It was not what I was expecting.
The main job of my Division was to lend support to any Division in need, hence why we were spread alongside the Land of Lightning's borders with the Land of Frost. Taka, minus Sasuke, was looking for Kabuto from the intel we had. The minute they found him, Sasuke and Shisui were going to him. For now, I was sitting in front of Mifune-san, a map between us.
"If they can go undetected from the sensory unit, they must not be humans," Mifune-san stated.
"They're not, they're humanoid. They're the reason there are passwords in the Alliance, if they get a sliver of your chakra, they take your appearance, and you cannot make the difference between who's real or not." I put my finger on where Kitsuchi's unit was. "Many Iwa shinobi are in the Second Division, they'll be able to get these bastards out of the ground. We have a few platoons close to them, they'll go there first. It's only a question of time until we hear about the Edo Tensei."
"It is a frightening prospect. The summoner only needs a piece of DNA?" I nodded.
"Who knows how many people he has."
"Uzumaki-taicho!" I looked behind me. A kumo shinobi was panting. "The sensors felt several chakra signatures coming!"
"Big ones?" He nodded. "Got it." I stood up and looked down at Mifune-san. "I'm going on the battlefield, see what we're up against." He nodded.
"I'll stay here and remain focused on the underground humanoids." I nodded.
"Thank you."
I went to the edge of the forest, stopping next to Kou. His Byakugan was on.
"You have something for me?"
"Nothing good I'm afraid." I shot him a look. "If I'm not hallucinating, then Shimura Danzo is game."
"Oh come on," I cursed under my breath.
Kill him eight years before his time and now he was back.
"There's one who looks a lot like Sasuke." Izuna, even better. "Shit."
"What?"
"There's the Shodai's wife...and the Fourth's." I widened my eyes.
I could feel the anger from said Kage inside.
"That's troublesome." I looked on my right.
Fugaku-san was staring harshly in front of him, his arms crossed. I was surprised to see him in my Division, but nicely surprised. He was good to have on my side.
"There are a lot of these things coming too, close to where Haku and Sasuke's platoon is. And other reanimated shinobi from other villages, including some from Kiri."
"Nothing Kage-like?" He shook his head.
"Apart from the two Uzumakis and the Uchiha, no."
"Yeah well, there has been three jinchuriki of the Kyuubi in history and two of them are coming toward us."
"I'll take care of Shimura," Fugaku-san told me.
"Be my guest. SHISUI!" He raised his head from the branch he was in and jumped down. "Take care of Izuna."
"He's here? Again?" I nodded. "Damn, alright."
"Good. I have two relatives to take care of. Kou, stay put for now, see if anyone else comes."
"Got it!" We scattered.
Whether or not they still had their personality intact was a mystery, but they'd feel me, Mito would know what I was. I wasn't so sure about Aunty Kushina but...we'd see.
I ran for maybe ten minutes until I felt the first flare of chakra in the air. I jumped before the tree branch that emerged from the ground captured my ankle.
Branch? Wood?
"Mito does not use Wood Release, but like you, she knows her craft," Hashirama told me. "She came up with seals that can mix two chakra nature perfectly."
"I see, I tried that before too but never spent too much time on it."
"Point is, she's going to replicate kekkai genkai and you will not see it coming."
"We'll see about this."
I managed to locate the seal. As the wood was still coming at me, I threw a marker at the seal, teleported, and broke it. The wood crumbled.
"Yuurei-sama." I blinked and turned around, facing the old woman. I frowned as chains surrounded us before a barrier trapped me.
I looked above my shoulder. Aunty Kushina was there, the same green apron I remembered her to wear during her pregnancy.
"Fuinjutsu, Suiton, Fuuton, Yin Release." I knew oji-chan, and Hashirama too, probably felt like they were betraying their wives by telling me their skills but…
"Umiko was supposed to have destroyed it."
"The Fourth Hokage put the pieces back together without knowing what he was giving me access to."
