"So what's our plan now?" Boruto asked Sasuke.
"Urashiki is targeting Naruto. I have no idea how old he is right now or his skills now we're in an alternated reality so we should find him and observe for no..."
"But how do you do it!?" a familiar voice yelled in despair.
"That's...Dad?" Sasuke took in Naruto's appearance.
Apart from the outfit, Naruto seemed to pretty much be the same. Although, he had a few scrolls strapped to his hip next to his pouch.
However, the Seven-Tails jinchuriki laughing and clearly bragging to him was not expected.
"We're friends Naruto, that's all! Friends help each other!" she replied with a smile. Naruto rolled his eyes.
"Don't I know that already? It's just that him!" He patted his stomach. "Doesn't want anything to do with me! I asked his name like you and nee-chan told me to, but he ignored me to sleep!"
"Heh, there's not much else to do in there you know," Fū commented. "I don't really know what else to tell you, Chomei has always been pretty cool with me." Naruto sighed and looked at them. He raised a dubious brow.
"Why are you staring at us?"
"Ah, sorry, we were just..." Naruto stared at them suspiciously, stepping closer and closer to them.
"You're not from here, are you? If Sakura-chan was there she'd ask for your papers before the Konoha Police Forces deal with you. They're not that nice, the Police chief can be pretty scary dattebayo." Naruto was familiar with this version of his father then.
"We're...traveling performers." Naruto raised a brow and the girl, Fū, pushed him back and took his place.
"Are you? My name is Fū by the way, my goal is to make a hundred friends! Do you want to be my friend?"
"Hey what did I tell you about asking strangers for that!?" Naruto reprimanded her, pushing her face away.
"But I want friends!"
"You guys are pretty weird dattebasa," Boruto commented, hands crossed behind his head. Naruto heard him and turned a glare to him.
"What did you just say!? You're the weird one! 'Dattebasa'? What is that!?" Boruto glared back.
"What's with 'dattebayo' then!?"
"You little!" Sasuke could almost see a lightning between their eyes.
"Naruto, why are you attacking people in the street?" a female voice asked behind them. Naruto immediately straightened up with an innocent look. "Don't pretend you didn't do anything wrong, I saw it."
"Well they're weird Aunty!" Naruto exclaimed, pointed his thumb toward them.
"'Aunty'?" Boruto repeated under his breath. Him and Sasuke turned turned to face a red-headed woman.
Big gray eyes, long straight red hair...she was a pretty woman, probably in her thirties. The issue was, they both knew that woman.
A particular set of twins would call her 'grandma'.
She looked at them and smiled.
"I'm sorry for my nephew's behavior."
"I'm not sorry..." Naruto grumbled, folding his arms on his chest. One calm look and he was apologizing.
Boruto sweat dropped. That woman...his grand cousin or something...she was scary.
Her eyes were calm, but the threat in them was obvious.
"Are you tourists?"
"Traveling performers." Sasuke was wary of her gaze. It seemed...like she knew who they were.
There was no way she could know though. When her eyes found Boruto however, Sasuke was sure she knew. They were knowing.
To prove his point, Sasuke pulled a pink ball from his cloak. He threw it in the air and with a brief impulse of his chakra, blew it up in confetti.
"Heh, cheap trick," Naruto mumbled.
"Anyway, I was pretty sure I asked you both to go run some errands." The two teenagers widened their eyes and exchanged a panicked look.
"We're going Akiko-san!" They disappeared.
"You're a long way from home you two," Akiko told them, her smile gone. Her gaze was now serious.
"What are you talking oba-san? He just said..."
"'Dattebasa', Boruto." Sasuke frowned.
"How...do you know my name?" Boruto asked in disbelief.
"You're definitely a lot gloomier than the Sasuke-kun who calls me 'oba-san'," she continued for the adult. "And I'm sure you're aware a few things are different here than you remember."
"You know why," Sasuke almost accused her.
"Of course I know." She turned around, ready to leave. "I'm sure my daughter would be able to explain."
"Daughter?" Boruto repeated, his eyes going wide. He looked up at Sasuke. "Hey, is...is Aun..."
"I don't know Boruto."
Frankly, he didn't know anything anymore.
I was in a bad mood. There was something around Konoha. I tried to track it down but failed, obviously. Tobirama made fun of me. He never missed an opportunity to do so.
I sighed as I walked in the street. That thing...it totally made me forget Itachi's case.
What could it have bee…
I widened my eyes.
"It's at Akiko's," Minato said. I cursed in my mind.
I knew that already, so I hiraishined there. I appeared in the living-room.
They were in the study.
