Chapter 3: Castaways

MARCH 30, 2020

7:30 PM

SCENE: GREY SLOAN LOBBY

(Amber is in the lobby in her casual clothes and leopard pattern mask with her dark hair in a bun. She is on the phone by the front desk elated by what she is hearing before she is supposed to go home)

Amber: (Talking to someone on the phone) Your sure? You're not making this up? …(Smiles) Oh my god, you are literally giving me the first bit of good news since the year started. Are there anymore people inside? …Okay, okay I'm headed out now thank you so much I will forever be in your debt. (Hangs up) Yes!

(Jo in navy scrubs and Andrew in casual wear walk by her)

Amber: Oh! Just the person I was looking for.

Andrew: (Assuming she's talking to him) I'm already clocked out and headed home.

Amber: (Disdain towards him) Oh no I was talking to Jo you know the one person I feel hasn't disappointed me and I don't feel unbridled anger towards so you can just walk away now.

(Andrew sighs and leaves the women out in the lobby)

Jo: What's up?

Amber: I… (Looks around) I can't say not here.

Jo: Okay and why?

Amber: (Sighs) …I'll text you but you don't react in any way whatsoever do you hear me?

Jo: My reaction will be covered with this mask so I think we're good, go.

Amber: (Discretely texts Jo)

(Jo checks her phone and is shocked by what she reads)

Jo: (Gasps) N-

Amber: Jo don't, don't say a word. Even one person hears we're done for and don't get this contraband. I am headed there now and I will bring back as much as I can, no doubt there will be a limit.

Jo: (Gets an idea) Oh! You know what you should do, you should buy what you can, put on a different mask, go back, and buy it again. I mean it's not like the cashier would recognize you with these covering up 75% of our face.

Amber: Hmm at least there's one good thing to come out of all of this. I need to go store closes in half an hour and it's a fifteen-minute drive.

Jo: Oh my god go, go right now time is of the essence. Lives are literally at stake.

Amber: You don't have to tell me I'll bring back the best early birthday present ever.

(Amber quickly walks out of the lobby chuckling at her good fortune for once)

CUT TO PARKING LOT

(Andrew tries to start his bike for the fifth time but it sputters and doesn't start)

Andrew: (Takes his helmet off) Damn it!

(Andrew pulls out his phone to call Carina but it goes straight to voicemail causing him to groan. He is apprehensive on taking a cab due to the pandemic and tries to think of his options)

CUT TO SIX SPACES AWAY

(Amber walks to her car quickly laughing in joy. Andrew sees her and sighs at his only option to getting home and walks toward the car)

Andrew: (As he walks) Please don't let her run me over, please don't let her run me over, please don't let her run me over…

CUT TO INSIDE AMBERS CAR

(Amber pulls her keys out of her bag and starts her car. She looks up and is displeased to see Andrew in front of the car)

Andrew: My bike broke down; can you give me a ride?

Amber: (Scowls) Get out of the way.

Andrew: Carina is on the night shift and I can't take a cab. Look it's just ten minutes away and I won't ask anything from you ever again, please.

(Amber revs up her engine to scare Andrew who raises an eyebrow at her knowing she wouldn't kill him. Amber groans and looks at her watch knowing she's wasting time)

Amber: Arrogant son of a bitch. Get in!

(Andrew calmly gets in the passenger side while Amber glares at him)

Andrew: Thanks for not running me over.

Amber: Don't tempt me.

(Amber screeches out of the space and gets out of the parking lot as quickly as she is allowed)

CUT TO THE HIGHWAY

(Amber is driving on the highway in tense silence with Andrew next to her)

Andrew: Um so thanks for giving me a ride I know you don't want to go back to our-

Amber: (Angry) Your place not ours, I made sure of that in case you forgot.

Andrew: Believe me I didn't forget you made sure of that.

Amber: Mission accomplished.

Andrew: (Notices the route their taking) Amber wasn't that turn we just passed the way back to my place?

Amber: It is but we're making a pit stop first.

Andrew: Can't it wait? I kind of feel the urge to shower the day off me for the next hour.

Amber: So do I but this can't wait not even for a second. If I drop you off, I'll miss my one and only chance. So, despite me wanting to push you out to that hellhole this takes precedence.

Andrew: What does?

Amber: (Sighs) Well I know you'll follow me anyway and I feel the urge to tell you as a doctor instead of a woman that you screwed over let me make that perfectly clear. I got a reliable source telling me there was a recent shipment of disinfectant spray to Target tonight and they stocked the shelves ten minutes ago.

Andrew: (Shocked) Is this a joke?

Amber: (Irritated) Would I be joking about something of this magnitude?

Andrew: To get back at me I would think so.

Amber: Well, I'm not. I got a call ten minutes ago from one of my covid patients' grandson. He works as a store clerk and thought I deserved to know since his grandfather is out of the ICU thanks to me. I am driving like hell to get there because it closes in fifteen minutes and our window is smaller than the space inside the PPE's.

Andrew: (Unable to believe it) You're telling me that you have firsthand knowledge of where an air disinfectant is during a pandemic. And we're the only ones that can get there before a crowd beats us in the morning?

Amber: (Snippy) Huh what do you know I was wrong you are a good listener it's just as a boyfriend you have trouble with it.

Andrew: (Too happy to care and laughs) Yes! Yes!

Amber: I take it your excited.

Amber: (Smiles) Am I happy? I am resorting to using Windex to spray my room until now! (Chuckles) I am so glad I asked you for a ride.

Amber: (Disdain) That makes one of us.

7:50 PM

SCENE: PARKING LOT ACROSS THE STREET FROM TARGET

(Amber and Andrew get out of the car and walk quickly across the street)

Andrew: Amber do you mind telling me why you parked so far away from the promised land?

Amber: Andrew my car is in the six-figure pricing online and it is in tip top shape. Most of the stores including the mechanics are closed. Would you leave it open in a parking lot where those bozos can destroy it?

(Amber points at a couple of teenagers playing with the carts outside the store hitting cars as they play)

Andrew: Good point come on let's hurry we have ten minutes.

(Amber and Andrew quickly go inside the store where the lights are still on but the store is empty except for a security guard and a store clerk. They take the escalator to the second floor where home supplies are)

Amber: (Anxious as they walk to the aisle) Please be there, please be there, please-

(Amber gasps as they marvel at the disinfectant covering the shelves)

Andrew: (Exhales) It's beautiful.

