The Burden of Lineage
"Time is the most undefinable yet paradoxical of things; the past is gone, the future is not come, and the present becomes the past even while we attempt to define it." - Charles Caleb Colton
Friday, 3rd September 1976
James Potter sat beside Sirius Black in the Great Hall, his attention fixed on the bustling activity around them. It was the third of September in 1976, marking the beginning of their sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. James leaned in, his tone serious as he addressed his friend.
"Your cousin is quite an odd character, Pads," he observed, his voice laced with sincerity.
A snort of amusement escaped Sirius, who was diligently scanning the assortment of desserts laid out before them. His eyes sparkled mischievously as he responded, his search for custard tartlets undeterred.
"You'll have to be more specific, Prongs. We Black folk take great pride in our peculiarities."
James's gaze shifted towards the Ravenclaw table, where Hermione Black sat with her companion, Barty Crouch Jr., engrossed in their breakfast. The sight of her piqued James's curiosity. Hermione, a fellow Ravenclaw in the same year as him, held a unique position within the Black family. She was a first cousin once removed of Sirius Black III and Regulus Arcturus Black, Sirius's younger brother. James leaned closer to Sirius, his voice low and inquisitive.
"I'm referring to the Ravenclaw girl, mate," he clarified, his tone filled with intrigue.
Seated to James's left, Remus Lupin lifted his head from his plate, having enjoyed a filling English breakfast. A soft chuckle escaped his lips as he joined the conversation.
"Aye, she's certainly an intriguing one," Remus commented, his tone laced with amusement. "But that's quite the pot calling the kettle black, Black," he concluded, sharing a laugh with James.
Sirius erupted into a boisterous laughter, his amusement echoing through the Great Hall. "You've hit the nail on the head, Moony!" he exclaimed, finding Remus's remark amusing.
The trio continued to share a light-hearted chuckle, savoring the camaraderie they had cultivated over the years. However, their laughter subsided as Peter Pettigrew finally joined them. Peter, known for his deep slumber, often lagged behind in their morning routines. The Marauders had grown accustomed to letting him sleep in while they made their way to the Great Hall for breakfast.
Peter hastily piled his plate with food, his eyes darting around the table as he tried to catch up on the conversation. Sensing Peter's confusion, Remus offered a warning.
"Heads up, Wormy. You've got fifteen minutes before classes start," he remarked, diverting Peter's attention away from his missed moment.
Remus then turned his focus back to James, his curiosity piqued. His gaze shifted towards the Ravenclaw students, particularly Hermione Black, who was rising from her seat, accompanied by Barty Crouch, who hurriedly grabbed a chocolate eclair before joining his best friend.
"Anyway, James," Remus began, his voice thoughtful. "What sparked this sudden interest in the peculiarities of the Black family, especially when it comes to the Ravenclaw one?" he inquired, his eyes lingering on Hermione's retreating figure.
Sirius's voice brimmed with delight as he gleefully shared the information. Remus couldn't help but raise an eyebrow, observing James's reaction. To his surprise, James's posture stiffened ever so slightly, and a faint blush tinted his cheeks. Could it be that James was feeling somewhat embarrassed?
"James and Hermione shared a few dances at her debutante ball over the summer," Sirius revealed, unable to contain his amusement.
Remus's eyes narrowed as he posed a pointed question, his curiosity evident. He scrutinized James, awaiting an explanation.
"And after dancing with her, you suddenly became aware of Hermione Black's peculiarities?" Remus inquired, his voice laced with shrewdness.
James shook his head, his expression thoughtful. "Nah, it's not like that, Moony. It's just that I never really took notice of her before. I mean, I've always known about her, but it's curious how she excels in every single class, yet the teachers don't seem to praise her as much as they do with my Lily-flower," James explained, a hint of intrigue in his voice.
Hermione Black's exceptional academic performance was undeniable. Since their days at Hogwarts began, she had consistently excelled in every single class. However, unlike Lily, who always eagerly raised her hand to answer questions, Hermione remained reserved, only participating when directly called upon by the teachers.
