I sealed a White Zetsu away without stopping. I had started to see lost weapons and broken trees half an hour ago, and now stranded White Zetsus. I couldn't really sense anyone nearby; I still had some kilometers to do but…
I shot a quick look down. Bodies that used to be people from the Third Division. I furrowed my brows and jumped down.
These holes…it was the Houzuki clan's Water Gun technique.
I kept running, speeding up when I recognized Gai-san's chakra signature. I frowned when I had him in my sight. Sai was with him, as well as Lee and a body was sealed by Sai.
"Akane-san?" Sai said, surprised to see. I didn't stop, jumped above them and grabbed the Konoha shinobi by the throat with my left hand.
He immediately turned back into a White Zetsu and crumbled to dust. I then went to the Kumo kunoichi and Iwa shinobi to do the same.
"The question on whether or not she's the real Akane is answered then." I turned around to look at Gai-san.
"Hi," I greeted them awkwardly, blinking at them. "Apparently, Itachi contacted HQ to ask them for help regarding Mangetsu?" It seemed to surprise the jounin as well, but Gai-san got his composure back quickly.
"We all split up last night. He should be with Terumi still."
"Kakashi?"
"He left to gather the stranded ones, those still alive of course." I nodded. "But I know Kakashi told Itachi they had to take care of Mangetsu and left me in charge there."
"I see." Or I could find Kakashi and tell him I was here to help, or I directly went to Mangetsu. "If you have a way to contact Kakashi, tell him I'm going to look for Mangetsu, I have a plan."
"They went south," Gai-san informed me. I nodded in thanks and left.
If I wanted to use the seal on Mangetsu, I needed to get to him and keep him solid. Hyouton, obviously, but he was quick and knew how I thought in battle. Even if he was not himself, I was pretty sure this stayed. So…Negative Mode? But if Itachi and Dai were around, it would impact them as well. My nodachi only? It could work.
Itachi totally could have dealt with him though and should have dealt with him already. If there were many people around, I could see why he couldn't go for Susanoo and stuff like that, but if it was just Dai, then he could and make it quick and not waste too much energy on it.
I raised my head when a huge wave of water could be seen in the distance, followed by the red chakra of Itachi's full Susanoo. I made the tiger sign with my right hand and barely connected to, not Itachi's but Dai's marker that the wave exploded the moment black flames appeared on it. The explosion destroyed the trees around and as I teleported, I felt the impact from where I was.
Dai had wide, panicked eyes when he saw me appear next to him inside Itachi's Susanoo.
"You came?" he asked me, a little bit shocked. I just looked at him firmly.
"Apparently, you needed help? I doubt that." We landed smoothly on the ground as Itachi dissipated his Susanoo. Before Mangetsu could flee in any water nearby, I took my nodachi and froze it with a simple slash.
My ice didn't last when it was nearby Itachi's black flames, but Mangetsu wouldn't go near it either. Itachi looked at me above his shoulder, out of breath.
"They really sent you?" he asked me rhetorically.
"I asked to be sent, I was reporting something to HQ when you talked to Shikaku-san. So, why the hell would you need help exactly?" His eyes went to Dai next to me. "Well, that makes more sense now."
"Look, sorry, sorry, it's just…it's Mangetsu Uzu, and Kakashi-san told us about that seal your dad came up with and…"
"I was thinking about using it on him when I was told of the situation and…"
"Make it quick guys," Itachi reminded us sternly, using his Susanoo to protect us from Mangetsu's double water guns.
"Yeah, sorry Itachi." I looked at Dai. "So, you wanted to release Mangetsu's mind, so he'd fight with us?" He nodded. "Why didn't you ask for Kakashi's seal then?"
"He used it on your brother Uzu," Dai whispered to me. I blinked.
"Fubuki was brought back with the Swordsmen?"
"No, at first it was just Zabuza-san, him and other kekkai genkai users from other villages. Somehow, Kakashi-san managed to use his seal on him."
"Well, it kind of was for Fubuki anyway." Dai raised a brow at me. "I faced him in Taki, remember? If there was one person Kakashi would try to get back on his side, even for a short while, it would be my brother. He may have died at eight but fought better than the chuunins among our ranks. Anyway, you asked Itachi to stall sealing Mangetsu?" He shrugged. I hit him in the arm. "I hope it didn't cost people their lives.
"Once we had him, we took him somewhere else! Look, I know it was selfish to ask Itachi not to seal him immediately but…he deserves a better end!"
