"Jamie? Jamie are you awake?"
Jamie cracked open his eyes and could only see Eddie's blurry outline at first until his eyes focused. Wiping the sleep from his eyes and ran a hand through her hair.
"I am now. You ok baby?"
Eddie shook her head and tried her best to hold her tears back. She gave a frustrated sigh. Damn hormones.
"No. I'm not ok. Jamie I'm scared. What if I don't know what I'm doing? What if I'm not a good enough mom to this baby? What's if something's wrong? What if I go into labor early?"
Jamie placed a gentle kiss to her forehead and leaned it up against her own.
"Eddie, babe, I need to take a deep breath and relax, ok? Just breathe. I'm right here. You'll worry yourself sick thinking about all the what ifs. I'm right here. Our baby is in good hands."
Eddie nodded and swiped away a few tears.
"It's just, this is unknown territory for us Jamie."
Jamie nodded and kissed her forehead, then placed a kiss to her lower abdomen which was just starting to show.
"I know your nervous and a little scared. That's perfectly normal for first time moms. I wish I had a road map to tell you how the rest of this pregnancy is going to go, but it doesn't work that way. I can only give you the medical facts. You're at the point now, where your appetite will increase."
Eddie sighed and swallowed.
"I wouldn't mind that. Except for the fact that I'm constantly battling morning sickness all the time. I can't live on saltines and ginger ale all the time. Or peppermint tea and ginger. Can't you just write me a prescription for Compazine or something?"
Jamie shook his head and placed another kiss to the slight bump of her lower abdomen.
"That would be a conflict-of-interest babe. I could lose my license. Let's talk to Doctor Carollson. She may have a few other options that might help. I can suggest some myself, but I can't write prescriptions for you."
Eddie nodded.
"I'll ask at my appointment tomorrow. For now, could you make me some peppermint tea please?"
Jamie nodded and placed a kiss to her forehead.
"Ok. I'll be back in a few. Just rest and keep taking deep breaths."
Eddie closed her eyes and pushed herself into a sitting position, leaning up against the headboard of the bed. Unconsciously, she placed her hand on her slight bump and gently rubbed it.
"Hi honey. It's mommy. Daddy says it's too soon for you to hear me yet, but I just know that you are a girl. Don't tell daddy I said that. He's convinced you are. I just want you to be healthy. A happy and healthy baby. I can't wait until you come into the world."
Eddie hadn't noticed Jamie was standing against the door frame with her peppermint tea in his hand.
"So, you do think this baby is a girl. I thought so."
Eddie felt heat come to her face and she kept her hand on her abdomen. She suddenly felt very self-conscious. Opening her eyes, she looked Jamie straight in the eye.
"I didn't say that."
Jamie smirked and pursed his lips.
"I just heard you. You clearly said: I just know that you are a girl. You agree with me babe. You know I can check your pulse to see if your lying…"
Eddie pursed her lips and then frowned.
"I know that babe. It's uncanny the way you do that. But what if its triplets?"
She felt a smirk starting to form on her lips. She watched for his reaction.
"Triplets don't run in my family. What about yours?"
Eddie shook her head and took a sip of her peppermint tea.
"Nope. Sets don't run in my family either."
Jamie climbed back into bed next to Eddie and leaned up against the headboard. Eddie took a few more sips of the peppermint tea and set it on the side table.
"How are you feeling baby?"
Eddie nodded her head and leaned into Jamie.
"Much better. Thank-you. So, what else should I expect throughout my pregnancy?"
Jamie took a breath and looked at her.
"It's a lot of information. I'll lay it all out for you tomorrow. After your appointment. I'm going to sign us up for Lamaze classes. Medically speaking I know all the ins and out of pregnancy and birth, but you are the one giving birth. Not me."
Eddie nodded and gave a nervous smile.
"As long as your there with me."
Jamie nodded and kissed Eddie's forehead one last time.
"It's late babe. Let's go to sleep."
Eddie lie back on the exam table nervously tapping her left leg. Jamie put a hand on her knee to stop her nervous tapping.
"Relax babe. Everything is going to be fine."
Eddie took a breath and nodded.
"Sorry. I'm just really nervous."
Jamie nodded; he was nervous too.
"I am too. But whatever we find out, boy or girl, just as long as their healthy. Ok?"
Eddie nodded as Doctor Carollson came into the room. She smiled at the couple.
"Jamie. Eddie. How are you feeling Eddie?"
Eddie nodded.
"To be honest I'm a little nervous. When is my morning sickness going to go away?"
Doctor Carollson gave her a sympathetic look.
"Well, your right at the 12-week mark so it should be subsiding in another few days to a week. What about your dizzy spells? Are you still having them?"
Eddie furrowed her eyebrows.
"The dizzy spells have gone away."
Doctor Carollson nodded and gave a smile to Eddie.
"Good. Now Eddie, I want you to lift up your shirt a little. There you go. Let's see what the two of you are having shall we?"
The couple nodded their head as the waited with bated breath as Doctor Carollson spread some gel onto Eddie's abdomen. Eddie spoke up.
"That's surprisingly not cold at all."
Doctor Carollson gave her a small smile.
"I took the liberty of warming it up. Now let's see what the two of you are having. Looks like the two of you are having… Come on little one… Looks like you two are having a little girl. Congratulations."
Jamie kissed Eddie's forehead.
"A girl."
Doctor Carollson frowned and kept moving the wand around for a minute longer.
"Hmm… That's strange…"
Jamie felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end.
"What is it, Jenna?"
Doctor Carollson shook her head and zoomed in on what she was seeing. Jamie kept his hand in Eddie's and squeezed it as he looked at the screen.
"I'm not entirely sure. What are your findings, Doctor Reagan?"
Furrowing his eyebrows, he took the wand from Doctor Carollson and moved it slightly.
"A small blood vessel. The shape of it is strange. But there's adequate blood flow through it. I thought it might be a blighted ovum or a small fibroid."
Eddie felt panic rise in her, but she swallowed and tried to keep it at bay. Looking between the two doctors, one being her husband, she became irritated.
"Would the two of you explain to me what's going on?"
Jamie kissed Eddie's forehead and apologized.
"Everything's just fine babe. Doctor Carollson and I were just discussing this small blood vessel here. I thought it might have been a small uterine fibroid or a blighted ovum. That's where an egg attached itself to the uterus but doesn't turn into a fetus."
Eddie nodded but kept look at Jamie.
"I don't have that do I?"
Jamie shook his head and moved the wand back over the spot where the baby was.
"No. You don't. The baby is perfectly healthy. Just listen to that heartbeat. She's just fine."
Eddie swallowed and nodded, blinking back tears, breathing in a sigh of relief.
"Ok. Don't scare me like that Jamie."
Jamie kicked himself internally. Why did I have to tell her that?
To Be Continued…
