I looked all around us as they were talking. The Kages brought back from the Pure Land looked exactly like how Hashirama was the first time he came out of the Claw. Once the summoning lines on the ground gone, I went to Yagura, who stood up when he saw me approaching.
"You have been busy," he told me. I nodded weakly.
"We've had two wars, it's a lot." He looked at Oji-chan and I did as well. He smiled at us, nodded at Yagura, and looked away.
"Your parents made the good choice by choosing him as your godfather."
"Yet both choices were Yondaimes, weird coincidences, isn't it?" He smirked. "You are a grandfather by the way." He widened his eyes and then smiled fondly, looking at the ground. "He looks a lot like you, it might be hard at times, but I am his godmother, I'll take care of it."
"Did the godfather godmother theme become a generational thing?" I chuckled.
"I don't know. Oh, that reminds me…Dad helped, with the war and all of it." He raised a brow. "He…explained his whole…I think the man you knew was still there in the end."
"…I see."
"Hey you!" I blinked and turned around. The First, Second and Third Mizukages were there. The Second was pointing his finger at me. "Are you the Rokudaime!?"
"How did you know?" Yagura raised both his brows at me.
"The Kazekage implied the Sixth Mizukage was stupidly strong and gave away all my secrets!" I scratched my cheek.
"Sorry Nidaime-sama, but I had to. I was on a team with one of your descendants, I know how to deal with the Liquification Technique." He took his chin between two fingers.
"Yuki Clan?" I nodded. "And Uzumaki?" I nodded and he grinned. "I knew I was right to accept Mamiko in the village!" He pointed at my hand. "Eito's precious weapon is destroyed though." I blinked and looked down at my nodachi. I gaped and raised it in front of my eyes.
I did infuse the blade with the Shinigami's power…it was half melted! The beautiful blade…it was melted down to the middle and then the sharp side of the blade melted a few centimeters lower.
How could I possibly get it fixed!?
"Go to the Furou Springs," the First told me. "Ask your clan leader, he'll know."
"Huh…there are only two Yuki clan members in the village, me included." The Shodai and Nidaime were stunned. "We've had very bloody civil wars for decades, kekkai genkais users were exterminated and hunted down. Clans with them were slaughtered and the district is now like a ghost town. My grandparents…they were executed on the public place for speaking up against…"
"Me." I looked at the Sandaime. In the few pictures I had seen of him, his eyes were closed. Right now, they were opened, and I almost thought they were Utakata-senpai's eyes. They were probably the same color.
Right, he knew me, I was born during his rule.
"Sandaime, your actions were the doing of a man controlled by a deity planning her return for a millenium." I shot Madara and Hashirama a quick look. "Now, the village is stronger than before, and it will keep on getting stronger, you have my word." The Shodai shut his eyes.
"We can do nothing but believe you, young one." I grinned and looked down at Yagura.
"I already know, Akane." I nodded.
"The last mission you gave us is a success." He pursed his lips and averted his eyes.
"Go back to the others now!" I chuckled at his behavior and waved at them.
"Bye!"
Hashirama looked at me when I knelt next to him. Madara weakly looked at me.
"You…"
"The event I prevented was the death of an Uchiha, which would have led to Konoha ordering another one to kill the whole clan to prevent a coup," I told him flatly. "Earlier, Black Zetsu kept me from saying he was the mastermind. The stone tablet…the Uzumakis had one as well. However,…you still lost from where I'm from."
"So…I always lose…"
"Not exactly. You fought both your great-grandsons and almost killed them today, but they're still hope for the future." He didn't seem to understand immediately.
"These two?" I nodded and went back to the group.
Obito's chakra was wavering, decreasing lower and lower. I shot him a quick look. Just standing seemed to take a lot of him.
Rikudo released the Kages and sent them back to the Pure Land. The sun rose in the sky and Obito shot me a quick look.
Black Zetsu kept him alive, and he had Hashirama's cells but…he was done the moment he brought Madara back to life. I looked down. I saved him from what killed him before, and he did so many despicable things yet…why were my insides twisting painfully?
"I think it's time for us to leave too," the Nidaime stated. I looked at him and nodded. A few words were exchanged, and they all went back to my seal.