"Mom!" I yelled in worry. My mother calmly came out of the study, holding a turtle. "Heh? A turtle?"
"This event has never occurred before, therefore I cannot say if the rules of regular time travels apply here." I looked down at it. "However, this descendant of the Otsutsuki clan attracted the travelers from her original timeline here, and will bring the other one here as well in a few days."
Time travel?
Original timeline?
"Au...aunty?" I blinked in disbelief when Mom moved aside so that I could see the kid in front of me. Blond hair, blue eyes, two marks on his cheeks instead of three. "Aunty, is it really you?"
"Boruto..." I whispered in shock. "What...how...how is that even possible?"
"That's what we would like to know as well," another voice said. I looked up from Boruto to the man sitting in the study. He raised his visible eye to look at me, but it was enough for me to see the pain and shame in it.
"Sa...Sasuke?" He nodded.
"I don't know what exactly is happening, but they're stuck here until this one has enough chakra," Mom explained to me, looking down at the turtle. "And there's a threat following them here, coming for Naruto apparently. It's lucky Jiraya-san is in the village right now." She squeezed my hand. "I'm going to leave you for a bit." She left us.
"You're supposed to be dead and buried, in eternal torment," Sasuke stated plainly, staring at the papers on the table in front of him.
"Th..." Boruto launched himself in my arms like he used to do when he was younger, his shaking arms around me. I sighed softly and embraced him tightly.
"Au...aunty..." he sobbed, his face buried in my chest. "Why...why did you do that!? Why..." I hugged him tighter.
"I'm sorry for not saying goodbye."
"Aki-nee...she went to Kiri and Shisui-nii went with Sasuke-san and...Sarada and Hima keep...keep going to that bakery every Sunday...I...I...I'm on Team Seven with Sarada dattebasa..."
"I know sweety." I kissed him on the head and pulled him back, crouching in front of him. "Your dad told me before I left." He looked so much like Naruto just a few years ago.
"You...you weren't supposed to...to leave so soon Aunty..." I caught Sasuke's eye above Boruto's shoulder and looked down.
"Sometimes, you're in a situation where you need to act quickly. You make decisions. I have no idea if what I did back then was the right one, but I still did." I looked at him. "You don't seem much older than the last time I saw you."
"You passed away a year ago," Sasuke informed me. "But it's been nine years for you, hasn't it?"
"Yes. In April this body will turn twenty-two, so I have important things on my mind." Sasuke frowned, knowing I was talking about the war. Boruto wiped his eyes. "So you're all genin? I'm sure you're super strong now." He nodded, his arm still covering his eyes.
I stood up and pulled Boruto in the study with me, closing the door behind me. I quickly activated the soundproofing seals around it and sat down in front of Sasuke.
"So, what kind of troubles are you bringing?"
"An Otsutsuki after Kurama." I groaned.
"Of course. We're still struggling with the Akatsuki problem you know." The corner of his lips rose a little.
"I should be able to take care of him with my Rinnegan, even if he stole some of my chakra. Boruto faced some bef..."
"I'm sorry, you fought members of the Otsutsuki clan?" I asked Boruto with a frown. He grinned nervously.
"Well, the Chuunin Exams were interrupted by them and Dad was taken..." I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came up.
Old Sas...no, the Sasuke sitting right in front of me, in my mom's home, was out there, always on missions, to investigate Kaguya's ruins after all.
"From what you told me about Kaguya, I'm guessing he has the Byakugan."
"And the Rinnegan."
"And he has that fishing rod he uses to steal chakra!" Boruto added.
"Mom said we had a few days until he appeared?" They nodded. "I'll tag along Naruto. If he wants Kurama, then Fū might be in danger as well because of Chomei."
"True."
"I'll ask my mom if she can go tell Tsunade-san there will be tourists for a few days, without disclosing your identities. Boruto, it should be okay for you to stay here and sleep in Naruto's room. Sasuke, be careful of who sees you." They stared at me, then looked at each other.
"Were you always this bossy Aunty?" I blinked and scratched my cheek.
"Sorry, let's just say I'm used to having responsibilities so..."
"Hey, can we go eat Thunder Burgers?" I patted Boruto on the head and he grinned.
"They don't exist yet." He gaped.
"Seriously!?" I shrugged and returned Sasuke's stare.
"How did you end up here?" he asked, almost in despair. You needed to know him to notice that but…
"Because I'm an Uzumaki." He frowned. "When you're home, look into Uzumaki Mito's personal effects, go to Uzushio and look in the Uzumaki compound. I'm...not the only person it happened to. I'm...what the Uzumakis called a Yurei now."
"A Yurei?" Boruto repeated.
