Further Advances

Taking a moment while their armies recovered, Sun Jian and Liu Bei, along with Liu Bei's sworn brothers and Sun Jian's retainers, gathered and talked.

"So, we've been stuck here at Yangren due to unfortunate issues with the supply lines." Sun Jian explained before asking. "So, how have things been going with the rest of the alliance?"

Liu Bei explained quickly. "We broke through Sishui Gate, it wasn't easy, Dong Zhuo's officer Hua Xiong was defending it and was proving too strong for us to overcome.

Zhang Fei laughed boisterously. "Ha, that was until Brother Yu went to fight him, he took him down effortlessly."

Guan Yu shook his head. "It does not do to boast about such things, Zhang Fei, yes I defeated Hua Xiong, so that our allies could advance. We then moved to aid a village Dong Zhuo's officer Niu Fu was attacking."

Han Dang gasped. "What, attacking a village, that's monstrous."

"Truly, luckily we saved the villagers and helped a militia form to defend it." Liu Bei added. "That also enabled us to overhear a message regarding Lord Yuan Tan's progress. He has done well, defeating a detached unit and convincing Lord Lu Zhi to aid us at Luoyang, now he's on his way to the mountain base while the others are attacking Hulao gate."

Sun Jian nodded, taking this all in.

Finally he grinned and pointed to a path through the mountains to the North of Yangren Castle.

"You should take that route, you'll be able to circle around and attack Hulao Gate from the other side, that should give you an advantage for certain."

Liu Bei smiled and bowed. "That sounds like an excellent plan, thank you Lord Sun Jian. What will you be doing?"

"Our army is fully recovered." Sun Jian replied. "We're going to be taken the route we were appointed during our planning, we'll be circling around to attack Luoyang from the west, we'll likely meet up with and join Lord Lu Zhi."

Cheng Pu then added thoughtfully. "It may not be that simple though, I fear we might be attacked, there are more than a few areas that would leave us susceptible to an ambush."

"Ha, if there's an ambush we'll just plough right through it." Huang Gai laughed.

Zhang Fei also laughed. "That's my kinda plan."

All smiling at that, they exchanged their farewells and bowed before going their separate ways. All mounting up and ready to go, Sun Jian and his allies watched as Liu Bei and his men rode off in the direction that Sun Jian had pointed out to them. Once they were out of sight, Sun Jian gave the order and they all readied their weapons and began their march, heading for the nearby gate which would lead to the path they needed to take.

As they rode on everyone kept their eyes open and looked around cautiously.

"This doesn't make sense my Lord." Han Dang said. "I thought the ambush would be at the gate, it'd be the best place for it, have troops on either side and hidden and then catch us in the middle."

Sun Jian nodded. "I agree, but that's not the only way, they probably already knew we'd figure that out."

Huang Gai then spoke up. "Let's keep going, we can't fall behind, the other parts of the coalition are doing well, we need to step things up."

"Not so hasty, Huang Gai." Cheng Pu warned. "Look up ahead, I think we've found our ambush."

They looked to see a contingent of Dong Zhuo's army, stationed off the road by a large hill, weapons at the ready, at the front was a large man in army wielding a club.

"Fools, you're no match for Li Meng, come and face death!" He cried.

Sun Jian smirked. "He's calling us fools? Well, let's see how he likes this, let's go, remember the plan."

They all nodded and word passed along the Sun forces quickly and then, with a war cry they charged. Li Meng fell back in amongst his men, not out of cowardice, despite appearances, but rather to draw them in further. What he didn't realize is they were going to charge in further anyway, they were deliberately springing the ambush. Li Meng laughed as he saw them come right into place.

"Cao Xing, now!"

At once Cao Xing launched the ambushed while Li Meng had his own men attack. But to his shock Sun Jian's forces didn't even flinch, they continued to flight until Sun Jian called out.

"Han Dang!"

With that Han Dang and the men he had been left with charged in, having waited behind while the others charged, launching a counter ambush.

Very soon Sun Jian and his forces controlled the pass and the survivors of the failed ambush were fleeing in shock and panic as Sun Jian regathered his forces and smiled.

"Alright, good job everyone." He said. "This is it, our final push, we'll soon reach Luoyang."

They all cheered and they began to advance but soon stopped as they reached the crest of the hill, to their right was Luoyang, From their current position they could make out something else which caught their attention and confused them, an army fleeing, leaving Luoyang, bearing the banner of Dong Zhuo.