Amber: Damn right it is. Limit to two? Okay that's good as long as I have one.

Andrew: At this point I'll take a whiff.

(Amber quickly grabs two cans)

Amber: Thank you Jacob.

(Amber goes downstairs to the self-checkout and purchases her items. She grabs her bag and waits for Andrew by the entrance)

FIVE MINUTES LATER

(Amber taps her foot and looks at her watch in annoyance. She groans and goes upstairs to find Andrew at the pharmacy surveying the almost empty shelves. Amber rolls her eyes and approaches him)

Amber: (Irritated) What the hell are you doing? I've been waiting for like five minutes I was this close to leaving you in here to rot.

Andrew: I'm looking for vitamins.

Amber: (Scoffs) Vitamins? You're holding us up because you think your gonna find vitamins this late at night in a convenience store during a pandemic? Are you really that obtuse?

Andrew: Okay do not call me obtuse I am being optimistic. I mean you told me there was disinfectant spray so I thought the same went for vitamin c or hell I'll take iron if I can.

Amber: Well, buy your melatonin and let's get the hell out of here I don't want to be stuck in here.

Andrew: Why would we get stuck? I mean do you really think they could just close the store while we're still in it?

(The lights on the second floor begin to turn off causing Amber and Andrew to look on in shock)

CUT TO THE ENTRANCE

(Amber and Andrew quickly go to the doors and are shocked to see they are not opening)

Amber: (Freaking out) Oh my god.

Andrew: (Points at the parking lot) Look the guard is still here yell, yell.

Amber: (Yells) Help!

Andrew: (Yells) Hey!

(They continue to yell for help but the guard doesn't hear them and gets inside his car)

Andrew: (Shocked) This can't be happening tell me this is happening.

Amber: (Tries to think positive) It's okay he's gonna see the car he has to.

Andrew: Amber your parked across the street.

Amber: (Angry) You know what if we're gonna point fingers we should point them at the hungry immune system that got us into this situation.

Andrew: (Looks at the parking lot) Oh god he's leaving.

(Amber looks and gasps at the guard driving out of the parking lot)

Amber: (Inhales and exhales) Okay let's not panic.

Andrew: (Tries to be calm) I'm not panicking.

Amber: (Snaps at him) Well, I am Andrew! This isn't exactly how I envisioned my night going, so thank you for this I hope your real happy!

Andrew: (Pinches the bridge of his nose) You know for the record this is not my ideal situation either okay? So how about we spend less time sniping and more time trying to figure out how to get out of here?

(Amber exhales and thinks for a moment before trying to push the door open by force with her upper arm)

Andrew: Okay we need to think with our heads and not our fists.

Amber: Right well this door is locked.

(Amber walks away from Andrew to search for a back door)

8:00 PM

SCENE: TARGET FIRST FLOOR

(Amber walks back to Andrew who is on his phone trying to call someone)

Andrew: Any luck?

Amber: No, the back doors are locked please tell me you are calling someone to come and get us.

Andrew: I'm calling customer service to see if they can send the guard back- (Gets answered) Yes hi! Um I'm Andrew DeLuca I wanted to ask you guys to send a security guard back to the Target near the gum wall in Seattle…Uh long story we're stuck in here…My friend and I stayed in too late and the guard left locking us in by accident so if you could just…No nobody's life is in danger.

Amber: (Frustrated) Oh my god hand me the phone.

Andrew: (Knows she will make it worse) No I am not gonna-

Amber: (Gritting teeth) Just give me the phone!

(Amber grabs Andrew's phone and talks to the person)

Amber: Hi this is Amber Karev I am stuck inside a store because of the gross incompetence of your employees. So, I am telling you to send that idiot security guard back here so we can get the hell out. If you delay us further, I am going to hunt you and that guard down and make it so you die before this pandemic takes you. (Andrew groans) Now can you send us someone to open the door? …Hello?

Operator: You've reached the automated phone…

Amber: (Scoffs) You-

(Amber grips the phone in anger and groans)

Andrew: What is it? Did they hang up?

Amber: No, they transferred me to some automated response system, 'press one for customer service, press two for returning items'

Andrew: (Groans) This night keeps getting better.

Amber: (Hangs up) Forget it let's call 911.

Andrew: No, we can't call 911.

Amber: And why not? We're trapped in here and their supposed to help with all emergencies.

Andrew: Amber we're trapped in a giant store with massive quantities of food, clothing and all the latest entertainment. How does that qualify as an emergency?

Amber: (Sighs and sees where he's coming from reluctantly)

Andrew: Exactly lets just call customer service again and hope they decide to send someone.

(Amber yells in anger and kicks a checkout counter surprising Andrew)

Andrew: Whoa, what is it now?

Amber: (Yells) I blame you!

Andrew: …You uh you blame me for pointing out flaws to your idea?

Amber: (Glares at Andrew) We are in a pandemic Andrew we're in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and you thought you could find vitamins?!

Andrew: Yes, because I was hoping that if they had disinfectant they could maybe, maybe have vitamins too. Are you gonna blame me for trying to be hopeful?

Amber: Yes, because you being hopeful has gotten us stuck here! (Groans) This was supposed to be quick and easy but no I had to give you a ride!

Andrew: (Offended) Carina is working the night shift and the cabs right now are collecting covid bacteria. You know the way to my house and you were in the parking lot too, I thought you would take me home and leave quickly. Do you honestly think I intended to ruin your evening?

Amber: (Chuckles darkly) It isn't the worst thing you've done to me; unlike you I can keep track.

(Amber groans as Andrew finally hits a breaking point with Amber)

Andrew: All right that's it I'm done I am done being your punching bag Amber. I've had it I have reached my limit with your snipes and your backhanded insults to me.

Amber: Great then you take the first floor and I'll take the third there's books up there to keep me company.

(Amber goes to move when Andrew steps in front of her stopping her)

Andrew: Nope we are talking about this we are gonna talk and fight and hopefully we can leave this store as amicable as we can be.

Amber: (Scoffs) No this is not the right place or time.

Andrew: I think this is exactly the right place and time. We are alone inside a store without any witnesses to the yelling or blood shedding that needs to happen. Both of our sisters are on the night shift, the cops are no help so we're gonna be here a while and I can't think of anything better to pass the time.

