October 17th's prompt was Miracle...that is all

Everything Dies

Julieta gently picked up and looked at the reassembled vision. She tilted it and saw the cracks fade in and out of existence. Setting it down, she lightly touched Mirabel's face. Julieta had seen that look of unhappiness on Mira's face more times than she could count. But there was a touch of anger there that was unusual for Mira. Was it possible that Mira's happiness or lack thereof was what was causing Casita to crack? Or was it something more… Bruno's visions were often affected by the person who requested them. Her mother's apathy toward Mira was difficult for her to understand. Nothing about Mirabel had changed the day she didn't get a Gift, except her mother's view of her. Oh Bruno, she thought, is this what's kept you from us?

Agustín was with Luisa, Pepa was in her room trying very hard not to cause natural disaster. Isa was sulking, and everyone else had scattered. Except Antonio, he was watching her. She heard a questioning squeak near her and Julieta saw the rats that sometimes came into her kitchen. She often fed them bits of arepas, just not in front of anyone. Julieta knew Bruno had sent them; they were here for this. She took an additional step back and nodded. The rats were very efficient as they each took a piece and scampered off the table except for the last. That one stopped when Antonio asked it a question. Bruno was here of that much she had always been certain, though it pained her greatly that he chose to remain apart from them. Knowing why never made it easier to accept.

Now, whatever was happening, Mirabel was at the core of it. Julieta could only hope it would not destroy her in the process. When Agustín returned they went into the foyer, her mother was there and demanded to know why he'd not shown her the vision right away, as if she hadn't been expecting everyone to act perfectly for Isa's dinner. As if Mirabel was not a part of their family.

Once her mother left to go into town, they went upstairs to check on Luisa, and hopefully, they'd run across Mira in the process. Luisa had finally stopped crying came out to help look for her sister. When she heard her mother shouting at Mirabel, Julieta and her husband came to the plaza and that's when she saw it.

Anger, not her mother's, but Mirabel's.

The image of her daughter in that broken vision was of this moment as her daughter's realization of her Abuela's true feelings were revealed. Though in the past Mira had always responded to her Abuela with love, this time, it was too much for her to bear. Her anger would be righteous and Mira would say what was in her broken heart.

Julieta reached out to Mira as she felt that last bit of hope slip away. The Miracle knew it too and Julieta could see there was no way this was going to end well. Everything dies…even miracles.
