As the weeks passed the world around the Rugrats began changing as the leaves began their process of changing colors for the fall months that were upon them. Unfortunately for Dil Pickles that wasn't the only thing that had changed in the past few weeks. He did remember hearing from his doctor appointment that he was potentially going to have a couple more teeth coming in very soon but he didn't think it was going to be this soon!
Here Dil was, lying on the floor inside his and Tommy's playpen, pacifier in his mouth. At least he was able to chew on his pacifier to soothe his gums a bit from the aching pain of his gums. Sure he didn't use his pacifier as much anymore, but it was still good for when he wasn't feeling too well! Especially in this case! Dil just glanced miserably over to his brother who was playing with his Reptar doll as he knocked down the block tower with him.
"Dilly, do you wants to play too? It might dislact you from your teeths that are growing in." Tommy offered his brother, seeing as he looked upset. He remembered the last time he had his recent few teeth come in and he could relate to how his brother was probably feeling.
"Yeah okay." Dil nodded slightly as he sat up, readjusting the pacifier in his mouth as he continued to chew on it to sooth his gums
After helping rebuild the tower for Reptar to knock down once again as Tommy knocked down the tower with his Reptar down once again. At the same time Didi came into the living room as she picked up Dil from his spot in the playpen.
"Come on sweetums, you are going to see the nice dentist today." Didi said, patting her youngest on the back knowing his gums were bothering him. After the whole incident with Tommy and his bottles the first time around Didi had taken the time to find another dentist that wasn't Dr. Homer along with taking the advice from Betty of just referring to the dentist as well the dentist by the time she took Tommy in again for another appointment. As Betty mentioned, if she were to continue to call the dentist the tooth fairy it would only confuse them down the line when they are old enough to lose their baby teeth.
Allowing Tommy to quickly use the potty beforehand, Didi then took them both out to the car as she strapped them both in the back before climbing in the front herself. The trip was mostly silent as Dil wasn't feeling up for a conversation as he continued to chew on his pacifier. That was until he noticed something off with his pacifier. Removing it from his mouth, Dil stared at it with a visible frown. Of course, Tommy noticed his brother looking even more upset and decided to ask what was up.
"What's wrong Dilly?" Tommy asked
"Something's wrong with my binkie." Dil murmured as he fiddled with it in his hands until he discovered the issue. After squeezing the end of it, Dil discovered a hole in the pacifier, a fairly decent sized one at that
"Oh no, I thinks you bited a hole into it with your one tooth that you has Dilly." Tommy responded with a small frown
"Does that mean it's brokeded?" Dil asked, sounding more upset by the minute.
"I thinks so Dilly, but it's okay once we get to the dentlist mommy can gets you a new one out of the diapey bag." Tommy reassured
"No I don't want my binkie to be brokded! It's the onlyiest thing making my mouth not hurts!" Dil screamed, throwing the pacifier from his hand down next to him in a fit of anger as he began wailing.
"Oh dear...It's okay sweetie we're almost there!" Didi exclaimed as they pulled into the dentistry parking lot outside the building
Quickly exiting the car, Didi then made her way to the back to grab Dil and try to console him while also tending to Tommy and unbuckle him from his seat. Once Dil was calmer, Didi made her way inside the building with the boys as she made her way to the front desk to check in. Upon being checked in Didi of course allowed the two to play in the play area until they were ready for them both.
Tommy, having been there before, made a beeline for the small play area as it had a mini equipment set with a slide! Giggling happily Tommy made his way over to it as he began crawling up the soft rubber covered ramp and into the tunnel towards the slide. Dil however didn't want to play, he just wanted his binkie not to be broken so he could continue to properly use it. Remembering how Tommy did mention there was an extra one of his binkies in the diaper bag Dil smiled as he began making his way over to Didi, who was reading one of the latest Lipschitz books, hoping to get into the diaper bag. However before he could do so, the nurse emerged from the back area as she called out for them.
"Mrs. Pickles, Dr. Smiley will see Dylan now." The nurse said, gesturing from them to come to the back
"Oh yes, we'll be right there." Didi perked up, putting away the book in the side of the diaper bag before getting up, picking the bag up and placing it on her shoulder.