Amber: Then you obviously haven't read the Harry Potter books I'm gonna reread right now.

(Amber moves around Andrew who sighs and yells out as she walks)

Andrew: How long Amber?! (Amber stops) How long are you gonna be punishing me for?! I have apologized I have groveled I have taken every jab you throw at me without complaint these past two weeks! So how long am I gonna be your punching bag?!

(Amber gets frustrated and takes her mask off revealing her scowl. She turns around to face Andrew)

Amber: Don't you do that; don't you dare make yourself into a victim here! You weren't the one who was lied to, you weren't the one who was gaslighted by someone you thought cared about you!

Andrew: What? I would never gaslight you-

Amber: Yes, you did! You gaslighted me into believing that you were okay that you were taking your meds when you weren't. You manipulated me with your words and your facial expressions you manipulated me into thinking that I was crazy that I was overanalyzing. You made me feel like an idiot when you told me the truth and I was livid by not just you but by myself for being stupid and falling for this again.

Andrew: I lied because I was going back on them when Webber was diagnosed. I didn't lie to make you feel like an idiot I only told the truth of something that would happen later.

Amber: (Shakes her head in disbelief) God I have heard piss poor excuses but this one really takes the cake.

Andrew: It's not an excuse it's the truth.

Amber: What the hell do you know about the truth?! You lied to me to my face about taking your meds in present! Not in the future but in that moment when you came to my house you lied to me!

Andrew: I know that and-

Amber: (Angry) No! No, you don't! You don't know you can never know the pain of being lied to by someone you loved over and over again! My mom did the same thing you did only difference is that you did it better and I believed you! Do you have any idea how triggering that was?!

Andrew: I'm sorry that I triggered you I know that it was awful what you went through with your mom believe me I know.

Amber: No, you don't, you don't know what that pain was like for me you can never know.

Andrew: Really? Are you forgetting my dad and the hell he put me and my sister through?

Amber: Let me break this down for you Andrew that pain you had with your dad I had that my whole life. You had your dad for a week I had my mom for years. Before you I had years of that pain with my mom and brother. It was…indescribable, it was painful and it felt like I was the one losing my mind. You know how broken I am because of that and you didn't care.

Andrew: Of course, I care Amber. I didn't skip my meds just for the hell of it I skipped them because Richard's life was at stake.

Amber: There it is, that is why I am pissed at you. You skipped them because you felt it was the right thing to do. I don't care if you feel like you did it for the right reason you should have known how I would feel about it and you didn't care! You didn't care how I would feel you just went and decided to play hero and didn't give a damn about me! After all I did for you after I made sure you didn't get worse in spite of the fact that you have hurt me over and over again, I cared! And…and it was a waste because (Voice breaking) because you didn't care about me.

Andrew: (Sighs) Amber…I never intended to make you feel like I didn't care.

Amber: (Angry) I don't care what your intentions were because you are oblivious to the hurt that you put me through and you act like I somehow hurt you? What because your ego is slowly being damaged by my insults?

Andrew: This has nothing to do with my ego. I am aware of the pain you went through I may not understand it completely I didn't grow up the way you did but I understand it. You…you can't understand what you did after what happened in the lounge, you can't understand that I am in pain too.

Amber: (Scoffs) What did I do that caused you pain? What did I do that can measure up to the hell you put me through? Was it me thinking for myself for a change? Or was it me breaking up a relationship you had no real interest in?

Andrew: (Anger in his tone) You left a sticky note.

Amber: What?

Andrew: The night after Richard's surgery I went to my apartment expecting to find you there, expecting you to yell at me more but instead…instead I found all your stuff gone and a post it note saying 'keep the apartment'. Do you know how that made me feel?

Amber: (Petty) What, slighted, emasculated, had your ego taken down a boost?

Andrew: (Angry) You broke up with me on a post it and you think this is about my damn ego! You know if I did the same thing to you, you would be justifiably hurt.

Amber: (Still petty) Right because you were such a standup guy before I left that note.

Andrew: (Had enough) Amber do you think you are the only one that is having a hard time after we broke up? Do you think you were the only person in this relationship with feelings? You have…you have no idea… (Voice slightly breaking) what this break up has been like for me.

(Amber's scowl softens slightly as she sees the hurt in Andrew's eyes)

Andrew: I wanted to marry you, I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you but I didn't I couldn't because…because of me inheriting my dads' genes. I broke up with you the day I left because I loved you too much to let you go through this again. I could've run that day; I could've left you a note explaining why I left but I didn't. I didn't because I knew you deserved a face to face after everything that we have been through. I gave you a face to face because you deserved it as a woman that I loved and more importantly as a human being. I was respectful of the relationship we had and I honored it by ending it in a decent manner. I thought…I thought it's what you would do for me but…but instead you left a post it with three words and no conversation at all. (Sad eyes) I…I thought that us loving each other for the past year and half meant that you cared about me and how I am feeling. But you didn't because you choose to hurt me in the worst way you could think of.

(Amber looks down in guilt as Andrew sighs in exhaustion)

Andrew: You know what I'm gonna see if there's a shower in the employees lounge you can…do whatever you want.

(Andrew walks away from Amber who stands there numb from the fight before going up the stairs)

9:00 PM

SCENE: TARGET THIRD FLOOR

(Amber is leaning against the bookshelves rereading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Andrew in black sweatpants and a white t shirt spots her and goes up to her)

Andrew: Making yourself comfortable?

Amber: Might as well since nobody is coming to rescue us. (Looks up and notices his hair is wet) There are showers here?

Andrew: Yeah, employees lounge on the first floor it's by the bakery I used towels and soap from home goods they're on the table inside if you want to use it.

Amber: (Amused at his attire) And I see your taking advantage of the resources around us.

Andrew: Yeah well, I decided to do a little shopping while I'm here only I am buying it in the morning.

Amber: (Exhales) Great I'll be down in the lounge in a bit.

(Amber continues to read but Andrew continues to stand there with a conflicted look on his face)

Amber: Is there anything else?

Andrew: (Sighs) …I'm sorry Amber.

Amber: No don't it's not your fault we're in here I was just being-

Andrew: I'm not sorry for that I'm sorry for what I put you through and excusing it.