"Akane." I looked at Sasuke. I widened my eyes when I saw the Sharingan.
"Wh…" I started, my eyes closing. I heard Naruto yelling my name, but I was a goner.
He was dreaming. It had to be. It was war, then there was a bright light, and his body couldn't move. Then he was there, in the middle of a meeting.
"Itachi, are you okay?" Itachi looked at the person who put his hand on his shoulder.
"Father?" His father cocked a brow.
"We came here together, don't sound so surprised to see me." They were the last ones to leave the Naka Shrine. "Now, let's go or we are going to be late."
"Go where?" Fugaku frowned.
"Naruto's birthday party. He is turning eighteen today." At least it was one thing he knew was true.
Naruto turned eighteen on the battlefield…a year later than originally, but still. His parents' death anniversary was already on his birthday too, now…
They were going to Akiko-san's. They quickly were inside the house. Everything was the same, the people as well…his father was there though, when he died in his arms earlier.
"Come on, come on!" he heard Naruto say from the study.
"Shut it dobe, you're going to lose." That was his brother. He went to it and froze in his steps.
Naruto and Sasuke were as usual. However, two babies were crawling in front of them toward a brush on the other side of the room. It was a finish line.
"Come on Shi-kun, come on!" Naruto kept encourage him.
"Aki's going to win," Sasuke stated firmly. However, Aki turned her head to Itachi and crawled toward him instead. "Nii-san, leave the room!" She went by him and grabbed the bottom of his father's pants.
His father smiled, a smile he wasn't sure he remembered ever seeing, as he picked up the baby, who giggled in his arms.
"Never mind, she went for the grandfather instead of the father," Sasuke said.
"When Fugaku-san is around, nobody else exists." Itachi widened his eyes and turned around. "You were almost late."
"Akane?" he whispered, uncertain of what he was seeing. She tiptoed and kissed him on the cheek.
"Who else?" She went to the other baby. "My baby!" She picked him up and kissed his cheek loudly before looking at their siblings. "I told you already to not make races if I'm not there to bet!" They left the room, heads down.
How…the twins were there but…Akane would have been pregnant on their first time, and he knew it did not happen, she could not at the time and…
"Are you okay 'tachi?" she asked him in a quiet tone, worried brown eyes staring in his. He gulped and nodded.
It was a dream. His dream world. Did it mean he wished to have the twins with Akane already?
"Akane, can you help me with something upstairs please?" Akiko, the adult one, asked her.
"Coming Mom!" She gave Shi-kun to Itachi. "Come on, you haven't seen your son all day." She left swiftly.
Shi-kun started babbling to him with energy and Itachi just stared at him. Softly, he poked his cheek. It was chubby, soft and most of all warm. It was…so real…
"Dada!" Itachi felt his heart warming up at the name.
It was a dream. It was just a dream. Yet, as he hugged the dream-version of his baby boy, the child hugging him back, he couldn't help but want this to be real. He was so warm, so small, so fragile in his arms…He needed him.
The party went on, Sakura and Hinata marveling at the twins, much like their grandmothers. As they went back home, him pushing the stroller with the twins in it, Akane glanced at him several times. They didn't go home though, not at their apartment. They went to a house.
"Okay, you've been weird since you got to my Mom's place, but don't tell me you forgot where you lived," she told him as she unlocked the door. Once they were inside, he locked the door behind him and watched her take Shi-kun in her arms. "Sorry, I know something must have happened, but bath time and putting them to bed is a two-person job." He nodded quietly and picked up Aki. His daughter smiled at him and hugged him around his neck.
There was no way he could meet the twins or raise them, but he wanted this so, so much. He was yearning for this and his children hugging him…
But it was a dream, wasn't it? All of it was a dream.
"Come on, we said you'd sleep separately now kids," Akane scolded them lightly.
"Mama, mama!" The scolding face didn't stay for long as she picked up Shisui and put him in his sister's crib. They hugged each other.
"Look how cute they are! We made them!" she told him with a grin, pointing at them.
"Yes, we did." Her grin fell and she took him by the hand.