Even Barty Crouch, her closest friend and a formidable academic rival of Lily's, refrained from volunteering in class. It seemed that Hermione and Barty shared a similar approach, preferring to showcase their knowledge when prompted rather than actively seeking attention.
Sirius offered a rare insight into the dynamics of his own family, shedding light on the contrasting approaches of the Blacks and Lily Evans.
"That's because Evans is a teacher's pet. The Blacks have never sought that kind of attention," Sirius explained, his voice tinged with a mix of pride and resignation. "Even Crouch has Black blood running through his veins on his father's side."
Indeed, the tangled web of pureblood connections in British wizarding society was intricate. James himself was reminded of his own ties to the Black family. His great-granduncle, Charlus Potter, had married Dorea Black, making him related to the Blacks through marriage. Dorea, in turn, was the sister of Belvina, who had married into the Burke family. Additionally, Dorea had four brothers: Phineas, who had been disowned for his support of Muggle rights, Sirius Black II, who had married a Gamp, Cygnus Black II, who had married a Bulstrode, and Arcturus Black II, who had married a Yaxley.
James found himself surprised by his own recollection of the seemingly trivial pureblood lessons imparted by his mother, Euphemia. His gaze flickered to the Slytherin table, where he could spot familiar surnames such as Burke, Crabbe, McMillan, Rosier, Yaxley, Bulstrode, and Gamp. It was a visual reminder of the deep-rooted pureblood connections within the house.
Yet, there were exceptions that James couldn't ignore. He remembered that Barty Crouch Jr.'s father had been a Ravenclaw, while his grandfather, Caspar, had been sorted into Slytherin. Barty's grandaunts, Callidora and Cedrella, had married into the Longbottom and Weasley families, respectively. The Longbottoms and Weasleys had a long-standing history of being sorted into Gryffindor, contrasting with the traditional Slytherin associations of the Blacks. Cedrella's disownment by the Black family served as a stark reminder of their aversion to the Weasleys, whom they deemed notorious blood traitors.
James recalled that Hermione Black's own aunts, Ophelia and Lyra, had recently entered into marriages with the Fawley and Parkinson families, respectively. These unions were significant, as the Fawley and Parkinsons were among the prestigious families listed in the preposterous Pure-Blood Directory, known as the Sacred Twenty-Eight. It served as yet another testament to the intricate tapestry that defined the Black family, with their connections extending to some of the most prominent and influential families in Wizarding Britain. Even Hermione's mother was from a Sacred Twenty-Eight family as Selena Black was a Selwyn at birth.
James's memory flashed back to one of the rare occasions when he had visited Sirius at Grimmauld Place. The ancestral home of the Black family had witnessed generations of expansion and contraction, adapting to accommodate its inhabitants. It was during that visit that James had encountered the grand tapestry that adorned one of the walls, an awe-inspiring sight. The tapestry exuded an aura of age and magnificence, its golden threads still shimmering with a brilliance that revealed a sprawling family tree stretching back to the Middle Ages, at least as far as James could discern.
Etched in large letters at the very top of the tapestry were the words that defined the legacy of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black: 'Toujours pur' - 'Always pure.' It was a phrase that carried with it the weight of the family's commitment to preserving their pureblood lineage throughout the ages, a mantra that seemed to echo through the generations represented in the tapestry.
Startled by Remus's accidental bump, James's attention snapped back to the present. Remus stood up, preparing to head to class, while Peter hastily finished the remaining morsels on his plate. Clearing his throat with a gulp of pumpkin juice, Peter signalled his readiness to join the others. Sirius let out a sigh, resigning himself to following the last-minute stragglers out of the Great Hall.
James, too, rose from his seat, leaving behind his thoughts about Hermione Black's peculiarities for the time being. He joined his friends, forming a tight-knit group as they made their way towards their Transfiguration class, leaving the Great Hall behind and focusing their attention on the day's lessons ahead.
The Marauders hurriedly navigated the familiar shortcuts, determined to reach their Transfiguration class on time. The corridors flew by as they expertly maneuvered through hidden passages and secret staircases, managing to arrive just as the bell resounded through the halls. James quickly settled into a seat near the front, with Sirius taking his place beside him. Remus and Peter occupied the seats in front of them, completing their tight-knit group.