"Who are you?" My heart missed a beat at Kushina's voice. They both still had their will.
"I know it's been eighteen years Aunty, but it hurts a little." I smiled sadly at her as she blinked, widening her eyes when I showed her Minato's kunai.
"Akane-chan?" she mumbled with quivering lips.
"Hey Aunty." I looked at Mito. "I also happen to be Mamiko's granddaughter." She blinked.
"Really?" I nodded.
"Yeah, it's really not the kind of family reunion I thought I'd ever had bu…"
"What about Naruto?" I looked back at Aunty. Her purple eyes were staring at the grass. "How...how did he grow up?"
"I'm not going to lie to you, he's had a shitty life for years. Nobody knew he was your son, just that he had Kurama in him, so the villagers made his life miserable." She widened her eyes in horror at this.
"You...did Aki-nee…"
"You know, when Konoha told us you were dead, they said Naru was as well. Mom wouldn't have move to Konoha without protection from Danzo, and they wouldn't have let her take their jinchuriki. Before I became a Yuurei, I met him when I was twenty-two, Mom never met him. Here, she has been his guardian for a decade now. He grew up well Aunty. He's an idiot, but he grew up well." She smiled a little, her hands on her heart.
"I see...it's good to hear." She looked at me up and down. "You're so big now."
"I am twenty-three and a half physically. Mentally, I'm closer to fifty than forty." I looked back at Mito. "Oh, and the Fifth Hokage is Tsunade-san." She blinked in surprise and smiled softly. "Alright, I'm sure you know it's the Fourth Shinobi War and you're not on the good side. I'm sorry, but...I'll try not to die."
"I do not wish to kill a descendant," Mito stated with sorrow, "but I can feel...my will disappearing…" Her black eyes turned white.
"Akane…" I furrowed my brows at Kushina as she was shaking. "Don't let us kill you baby, please."
"I won't," I whispered as her purple eyes turned white.
I summoned my nodachi, going into Negative Mode immediately. I couldn't afford to make the fight long, I was outnumbered by two powerful kunoichi, powerful enough to contain Kurama and who would know how to counter most of my jutsus.
I had to be quick and efficient.
I teleported away from the chains coming from the ground, trying to freeze Mito before sealing her. She was gone in a puff of smoke, and she engaged me in taijutsu. For an old woman, she was still scarily fast. I had to deal with her and Aunty using her chains from a distance. As she was holding the barrier up, she had Adamantine chains coming from her back too, making her immobile.
"Fuuton: Violent Whirlwind!" Well, fuck me, now I had a powerful gust of wind coming my way.
I dodged, but it bounced on the barrier and followed me, Mito adding a water jutsu to it. Now I had a several-meter high tidal wave coming my way.
"Itachi, teach me a Fire jutsu please." He looked up from Sushi with confusion.
"Sure, but why?"
"Fire is always useful, as a wind user I can make it more powerful on my own. I don't need something big and impressive, just...fire."
"You can't complain about my teaching though, or worst, whine and curse under your breath just loud enough so I can hear it."
"I never do that."
"Do you want me to remind you your genjutsu training?" I pouted. "That's what I thought."
"Please."
"I already agreed stupid," he reminded me.
"Fuuton: High Wind Technique!" Two gusts of wind appeared on my side, and I sent them forward. "Katon: Great Fireball Technique!" I was used to the heat now, but the fact I was in Negative Mode and didn't think of the thermal shock split my bottom lip and I felt the skin of my left cheek crack a little.
Still, the fire mixed with my wind matched the size of their attacks. They met and vapor filled the barrier. I went into Silent Killing and slipped to Mito.
My left hand was bleeding from the chain I had to stop but I had the Claw in her head. I found the kunai and removed it.
"Thank you," she thanked me as her face started to crack.
Yeah, I wouldn't waste time trying to use fuinjutsu on Uzumakis back from the dead. I didn't have the time to wonder if it would work, I needed them to go back to where they were from. Going directly to our secret forbidden jutsu was quicker and safer.