"Come on, you're telling me what's wrong." He was quickly sitting on a bed, in what had to be their room. "I'm just going to get ready for bed, just…take a deep breath, whatever is going on I'm sure there's something you or we can do about it." She kissed him on the cheek. "I'll be right back." She disappeared in the bathroom, and he went to the dresser.
There were pictures on them. Some childhood pictures, with their parents and then one with a very pregnant Akane, dark bags under her eyes but grinning happily at the camera. There was one of him asleep with the babies in his arms, probably shortly after their birth. There was one of the twins with their two uncles. Then, there was one with the four of them on it. He had his daughter in one arm, the other around Akane's waist. She was holding Shisui tightly, both babies looking at the camera. Him and Akane were smiling softly at the camera. Right next to it, there was the same one, except that they were kissing.
But it was a dream. This life, it was nothing but a dream.
He looked up when a hand ran up and down his spine, lips kissing his neck gently.
"So, what is it my love?" He put the picture down and turned around.
"The twins, how old are they?"
"Ten-month-old, you know that."
"But…you weren't pregnant Akane…it had not even been a ye…" She frowned.
"What are you talking about? We've been together for four years Itachi." He blinked. "Don't you remember? I had to come to Konoha for a mission just before your surgery and you were stressing over it and said you loved me out of the blue?"
"It's not what happened." She took a step back, confused and a little hurt. "There's no way you'd tell me everything around my surgery."
"I told you everything before I left Konoha with Sasuke," she said, completely confused. "Itachi, I'm not lying."
"But the war!"
"The Fourth Shinobi War?" He nodded. "It never happened Itachi. When Obito attacked the Kage Summit, we stopped him and got Black Zetsu as well, Hoshigaki-san sold them out. You talked him out of the Akatsuki, somehow."
"But you…the Mizukage job…"
"The Elders kicked me out before they made the announcement. My pregnancy denial was useful in a way."
"Denial?"
"Well yeah, there was no way you were knocking me up twice the same way and still…" She sighed. "Come on Itachi, I'm your wife, you're supposed to trust me!"
"Wife? You turned me down."
"Yeah, twice but then I said yes." She showed him her ring finger as well as his. She had two rings on it, he had one. "What else did you get twisted? You're the Sixth Hokage, you gave Shisui a genin team and they're on a mission right now, but he is way happier than before. Sasuke is too much of a coward to make a move on Sakura. Naruto is crushing hard on Hinata now but none of them notices the other's feelings. I live here permanently. What else…"
"The Hokage?" he mumbled quietly. She sighed and went to the closet.
She showed him a black flak jacket with the word "Rokudaime" on the back of it. He shook his head.
"No, I don't want to be the Hokage and have children at the same time, I want to be there for them." Her gaze softened.
"I know, but you know, it happened that way. You're still an amazing dad and husband Itachi." She kissed his knuckles. "I love you."
"I love you too," he whispered without thinking. She smiled happily and gave him an Eskimo kiss. "I just…this is too good to be true."
"Well, isn't that nice for once in your life? To have a peaceful, happy life with your loved ones?"
"Of course, but…it was war earlier, and the Infinite Tsukuyomi…"
"Maybe you saw too much of my memories Itachi." She kissed his jaw. "You're not at war, you're here, with me, with the twins, safe and sound and loved, and wanted." He pursed his lips as she kissed his Adam's Apple.
"I saw my father die Akane…"
"He is fine," she retorted firmly. "He is fine and will watch his grandchildren grow up, and spoil them, I'm sure." She cupped his face to make him look at her. "I know it's hard to just let go and enjoy what we have without worrying about something, but it is our life now. I broke my seal, and we can grow old together, so don't start thinking horrible things." He hugged her and put his forehead against his.
"But it…"
"Whatever it was, it was not real. This," she put two fingers of his on her pulse point, "this is real." He could feel her pulse beating. She put his hand on her heart. "See, my heart's beating, I'm alive, there is no way a dream would feel like this Itachi. Stay with us my love." She tried to kiss him, but he moved his head back. "Itachi?" He went to the bathroom and locked himself in it. Akane banged on the door. "Itachi, open this door!" He slid against the door.