Their Transfiguration teacher and Gryffindor Head of House, Professor McGonagall, awaited them behind her desk. With everyone settled and prepared for the lesson, she wasted no time and delved into her program for the year. The syllabus included a range of topics, such as nonverbal spells, human transfiguration (such as Crinus Muto), bird-conjuring charm, and other conjuring spells. The list continued with intriguing transformations: cauldron cakes to cabbages, teacup to gerbil, feather duster to ferret, pawn to queen, flobberworm to fritter, gnomes to lawn gnomes, puffskein to paperweight, fairy cakes to fairies, and even bowling ball to balloon.
As Professor McGonagall outlined the transformative magic they would be studying, the classroom buzzed with anticipation, and the Marauders eagerly prepared themselves for the practical applications and challenges that lay ahead.
Transfiguration and Charms held a special place in James's heart, being his favorite subjects. He had reason to take pride in his accomplishments from the previous year's Ordinary Wizarding Levels (O.W.L.s), having earned Outstanding grades in all of his core subjects: Charms, Transfiguration, Astronomy, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, and Potions. These exceptional results were a testament to his dedication and aptitude in these areas of magical study.
However, James couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment when it came to his elective classes. In Arithmancy and Ancient Runes, he had only managed to achieve an Acceptable grade. It was a slight setback, especially considering the prerequisite of earning an Outstanding grade in both subjects to be eligible to study Alchemy as an elective in sixth year. As a result, James had decided not to pursue Alchemy and instead made the difficult decision to drop Astronomy and History of Magic for that year.
Looking ahead to his upcoming seventh year, James realized that he would have to sit for a challenging total of seven N.E.W.T.s, which was certainly a demanding workload. However, he was determined and confident in his abilities, knowing that he was no slouch when it came to his studies. He was ready to tackle the rigorous academic journey that lay ahead of him.
As Professor McGonagall continued with her lesson, she surprised the class by announcing that the morning's double period would be dedicated to an extensive revision of the previous year's material. The Marauders listened attentively as they delved into the familiar topics they had covered the previous year. They revisited spells such as the Inanimatus Conjurus Spell, which brought life to inanimate objects, and the Switching Spell, which allowed for the swapping of two objects.
The revision also covered various transformative spells, including the Owl to Opera Glasses spell, the Vanishing Spell, and the Partial Vanishment technique. They further explored transformations from a ferret to a feather duster, a goldfinch to a Golden Snitch, a gobstone to a skunk, an armadillo to a pillow, and even a thimble to a Thestral.
The revisited curriculum concluded with the Cauldron to Badger spell, a challenging transfiguration that required precision and mastery. The Marauders immersed themselves in the review, eagerly refreshing their knowledge and skills, knowing that their summer work would be collected at the end of the class.
As the class progressed, James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter actively participated, engaging with the material and showcasing their expertise in transfiguration. They were determined to make the most of the revision session and impress their professor with their grasp of the subject matter.
Having completed the spells and revisions, James took a moment to survey the Transfiguration class that the Gryffindors shared with the remaining students who had opted for N.E.W.T. level Transfiguration. As he glanced around, it came as no surprise to him that several of his classmates from Ravenclaw and Slytherin had managed to achieve an Exceeds Expectations grade in Transfiguration. Their dedication and hard work in the subject were evident.
However, James also noted that three Hufflepuffs had qualified for the N.E.W.T. level, which was a testament to their commitment and skill in Transfiguration. Professor McGonagall, renowned for her high standards, had made it clear that she would only accept students into her N.E.W.T. classes if they achieved at least an Exceeds Expectations grade. She believed that those who fell below this standard would struggle to handle the rigorous coursework that lay ahead.
As James observed his fellow classmates, he couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration and healthy competition, knowing that he would be working alongside some of the most talented students in Transfiguration.
James's gaze shifted to the back of the class, where Hermione Black and Barty Crouch Jr. were seated. It appeared that they had already completed the required classwork for the day, as they were engrossed in practicing spells from the sixth year curriculum. James watched with fascination as the pair demonstrated their proficiency in nonverbal spellcasting, conjuring various objects such as miniature tables, vases, and even a cat.