"Basically, they're the reason why the Uzumaki clan grew so strong and why their Fuinjutsu skills were so great." Sasuke frowned harder. "It's too long to explain, let's say the Fourth used a jutsu he didn't know at all. Actually, ask Tsunade-san, I'm sure she'll know."
"We're home!" I left the study to greet Naru and Fū.
"Hey, big news you two. You're going to have a roommate!" Naruto raised a brow and gaped when Boruto appeared behind me.
Once everything settled there, I teleported to oji-chan's rock head. When I was there, I dropped on my knees immediately.
Boruto...and Sasuke...they were both here. There was an Otsutsuki after this timeline Naruto. I shook my head. Maybe it was a nightmare.
"How much have you changed?" I looked up to see Sasuke. Old Sasuke. He was staring at Konoha as the sun was starting to set.
"I kept Shisui from being killed, instead we got rid of Danzou. There was no massacre, so Sasuke...this time Sasuke grew up with his parents and his brother."
"I see." He took a deep breath. "Itachi is..."
"Alive and no longer sick. I live with him." He looked down at me in surprise. "Not...like that, we're friends. I...I cried when I saw him for the first time here, then I avoided him for weeks. I also avoided Shisui for a while after Danzou's demise. It was...too hard." I clenched my fists on my thighs. "But I promised myself they would both live their lives to the fullest, so there is no way I would..."
"We'll see about that." I blinked at him. "My brother is stubborn, the one I knew or the one you now have. If he has feelings for you, he will act on them at some point." I thought back on how ambiguous a few moments we shared this past month had been.
"That's silly." He smirked. "What?"
"Nothing, it's just that if anyone knows about how he is regarding love, it's you." I blushed at that.
"Hey Sasuke..."
"Yeah?"
"Sorry." He looked down at me. "I died right in front of you. Sorry you had to go through that again. I wish I could apologize to Naruto too, that it was my choice but..." He crouched in front of me and poked me in the forehead.
"You're an idiot." I rubbed the spot. "Naruto...he still feels responsible because he was the one to send you, but if we had not been there, I think it would have been the twins and their teammate." I bit my bottom lip. "I can see it now, and as a parent I can't...blame you for that." I smiled a little, but it was...broken. Sad.
"How are they?"
"They...both got their Mangekyou, so once in Konoha I forced them to switch eyes. I took Shisui with me after your funerals, like you asked me to. Akiko decided to go to Kiri for a while and studied under the Fifth Mizukage. She said she didn't know anything about this side of her family and that she wanted to know."
"I didn't tell them a lot, did I?" I asked to no one in particular. "My dad took Itachi's place you know." He frowned.
"I...see..."
"Instead of you and your brother, it will be us fighting to death." He furrowed his brows, his eye showing obvious concern.
I slipped my arms around his neck.
"I missed you. I missed everyone."
"You're dearly missed Akane," he whispered in my ear. "I think Kakashi took it pretty hard." I pursed my lips, thinking of the Kakashi I had now.
Kakashi had lost so many people already, and he didn't know for Obito yet…
"There's a hole in my heart you know..."
"I know, trust me I know. I don't know what you've been doing, but just...don't replace us by these...other versions of ourselves."
"Of course not!"
"Don't misunderstand me." I raised a brow. "Don't replace us, but it doesn't mean you can't care just as much." I opened my mouth.
"Akane." Sasuke widened his eye slightly and I knew he went rigid at the sound of Itachi's voice. I jumped on my feet and turned around, Itachi walking toward us. He looked at Sasuke up and down, then me. "You have to make adjustments."
"Why?" He raised a brow.
"Because of what happened today?" Wha…
"Right, I forgot." He frowned slightly and shot Sasuke a suspicious look.
"And who are you?" he asked his...parallel brother?
"A traveling performer."
"Hn." He looked at me, silently telling me to just do as he said. "Let's go home."
"Right." I looked up at Sasuke. "See you later." I teleported with Itachi.
"Who was that?" he asked me immediately once we were home.
"He told yo..."
"You know him," he almost accused me. "If people see you with weird men like him, they'll talk."
"Sorry for your reputation," I hissed and he grabbed my wrist, concern written all over his face.
"Akane, I just..."
"He's from home," I blurted out. Itachi widened his eyes and looked down. Then, he gritted his teeth, gripping my wrist tighter.
"Does it mean he's going to take you back?"
"No, I don't think it's possible anyway."
"Oh." I didn't miss the satisfaction in his eyes.
"Shouldn't you worry more about whatever is going on with your medication?" I shook my head. "Anyway, your seal."
"My seal," he repeated as if he didn't know what I meant. I raised a brow.