"You think I don't know that? He died in my arms Dai, he literally stopped breathing while I was speaking to him," I reminded him more harshly than intended. I took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of my nose. "It's just…it's a fucking war…I'm supposed to be on my way to join Naru and Killer B and help them deal with Obito who brought back some jinchurikis." He widened his eyes. "I have to deal with Yagura. Round 2. And senpai."
"…oh." I sighed, shaking my head.
"But, I agree, so let's do one selfish thing in this war." Without a word, he took my injured hand in his and healed it. "Thanks. Dai, let's free our teammate." He gulped and nodded.
I teleported to Itachi's marker, which was in his kunai holder on his thigh and thrust my nodachi between his arms, straight into Mangetsu's jugular. He couldn't turn to water as the temperature was still too low, but he turned his fingers at me, shooting me while he raised his leg to stop my sword.
Itachi used his Susanoo on us both and put some distance between Mangetsu and us.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, you reacted just in time," I replied, standing up.
"Didn't you tell me you put a marker in his chakra system years ago?" I raised a brow at him and widened my eyes. "Their chakra, if sensors can tell you who they are feeling among the reincarnated shinobi, then it means their chakra signatures are the same, so…"
"Their chakra systems as well, so there is a chance my marker might still be on him."
"Just tell me what to do." I pursed my lips.
"I can't feel any marker in him, so I need time to focus. Can you do that?" He nodded, his sharingan stuck on Mangetsu. I was back next to Dai the second after.
"What can I do?" I pursed my lips, my hands in the tiger sign.
"Sorry, stay back as the medic, I don't think you'll be useful otherwise." He clenched his fists by his side.
However, now was not the time to worry about his feelings. I focused, and focused but couldn't find anything. I looked at my left arm. If I couldn't feel anything right now then maybe…
I went into Sage Mode. The markers Itachi and Dai immediately pulsed more, but I found Mangetsu's. It was no wonder I couldn't feel him without Sage Mode, it kept moving in his chakra flow and was faint. I could only think of it like a pen on a white board you'd erase but you could still read what was written.
I grabbed my nodachi and dug it in the ground. The ground became frosty, there no longer was grass due to their fight. The temperature reached Mangetsu, as well as the marker and brought it back to life.
Once I could, I waited for Itachi to finish his move. Then, I teleported between him and Mangetsu, making sure he would remain solid. I caught his fist and quickly put my seal on his forehead, activating it instantly. He widened his eyes and jumped back.
There wasn't a sound for a few seconds. In the blink of an eye, he pounced on me, tackled me to the ground and put his two fingers on my forehead.
"Don't!" I yelled at the guys, Itachi having started to make a step.
Mangetsu blinked at me, slowly recognizing me as I stopped Sage Mode.
"Uzu?" he mumbled, completely confused and shocked.
"Hey, remove your water gun from my head please," I retorted quietly. He shot his fingers a glance and did, standing up. He pulled me back on my feet without a word, staring at me in shock. "So, how's the Pure Land?"
"The wh…I thought I died at night and now it's daytime and we're not in Kiri anymore and…you're different." I pursed my lips. "I did die, I know, I felt it."
"You did. We won." His shoulders fell in relief.
"How long have I been dead for?"
"Four years," Dai pipped in, now next to us. Itachi decided to turn around to give us some privacy. "You've been dead for four years and a half Mangetsu."
"…you can grow a beard?" Dai rolled his eyes, and I couldn't keep myself from snickering. "Guys, why am I here? I remember seeing you before, and fighting you Uzu but…"
"It was during the war." Mangetsu raised his brows. "Iwa and Ame waged war on us, Konoha and Suna last year, the guy who summoned you and used you like his puppet did the same before."
"…I almost killed you both," he whispered, his eyes wide in horror. "And…Suigetsu saved you."
"Yep. Your brother's still kicking, as annoying as ever." He smiled softly at that. "And now it's the Fourth Shinobi War."
"The fuck?" Dai and I both nodded at him. "Seriously? And I'm dead for that!?"
"Hey, why do you think we broke Kabuto's control on your mind? Contribute instead of trying to kill us." He deadpanned at Dai. "Aneki became the Mizukage by the way!"
"I missed that?"
"And we're so respected now too."
"Really?"
"And Uzu's the Sixth." Mangetsu glanced at me with curiosity, but no shock. "You're not even surprised?"
"Why would I be? I always thought something like this would happen one day." He grinned at me. "Didn't I tell you that night that you couldn't be the one dying there, that you would do big things one day and the whole team knew it? I was right." Itachi chose this moment to come over. Mangetsu furrowed his brows. "Uchiha Itachi, right?" Itachi nodded.