Hermione's finesse and control over her magic were evident as she effortlessly performed the spells, displaying a level of skill that surpassed expectations. Barty, too, showcased his own talent, complementing Hermione's abilities with his precise spellcasting.
James couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration and intrigue towards Hermione's exceptional abilities. He found himself drawn to her dedication and aptitude in the magical arts, appreciating her unique talents that set her apart from the rest of the class.
Impressed and inspired by Hermione's prowess, James felt a surge of determination. As the class progressed, he discreetly opened the sixth year Transfiguration book, eager to get a head start on the new material. He immersed himself in its pages, absorbing the knowledge and techniques outlined within.
By the end of the class, James was pleased with his progress. With a mischievous glint in his eye, he selected a cauldron cake from the breakfast table, using it as his practice target. Focusing his concentration, he expertly executed the Transfiguration spell, transforming the delectable treat into a humble cabbage. A sense of accomplishment filled him as he marveled at the successful transformation.
Encouraged by his achievement, James couldn't resist testing his skills further. Seizing the opportunity as Professor McGonagall passed by his table, he skillfully performed a nonverbal conjuring spell, summoning a delicate rose into existence. The timing couldn't have been more perfect, as the elegant flower materialized just as the professor's gaze fell upon him.
James couldn't help but feel a surge of satisfaction and pride at his successful displays of Transfiguration. He couldn't wait to further hone his skills and continue exploring the fascinating world of transformative magic.
Professor McGonagall, known for her strict demeanor and high standards, couldn't help but be impressed by James's display of advanced magical skill. Her stern expression softened slightly, revealing a glimmer of surprise and admiration as she observed his successful transfigurations.
After a moment of silent acknowledgment, Professor McGonagall's lips curved into a faint smile. She recognized James's dedication and talent, and she felt compelled to reward his exceptional performance.
"Take ten points for Gryffindor, Mr. Potter," she declared, her voice carrying a note of approval. Her gesture served as both recognition for his achievement and a subtle encouragement to continue pushing his limits in the field of Transfiguration.
A swell of pride filled James's chest as he gratefully accepted the points. The acknowledgment from his professor further fueled his determination to excel in his studies and make a positive impact within the walls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
As the professor moved away, James's initial pride gave way to a frown. His mind couldn't help but dwell on the disparity he had witnessed. Hermione and Barty had been performing similar advanced magic, if not more impressive, yet they hadn't received any points for their efforts.
A feeling of unease settled in James's stomach as he contemplated what seemed like blatant favoritism from his Head of House. He had always admired Professor McGonagall's expertise and fairness, but this discrepancy left him questioning the integrity of her actions. It seemed unjust that his own achievements were rewarded while others, equally deserving, were seemingly overlooked.
James's sense of fairness and loyalty to his friends intensified his disappointment. He couldn't shake the feeling that Hermione and Barty deserved recognition for their exceptional abilities, just as he had received. He made a mental note to discuss his concerns with his friends and perhaps seek guidance from trusted mentors or professors who could shed light on the situation.
As the bell rang, signaling the end of class, James's determination grew stronger. He made his way towards Professor McGonagall's desk, intending to address the perceived unfairness he had witnessed, both for himself and for Hermione and Barty. It gnawed at him to consider whether this favoritism towards Gryffindor students had always been present in Transfiguration, potentially overshadowing the achievements of students from other houses.
He pondered the fact that Professor Slughorn, the former Head of Slytherin House, was known for playing favorites with his own students, though it was somewhat expected from the cunning and ambitious nature associated with the house of snakes. However, James couldn't recall whether Professor Flitwick, the Head of Ravenclaw, exhibited any biases towards his own house. It was certainly unexpected for the Head of Hufflepuff House, once occupied by Professor Sprout when he had first started at Hogwarts, to display such favoritism.