I looked at my hand as the chain vanished. There was a bad cut in it, bleeding quite a lot.
The barrier disappeared and Kushina ran at me. I gritted my teeth as I was stuck in a taijutsu fight with her. It was pretty equal until I grabbed a marked kunai and fought with it. I slashed her cheek and teleported to the other side of the kunai, ready to kick her in the back. She leaned forward, leaned on her hands, and stopped my leg between hers, throwing me on the side brutally. Then she put her chakra Suppressing Seal on me.
"Damn, you fight like me, it's awful!" I almost yelled with wide eyes, shocked. I never...saw her fighting before after all.
I was chained to the ground with her chains as she took the kunai I dropped. The chain on my neck started to squeeze me, choking me and I reached for it automatically as she straddled me, raising the kunai. I was about to use the Claw, even if I didn't want to use that on her but thought of something else instead.
I managed to take the picture I had in my pocket, of Naru, Mom and I in front of the Academy. I showed it to her as the kunai was just above my heart and gulped. She stared at it for a few seconds before I saw a tear rolling down her cheek.
"Na...ruto…" she stuttered. Her eyes went from white, to purple, to white and she rolled on the side.
The chains disappeared and I took a deep breath. I sat up and looked at Kushina, who was on her knees, her hands on her head. She was groaning.
"Get…" There were waves of blue with tint of red chakra around her. "GET OUT OF MY HEAD DATTEBANE!" I was sent back as her chakra dispersed violently.
There was not a sound. I jumped on my feet, noticing how Aunty was looking up, her face cracking more and more.
"They really pissed me off." She grinned proudly at me. "Now, what's the face for Akane? Your awesome Aunty beat the bad guy!" I still looked at her with sorrow.
She sighed a little and picked up the picture. I accepted it when she handed it to me.
"Thank you, seeing him...brought me back." I put the picture back in my pocket. "Sorry for...almost choking you."
"Don't worry about it." Her soul was suddenly above the sacrificed body used to bring her back. "Aunty…" She shook her head.
"It's fine, there's nothing to say. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see the woman you've become. Now…" She frowned, glancing at me firmly. "You have to win this war." I nodded.
"Yes, we will."
"Don't come up too quickly."
"Noted." She waved at me one last time before she disappeared.
I took a deep breath, slapped my cheeks a little to get rid of the overwhelming feelings I had at the moment and took off to find Fugaku-san. When I found him, Danzo was apparently stuck in a powerful genjutsu.
Fugaku-san did wipe the blood that left his eye after all.
"He was not brought back with any sharingan."
"Well, he stole them," I said idly, kneeling next to him. I sealed him before covering him in ice. "Alright, let's go check on Shisui, Izuna is not nothing."
Izuna was powerful. Shisui too, but I wanted him to keep as much energy as possible. With Fugaku-san and I, the three of us managed to neutralize Izuna, the two Uchihas using their sharingans to give me as many openings as they could.
I still would have a bad bruise on my ribs. I was just done tying a bandage around my bleeding left hand that Fugaku-san put a knee on the ground.
"You okay there?" I asked him, eyeing him warily.
"Yes, I'm fine."
"You've been stuck behind a desk for too long Fugaku-san," Shisui told him with a grin, getting a dark glare in return. "And you're not as young as you used to be."
Well...he was fifty this year. I mean, it was kind of weird to think my boyfriend's dad was...technically...two years older than me.
Weird to think about.
"Let's not linger here," I stated firmly before we left.
We got caught in a fight against White Zetsus. I went to Kou, protecting his back. There already were many people dead, on both sides.
"The Seven Swordsmen appeared to the Third Division, alongside a few people with kekkai genkai," Kou told me, using the Gentle Fist to send a White Zetsu away.
They had no water in them, so my Hyouton was not that much useful. I used Suiton and Fuuton instead to get rid of them.
"Something else?"