"He's Uzu's boyfriend, you've lost the bet," Dai informed him. I facepalmed as Mangetsu just gauged Itachi up and down.
"Really? You're bringing that up now!?" Dai shrugged with a grin.
"You're dating Akane?" Itachi nodded, returning Mangetsu's gaze. "Why?" I deadpanned at my dead best friend.
"Even I don't really know." I glared weakly at Itachi. "Anyway, I am aware this is a weird moment for you three, but Akane, weren't you going somewhere?" My focus returned.
"Right. You guys should be done around here soon, I'll go to Naruto now."
"Is your cousin in troubles?" I looked at Mangetsu.
"He should run into the guy who manipulated Yagura shortly, and the guy who decided to start this war. I need to go." Mangetsu caught my arm when I walked past him. "What?"
"I'm coming with you." I opened my mouth to retort something, but he beat me to it. "I don't care, Mizukage or not I'm coming with you. I can't die when dead, right?" I shot Dai a quick look, who was staring at us.
"…yeah, sure, come." He looked at our teammate.
"Hey, quit it with the medic guilt Dai, my death isn't on you." The medic widened his eyes in shock, and I was at a loss for words.
Did I miss something in my own teammate?
"Come on Uzu!"
"Hey wait up!" I yelled at Mangetsu, jumping after him. "You don't even know where we're going!"
"Do you?"
"I have my ways."
"Are you talking about me?" oji-chan asked in my mind.
"Yes, don't pretend you're not feeling where Naru is right now." I took the lead when he told me in which direction to go.
"So, what was it?"
"What?"
"The look in your eyes, it changed, and not just because of the poor prestation I gave last time we were with each other." I bit the inside of my cheek.
"It took you just a few minutes to see that huh…"
"Of course," he replied naturally. "I'd be a poor best friend if I didn't." I looked down in thoughts.
"The biggest thing, I guess, that happened since you died isn't…sensei or me as Mizukage, or Sasuke coming to Kiri for eighteen months then on a trip with me as an apprentice because he didn't see himself in Konoha at the time…"
"Ha, he convinced you then?" I looked at him and his toothy grin. "Back then, after a session, he asked me if there was any way for him to stay, so I told him to look into Uzushio and Konoha history because they were strong allies." I…wasn't aware of that.
"Well, he did. Then I went to Konoha and served there, which led me to a huge mental breakdown followed by dealing with my father." Mangetsu shot me a stunned glance. "Yeah, I know. I died for a few minutes but survived and then I…talked to him. He's helping the Shinobi Allied Forces right now. After that, the war, Taki no longer exist, I'm now called the Frozen Flash of the Mist because I had a breakthrough with my Ice Release with my nodachi and Obito abducted me by gouging my eye out. Konoha found me though. I almost married Sasuke too."
"That is the shortest and most fucked-up summary of the past four years you could give me," he stated after a few seconds.
"It's not as if we could sit around a cup of tea to chat."
"Sure but…marriage?" I shivered, remembering this incredibly annoying few weeks.
"I don't want to think about it."
"I see, so in the first life the Yuurei experienced, we escaped too," Killer B told him.
"Don't call her 'the Yuurei' Octopops, her name's Akane." B shot Naruto a quick look.
"Sorry, sorry, Hachibi calls her that."
It was not as if he wasn't told about the war. He was there when Akane left for Kiri after all, so he knew. It was hard not to think about it when he was training to control Kurama's power because he wanted to go there and fight too. It was hard not to go when he felt something tugging at Kurama's chakra that was not his.
It was hard to see his mother vanish when he finally, finally was in her embrace. It was hard, once he was outside of this special building in which he was training, to feel everyone's emotions at once because he was in Bijuu Mode.
At least…Kisame was dead now, even if he sent a message. They had been so careless, who knew what information he gave Obito?
He had spread his clones on the different battlefields to find the impostors, meeting Haku in the process who told him Akane had been doing that before he got here. It was the last time his sister was stealing his spotlight.
He was going to put an end to all of this, now.
"Hum? That's…" Naruto raised his head too and stopped dead in his tracks. He blinked several times and rubbed his eyes to make sure what he was seeing was real.
"You're different from last time, Naruto."
"You know them?" B asked him. He nodded.
"That's Nagato, and the one helping him walk…it's…" He let go of Nagato and cleared his throat.
"I am the hermit of Mount Myouboku! The wise and immortal spirit! Th…"
"Are you seriously doing that speech right now Pervy Sage!?" Naruto yelled at him, the initial shock and buried feelings passed. Jiraya stopped and deadpanned at his student.