(Amber looks at Andrew in shock as he continues)

Andrew: I'm sorry, what I did was wrong. I tried to excuse it because I was trying to save Richard and convinced myself it would be okay because I would get back in my meds but…but I was wrong. I violated your trust, opened old wounds, and I did not consider that you would be triggered. Your right I didn't grow up the way you did and I think that's why I lied because I didn't understand how much it would hurt you. It was awful for me to not even consider you in this when I was trying to get back together with you and I just added more to your pain by lying.

(Amber looks at Andrew touched by his apology and her anger subsides completely)

Andrew: You can hate me for as long as you want, I am fine with that. But you deserve to know…I'm very, very sorry.

(Amber stares at Andrew as he walks away from her and goes to the second floor. Amber sighs)

LATER AT THE SECOND FLOOR

(Amber gets a towel, pajamas, shampoo, sponge and soap for the shower but stops on her way when something catches her eye. She goes to hair care and looks over the shelf of at home hair dye. She browses for a few moments before picking the one closest to her original shade)

LATER AT THE EMPLOYEES LOUNGE

(Amber mixes the solution together and looks at herself in the mirror with her dark brown hair down. She grabs the tint brush and strokes the first strand with the blonde hair dye)

10:00 PM

SCENE: FIRST FLOOR

(Amber gets out of the lounge in a red flannel pajama set with her hair wet and back to blonde. She hears music recognizing it as 'Message in a Bottle' by The Police. Amber chuckles and follows the music to find Andrew at the closed Starbucks sitting at a table playing solitaire with the music playing from a CD stereo)

Amber: You are hilarious.

Andrew: (Chuckles) Thanks I try to be.

Amber: (Grins) The song?

Andrew: I think it perfectly captures our situation don't you think?

Amber: I think 'Institutionalized' is the right music for this.

Andrew: (Chuckles) Yeah, I think being around all this commercialism will turn me into a corporate zombie. (Looks up and notices her hair) Whoa, back to blonde I see.

Amber: Yeah, it was time for a change. Brunette Amber was post Andrew and now blonde Amber is post covid so…

Andrew: (Eyebrows furrow) Isn't post covid Amber also before and during Andrew?

Amber: (Sighs) I guess if you want to get technical about it, the point is I need a change I saw it in hair care and decided to go for it. Unless you like the brown hair better.

Andrew: (Chuckles) No I missed the blonde hair I was praying you would get past the brown.

Amber: What? You said I looked good.

Andrew: Yeah, I lied so you wouldn't feel bad but since were not together I don't have to worry about that.

Amber: I thought I looked good as a brunette.

Andrew: You didn't the hair made your eyes stand out too much. It was like two blue orbs coming out of your head.

Amber: (Sits across from him) Charming. What are you doing?

Andrew: Playing solitaire and listening to music. My phone died so this is my way of passing the time.

Amber: What about sleeping?

Andrew: I'm not tired.

Amber: Ah…Andrew I'm sorry.

(Andrew looks up in surprise and pauses his music)

Andrew: What?

Amber: I'm sorry Andrew truly I…I'm sorry for the way I ended things with us. I was hurt and angry and I needed to get out as fast as I possibly could. I know you think I did it because I didn't care but it's the opposite actually. When I left you that note I didn't do it to hurt you I did it so I couldn't be hurt again. I knew that if I saw you again, I would cave just like I caved when you came back. And I didn't want to cave I couldn't cave because I couldn't take being hurt again only…only you got hurt instead. I did to you what Izzie did to Alex and…I am ashamed of myself for doing that. I am mad at Izzie for not treating my brother like a human being and giving him a face to face and yet I did the same thing. It's worse actually because she left a letter and I only left five syllables. You deserved a face to face because you are someone that I cared about deeply. You think that I hate you but I don't, no matter how awful I am or how mad I could get I could never hate you. Your someone who showed me what it was like to love and be loved. I never would've known that without you, I'm too cynical and I know firsthand how dark the world is but then you came and…cracked me open. I am grateful for you for what you made me feel and for making me know what love is. I was just so mad and focused on my own self-preservation that I had forgotten you were a person too and that your feelings mattered too. And I didn't make it better by being awful to you and making you hate me. If I had considered your feelings too…I would've handled things a little differently. So, I am sorry.

(Andrew looks at Amber touched and leans back in his chair sighing)

Andrew: I never would've gone into treatment. I'm too stubborn and I was too scared to admit I got the worst parts of my dad. I tried to push you away I tried to hurt you in any way I could so I couldn't admit the problem…but you never gave up. You just kept trying and you never gave up even though I wanted you to. (Amber looks at Andrew and grins slightly) You saved my life; I know that I can have this disease and not be my dad thanks to you. So, I don't hate you. I love you and loving you has saved me I'm just…I'm just sorry loving me caused you pain.

Amber: (Shakes her head) Loving you hasn't caused me pain if anything it helped relieve the pain that was already there. You loved me like no one else has and you made me feel like I can be vulnerable and safe. Even when you compared me to my parents, I still loved you because you let me know that it was okay to love someone with a dark side. I know now what love is like thanks to you and…I wouldn't trade the pain away if it meant losing the love that came with it because it is worth it. You are worth the pain it came with because your love has helped me in ways, I didn't think was possible. I could never hate you Andrew, I love you just…not in the painful way because that could never be possible.

(Andrew grins at Amber gratefully and she grins back)

Amber: Do you want to play some poker?

Andrew: (Chuckles) No I know better than to play a game you will beat me at continuously.

Amber: (Shrugs) Just trying to pass the time with you but I guess I'll pass it on my own with Harry Potter upstairs. See you in the morning.

(Amber stands up to leave and Andrew's interest is suddenly piqued)

Andrew: It really helps pass the time?

Amber: (Grins) You'll feel like you're in a magical world.

Andrew: (Puts the cards down and stands up) Sounds way better than this world, which one should I start with first?

Amber: The first book Sorcerer's Stone, prepare to be amazed DeLuca.

(Andrew chuckles and follows Amber upstairs to the entertainment section)

12:00 AM

SCENE: ENTERTAINMENT SECTION

(Amber and Andrew sit on the display couch drinking wine. Amber is reading the Chamber of Secrets while Andrew reads the Sorcerer Stone with an intrigued look on his face)

Amber: (Grins at his face) See I told you it was fantastic. Which chapter are you on?

Andrew: Diagon Alley, his wand was from the same material as the one that killed his parents?

Amber: Yeah, it seems morbid now but it's gonna get worse trust me.

Andrew: And these houses your sorted based on personality?

