Zelda woke up to the sound of a bird pecking at her window. She stretched, yawned, and got out of bed. She walked over to the window and banged on it to get the bird to go away. She stared out at the beautiful scenery of Tristaine.
Then she realized what day it was, and saw that she was almost late.
Today was the day that the second year students at her school, which included her, would summon their familiars.
She quickly took off her nightgown and got dressed in her school uniform, which consisted of a white blouse, black cloak, a short black skirt, black shoes, and tall thin black stockings. She put her blonde hair up in it's usual braided bun and went downstairs for breakfast. However, she forgot her wand and had to go back to get it.
After grabbing it, she met up in the dining hall with her friend Louise.
"Hi Louise"! She called out, but there was no answer.
Louise was sitting alone and staring at her breakfast. Zelda sat down next to her and began to eat quickly.
"Is everything ok Louise"? She asked again.
Louise turned to face her, and Zelda recognized the sheer terror in her eyes.
"Are you nervous?" Zelda asked.
Louise nodded her head.
"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be able to summon a great familiar" Zelda encouraged.
"It's not that, it's just that yesterday I told Kirche that I would summon the best familiar ever" Louise said.
Zelda was about to say something else when Mr. Colbert came in ringing a hand bell.
"Second years, it's time to go to the pentagon"! He shouted.
Zelda quickly shoved the rest of her food in her mouth and joined the group of second years that had begun to lineup.
Once everyone had been accounted for, they began to walk to the ritual site.
On the way there, they passed through town. Most of the commoners ignored them and went about their daily activities, but some waved. The couple mages that they passed wished them luck.
Soon they were in the clearing. Mr. Colbert arranged everyone in a large circle, and pulled out an old piece of parchment.
"Today is the day that you shall be tested by the pentagon of elements. Summoning a familiar is your task, and if you fail to produce one, you shall be expelled. Not only will you have to summon a familiar, but you must bond with it as well. Now, who wants to go first"? Mr. Colbert read.
A young man with blonde hair raised his hand and stepped forward.
"I will"! He said with a flourish.
Zelda rolled her eyes at him. The boy's name was Guiche de Grammont. He was always over the top, and was admired by many girls. He was a show off and thought he was so amazing because he was the son of a famous general.
He stood on the pentagon and said his prepared spell.
His familiar dug up from the ground. It turned out to be a giant, ugly mole, and many of the students laughed, including Zelda.
Next was a boy who summoned a mysterious one eyed creature. Then a girl who summoned a small frog. Kirche summoned a large fire breathing lizard. The most impressive of all though, was Tabitha's wind dragon. Finally, there were only two students left.
"Are there any students left"? Mr Colbert asked.
Immediately all the students pointed to Zelda, and others pointed to Louise.
"Just Louise the Zero and Pointy Ears"! Cried Kirche.
This made all the students laugh, and they pushed Louise and Zelda to the front.
"Miss Vallie and Miss Harkinian, which one of you wants to go first" Mr. Colbert asked once everyone had stopped laughing.
Zelda stepped forward, not wanting to be last.
She stepped up onto the ancient stone pentagon. She pulled out her wand, which was pretty much just a pair of her great grandmother's white gloves. It was an odd wand, but it was a family heirloom. Zelda was proud of it, and slipped on the gloves. She held out her hands and began to recite the spell that she had crafted.
"By the power of my great grandmother. I summon my familiar from this vast universe. I call upon the goddesses Nayru, Farore, Din, and Hylia. Send me my familiar"! Zelda said.
Her gloves began to glow, and a beam of light shot up from the pedestal. When the bean disappeared, there was a man standing in front of her. She gasped at the sight of his ears, which were pointed just like her's. Many of the students gasped and pointed at him.
The man had dirty blonde hair that was partially tied back. He had blue eyes and a fixed expression. He wore a light blue tunic with white markings that formed a sword, tan pants, brown boots, and he carried a sword and shield on his back.
He looked very surprised when he saw Zelda and the other students. He turned to speak to Zelda, but it was a language that she didn't understand.
Zelda was terrified of what she had summoned, and was about to run when Mr Colbert told her to complete the ceremony.
Zelda turned to him reluctantly, pointed her hand down. The man kneeled down in front of her.
"I really don't want to do this," Zelda told herself.
She leaned down, and kissed him.
After he realized what she was doing he pulled away. Zelda spit on the grass with disgust. Then he began clenching his teeth in pain, and held his left hand. His rune was being branded onto him. After a few seconds Zelda walked over to see the runes, but was shocked to find that instead of runes, there was a symbol made of three shaded triangles, with a blank one in the middle. He looked up at her and immediately passed out. Zelda caught him, but he was heavier than she expected, and he collapsed on her.
She ended up having to use a levitation spell to get him off the ground. Several of the students were laughing as she set him down outside the circle of students.
"What an…interesting familiar Ms. Harkinian. I believe you should take him to your room immediately. Make sure to be there when he wakes up" Mr. Colbert said.
"But what about Louise"? Zelda asked.
"She will do her summoning now, but you must take care of your familiar" Mr. Colbert said sternly.
Zelda sighed and used the levitation spell again to take him to her dorm. On the way there, several students stopped to gawk at her.
Zelda laid her new familiar down on her bed.
Then, she immediately went to research the rune on his hand.