"Your brother is among them apparently." I cursed. "It seems like there is something big in the desert too."
"There are big fish for the Third and Fourth Division, and they sure don't seem to want to let us go help them."
"I wouldn't be surprised if you were targeted and all that." I sighed, stabbing a Zetsu in the chest.
"Me neither, sadly."
I'd be stuck here for a while; I wouldn't go anywhere until Kabuto was located anyway.
Let's hope it was better with the others.
"Snow?" a Suna shinobi said in surprise.
Kakashi frowned at the snowflakes. They were...there was chakra and…
He widened his eyes when he understood.
"Itachi, cover!" Kakashi quickly made shadow clones as Itachi used his Susanoo in a defensive mode. "Doton: Earth Style Wall!"
The explosions were deafening. The screams of the poor souls they couldn't protect in time rang loudly in his ears. As the smoke slowly vanished, his walls crumbling down, a small figure landing next to Zabuza.
As if seeing him, when he died for his village four years before, was not enough. He had had a reaction when he told him Haku was alive and well, now wielder of Nuibari, but then his personality was put under locks as he was turned into a mindless puppet.
"Kakashi-san, is that…" Itachi trailed off, now next to him. Sweat ran down the Hatake's temple.
"Yes, yes that's him."
The gray eyes were white. It was...disturbing to see a child on the battlefield, but the dead people around them just proved how dangerous he was. The red hair, lightly blown in the wind, was matching with the blood and human remains on the ground.
"It's Fubuki, there's no doubt about it." Gari, an Iwa shinobi using the Bakuton, and Pakura, a Suna kunoichi using the Shakuton appeared as well.
And White Zetsus, of course.
"They're going for emotional wounds," Itachi stated coldly, his eyes not leaving Fubuki.
He knew Akane had to fight him before, he was glad Fubuki was now in front of them. Although, he wouldn't be surprised if Akane, Sasuke, his father or Shisui knew the people fighting against them right now.
"Itachi, I need a favor."
"Now?"
"I need to take care of Fubuki, alone. Just," Kakashi shot Zabuza a look. "Take the lead for now."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes." Itachi pursed his lips.
Kakashi was there when Fubuki died but…
"Alright then." He covered Kakashi as he led Fubuki elsewhere.
"What does it look like Kakashi? It's a seal," Ushio explained with a frown.
He was confined in a study in the Kage tower and had a room there as well. He was only allowed to go to these two places.
"I know it's a seal," Kakashi replied coldly. The less he spent time with Ushio, the better.
He looked down at Akane, who just cleared her throat.
"Why are you here? You leave tomorrow, don't you?"
"Yes, but...I wanted to see it finished myself."
"What is it then?"
"A...mind seal?" Kakashi glared at Ushio, who raised his hands in defense. "It was my idea Kakashi, he just...is an expert in this field, I should know."
"What is it then?"
"Edo Tensei, pain in the ass, do we agree?" Ushio asked rhetorically. "I did some research, as well as taking into account what Akane knew already and…"
"You found a way to control their minds instead of Kabuto?" Ushio looked at him coldly.
"Look brat, I may have killed my son, but it doesn't mean I enjoy hearing he's used like a killing puppet by some guy with a God complex. Now, are you willing to shut up and listen to me?" Akane looked up at him curiously.
He sat down without a word.
"That's what I thought," the oldest Uzumaki stated firmly. "So, essentially, the Edo Tensei is a summoning jutsu, you summon a soul from the Pure Land and bind it to a body so that it has a medium. That being said, if you want a mindless summon, then you need to go further and suppress the personality."
"Minato-sensei knew a technique to break the link between a summoner and their summons."
"Yeah, I know it too," Akane pipped up. "It works if it's used on the summoner, and once we get him we want him to stop the jutsu, not just stop controlling them."
