruto kid reminded him to much of himself though.
"So, I heard you wanted Akane as well?"
"Ah, Tobi does what his senpais want!" he replied in his stupid voice.
"You sure you want her!? Because she's a worst closet-pervert than Kakashi-sensei!"
He forgot the anger he felt at the name of his old teammate.
Closet-pervert? Kakashi?
Akane as well? No, she wouldn't…
"Yeah, I know Pervy Sage even signed her whole Icha Icha collection!" Jiraya…
Wait, what?
"I'm sure she even talks about it with Kakashi-sensei in some kind of book club every week. I don't even want to imagine what they're actually talking about, must be gross."
What the hell was happening? Akane looked absolutely horrified by the words coming from Naruto's mouth, paling every second.
'She should be, she shouldn't be reading that kind of crap. Hidan was more than enough as a creep.'
"She's real loud too you know, always complaining! Like, do you want her to complain during whatever you're planning for her?"
"Heh...Tobi didn't picture her like that at all..." Naruto nodded strongly.
"I know, right! She looks cool from the outside, but really, she's a pervert, and she drinks too!"
"Alright, I think he gets it."
"But..."
"Naruto, you shouldn't be denigrating me while he's the one we're fighting!"
"But nee-chan!" Obito looked at them bickering.
He knew Tobi was a stupid character, but the cloak with red clouds did mean something. Were they forgetting it?
Although, seeing Naruto being scolded by Akane vaguely reminded him of how Kushina would scold him.
He spun around when he heard something in the air. Akane was there, throwing markers at him.
'You should know better.' Obito thought, turning himself intangible. She ran at him, a flashback of his fight against Minato coming back to him. Much like that night, she teleported herself just above him right before he could grab her.
Fine, he knew that trick. He turned around, ready to choke her and teach her some manners but saw the blue, swirling chakra of the Rasengan and Naruto's furious blue eyes.
'Huh, good enough.' He grabbed Naruto by the throat.
However, Naruto smirked and stuck his tongue at him.
Obito widened his eye at the glowing explosive seal on his tongue.
Then, everything blew up, starting with his right arm. He jumped away from the smoke of the explosion. When the smoke vanished, he had two smirking Uzumakis in front of him.
"I knew it would distract him enough to come up with a plan nee-chan!" She shot Naruto a dirty glare.
"I still don't like the way you talked to me." He scratched the back the his head with a sheepish grin.
"It worked though..."
Obito gritted his teeth behind his mask. He walked right into Naruto's distraction and it was enough for them to come up with something.
They had made a fool out of him.
Might as well bring them back to Earth.
They couldn't beat him, but they could get information.
I frowned when the swirl was back around his eye.
"Careful, he could teleport any moment," I told Naruto. He nodded.
However, my heart dropped at what happened. Obito didn't move.
Haku was thrown at us though.
I couldn't feel any chakra from him.
"Ha...ku?" I called him weakly, my legs shaking.
"Tobi is a good boy so Tobi convinced his senpais to give you the body back!" Obito said cheerfully, yet I saw a glimpse of red in his mask.
"You..." Naruto growled next to me as I dropped on my knees. I didn't even react at the flare of Kurama's chakra by my side.
Haku was…
I...I killed…
It was my fau…
"Nee-chan focus!" I hugged myself, eyes wide in horror. I couldn't stare at anything but Haku.
Haku who...who's such a kind soul, who doesn…
Didn't.
Past tense. It was my faul…
"NEE-CHAN!" Naruto grabbed me, went for Haku's body and dropped us both further away, Obito now standing where we were.
I looked down at Haku. His face was covered in bruises, his arm was obviously broken and…
My fault.
I gulped, fighting the lump in my throat.
"Nee-chan." I looked up at Naruto, his pupils red instead of blue.
Was he going with three tails? Haku could do more yet…
I looked at Obito. Shivers ran up and down my whole body and I felt frightened like I had not in years and years. I felt eleven again, trying to survive against Yagura.
But it had been Obito, hadn't it? It had been Obito all along.
It had always been him. The man who traumatized me and would give me nightmares, training me until I couldn't even walk anymore.