Amber: Your learning, yep, I always inclined myself to Slytherin even though the house gets a bad rep. I'm hungry for power and I don't let anything or anyone get in my way unless they want to be cursed.

Andrew: Cursed?

Amber: Oh, right you haven't gotten that far yet just forget I said anything and let the surprises come when they come.

Andrew: (Chuckles) Okay well which house am I then? Since your knowledgeable about this stuff what would you put me in?

(Amber grins and looks at him in thought)

Amber: Gryffindor without a doubt maybe Hufflepuff as a second choice.

Andrew: Okay, why?

Amber: Well, you always want to do the right thing even if it gets you in trouble, that makes you both brave and reckless. The main traits of a Gryffindor, but your also hardworking and sweet which gives off Hufflepuff vibes too. I mean your lucky dude Gryffindor is exactly what-nope never mind not gonna say anymore not until you read further.

Andrew: (Amused) You know it's kind of weird to see you like this.

Amber: See me like what?

Andrew: Obsessed over something fictious. I mean in all the time I've known you; I've only seen you get this excited over surgeries. I mean I didn't think you could surprise me but finding out you're a closet geek you completely shook me.

Amber: (Scoffs and grins) I am not a geek I am a fan of several popular book series, big deal.

Andrew: (Smiles) Oh no you are beyond a fan, you dress up in costume and go to conventions, you. How come you never told me you were into this stuff?

Amber: I never told anyone.

Andrew: You told Rojas.

Amber: No! No, she walked in on me in costume and found out my secret. Big difference.

Andrew: Okay but still how come you never told me?

Amber: Would you have made fun of me if I did?

Andrew: Oh, definitely but I would get over the shock and immediately ask to see you in your sexiest costume. What is your sexiest costume?

Amber: (Chuckles) No I am not telling you that the less you know the better believe me.

Andrew: Oh, come on I won't tell anyone.

Amber: (Gives a really? Look)

Andrew: I won't, okay? What happens in this Target stays in this Target I swear to you and whatever fiction author you worship. Come on I want to know really just tell me please.

Amber: (Slowly considers it) …If I tell you and you mention this to anyone I will Avada Kedavra you.

Andrew: I swear not a soul will know except me, now come on.

Amber: (Sighs and downs her glass of wine) It was Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls, that was my sexiest costume.

Andrew: (Raises eyebrows in shock but keeps a composed face)

Amber: That's right you heard me I dressed up as a cartoon character. It was first year in med I was excited to go to my first New York Comic Con and…my friend suggested we go as a trio. We decided to go as the Powerpuff Girls because we all loved that show as kids and we all had different hair colors. Gia went as Blossom; Mabel was Buttercup and I…was the bubbly and blonde Bubbles. We had the short dresses and our hairs up in a very stupid way. The guys at the convention gawked at us and I'm pretty sure we gave an old man a heart attack on the way due to how our legs were out and on display. There now you know.

Andrew: (Purses his lips and tries to keep his composure)

Amber: (Rolls her eyes) Go ahead I won't hit you.

(Immediately after Andrew snorts and laughs very loudly. His laughter echoes throughout the empty floor)

Andrew: (Still laughing) I'm sorry it's just-

(Andrew continues to laugh hysterically. Amber grins slightly and pours herself another glass as Andrew continues to laugh. Andrew's laughter dies down after a minute and he takes a deep breath before exhaling)

Amber: Are you done?

Andrew: (Sighs) Yeah, I'm good pour me another glass please.

(Amber pours him more wine)

Andrew: Please tell me you have pictures.

Amber: I do but I never put them on the cloud I develop them physically and delete the evidence after.

Andrew: (Groans) Dammit and there goes me seeing you in a ridiculous outfit with other ridiculous looking people.

Amber: It's stupid yeah, I get that. I mean I'm a freaking doctor and I spend a quarter of the year preparing a costume and going to conventions collecting funko pops and getting autographs. It's silly and childish and if I didn't do it, I would laugh harder than you. I completely understand why you make fun. But Andrew I also understand why people love it. It isn't just a hobby for me it's also a reason why I am where I am today.

Andrew: What do you mean?

Amber: (Sips wine) I mean Harry Potter resonated with me from the first time I ever picked up the first book. I mean yeah it has magic and wizards and werewolves-

Andrew: (More interested) There are werewolves?

Amber: Oops spoilers sorry. But yeah, it's completely fiction but what's not fiction is how much I relate to Harry on a personal level. I mean his parents were killed and he was tormented by the only relatives he had. Does that remind you of someone else's origin story?

Andrew: (Looks at Amber thoughtfully)

Amber: Exactly, Harry had a childhood from hell but he didn't let it bring him down. He never gave up on himself even when he was living under the stairs. He took the first chance of leaving home and searching for his identity in a strange yet magical world. I started to think that maybe just maybe I could find something better thanks to him. Harry wasn't real but reading about how he overcame all the tragedy, the abuse and grief and became a hero made me feel like I could do the same. I mean I passed the freaking MCAT for God sakes I'm a surgeon when most girls from my neighborhood end up as cafeteria ladies. So, don't make fun, okay?

Andrew: (Sees her in a new light) Okay I'm sorry I didn't know it meant that much to you.

Amber: Well now you do…besides it didn't hurt that my legs looked great in his outfit.

Andrew: (Exhales) Of that I have no doubt. All right hearing you defend it so passionately makes me want to read it more.

Amber: (Chuckles) Great glad I could seduce you to the geek side. You know who you should dress up as for comic con?

Andrew: (Smirks) Who?

Amber: Jon Snow you would be perfect, your both pretty, you both have fantastic beards and you both know nothing.

Andrew: (Chuckles) I'll keep that in mind for when the pandemic is over and comic con is back on.

Amber: You'll probably have read all the stuff I read by then.

(Amber turns back to her book and Andrew grins at her comment)

Andrew: You really think my beard is fantastic?

Amber: (Scoffs in amusement) Just read or I'll tell you who dies in the end.

Andrew: Okay.

(Andrew continues to read and Amber sneaks a glance at him and grins in amusement)

1:00 AM

SCENE: TOY SECTION

(Andrew and Amber sit on a table playing Operation. Andrew successfully removes the funny bone)

Andrew: (Chuckles) That's three bones for me and one for you.

Amber: Yeah, nobody likes a showoff DeLuca, my turn.

