This was part of a prompt challenge on tumblr. Most were written very late at night after being at work, so they tend to be short - the challenge for October 14th was Love.
"There is no greater love than this, than to lay down one's life for one's friends."
No Greater Love
The tower started to split and Mirabel barely held on to La Candela as Casita launched her from where she was in an effort to get her away from the falling tower. Mirabel held the candle with both hands as she slid at ridiculous speed down the ramp Casita created landing on hard on her knees. She looked up but knew it was too late. There was no way she was going to be able to escape the tower crushing her. She scrunched herself down waiting for the first stone to hit her. It really was what she deserved. A fitting end to her useless life. She'd brought this destruction on herself. She'd failed to keep La Candela safe from harm. Again, Casita threw itself into action as walls collapsed Casita surrounded her with furniture and broken pieces of itself.
Holding the candle tightly Mirabel prayed above all that the candle would be spared. I'm sorry La Candela, please, please, please stay with us. I promise I won't try to be special anymore. I promise, just please don't leave us…she closed her eyes as the sound of broken stone, glass and wood filled her ears and the dust of fifty years covered her making it hard to breathe. She opened her eyes and saw the candle still had a small flame. It flickered in an unfelt wind and quietly went out.
"No."
La Candela was gone, and it was her fault, but before she had time to process that, she heard Casita say, 'It was wondrous, Mira, thank you' and as a stunned Mirabel watched in horror, Casita, who was born of the Candle, died with it, all while protecting her and her family.
