Jamie watched as Eddie straightened out her dress blues in the mirror. He fixed his tie and smiled, kissing the back of her neck. He could tell she was nervous. Eddie found herself absently touching the back of her head with her left hand.
"I'm grateful to be alive Jamie."
Jamie nodded and took a quick peek into the bedroom; Cora was fast asleep in the bassinet.
"Do you want to try feeding her one more time before we go?"
Eddie shook her head no and fixed her hair up into a bun. Concealing the ever-present scar under her hair.
"No. She'll be ok for a little while. I topped her off about 20 minutes ago. It's a good thing I pumped last night. There are a few bottles in the fridge we can take with us."
Jamie nodded.
"Ok, I'll put a few bottles in the bag I got you to carry all her stuff in."
Eddie looked at Jamie and twisted the bottom of part of her jacket with her index and middle finger.
"How do I look babe? Do I look ok?"
Jamie gave her an approving smile.
"You look so hot in your dress blues babe."
Eddie laughed and tossed him a side glance.
"Of course, I do."
Jamie gave her a smile and then smirked.
"Well, now who's being arrogant?"
Eddie rolled her eyes.
"Momentary weakness I suppose. I may look hot with this uniform on, but do you love what I look like under all this? My post pregnancy belly, the dark circles under my eyes, let's not forget I give nourishment to that little one in there, getting up every two hours to feed her, dirty diapers, laundry…"
Jamie grabbed for Eddie's hands and held them.
"Hey Eddie. Look at me. I need you to take a breath and relax. Here. Let's sit down."
Eddie closed her eyes when she began to hear Cora begin to cry from the bedroom. Starting to rise from the edge of the tub, she put a smile on her face, but Jamie knew better.
"Stay here babe. I'll get her. She probably just needs a diaper change."
Eddie sunk back down on the edge of the tub and shook her head. She had to keep going. Taking a breath and getting up, she went into the bedroom. She'd get through this. Sinking down on the bed, she watched as Jamie fixed Cora's dress. Scooping her up in his arms, he smiled down at her and gave her words of love, one's a father would give to his child.
"There we go. All better. Daddy loves you. We're going to have to help mommy out. Ok?"
Eddie hated that her emotions were all over the place. She loved Cora with all her being. All her soul. There was just so much going on at once. She needed Jamie's help.
"I thought I could handle all this by myself. But I can't."
Jamie nodded and gave Eddie a sympathetic smile.
"That's why I'm here, and so is the rest of the family. We're all here to help you. Ok? You're not alone in this."
Eddie nodded and placed a kiss to Cora's forehead.
"I love you baby girl. Mommy and daddy will always love you no matter what."
Jamie placed Cora in Eddie's arms and smiled, fishing his phone out of his pocket.
"You look beautiful babe. Let's get a picture for her baby book."
Eddie nodded and then smiled as Jamie snapped a photo with his phone. Smiling down at Cora, she nuzzled her nose against hers and whispered down to her.
"You are my baby girl. Nothing is ever going to change that. But mommy gets really tired sometimes. That's why daddy is here to help mommy out."
Jamie placed a kiss to Eddie's forehead and then one to Cora's.
"Hate to break up this beautiful moment, but we're going to be late."
Eddie nodded and slowly got to her feet.
"I would like to welcome everyone here today in thanking two of our city's bravest residents. One for her act of bravery and heroism and is part of the NYPD. Officer Edit Janko."
Taking a deep breath, she stepped up to Frank on stage and stood at attention. Frank saluted back and placed the medal around her neck.
"Thank you for your service, Officer Janko."
Eddie gave a polite smile.
"Thank-you sir."
Frank smiled and shook hands with Eddie. Camera's flashed everywhere. Eddie took her place next to Jamie who was rocking Cora gently. He was quick to place the pacifier back in her mouth as she spit it out.
"I've got you baby girl. I know this is a lot of excitement for you. All these bright lights."
Jamie became quiet as Frank began to speak again.
"This next brave man is being recognized for his bravery in protecting Officer Janko, my son Doctor Jameson Reagan and my daughter ADA Reagan from a man who brought terror to families all over this great city. He gave them aid while being held hostage himself. Helping Officer Janko under the cover of secrecy devise a plan to subdue Martin 'Marty Hollinson. Mr. Hollinson and Officer Janko are then pulled into a standoff with one another. Hollinson firing his weapon at Officer Janko, who at the time was in active labor. Fearing for her life, she aimed and fired her weapon at the same time. His bullet went past Officer Janko, missing her, only to ricochet off a concrete column behind her, striking her in the back of her head. Hours later she is rushed into surgery to remove the bullet from her skull. She survived with little to no damage. We honor Officer Janko and Carson Stevenson for their acts of bravery."
Eddie clapped as Carson stepped up on stage and shook hands with Frank and received his medal. He was happy that this whole ordeal was past him now.
"Great speech dad."
Frank only nodded and took a bite of lasagna. Eddie was already halfway done with her plate. Jamie gave her a look.
"Slow down sweetheart. There's plenty more where that came from."
Shrugging her shoulders, she looked straight at Jamie.
"I'm looking forward to pop's piecakie. Plus, I'm eating not only for myself but to keep my little ray of sunshine in the car seat nourished and happy."
This solicited a laugh from Jamie.
"Cora has no issues eating. She has her mother's appetite."
This caused everyone in the room to laugh in agreement. Today had turned out well. Jamie felt like things were getting back to normal. Now he'd have to work out a schedule for everyone to pitch in and help Eddie out with Cora. He was going back to work the very next week, and Eddie still have another three before she went back.