(Andrew hands her the tweezers. Amber carefully considers and decides to get the wrenched ankle. She carefully tries to extricate it but the game buzzes as she touches a side. Amber groans and throws the tweezers down)

Andrew: (Chuckles) Having fun?

Amber: No, I suck at this game even though I'm a freaking real-life surgeon.

Andrew: Don't feel bad I've got like three more years of experience than you. In surgery not in this game.

Amber: Yeah, that plus I haven't seen the inside of an O.R. in two weeks, two weeks! God, I hate covid.

Andrew: Yeah, that makes two of us…what was the worst moment in the ward for you?

Amber: (Sighs) Is there really a number one worst moment in there? It's an ICU ward for a virus that targets mostly the elderly.

Andrew: Just one that stood out to you in the most horrible way, I can tell you mine if you want.

Amber: (Shrugs) If it'll make you feel better, go ahead.

Andrew: (Sighs) It was my day shift at the covid unit five days ago, I had a 68-year-old male named Henry Bell. He had glass opacities and 90% O2 I put him on antivirals and oxygen it looked like it was helping. He had a wife outside with their two kids and three grandkids so when he was conscious, I set him up for a video chat. I told them…I told them that it looked like he was improving and they were so happy, they cried and thanked me and I felt…I felt like I was a doctor again. But then five minutes into the video chat…he coded with the computer still on and his family could see and they were freaking out on the other side. I uh I tried to resuscitate him and I…I didn't even know that the computer was still on until after he…

Amber: I'm sorry.

Andrew: Yeah, I went downstairs and told the same thing to Henry's family and they didn't blame me. They told me they knew how hard this was for doctors like me and they thanked me for trying but…

Amber: But it didn't lessen the guilt and self-loathing, I know. It's how I'm feeling every day.

Andrew: (Nods understandingly)

Amber: (Exhales) My worst moment was my first day in the ICU and it wasn't an elderly patient it was a young man. He was 35 years old and his name was Alan Tanning. A neighbor of his found him on the floor of his apartment barely breathing. He was taken to the hospital where he tested positive for covid. His sats were at 85 so we intubated him. The guy ran marathons and was young enough but he still contracted this damn thing and we put a tube down his throat. He didn't even last a day because…because he got pulmonary edema due to the virus and… (Voice breaking) He coded in front of me. I tried to bring him back I used 10 rounds of epi and shocked him 15 times but…but it was too late. I called time of death for the first time that day.

Andrew: I'm sorry that's awful.

Amber: (Nods and sniffles) You know why that was my worst moment? It's because I realized anyone can die from this including my brothers. I give those idiots a hard time whenever I can but if anything happens to them, I would be…I would be destroyed. And my mom is over 60 so she's vulnerable to this damn thing and I can't be there to make sure that she is safe and it kills me. My family is a nightmare but my worst nightmare is them being infected and dying inside those damn room's miles away from their loved ones. I have seen that Andrew up close and personal and I don't want that to happen to me or my family.

(Amber sniffles and wipes her tears as Andrew looks at her in pity and sympathy)

Amber: I'm sorry there's uh there's not a lot of opportunities to vent and we are the only people in a large store so I saw an opportunity.

Andrew: It's okay. If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one scared for your family right now.

Amber: (Sighs and realizes) I'm sorry, I'm so sorry I can't imagine how this is for you, especially you. I mean I know that what's happening here it's even worse where you were born. Is your family, okay?

Andrew: (Sighs) My cousins are young and healthy and wearing masks but…my nonna, my grandma she uh…she died because of this thing and two of my uncles are on the ventilator right now but doctors said they won't last long.

Amber: (Guilty) Oh my god I am so sorry Andrew.

Andrew: (Tries to be composed) It's fine it's the price of being in a country that has the highest rates of covid right now.

Amber: (Nods) Still it sucks…what about your father? Have you talked to him?

Andrew: (Chuckles darkly) Yeah and what am I gonna say? Follow the guidelines and wear a mask when he never followed the damn rules once in his life. I think that conversation would end with him hanging up and taking risks that will literally kill him. Sorry I know you don't want to hear this with your mom and everything.

Amber: It's okay if there's one thing, I understand it's unresolved anger towards parents. God knows I have that with both of mine.

Andrew: (Sighs) You know this is kind of nice, us being here in this store away from the world.

Amber: Yeah, even though I was against this I'm actually starting to warm up to this thing. I mean it's like our own personal Wonderland, now I'm just waiting for a purple striped cat and a white, red-haired man to come out and invite us for tea. Only instead of tea we get ice cream from the grocery aisle downstairs.

Andrew: (Grins) Isn't it a little too cold for ice cream?

Amber: It is never too cold for ice cream. Or you can drink hot chocolate from the Starbucks if you want something to warm you up.

Andrew: (Chuckles) You know how to operate the machine back there?

Amber: …No but that doesn't mean I can't try I mean it's not like I'll get fired if I screw it up. Or if you don't want to risk me blowing up a thousand-dollar machine we can always raid the candy aisle.

Andrew: Amber we can't eat candy this late at night that's at least two cavities coming in.

Amber: (Grins) Then we'll go to personal hygiene and brush our teeth. And if we feel crazy, we'll floss.

Andrew: (Laughs) I see your adjusting to this whole being locked inside a Target better than expected.

Amber: If anything, this is probably the best thing to happen to me this year. In fact, I may never want to leave.

Andrew: (Amused) Why not? I mean you've got everything you need and want right here what do you have at home that will beat this?

Amber: Human contact?

Andrew: Which is restricted right now.

Amber: That's true I don't think I'm leaving here I might just take up rent on the third floor that's where the books, movies and beds are.

Andrew: The lease will probably be harder to get out of than mine so…

Amber: (Sighs) You know it's really sad.

Andrew: What is?

Amber: That…I'll probably never get to do the things that I've wanted to do my whole life because of covid. I mean I seem like this cool and settled girl-

Andrew: (Chuckles over the irony)

Amber: (Smacks his arm) Shut up. I'm whining about how I'll never do the things I want to do because I waited too damn long and a pandemic is taking chance of doing those things before, I'm 30.

Andrew: Okay well uh what do you want to do before your 30?

Amber: (Thinks carefully) Well I want to travel, not go out and quit my job and travel the world just…go to nice places for vacation every year. I mean the nicest vacation I've been in was New York.