"Huh, you get a funky orange chakra coat, and the respect is gone…" He pulled Nagato up by the hand.
"It's not the biggest change though," Nagato commented. "There's something in your eyes Naruto." The blond jinchuriki nodded.
"Yeah. I've learned what pain was in the past few months, how the world was between the lines…I owe it partially to you, my senpai, for making me open my eyes to it."
"I see."
"Naruto," Jiraya called him. "Have you mastered Kyuubi's chakra?"
"Yeah, some of it with Mom's help. Dad sealed a little of her chakra back then so that she could help me when the time came." The Sannin smiled.
"Only Minato would pull something like this in such a terrible moment…is the war not over yet?"
"It was, this is the Fourth Shinobi War," B informed them. "That Tobi Madara guy declared it during the last Kage Summit."
"Of course, Madara would," Nagato sighed. "I never should have…"
"Now now Nagato, there's no point in playing the 'who's-to-blame-for-this' game right now," his sensei interrupted him with a grin. "What's important here is that we are both dead and brought back by the Edo Tensei to fight them, which makes me wonder how Orochimaru came back from the dead this time."
"It's Kabuto, not Orochimaru," Naruto corrected him. Jiraya raised a brow.
"Oh right, I forgot about four-eyes." Something went through their heads.
"Pervy Sage, wh…" Naruto started to ask when his master sent a fire jutsu at them. B used Samehada to cut through it. The sword was not a fan of the idea and punched B on the head.
"Sorry! I'm acting against my will!" Jiraya stated. Nagato stretched out both his arms, pulling Naruto toward a boulder.
"Shit, Shinra Tensei!" Naruto dodged used Kurama's chakra to destroy the boulder, landing on the lake close to them. "Well dodged Naru…" Hundreds of needles came at the young shinobi.
B went at Jiraya to engage him in a close-range battle, only for the Sannin to push him back. As Naruto was done using Kurama's chakra to protect himself from the needles his master sent him, he saw Nagato summoning two creatures, B receiving a Rasengan in the stomach.
"Octopops!"
"Aouch, that stings, fool, ya fool!" B said, a hand on his abdomen.
Naruto joined him and was caught in his hair, barely able to breathe.
"Naruto, you've got to fight us back better than that!" Jiraya barked at him.
"I know that! It's…it's just…"
"I'm dead already Naruto, it's unnatural for me to even be here so you've got to send me back where I belong now," the Sannin said more softly. "I don't know how long I'll be myself for until he decides to suppress my mind completely. You must deal with us, and quick." B tried to slash him in half at the waist, but Jiraya used his hair to protect himself, trapping B as well.
One of Nagato's summon, the many-headed dog, launched itself at them. Naruto was ready to do something when he felt someone rushing at them.
In the blink of an eye, someone grabbed him, and he was back on the lake. The humongous dog was on its side and smoke was coming from Jiraya.
"Are you okay?" Naruto's eyes found Akane's.
"Nee-chan? Wh…"
"I was sent to help you."
"The Sannin is perfectly fine Uzu." Naruto widened his eyes when Mangetsu, who was very dead, reformed himself above the lake.
"I'm not surprised, he was quite tough when he was alive."
"You're not controlled?" B asked Mangetsu.
"Uzu broke the mind control." Akane looked at Nagato.
"Naru, is that Nagato?"
"Yeah."
"Huh, the original Pain and Jiraya-san, that's great." I glanced at Mangetsu. "You were right to tag along." Almost as if it was agreeing with me, Samehada made some noise. "And if B-san agrees, you can finally have a sword too. Naruto, can you deal with Jiraya-san accordingly?" He opened his mouth but gritted his teeth. "I see. Mangetsu and I will take care of him as much as possible, stick to Nagato. Naru, don't forget he's the original Pain, he can use all of their techniques!" On this note I followed Mangetsu.
"Hey!" We looked back and Mangetsu barely caught Samehada, B-san having his eight swords with him now.
"Thanks!" He looked at me. "Heh, it does bring you back in time." I smirked at that. "We never faced a Sannin though."
"First time for everything man." Jiraya-san retreated in the forest. "I'm not sure if he'll fight at his full potential though."
"How so?"
"One of his many feats are his toad summons, that Kabuto will not be able to control. The same goes for Sage Mode. From what I was told on Mount Myouboku, he could do it with two sage toads from there, who I doubt will nicely do it if he were to summon them."