It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream. Reality was hard, and ugly, and painful but it was reality. This…this was a dream. A wonderful, peaceful, dream. It was a life he wanted from the bottom of his heart, but he knew he would never have it exactly like this. Akane was going to be the Mizukage. He didn't want her to go, if he could, he would keep her all to himself, but she was the Mizukage, it was reality.
Whatever was happening outside, they better come up with a solution and quick.
He stayed in this bathroom, Akane begging him to unlock the door for hours. It broke his heart to hear her going from upset to begging, to sobbing telling him they could work through this together. It sounded, and looked, and smelled, felt just like her but…
It was not.
After hours, there was a blinding light outside, then absolute darkness.
Instead of a house, he was on the ground, his body and leg especially aching.
"Nii-san?" The wood broke around him and he sat, blinking rapidly. He rubbed his eyes and looked up.
"Sasuke?" Sasuke sighed and crouched.
"It's over, we won."
"Your eye." Sasuke put his eye over the Rinnegan. "It's permanent?"
"So far. I'll explain later." He helped him up. "Come on, the others should be together."
"You're awake." I blinked and sat, looking at Obito. He was sitting on the ground.
"Wha…" I widened my eyes at the rocks in the sky. "What!?"
"Sasuke used the Sharingan on you to keep you from interfering. He left with Naruto to fight." So…they still had that fight in the Valley of the End?
Shit.
"Kakashi and Sakura left after them." I hit my fist against the ground, gritting my teeth.
"Fuck! This little…"
"You just would have been in the way." I glared at Obito, who returned it with a blank gaze. He averted his eyes quickly.
"What, you can't even look at me now?" He looked down and I sighed. "How long do you have left?"
"I'm not sure," he admitted. "I thought I'd die earlier, but you intervened. It was not as if I could properly fight after that anyway."
"Do you really think sacrificing yourself to save Kakashi's life would make Rin-nee less mad at you?" He winced at that. "Kushina and Onii-chan were brought back during the war you know." I sighed. "Seriously though, what a waste."
"…I'm sorry Akane, for what I put you through all these years." I pursed my lips. "I was using you as a way to confirm I was on the right path and…"
"Kakashi was right then," I interrupted him.
"What?"
"He said that, because of the way I used to see you as a child, you were looking for some kind of blessing from me to justify your actions and that me refusing just…"
"Kakashi figured that out?" I shrugged.
"Why did you even wage war after seeing my memories Obito?" I looked at him. "Really, was it necessary?"
"I couldn't deal with Black Zetsu alone and Juubi needed to be dealt with permanently. It couldn't be done in the Gado Mazo form so…" He gulped. "I'm aware of the death count, but even if I saw what would happen in your memories, a part of me kept wanting this and Naruto pushed me over the edge for good." He looked at me. "And I had to deal with the Uchihas." I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The Uchihas kicked out of the village, they came to me, said they wanted to join my side."
"I don't remember seeing them on the battlefield."
"They were used as sacrifices for the Edo Tensei." I widened my eyes in shock. "They wanted revenge Akane."
"Yeah but…still…" I sighed. "It's not as if you could reverse it now anyway."
Half an hour later, Obito was laying on the ground, no one in sight. Fifteen minutes later, as Obito was starting to struggle to stay awake, Kakashi, Naruto and Sakura appeared. By now, I had Obito's head on my lap.
I looked at Naruto up and down. He still had both his arms.
"Sasuke left to get Itachi," Naru told me. He started to approach Obito. "I'll…"
"No." He frowned. "Let him be."
"But nee-chan, he's going to di…"
"What do you think will happen to him if he lives Naruto?" I cut him off harshly. "It doesn't mean shit that he changed side and helped. It doesn't erase decades of crimes. Now go to the Kages with Sakura, they'll need an explanation." He opened his mouth, but Sakura took his ripped sleeve, shaking her head.
They left as Kakashi joined us. He knelt next to his friend.
"Obito, you…"
"I'm…over my death date…Kakashi…it's fine…"
"Thank you…for helping us Obito. Say 'hi' to Rin for me." Obito smile painfully.
"Will do."
"Fubuki is going to punch you though, he told me so." It made the Uchiha chuckle.
"I…deserve that…" I put my hand on his forehead, checking his temperature. It was…getting lower. His chakra decreasing meant his body was trying to compensate but everything was slowly stopping working.