James was determined to seek clarity on the matter. He wanted to engage in a respectful conversation with Professor McGonagall, discussing his concerns about the potential imbalance in her approach to recognizing student achievements. He hoped that by addressing the issue, he could shed light on the importance of fairness and impartiality in the classroom, fostering an environment where all students could thrive and be acknowledged for their abilities, regardless of their house affiliation.
"Any questions regarding today's class , Potter?" asked James favourite teacher, the stern tone for which she was known never leaving her.
James approached Professor McGonagall's desk, his determination unwavering despite the sternness in her voice. He took a deep breath, ready to address his concerns respectfully.
Meeting Professor McGonagall's gaze with unwavering determination, James took a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking. He understood the stern tone that was characteristic of his favorite teacher, and it only fueled his resolve to express his concerns respectfully.
"Actually, Professor," James began, maintaining a respectful tone, "I do have a question regarding today's class. I couldn't help but notice that Hermione and Barty were performing some truly impressive magic, yet they weren't acknowledged or awarded any points for their efforts."
His voice remained steady as he continued, "I've always admired your fairness and dedication to your students, but this discrepancy left me feeling unsettled. It seemed like there may have been a slight imbalance in how achievements were recognized, favoring Gryffindor students."
James paused briefly, ensuring he was articulating his thoughts clearly before proceeding. "I believe that all students, regardless of their house, should have an equal opportunity to be recognized for their exceptional abilities. It's important for us to cultivate an environment where everyone can thrive and be acknowledged for their achievements."
He maintained eye contact, his expression conveying a mixture of respect, concern, and a genuine desire for fairness. James hoped that his words would convey his intention to address the issue constructively and promote a more equitable environment within the classroom.
Professor McGonagall regarded James with a keen gaze, her stern expression unyielding. Her silence stretched for a few moments as she contemplated his words. Finally, she responded in a measured tone, her voice carrying the weight of her experience and authority.
"Mr. Potter, I appreciate your observation and your dedication to fairness," she began, her tone firm but not devoid of understanding. "As a teacher, it is my duty to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed and be recognized for their abilities."
She paused, her gaze unwavering. "However, it is also important to note that my assessment of students' performances takes into account various factors, including consistency, mastery, and overall growth. The points awarded are based on a combination of these elements and not solely on individual displays of skill in a single class session."
Professor McGonagall's words carried a sense of authority and wisdom, as she continued, "I assure you, Mr. Potter, that I do not intentionally favor any particular house. I strive to provide a fair and balanced learning environment for all students under my guidance."
She leaned slightly forward, her expression softening just a fraction. "Nevertheless, I appreciate your perspective, and I will take your concerns into consideration as I continue to evaluate and guide my students. Your dedication to fairness is commendable, and I encourage you to approach me with any further concerns or observations you may have."
James felt a mix of emotions—gratitude for being heard, but also an understanding that change might not come overnight. He nodded respectfully, acknowledging Professor McGonagall's response.
"Thank you, Professor," he said sincerely. "I trust in your judgment and appreciate your willingness to listen. I will continue to strive for fairness and support a positive learning environment for all."
With that, James took a step back, knowing that he had voiced his concerns and initiated a conversation that would contribute to fostering a more equitable classroom atmosphere. He left the desk with a sense of satisfaction, reassured that his words had been heard, and hopeful that they would contribute to a positive change in the future.
James returned to his seat, gathering his belongings as he prepared to leave the class. As he walked towards the exit, he noticed Professor McGonagall's approving smile, a sign that she acknowledged his willingness to address his concerns respectfully.
Stepping out into the corridor, James found his friends waiting for him. With a subtle nod, he signaled to them that it was time to move on to their next class. They fell into step alongside him, their camaraderie evident as they made their way through the bustling halls of Hogwarts.
In their dorm room, James and Sirius found themselves alone, as Remus was occupied with his prefect duties and Peter was engrossed in his Astrology and Divination homework. Taking advantage of the moment, Sirius brought up the topic that had been on his mind since breakfast.
"Anyway, why did you bring up my cousin's oddities earlier, Jamie?" Sirius inquired, attempting to remove his pants with an amusing lack of success. In his clumsy endeavor, he ended up stumbling and falling backside-first into his open trunk, much to James's amusement.