"It's where I come in." He showed them the paper tag he had. "It's a mind seal, sure, but not for control. It's the total opposite. The thing most people get wrong about fuinjutsu is that it's just to seal stuff. Come on, if the main strength of the Uzumaki clan was to seal your whole house in a scroll we would have been destroyed way before it happened. No, we use fuinjutsu like an electrician uses a circuit. Here, it's just a glorified chakra circuit that cancels any indication that the reanimated people cannot have access to their own free will."
"The chances of us being confronted by people we knew are too high for comfort. I mean, skilled shinobi are good and all, but skilled shinobi we knew personally and could make us drop our guard? That's even better. If I don't see onii-chan...you will." Akane sighed. "Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Rin-nee or Aunty Kushina were back from the dead as well."
"I honestly can't say how much input Obito has in who is brought back or not, but I'd say none. Still, anyone close to Naruto because he's a jinchuriki might be more of a target than the rest," Ushio said. "And now, Akane as well."
"It is a complicated seal to make, and anyway I don't think it would be good to have too much so...think before using it," the kunoichi advised him, standing up. "I know I will. I don't...the dead shouldn't have to meddle with the business of the livings, having Edo Tensei reanimation fight with us might sound good but...it's wrong, it feels wrong. They shouldn't fight in this period, sealing them is...better in my opinion but...you never know what could happen. It might save your life."
He'd use it. They brought back an eight-year-old child, and while he didn't want Fubuki to experience war while he was already dead, he probably wanted to know what happened after he died. It had been nineteen years after all.
They stopped in a clearing away from the other fights. Kakashi put a foot in front of the other, his fists clenched and raised in front of him. Fubuki imitated him.
"No!" Kakashi opened his eyes slowly.
Sensei and the kids' parents were away for a few days, so Team Minato was on babysitting duty. He had been reading quietly in the living-room when Akane came in the room, staggering on her short, chubby legs. She somehow pushed a chair to the sink and filled her own cup of water.
Unfortunately for him, she saw him as she landed on her butt on the floor.
"Kashi-nii!"
"Don't be loud." She grinned at him as she ran to him, climbing on his lap. "Yeah sure, don't ask for consent or anything."
"Whatcha doin'?"
"Reading."
"Why?"
"Because."
"Why?" He didn't answer. She pouted.
He wasn't Obito, he would not entertain the brat like this.
So, the next morning, when Fubuki, Obito and Rin found them in the living-room sleeping, Akane clenching his shirt, of course the two boys would be outraged.
"It's not fair, I'm her favorite!" Obito whined, Kakashi deadpanning at him.
"I'm her actual brother," Fubuki reminded him. Obito waved him off. "Rin-nee!" Rin giggled and picked Akane up as she yawned.
"Come on Aka-chan, time for breakfast."
After breakfast, he found himself in front of Fubuki outside. Akane was perched on Obito's shoulders.
"She fell asleep, that's all."
"Huh huh."
"You're overreacting." Fubuki rolled his eyes. He put a foot in front of the other and raised his fists in front of him.
They traded blow. Fubuki was strong for a kid, there was no doubt about that. He'd use Suiton to turn his Doton into mud.
It lasted for five minutes, the both of them just panting and getting dirt on them.
"Hyouton: Freezing Tech…" Kakashi was ready to jump away from the wet ground, but Fubuki couldn't finish his sentence.
A coughing fit started. The boy was quickly on his knees, hugging his shirt as Rin ran to him, like Kakashi.
"Onii-chan?" Akane called him worryingly, trying to get out of Obito's arms.
"Akane, let's go back outside.
"But Obito-nii…"
"They got your brother, don't worry," the Uchiha assured her with a nervous smile.
He took her back inside, not without shooting them a worried look.
"I told you no Hyouton," Rin scolded Fubuki, who was staring at the sky with a deadpan.
"I know, but...it was fun...it's better to spar with Kakashi-nii than Obito-nii."
"I'm sure," Kakashi droned, crouched next to him. "But I don't think it's good big brother protocol to make your sister this worried." Fubuki pursed his lips and averted his gray eyes to him.