Obito took my hand and squeezed it.
"Akane…" A tear rolled down his eye. "I'm sor…"
"I can't forgive you Obito, no matter how much you apologize," I stopped him quietly. "But…I accept your apology." He looked at me, relieved.
"Kamui…I give it to you." I shared a look with Kakashi. "It will help you with…the Hiraishin…"
"Obito, that's…"
"Kakashi has no use…for it anymore…" It was true, and it was eating so much of his chakra everyday anyway. "Just…take them…" I nodded and put stasis seals on them to keep them activated even with his passing.
For the next couple of minutes, his breathing started to slow down until, ultimately, it stopped completely. Kakashi closed his eyes as I looked up.
Obito did so many things, hurt the world, my village, my family…
Yet, I couldn't help the lonely tear that fell from my left eye when he breathed his last breath.
It truly was over now. The Akatsuki, the war, Madara, Kaguya…it was over, and we survived.
Kakashi took care of sealing Obito's body as I kept staring at the sky. When I sensed two chakras coming our way, I stood up and turned to them. Sasuke was there, helping his brother walk. I went straight to them. Sasuke put his brother on the ground when he saw my face and I didn't give Itachi a look as I slapped the younger one on the right cheek. Then I hugged him tightly.
"You're an idiot," I hissed at him quietly. He patted my back.
"You said you'd try to stop me even if it killed you," he replied awkwardly. I sniffed and moved back.
I slapped him hard on the left cheek.
"Why two?"
"One for knocking me out with the Sharingan, the other for fighting Naruto." I took a deep breath and looked down. Itachi weakly shook his head. "I'm not going to slap you too."
"You're too kind." I straddled his uninjured leg and hugged him tightly around the neck. After a second, he hugged me back, almost hesitantly.
"The dream world?" I figured out quietly. He nodded before burying his face in the crook of my neck. "It's over now." Sasuke left quietly.
"No, it's not." I pulled my head back to look at him. "We have to deal with the aftermath now." I blinked and felt cold out of sudden.
"That's true, I forgot." I stared at him for a few seconds, thinking of something else as his conflicted eyes were not meeting mine. His finger ran on the scar on my left arm. "Alright, enough rest, let's go." I stood up and pulled him on his feet. "You can tell me what you saw later if you want to." He nodded and leaned toward my face.
He hesitated though, starting to pull back with a frown. Ultimately, he kissed me chastely on the lips.
"You're confused as to whether I'm real or not," I figured out with a sad smile.
"…sorry…" I shook my head.
"Don't, the reason I knew this had been a dream before was because I knew you were dead and no longer with me." I slipped his left arm on my shoulders, put my arm around his waist and started walking.
It took us twenty minutes to reach the others, but I headed straight to the Kages. Team Seven was still talking to them. When sensei saw me, Itachi moved away to lean on Kakashi instead. For once, I returned sensei's embrace without protest.
"You did good, I'm so proud of you," she whispered in my ear. I nodded, a lump in my throat. When I broke our embrace, I looked around. "Hokage-dono ordered the Medical Corps to take care of the wounded and make a temporary camp."
"I see." I looked at the Raikage, sensei's hands still on my shoulders. "Raikage-sama." He looked at me. "Are you still the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces?"
"The battle is over Uzumaki, what do you want?" he asked me gruffly.
"I'd like your permission to make a team and go to HQ." They all looked at me. "If there is even just a slim chance there is any survivor, then the longer we stay here the less likely we'll find them alive."
"It is true. Alright, you can." I nodded in thanks and looked at Naruto.
He still didn't know. He frowned when he saw my face and I grabbed his shoulder, taking him aside.
"What's going on nee-chan?" I sighed.
"HQ was blown up earlier."
"Yeah, I know." I bit my bottom lip, took a deep breath, and looked in his eyes.
"Naruto, Mom was posted in HQ." He had no reaction at first, then his eyes got wider and wider in shock and horror as he understood why I wanted to go there. "I'm going to dig her out if there's anything left."
It was blunt, and harsh to say it like this but…from the blast…it was just logical that some of them would no longer be whole.
