"Ok Megan, I'm going to need you to stop pushing."
Jamie looked straight over the sheet at Megan Garson and nodded his head. She answered with an unsure question.
"Why? What's wrong?"
Swallowing hard, Jamie did his best to sound confident.
"Your baby is stuck, but I'll have him out in a few minutes, ok? He's going to be just fine. You'll feel some tugging for a few minutes as I get him out. Just try and relax."
Megan nodded and leaned back against the pillows. Biting her lip, she looked up at her husband Matt. He gave her reassuring word and comfort.
"Everything's going to be ok sweetheart. Doctor Reagan's the best. He'll get Toby out. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
Jamie frowned even though Megan couldn't see his face behind his mask. Sweat was beginning to form on his left brow. He felt like he'd been holding his breath as four nurses helped him bring Toby into the world. Megan managed to sit up slightly and tried to get a look at her little boy.
"Is he ok? Why isn't he crying?"
Jamie while keeping his attention on the little boy in his arms began clearing his nose and mouth with a bulb syringe from the tray of to the right of him.
"Just give him a second. He's alright. I'm just clearing his nose and mouth. There we go! That's what we want to hear! Good boy Toby!"
Megan began to cry as Jamie held the crying baby over the sheet.
"He's beautiful Doctor Reagan thank-you!"
Jamie felt himself smiling down at the baby in his arms and watched as Sandy one of the nurses that always accompanied him to each and every delivery hand a pair of scissors to the husband Matt. He gladly took them and separated mother and child. Sandy took Toby from Jamie and placed him on top of his mother's chest. Both parents looked down at him with pure love and admiration.
They were already in love with him. Jamie let out a sigh of relief and finished his task at hand and got up to leave the room. Sandy stayed behind to give Toby a bath. Leaving the room, Jamie let out another sigh of relief and sat down in a chair next to the door. His eyebrows furrowed as he heard Megan scream from inside the room. One of his other nurses scurried out the door and had a panicked look on her face.
"Doctor Reagan! You'd better get in here now!"
Jamie was quick to get to his feet and reenter the room. Professional mask back on, he asked Sandy what was wrong.
"Sandy? What is it?"
Sandy had a haunted look in her eyes. Jamie's heart sank. NO. Not today. Not now.
"He's not breathing doctor."
Jamie all but ran the few steps to the door and opened it, yelling down the hall.
"Hey! We've got a code blue in here!"
A flood of nurses and a few more doctors entered the room and took Toby away. Megan was beside herself.
"Where are you taking my baby?"
Jamie turned back to Megan and did his best to reassure her.
"The other doctors and nurses are going to take care of him. He's going to be just fine."
Matt looked at Jamie and added his two cents.
"The nurse said he wasn't breathing. If my son dies, I'll sue you!"
Jamie knew those words well. He'd never been sued before, but he always knew it would come up at family dinner on Sunday's when Erin brought up a case she was working on.
Jamie's face was drawn and almost haggard looking. He made his way down to the nursery. He found solace in just standing outside watching all those babies sleep. Especially after a hard day. As he rounded the corner, he found Eddie standing at one of the large bay windows looking in. She looked a little sad. Standing next to her, he realized she hadn't even noticed he was there.
"Eddie. What are you doing up here?"
He watched as she smiled back at him.
"Sometimes after a really difficult day, I like to come up here and remind myself of how beautiful life is. You know, take a step back and just savor the moment."
Jamie smiled and stepped a little closer to her.
"Well, I'll let you in on a little secret Eddie. I know for a fact that you've been coming up here every day after tour to visit these babies. For the last month."
Eddie looked at Jamie and gave a small smile.
"There's kind of a reason behind that."
Jamie could take a hint and gave a small smirk.
"I've had kind of a rough day too. Want to go have a couple of beers? I know a great bar a couple of blocks away."
Eddie smiled and nodded.
"I'd like that."
Jamie nodded and led her towards the elevator.
"Great. Let me just go get changed and we'll head out."
As the elevator dinged and they reached the first floor of the hospital, Jamie headed towards the men's locker room to get changed. Twenty minutes later after he'd showered and put on clean clothes, he walked out to see Eddie waiting for him over by the admit desk. Linda was putting a chart away as Jamie approached.
"Headed out?"
Jamie nodded and gestured towards Eddie.
"Yeah. Officer Janko and I are going out for drinks. So, I won't be needing ride home tonight."
Linda smiled and held her hand out.
"Officer Janko. I'm Linda Reagan. Jamie's my brother-in-law. It's nice to meet you."
Jamie watched as Eddie shook hands with Linda.
"It's nice to meet you, Linda. But I'm off duty. You can call me Eddie."
Linda nodded and then looked to Jamie and winked at him.
"It was nice to meet you, Eddie. You kids have fun."
Jamie shot Linda a look. She smiled and went back to work.
When the two reached the bar, Jamie ordered a couple of beers. Eddie got a large order of onion rings and a bacon cheeseburger. Jamie got a cobb salad. She made a face at him.
"I figured you for a bacon burger kinda guy."
Giving a small laugh Jamie looked straight at Eddie.
"I like to eat healthy. I do like bacon though. But more as a breakfast side. I like burgers. I just don't eat them as often."
It was three beers in now and Eddie looked at Jamie and frowned.
"My partner and I responded to an Emotionally Disturbed Person call today. He was a 6 foot 8 man and was 280 pounds holding a woman who was 6 months pregnant at a corner bodega in Queens. We collared the guy, and the pregnant woman went to King's General. But there were a few moments when I thought he was going to hurt her."
Jamie nodded and took a sip of his beer, then responded.
"Those are the tense moments you can't predict. I've got one for you. I delivered a little boy today that went to the emergency room twenty minutes after he came into the world because he wasn't breathing. The ER docs got him breathing again, but the parents blame me because he was deprived of oxygen for a total of six minutes. I didn't cause that."
Eddie placed a light hand on Jamie's.
"It's not your fault Jamie. You didn't cause that. Besides, it could've happened to anyone. Are the parents going to sue?"
Jamie prickled at Eddie's words.
"The father used those words when he thought his son was going to die. We're keeping his son in the hospital for at least a week to run some tests to rule anything abnormal out. He did however get stuck during delivery. That could've been a contributing factor."
Jamie ran a hand over his face and Eddie put a hand on his forearm then quickly took it away.
"Him getting stuck while he was being born is also not your fault Jamie. Those are factors out of your control. You care for these women and help them bring their children into the world."
Taking another sip of his beer Jamie nodded. He hoped her words rang true. If not, he was screwed. He wasn't sure if this counted as being in the company of a friend? Or was this a date? He wasn't sure. But he felt a strange tugging at his heart. Almost like he'd known her forever.