"If he can't use senjutsu, it's good for us. He's still troublesome though."
"Extremely. Let's try Silent Killing first."
"Got it." I raised two fingers in front of me.
"Hiding in the Mist Technique," I said, mist surrounding us. It would be good for Mangetsu and I.
We slipped in the mist, but Jiraya-san stopped all of our attacks as if he could see them coming. Obviously, there was something, but I was not an expert regarding all of his fighting skills. I teleported to Mangetsu and stopped the fire jutsu with an ice shield.
"Samehada noticed a barrier," he informed me curtly.
"Huh, makes sense why he sees us coming then."
"I'm the diversion while you disappear off his radar?"
"Yup." I moved aside to let Mangetsu work.
They exchanged blows and quickly, water and fire jutsus started to be thrown around. I found myself dodging some of them. Mangetsu didn't seem to be enough to occupy a Sannin though as I quickly had oil, flaming oil even, going my way. I quickly used the moisture in the mist to make ice around me and the moment the oil touched it, I hiraishined away, leaving my ice to te burned. I quickly sunk in the ground though.
"Doton: Swamp of the Underworld!" I shot Mangetsu a quick look. It seemed like he received a rasengan because his body was recomposing.
I struggled to get my left hand out of the swamp. Seeing that, Jiraya rushed at me, another rasengan in his hand. I finally saw that his eyes were now white, showing he no longer was in control.
While Mangetsu was not able to move right now, he threw Samehada toward Jiraya-san. I managed to get my hand out of the swamp as the sword bit Jiraya-san at his waist. I quickly went through hand signs.
"Hyouton: Ice Mirror Technique!" I said, using the Hyouton version of my Water Mirror Technique. I took a deep breath and went into Sage Mode to go in Negative Mode more easily.
I teleported to Samehada, grabbed her, and teleported again before the ice version of Jiraya-san and his rasengan with the original collided.
What I thought was a good thing ended up in Jiraya-san sealing my jutsu in a scroll.
"You stole that from me old man," I muttered as he turned to us. I handed Samehada to Mangetsu, who surprisingly was docile while I was holding her. I stopped Sage Mode.
In the blink of an eye, there were three Jiraya-san in front of us, oil, fire, and wind mixing together. We had a tsunami of oil and fire coming our way basically, cancelling any mist and moisture in the air. Heat caressed my skin, the latter even starting to dry.
"Samehada!" Samehada made a noise and started to melt in Mangetsu almost, who was done already with his mudras. "Suiton: Tate Eboshi!" He went into his humongous water form.
Without being in water, it was a stupid move. With Samehada though? It was a good move.
Mangetsu dealt with the fire, in spite of the oil, as B-san landed next to me.
"This one is a tough one, fool, ya fool!" He looked up at me. "Wanna switch?"
"Alright." I ran to where Naru was. He was trapped in one of Nagato's arm. I ran to them, but Nagato grew another arm and trapped me too. "The hell!?"
"I know! I don't know that one!"
"When did he get red hair!?"
"Focus nee-chan! I'm getting my soul sucked out me right now!" Naru yelled at me.
"Right."
"Ningendo!" He put his other regular arm on my stomach.
The Claw appeared immediately and gripped at his arm, ripping my sleeve, leaving only my glove on my arm to hide my mark.
"Yeah sorry, my soul already has a buyer." The Claw went through his arm, and I was back on my feet. I didn't waste time to release Naru as well. He grabbed me the second he touched the ground and put some distance between Nagato and us, the third Uzumaki's arms regenerating.
It was a real family reunion this war I swear.
"Their eyes are all connected," Naru told me, looking at the cameleon-like creature with Nagato.
"Then we disconnect them. I get Nagato's head, I seal his Rinnegan if I can't seal him immediately."
"How is it going with Pervy Sage?"
"Heh…it is going?" I frowned at Nagato. "Now, Rinnegan, he can absorb chakra. If you're still in Bijuu Mode and not Sage Mode, I'm guessing it's because you can't do both at the same time?" He shook his head. "Okay, I'll do it. You said he could repulse anything coming toward him?"
"Yeah, he can pull you in or repulse you. Your kunais won't work." I rolled my eyes.
"I figured already."
I took a deep breath and went into Sage Mode. I wanted to preserve it as much as possible, but facing Nagato and Jiraya-san was not really in my plans.
"You're ready nee-chan?"
"No, but when am I ever?" I replied sarcastically. He snickered.
Well, I never faced him before, so that was new.
Hey! Thanks for reading and leave a review to tell me what you thought of this chapter!