"...I guess you're right. There are things she does not need to see...ever." Kakashi and Rin exchanged a quick look.
As if they didn't know that already.
"Is the war going to end soon?" the Uzumaki asked them quietly, slowly shutting his eyes.
"I'm sure we'll find a way to get along soon," Rin told him with a bright smile. He smiled back weakly.
"O...kay…" He was quickly asleep.
Kakashi picked him up and put him in his bed without a word.
This time, his Hyouton was not interrupted by a coughing fit. Instead, Kakashi dodged like he could the spikes of ice coming from everywhere. He left a clone to be killed as he went underground. When he appeared just beneath Fubuki, the child already had a wall of ice between them, Kakashi's fist going in it.
The jounin winced as he knew some of the bones were broken and jumped away. Yes, now he no longer was burdened by his disease…
He summoned his pack.
"Yo Kakashi, wha...wait, that kid, is it?"
"Yes Pakkun, it's him." The pug looked at Fubuki. "I need you guys to keep him from moving."
"Roger that Kakashi. Guys!" They dispersed.
Fubuki was a prodigy, and no longer was hindered by his disease, but he remained a kid. A kid he had trained and sparred with a lot in the past.
He knew his tactics, much like his pack.
"Got him!" Pakkun said as he was biting his neck.
Quickly, Kakashi ran in front of him. Before he could fight back, he put Ushio's seal on his forehead. It activated on its own, sinking into his forehead completely before the tag, now blank, fell to the ground.
There was not a sound as Fubuki's head was facing the ground.
"Pakkun?" Kakashi pursed his lips. Yes, his voice was so, so young, much like Naruto's and Sasuke's before.
"...Yo kid." Fubuki raised his head and blinked his stunned, confused gray eyes at him. He cocked a brow and tilted his head on his shoulder.
He always kept to himself how much Akane could remind him of her brother sometimes.
"Kashi-nii? Is that...you?" Somehow, he found the strength to smile, even if memories of Fubuki's bloody body kept flashing in his mind.
"Hey Fubuki." He blinked at him and looked around as the dogs let him go. Then he clenched his fists.
"Am I dead? I remember seeing you running away with my sister and Dad used his chains so I...ran straight between them and you." He looked at him up and down. "And you're old."
"I guess that shinobi wise, thirty-two is old." The Uzumaki widened his eyes before counting on his fingers. He shook his head.
"Wait, so...nineteen years? This is...nineteen years in the future!? Well...I guess not for you but…" He ran to him and grabbed the bottom of his jacket. "What happened!? Is Akane okay? And Mo...Oh my God, Mom…"
"...Akane is still alive and kicking as a twenty-three-year-old. Akiko-san is well too, it was...hard but, she's fine now. Taking care of Naruto helped a lot."
"Naruto? That's a...Minato-ji-chan, wasn't it?" Kakashi nodded. "So...it's his and Aunty Kushina's…"
"Son, yes, who's eighteen in two days."
"Why would Mom take care of hi…" Kakashi looked at him with sorrow and he clenched his fists. "Oh, so they're dead as well."
"I wish I had the time to tell you what you missed, but we're in the middle of the Fourth Shinobi War. It's…"
"I see. You...brought my mind back so…" Fubuki looked up at him, now serious. "What do you want me to do until my time is up?" Kakashi put his hand in his red hair.
"Now, it's an issue for the living, so your only job is to stick with me and help me keep as many people alive. Lucky for us, you might be able to give us information if more shinobi from Kiri from your time appear." He nodded firmly. "And when I say you stick with me, I mean it. I don't want someone to seal you when I struggled to break out the mind control." Fubuki just grinned sheepishly.
"I'll try my best!" Kakashi shook his head and took off.
He glanced at Fubuki by his side from the corner of his eyes. It was painful, yet so nostalgic and familiar he did not mind the ache in his chest at seeing a child he failed to protect long ago.
Hey! Thanks for reading and leave a review to tell me what you thought of this chapter!