Andrew: And you hate New York.

Amber: I do with a passion and I am astonished that I spent four years there with most of my sanity intact.

Andrew: So where would you go for your vacations?

Amber: …First place I'd want to go to is the Maldives.

Andrew: Wow nice, it's one of my favorite spots.

Amber: (Surprised) You've been there?

Andrew: Yeah, my dad took us when I was six it was for Carina's birthday. It is absolutely gorgeous; the water is clear and blue so you can see all the fishes without diving. The overwater bungalows make you feel like you're walking on water. And Banana Reef is out of this world, the first dive you take you see a school of fishes passing by and it's like a swarm of Dory's and Nemo's at your disposal I swear.

Amber: (Envious) Hmm see my mom once took me to a national park that was as big as this store and uh, she left me at the Marriot for two days because she forgot to take her meds. She didn't even realize that I was missing until she got the room service bill.

Andrew: Is this your way of saying I was a spoiled brat.

Amber: You said it not me.

Andrew: Okay what else is on your bucket list?

Amber: My list consists of learning to cook and well not great just edible, learn how to play chess, go bungee jumping, learn how to roller skate, win an amateur boxing match-

Andrew: (Intrigued) Wait a minute, roller skate? You want to roller skate?

Amber: (Confused) Um yeah, I want to see what it feels like, why?

Andrew: (Chuckles) Wait here.

(Andrew gets up and heads to sporting goods. Amber looks at him in confusion until he skates toward her on his own roller skates. Andrew holds a helmet and blue high-top roller skates in her size with a grin on his face)

Amber: (Eyes widen) No.

Andrew: (Grins) Yes.

Amber: (Adamant) No.

Andrew: (Adamant as well) Yes, come on I know how to roller skate I can teach you. It's the perfect place there's no witnesses to laugh when you fall on your butt.

Amber: (Chuckles) No I want to escape from this place without any head or butt injuries thank you.

Andrew: I'm a surgeon so I can take care of whatever injuries you have, come on Karev live a little. I mean at least you'll cross off one thing off your list before the year ends.

Amber: (Narrows her eyes at him)

Andrew: We'll take it slow okay and I'll be with you every step of the way. Come on let me do this one thing for you since I'm pretty much the reason we're in this mess. Just do it.

(Amber inhales and exhales thinking it over for a moment)

Amber: No pictures, got it.

Andrew: My phone is dead; I take it that's a yes?

Amber: (Sighs) …Yes.

Andrew: (Smiles) Yes! Okay put these on.

(Amber shakes her breath in fear before grabbing the blades and putting them on as she is sitting and straps the helmet on her head)

Amber: (Exhales uneasily) Okay.

Andrew: Okay grab my hands.

(Amber grabs Andrew's hands and he lifts her up. Amber leans forward a little and nearly slips but Andrew grabs her)

Amber: (Scared and in Andrew's arms) No I am not doing this put me back in the chair right now.

Andrew: Your good, your okay just uh just stand up straight for me and grab my arms, can you do that?

Amber: (Still holding onto him) No.

Andrew: (Chuckles) Yes you can okay just relax.

Amber: (Glares at him) Have you learned nothing from dating me? You tell a woman to relax and their stress meter skyrockets.

Andrew: Okay don't relax then just…trust me to catch you if you fall, how does that sound?

(Amber slightly calms down and slowly stands up straight holding onto Andrew's forearms)

Andrew: Okay good now for a beginner like you it's best to squat your knees so that you won't topple over. Not too much but not too little, okay?

(Amber nervously squats slightly still holding Andrew)

Amber: Good? Am I balanced?

Andrew: (Grins) Your good, now we start walking.

Amber: Walking? I thought the goal was to skate not walk.

Andrew: (Chuckles) That's later we walk first to ease you into skating. You gotta walk like a duck, small strides and gentle steps, lets do this.

Amber: (Sighs) Walk like a duck okay.

(Amber exhales and takes a first step without falling. She takes a moment and puts her other foot forward with Andrew gliding back as she moves forward)

Amber: (Still scared) Why did I let you talk me into this?

Andrew: (Chuckles) I'm still baffled by this too. Okay were doing a glide next you glide your left foot to the left slightly and keep the right foot on the ground.

Amber: (Whines) Promise me you won't let me go.

Andrew: I promise now come on lets glide.

(Amber exhales nervously and slightly glides her left foot causing her to glide forward slightly. Amber chuckles nervously as Andrew keeps a hold on her)

Andrew: (Smiles in victory) There see it wasn't so hard now the right foot.

(Amber glides slightly with the right foot and laughs as she moves faster now)

Amber: (Smiles) I'm skating, I'm actually doing it!

Andrew: (Laughs) Yeah, you're doing it.

(Amber looks up and her smile falls)

Amber: Wine shelves behind you!

(Andrew looks back and sees the shelves that they are gliding closer too close to)

Andrew: Oh god okay I'm gonna stop.

(Andrew makes a full stop while Amber is still skating causing her to collide with him and making him fall backwards on the floor with Amber on top of him)

Andrew: (Groans in pain) Oh that was-

Amber: Painful?

Andrew: Yeah, and here I was worried you would be the one with broken bones in this game.

(Amber laughs hysterically on top of Andrew who laughs with her as well. After a moment they calm down and look at each other face to face with their lips almost near each other aware of the sexual tension. Amber caves in and kisses him tenderly and pulls back seeing his slightly surprised face)

Andrew: (Exhales) Was that a drunk kiss?

Amber: (Swallows) You and I both know I don't get drunk off a bottle of wine.

(Amber gets off him and takes her skates and helmet off before going back on top of Andrew and kissing him. Andrew responds while kicking his skates off)

Amber: (Pulls back) Is this a bad idea?

Andrew: Definitely, do you want to stop?

Amber: (Lustful) Hell no.

(Amber continues kissing Andrew who stands up and lifts Amber up by her legs that she wraps around his waist. He carries her to the display couch where Andrew lies on top of her still kissing her as she snakes her hands under his shirt)

2:00 AM

SCENE: ENTERTAINMENT SECTION

(Amber lies on top of Andrew on the display couch. They are naked with a blanket covering them both)

Amber: (Sighs) Wow that was um…

Andrew: Number two?

Amber: Number one, it's number one from now on, this trumps the elevator.

Andrew: (Strokes Amber's back) Definitely there's something we can agree on for the night…you know I was afraid before we took that road trip to Ohio.