He started to teleport again, but Shisui appeared in a body flicker next to him, ready to stab him. Obito stopped his teleportation and dodged Shisui instead.
Shisui who then body flickered in front of us.
"I swear I could kill you myself," he told us, slightly out of breath. He looked at us, then Haku and gritted his teeth. "Shit!"
"Ah, I know you! You're Shisui of the Body Flicker!" Obito took his chin between his finger. "Why do they call you like that? The body flicker is not used in fights, is it?" Shisui clenched his hand around his kunai.
"I'll show you why I have that nickname shortly." Shisui shot us a look and frowned at me. I blinked helplessly at him. "Naruto, stay with her."
"Got it!"
"I'll take care of him." On this note, I saw his sharingans changing to the Mangekyou.
Right, I removed the seal I had placed on him.
"Wow, you've got funny eyes!" He swirled away. "You're scaring Tobi away!"
He was gone.
Did he...was he scared of Shisui's Mangekyou?
"Where's Sakura-chan?"
"Sasuke, Juugo and Suigetsu ran into that Sasori. I sent her there because she already faced him and she's the poison expert among us. Karin, are they gone?"
"Ha...Haku..." I heard her stutter. "Haku!" She ran to the body and hugged him tightly. "No, no please no!"
"Kiri's team should be here shortly," Shisui announced grimly.
I saw his hand approaching me but I slapped it away. Shisui didn't seem hurt and I looked at the ground, then my hands.
I was still shaking like a leaf.
"Naruto stay with her, she's in shock."
"How could she not!?" Naruto screamed at him. "Haku...Haku, he's..."
"Alive?" I turned my head to Karin, who had stopped hugging Haku.
In the blink of an eye she went into medic mod and pressed her ear against his chest. She touched his cheek, neck, hand.
"His body is too cold," she continued, her eyes widening and she looked at me. "Oh God." Green chakra surrounded her hands and Naruto knelt next to her. "Oh my God!"
"A jinchuriki dies when their bijuu is extracted, don't they? I mean, Gaara died..." Naruto mumbled.
"They do, but..." She took a shaky breath. "One heartbeat in a minute...it's too faint for anyone but a medic to notice...it's..."
"The back-up seal I put in his seal," I whispered weakly. "It worked?"
"I'll be the judge of that." I looked back.
Dai was there with Naoto. He shot me a look and crouched next to me, putting a hand on my shoulder. His green eyes were calm.
"I got this Uzu," he stated calmly. I nodded, he nodded and went in front of Karin. "Naruto, please move aside. Karin, you're gonna do what I'm telling you and once Sakura is here, we'll incorporate her in the procedure." She nodded and Dai started to give instruction.
We went back to Kiri once Haku could be moved.
Sensei was tapping her her painted nail against her desk, staring at me. I couldn't read her eyes, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to.
"The Hokage didn't mention anything, but I guess she decided they could handle it," she ended up saying. "That being said, it doesn't excuse your behavior. You're a jounin, you know better than to blatantly disrespect your leader and disobey his orders."
"Where did his orders lead us to exactly?" I replied coldly. "I'm pretty sure we've lost Isobu and who knows if Haku's ever going to wake up. His orders we..."
"This mission is a big failure," she admitted with a frown. "And we lost Isobu, which means I will have to take appropriate measures regarding Utakata now. However, do not put the blame entirely on Shisui. There is no way any jounin would listen to someone who's letting her emotions speak before her brain."
"But..."
"No but!" she yelled. "I think I was clear when I said that if you couldn't handle it then you would come back here asap Akane. I really hoped you would prove me wrong but..." He cleared his throat. "Something to add?"
"If I may," Shisui started. He didn't even bat an eyelash when I accused him of being responsible for failing the mission. "In spite of what happened, Akane proved herself useful regarding Naruto's and Fū's training. Her knowledge about jinchuriki is one not even Jiraya-sama has, Konoha needs it at the moment." Sensei shot me a quick, calculating look before focusing on the Uchiha.