"You told me to come to have a look at it." He seemed to remember and he let go of my wrist. "Itachi, you didn't lie to make me come with you, right?"
"Hn." I swear to God.
"Uchiha, answer!" I almost barked. He frowned, not looking at me. I swear he was trying to hide behind his high collar.
"He was suspicious," he replied quietly. I gaped and pointed an accusing finger at him.
"You are not my dad!" He shrugged and folded his arms, looking away from me.
"You're engaged to Sasuke and my friend, isn't that enough?"
He'll act on them Sasuke said? I shook my head at this thought. It made him shoot me a weird look.
"Never mind. Just because he is suspicious..." Ignore the smugness of being right. "...doesn't mean he's a bad guy."
"I never said that."
"You strongly implied it." I went in my room and shut the door.
"I have a bad feeling about that man," he said behind the door.
Well...he wasn't entirely wrong there.
"One more tail!" I yelled enthusiastically.
"Come on Naruto!" Fū cheered next to me. Naruto was still in Version One, but a fourth tail was about to appear. With a loud growl, the tail appeared. Naruto lowered his hands and looked at us. His cheek marks were more apparent. His lips had turned black and his canines were bigger. His eyes had turned red and there was like eyeliner around them.
He stood up and looked at us.
Then, he grinned.
"I did it dattebayo!" he claimed with a toothy, slightly worrying, grin. The growl in his voice was still there though, showing Kurama still had a good hold on the chakra Naruto was using. I nodded proudly.
"Good job Naru." The red coat of chakra disappeared and he fell back.
"It's exhausting!"
"Akane-nee-chan!" I turned around with a soft smile when I heard Boruto. We agreed calling me 'nee-chan' would be more fitting than 'Aunty', as he felt weird to call me by my first name.
"Heh...him again..." Naruto muttered behind me. I flicked Boruto's nose when he was in front of me and he rubbed it.
"Stop it..." he complained. "Are you done training?"
"I think so, wanna go eat something?"
"Sur..."
"I was hungry too!" Naruto exclaimed, on his feet. He slipped his arm on my shoulders. "Let's go to Ichiraku nee-chan."
"Okay. Fū do you want to come?"
"No thanks, I'm off to see Shino." She waved at us and ran off.
Boruto talked a lot on the way, and Naruto would try to talk louder to get my attention. At some point I just told them to keep it down and pulled on one of their ears.
"Hello there," I greeted Ayame and Teuchi before sitting.
"Ah, is that an Uzumaki special?" Ayame replied with a grin before looking at Boruto. "Or maybe not, Akiko-san is not here." Oh it worked with Boruto as well.
"The usual for nee-chan and me." She nodded, her father giving a thumb-up, still focused on his ramen. Ayame looked at Boruto.
"What about you?"
"I'm going to take some miso ramen with fish rolls."
"So Boruto, how is it living as a street performer?" Naruto asked him to make conversation.
"Heh? Well...it doesn't seem like it but it can be challenging."
"You're playing solo now?" Sasuke asked behind us. He moved the cloth of the shop aside. Sakura's head popped up behind his shoulder.
"Yo Sasuke, Sakura-chan," Naruto greeted them with a smile.
"Anything I need to fix?" Sakura asked him, walking around Sasuke.
"Nothing this time!" The Uchiha noticed Boruto, followed by Sakura.
"You are?" I elbowed Sasuke in the ribs. He winced, knowing he had been called out for being rude.
"That's Boruto, he's a traveling performer. That reminds me, what happened to the sketchy guy?"
"Sketchy?" Boruto repeated.
"Mom got him a hotel room after talking to the Hokage." Naruto nodded and we accepted our bowls.
"My name is Haruno Sakura," Sakura introduced herself, in better spirits than yesterday.
"Uchiha Sasuke."
"They're my teammates," Naruto informed him as they sat down. "Where's Sai by the way?"
"He had a reckon mission with Kakashi-sensei and Captain Yamato."
"What were you doing here, together?" They exchanged a look.
"We were at the hospital with nii-san." Almost as if they had planned this, I felt a presence behind me. I slurped my noodles, dead set on ignoring him.
"Yo Itachi-nii!" Boruto almost winced and shot me a look. I nodded.
Yes, it was the twins' father.
"You're not seriously still mad at me," Itachi said in a deadpanned voice. I saw Boruto turning his head to look at Itachi from the corner of my eyes, right when he slapped me behind the head. I almost choked on my broth.
"Jerk who can't mind his own business," I muttered through gritted teeth, glaring daggers at him when he sat down innocently next to Boruto. Okay, Ichiraku's limit was six customers at the same time, it was filled already.