Amber: (Snuggles against Andrew's chest) Really? Were you afraid of breaking down and getting killed too?

Andrew: Not exactly. I was afraid that we would get sick of each other after being crammed together for days but we didn't. If anything, that trip brought us closer than ever, we got to learn more about each other and not have the world interrupt us. It's kind of like-

Amber: (Catches on) Kind of like now? Only difference is we're not on the road we are stuck inside a Target using so many items we'll probably never use after this.

Andrew: (Chuckles) Yeah. You know I always had this fantasy of us being castaways on a deserted island. We would be on a boat and run out of gas so we have to be on a stranded island for a few days until they found us but in that time-

Amber: (Amused) We would be naked all the time like Adam and Eve, hunt animals with our bare hands, and have sex non stop?

Andrew: Those are the guidelines plus me making a fire at night with no matches.

Amber: (Clarifies) I would make the fire.

Andrew: (Looks at Amber)

Amber: Which one of us has faster hands and enough rage to fuel the flame?

Andrew: (Grins and kisses her head) Yeah you would make the fire. We're castaways right now only-

Amber: Only we're inside a locked Target with unlimited resources you would never find in a deserted island?

Andrew: Yeah well, my point is in that fantasy…it's just the two us and we're happy and content just like we are now. Have you ever had that fantasy?

Amber: About being away from the world? Yes, constantly especially when I was living in my brother's loft but uh…I never imagined myself in seclusion with someone else. If I had a first choice in someone, I would be stuck inside a Target with…it would be Levi.

Andrew: (Snorts) Do I at least make the top ten?

Amber: (Teases) Definitely I'm just not gonna tell you what number you are so I don't ruin the moment.

Andrew: (Chuckles) I forgot how generous and sentimental you are.

Amber: (Chuckles) …It's probably too late to ask but did you get your covid results back from tonight?

Andrew: Don't worry I tested negative, you?

Amber: (Sarcastic) No I just tested positive and had sex with you to infect you for revenge.

Andrew: (Grins) Gallows humor?

Amber: It's what's keeping me sane…promise me you will never tell anyone that we had sex in a Target. And by anyone, I mean Jo and Levi and Alex, because they would never look at me the same.

Andrew: (Laughs) Don't worry what happens inside the Target stays inside the Target. Oh god of all the ways I imagined us getting back together this was not one of them I can tell you that.

(Amber's smile falls as she feels guilt for what she has to do. Amber sits up holding the blanket to her chest with a conflicted look on her face)

Andrew: (Sits up behind her) Are you okay?

Amber: (Tries to be composed) Yeah, I'm fine it's just…

Andrew: (Strokes her arm) Talk to me what's on your mind?

Amber: (Tries to find the right words) Andrew…what happened here was amazing and out of this world but…there's still a world out there with all our problems and reasons why we shouldn't be together.

Andrew: Amber I apologized for what happened and I am still taking my meds and-

Amber: I know and I believe you because I know your normal self from your manic self but…it doesn't change anything. It doesn't change how I wanted to break up with you before you got into treatment. I know that you're working hard to keep up with meds and therapy but…but I don't want to be a part of that lifestyle again.

Andrew: (Looks down in sadness) I love you I'm in love with you.

Amber: (Sniffles) Andrew…I love you too I will always love you but this can't happen and not just because of the mental illness. We hurt each other Andrew, we leave each other and insult each other and let our problems eat us alive, we don't work. We both deserve better than a relationship like that, we need to let each other go. I'm sorry.

(Andrew looks down in sadness as Amber puts her pajamas back on and leaves Andrew on the couch. Amber tears up as she walks away)

8:00 AM

SCENE: FIRST FLOOR

(After being found by a store clerk Amber and Andrew stand back-to-back in the self-checkout aisle buying the stuff, they used last night. They both silently walk back to the car the tension between them clear)

CUT TO ANDREWS APARTMENT BUILDING

(Amber stops her car in front of the building with Andrew at the passenger side. Amber and Andrew look at each other in conflict without saying a word to each other)

Andrew: (Clears throat) Thanks for the ride.

(Amber nods and Andrew gets out of the car carrying his items with Amber looking at him in guilt before driving back to her house)

10:00 AM

SCENE: GREY SLOAN HALLWAY

(Amber walks with Levi to the resident's lounge to get ready for work)

Levi: So where did you go last night? You weren't at home when I went to sleep even though you were already clocked out.

Amber: Um…I went to Target to get disinfectant spray.

Levi: (Gasps) Did you? please tell me you did.

Amber: I did.

Levi: Yes! Best roommate ever!

Amber: Yeah, and after that I went for a drive to clear my head.

Levi: (Happy voice) Oh and did anything else clear your head? Or maybe someone else?

(Andrew appears in front of them in navy scrubs looking at Amber who looks at him with guilt)

Andrew: Good morning.

Levi: Morning Dr. DeLuca congrats on becoming an attending.

Andrew: Thanks Schmitt give us a minute please.

(Levi leaves them both in the hall. Amber looks down at her feet)

Amber: So, you're an attending now?

Andrew: Yeah, I passed my boards two days ago I start my new job today.

Amber: That's great I'm happy for you, I'm less happy that your first year had to be during a pandemic.

Andrew: (Nods) Me too.

Amber: Well, um either way you look good in navy which isn't all that surprising.

Andrew: (Grins slightly) Thanks.

Amber: …Look I know your upset about what I said last night.

Andrew: No, I'm not mad. You were right what happened last night was us being away from our problems and now-

Amber: We are back on earth and our problems with it. Still, it wasn't right what I did, I seduced you and walked. That was wrong of me and I am sorry.

Andrew: Thank you.

Amber: …I don't want us to go back to what we were before last night us fighting and bringing each other down. I want us to move forward and…maybe we can start by being friends.

Andrew: (Eyes narrow in confusion) Were we ever friends?

Amber: I mean…no but maybe we can start and see how it goes from there. Does that sound like something you're willing to do?

Andrew: (Thinks about it) Yeah, I think so. Just because we couldn't make a relationship work doesn't mean we can't make a friendship work.

Amber: (Nods) Okay I uh I have a shift at the covid ward so…

Andrew: Yeah, go I'll see you up there.

(Amber walks past Andrew and heads to the lounge to get ready with Andrew staring at her as she walks)