Dil just frowned as the bag was removed from his reach along with his mommy picking him up. He was so close to getting another binkie! Didi ushered Tommy to come with as they all made their way to the back area of the office and into a small cubicle where Dr. Smiley was going through the cabinets, gathering things he needed.
"Well hello there Mrs. P! Hello Tommy and aw this must be Dil I've heard so much about you." Dr. Smiley greeted
Dil not only grumpy but uneasy due to seeing this strange man was enough for him to hide his face in Didi's shoulder.
"Hello Dr. Smiley, glad we could finally get a spot in for Dil. He's teething a bit right now so he may be a little fussy." Didi explained, getting Dil to let go as she sat him down in the chair.
"No worries Mrs. P, I'll take care of it. I know it's probably painful right now huh bud?" Dr. Smiley said moving his rolling chair to the other side of the chair as he put on some latex gloves.
Dil just blinked, this man didn't seem so bad he was just like the doctor at the doctor's office.
"Alright Dil, I'm going to take the binkie for a couple minutes alright. I just need to see inside your mouth and I'll give it right back." Dr. Smiley calmly explained, pointing to the pacifier.
Dil, hesitant, looked over to his mom and brother, as he looked specifically at Tommy. Tommy seeing that his brother was nervous about the whole situation gave a nod that it was okay. Seeing Tommy's approval Dil took a deep breath as he let Dr. Smiley take the pacifier from his mouth to do his checkup.
"Lets see, his one tooth looks great and well taken care of. It also seems he'll have two top teeth and another bottom one coming in from the feeling along his gum line. Once they're in you'll have to start cleaning them as well. We can give you a brush specifically to help clean them." Dr. Smiley explained as Didi nodded in response
"Alright, thank you." Didi replied, "Is there anything else I need to do? He still drinks from bottles and sucks on pacifiers?" Didi decided to ask, concerned she would have to worry about weaning Dil from either of the mentioned items.
"There's no rush for his bottle. You can start within the next few months or you can wait until he's two unless he's showing signs otherwise. As for his pacifiers..." Dr. Smiley explained before turning to grab Dil's binkie from the sterile tray he placed it on and turning back around as he showed Didi the newly developed hole in the pacifier. "Since he's teething you'll even see now that he can now potentially chew holes in them. Now, again there is no rush with getting him off of these; most kids his age still find comfort in them. He may even stop on his own if he keeps chewing holes, but you'll have to at least make sure to check them every couple weeks and dispose of any that become damaged. I'd also recommend maybe some teething rings to help." Dr. Smiley explained to Didi
"I see, alright thank you again so much Dr. Smiley." Didi thanked the doctor for the information, taking the damaged pacifier from him. She sighed, relieved that unlike with Dr. Homer there was no real push to get Dil off of his bottle or binkie right then and now.
"Again no problem, it's my job after all. Now let's finish up here so we can get you all out of here." Dr. Smiley grinned
The rest of the appointment went smoothly as Dr. Smiley cleaned Dil's one tooth and showed Didi how to use the brush to help clean Dil's teeth properly. As Didi finished checking out with the receptionist by this point Dil just wanted his pacifier back as he tried to reach for it from Didi's hand.
"Oh no no Dilly sweetie this one is broken, mommy has to throw it away." Didi noticed Dil was trying to access the pacifier in her hand that was holding him.
Dil squirmed and whimpered trying to get the pacifier as Didi decided to throw out the damaged pacifier into the trashcan nearby. In immediate response Dil began tearing up as he began to cry. He needed that binkie and his mommy just threw it away. He had a right to be upset.
"Aw sweetie, it's okay, hold on!" Didi exclaimed, scrabbling in a panic to locate the backup pacifier in the diaper bag as she placed it into Dil's mouth
This of course remedied the issue as Dil calmed as he now once again had something to sooth his gum pain.
"All better now." Didi cooed as they left out of the office's front entrance and over to the car where she strapped in Dil before helping Tommy get strapped into his car seat as well.
"Now how about we get you two some nice fresh air at the park." Didi hummed as she moved to get in the front seat.
Leaving the parking lot, Didi made her way along the road on the way to the local playground. Tommy and Dil both began babbling happily, excited to hear they were going to the park. This trip to the park however was going to go much different than Dil or Tommy could have ever imagined.
What will happen once the Pickles boys arrive at the playground? Find out next time!