"I'm sorry, I haven't introduced myself," he told Boruto with a kind smile. "My name is Uchiha Itachi."
"Boruto," my nephew replied. "So...Sasuke-san and you..."
"We're brothers," Itachi confirmed with a nod. He ordered his usual salt ramen and actually...Boruto seemed really intrigued. "I hope he wasn't rude to you."
"I'm right here," Sasuke reminded him with a halfhearted glare.
One of the best thing in this timeline was their relationship. They still cared greatly for each other, hell when would Itachi not care with all his heart about Sasuke, but their relationship was healthy, like...regular siblings. There were teasing, partnership or them trying to save their own skin when it came to dealing with their parents, but they were united and trusted each other.
Most importantly, Itachi was not treating Sasuke like a kid in need of constant protection, and Sasuke had long realized his brother was not perfect but a regular man who had his own weaknesses.
"Did something happen?" Naruto whispered to me, leaning toward me. I swallowed my boiled egg.
"He can't mind his own business," I replied in a hush tone, Boruto talking to Itachi.
"That man was suspicious," Itachi said dryly.
"The one with the hat?" Naruto asked with narrowed eyes. Itachi and him shared a knowing look. "Yeah, I agree, he's sketchy."
"Make her understand that," he muttered, gesturing at me disdainfully with his hand.
"That's my Master..." Boruto mumbled.
And his adult brother.
Apart from a few comments thrown here and there between Itachi and I, lunch was pretty calm and nice. Of course I wasn't 'mad' at Itachi, if anything I was way too happy to my liking to know he was looking out for me, but if it meant keeping him at bay until Sasuke and Boruto went back to their reality then I would pretend I was mad at him.
Dai left in the afternoon and I walked him to the gate. The rest of the day was pretty casual, Boruto and I sticking to Naruto and Fū. When the night fell on the village, I discreetly left through my window. I met up with Boruto and Sasuke in the forest.
Sasuke wasn't alone.
"Shi...sui?" He raised his hand as a greeting.
"Akane, don't go around allowing Uchihas to look into your memories," Sasuke scolded me sternly. I averted my eyes.
"Well he had a kunai at my throat!"
"When someone blurts out Danzou is going to steal my eye out of nowhere I tend to be suspicious." I pointed at my face.
"At this face?"
"Especially at your face." I rolled my eyes. He looked at Boruto. "Huh, the resemblance is striking."
"Your...your name is Shisui?"
"Uchiha Shisui, of the Body-Flicker at your service!" he introduced himself, his thumb pointed toward himself and a toothy, confident grin.
Surprisingly, it was Sasuke who sighed.
"Hey, I don't care if you're an adult or not, I'm still older than you."
"You're just...like I remember you to be," Sasuke whispered almost fondly. Shisui noticed too as he seemed surprised.
"Shisui is an old friend of mine and someone important, so I named your cousin after him."
"Heh...that's why he always said he wanted to be the fastest ninja in the world." I shrugged and Shisui grinned even more.
"Anyway, he spotted me," Sasuke said, explaining his presence here. "And he recognized me from your memories."
"So much for being here incognito," Boruto commented sarcastically.
"If someone kept her mind to herself."
"For fuck's sake, gimme a break!" I exclaimed, exasperated. I pointed at Boruto. "You didn't hear me curse."
"What curse?" I ruffled his hair.
"Anyway, there was nothing out of ordinary today, Naruto and Fū both went home as usual tonight."
"Alright. I'll be there tomorrow as well." We went our separate ways, making sure Boruto went back to Mom's safely.
"So, where did you see him?"
"Watching over the Compound." I gazed at the stars as we turned around the corner of my street. "It must be very...weird." He looked at me. "Are you okay?"
"Me? I'm...fine, better than when I saw you. I mean...it's like seeing family I haven't seen for a long time." He put his arm around me and pulled me in a side hug.
"And overall?" I shrugged.
"Better. In a way...seeing them here...I don't know, but I'm less depressed." He grinned at me.
"Well that's good then!" We stopped in front of my building. "I'll keep my eyes opened tomorrow."
The next day, a very pale guy appeared, floating in the sky. Sasuke was there with me, Boruto, Naruto and Fū. I frowned at the red fish rod and obvious Byakugan he had.
"It is unexpected," he said in a mocking tone. "Unexpected to be here but ultimately, I'm the winner." He looked at Naruto and Fū. "I've been wanting to meet you, Uzumaki Naruto."
"You know me?"
"I guess I'll have to hunt down the annoying insects."
Well, he would be good practice if Kaguya ended up being revived.
Hey! Thanks for reading and leave a review to tell me what you thought of this chapter!