"Really?" Shisui nodded. Sensei sighed. "Fine then." She raised a finger in front of her, staring at me. "One. If I hear one more thing regarding you, I'm pulling the plug and pick you up from Konoha myself, do I make myself clear?" I nodded. "What did you get from your fight then?"
"Space-time ninjutsu. He can teleport and makes himself intangible. However, he needs to make himself solid in order to physically harm others. The only reason Naruto and I managed to hurt him is the same reason I managed to hurt him a couple of years ago: speed."
"However, I don't see many people able to confront teleportation with speed." Her eyes lingered on Shisui for a second. "He ran away when you arrived?"
"Yes."
"I believe he ran away from his eyes." They looked at me. "He's wary of Shisui's genjutsu."
"It would be logical if your theory of him fighting in the Third War is true." She frowned slightly. "Then it would mean you've probably met him already."
"It...is a possibility," he admitted. I shot him a side glance. I doubted Tsunade-san told anyone it was Obito.
As long as he didn't think it was Taiga.
"You must be tired, go get some rest. I'm going to send a message to the Hokage. You're dismissed." We left her office.
"A..." I walked away. "Akane, come on!" I didn't stop and ignored him.
Of course the bastard would body flickered in front of me.
"You're going to ignore me again?"
"I stand by what I said." He blinked. "It's your fault." He frowned deeply and put his hands in his pockets.
"So now it's my fault you couldn't control yourself?"
"Yes!"
"If you had listened to me none of this would have happened!"
"If you had listened to me we could have avoided it but noooooo! You know better than anyone else!" He glared at me.
"I never pretended I knew better than anyone else, if anything it's your specialty!" I glared back.
"So!? At least I don't treat people as missions but as human beings!" He gritted his teeth. "You just didn't care!" He opened his mouth but someone cleared their throat behind Shisui.
Ao-san stared at us sternly.
"I don't care about your relationship or who's guilty, but don't get into a fight in the middle of the Kage building," he scolded us coldly.
"I'm sorry," Shisui apologized, bowing to him before leaving. I glared nastily at his retreating back.
"Uzumaki, go to the hospital and deal with your issues but don't go around blaming others for them," Ao-san told me before going to sensei's office.
I went to the hospital. Haku's room was crowded, but he was still sleeping. When a bijuu was sealed inside a host, their chakra slowly merged with each other with time. Of course, the type of seal also impacted that mix. Haku's and Isobu's chakra had merged together to the point extracting Isobu would kill Haku from chakra exhaustion.
Two things could have happened then. Or the back-up seal activated on its own, or Isobu found a way to activate it before he was completely out of Haku. Why? Because Haku's Hyōton was activated as a defense mechanism. Somehow, he turned himself into a dead-like state in order to avoid being killed for good by the Akatsuki.
I didn't know what happened exactly, but point was Haku was alive. However, his chakra was almost entirely depleted as the back-up seal was pretty much used to hide the fact Haku was alive and make sure his vital organs kept working.
Now he had to rest to get his chakra back. The physical wounds he had had almost all been healed already, but now he was in a coma. His chakra was slow to come back due to the brutality of Isobu being extracted. His chakra system had been damaged and Dai told me they would need to monitor Haku closely in order to make sure if it was healing correctly.
Who knew if he would be able to continue being a shinobi, and if he could, how much rehabilitation would he have to do?
There were so much uncertainties.
"Why aren't you all resting? Haku won't wake up immediately."
"Yeah but..."
"Karin, you know the hospital staff will take care of him, you guys should rest. Go to the apartment." They all shared a look and Sasuke decided to stand up, weakly punching Suigetsu in the shoulder.
"Right, everybody follow us!" They did.
I ignored Naruto glance. I frowned at Chōjūrō's obvious frustration.
"Chōjūrō."
"I'm sorry, I'm...I just feel so useless." It was rare of him to show frustration. I patted his shoulder.
"Go get some rest."
Once alone in the room, I fell on the chair next to Haku's bed and took his hand.
"I'm sorry," I whispered, burying my face in the mattress next to him. "I'm sorry, I promised I'd protect you and I failed, I'm sorry..."
I spent the night there.
Hey! Thanks for reading and leave a review to tell me what you thought of this chapter!