James couldn't contain his amusement as he observed Sirius's predicament. Abandoning his own comfortable position, sitting cross-legged on his bed, he swiftly made his way over to his struggling friend. Grinning from ear to ear, he reached out a hand to offer assistance, ready to pull Sirius out of the trunk.
The room was filled with James's laughter, the sound echoing through the air. His amusement was contagious, reflecting the camaraderie and lightheartedness that defined their friendship.
"Oh, Padfoot, you never fail to entertain," James chuckled, his grin still wide and infectious. The shared laughter filled the room, creating a vibrant atmosphere of joy and camaraderie.
As the laughter subsided, James's expression turned serious as he delved into a conversation about Sirius's cousin, Hermione. The peculiarity surrounding her behavior had caught his attention, prompting him to share his observations.
"Indeed, it does seem unusual," James replied, his tone reflecting a mix of curiosity and concern. "While I understand the desire for privacy, it appears that Hermione takes it to an extreme. Even your cousin Bellatrix seems to revel in provoking reactions from others."
A flicker of pure hatred flashed across Sirius's face at the mention of Bellatrix, his least favorite cousin. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before responding. "When Hermione was very young, around two or three years old, if I recall correctly, she was often in a perpetually grumpy and despondent state," Sirius recounted. "My uncle and aunt consulted a healer who suspected that Hermione was suffering from depression."
James's disbelief was evident in his response. "Depressive as a toddler? How is that possible?" he questioned, struggling to comprehend such a condition manifesting at such a young age.
Sirius pondered James's question, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "To be honest, your guess is as good as mine," he replied, his voice filled with a hint of uncertainty. "As we were both the same age, with Hermione being just a few weeks older than me, we were often sent to play together since we lived in the family house. But she would often choose to stay in a corner and read. She had a remarkable aptitude for reading and learned at an early age."
Sirius's recollection painted a picture of a young Hermione who found solace in books, immersing herself in the world of literature rather than engaging in typical childhood activities. The early development of her reading skills hinted at a deep-seated intelligence and an innate curiosity that set her apart from her peers.
"I suppose she found comfort and solace in books, even at such a young age," Sirius continued, his voice tinged with a mixture of admiration and perplexity. "Perhaps her inclination towards knowledge and solitude contributed to her introspective nature."
James listened attentively, his curiosity piqued by Sirius's insights into their cousin's early years. The enigma surrounding Hermione only seemed to deepen, leaving him eager to uncover more about the complexities that lay beneath the surface.
Sirius's voice held a sense of relief as he continued to share details about Hermione's family. "Altair Black, Hermione's father, is the current heir of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black," he explained. "When Hermione's younger brother grows older, he will assume the responsibility of carrying on the family legacy."
The mention of Hermione's younger brother, Leo Black, brought a noticeable sense of relief to Sirius's demeanor. The burden of being the heir to the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black had weighed heavily on his shoulders for years. With Leo's birth, the responsibility had shifted, alleviating some of the pressure that Sirius had long carried.
Reflecting on their family tree, Sirius went on to explain the lineage. Regulus Black, Hermione's grandfather and Sirius's granduncle, had held the position of the eldest son among three siblings: Regulus himself, their great-aunt Lycoris Black, and Sirius's own grandfather, Arturus Black III. Following the pureblood seniority rules, Regulus had been the previous heir of the House of Black until his passing the previous year.
The knowledge of this lineage and the succession within the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black revealed a complex web of family ties and responsibilities. Sirius's words shed light on the intricacies of their pureblood lineage and the traditions that governed the hierarchy within their family.
James listened attentively, absorbing the information and gaining a deeper understanding of the weight that family heritage and expectations placed on Hermione and Sirius alike. It further emphasized the intricacies and complexities of the wizarding world's pureblood culture, leaving James contemplating the significance of bloodline and tradition in their society.
Sirius's scowl deepened as he expressed his disdain for the pureblood traditions that his family still adhered to. The frustration in his voice was palpable as he reflected on Hermione's position as the eldest child and potential heiress of the House of Black.
"It's absurd and archaic," Sirius stated, his tone laced with a mix of anger and disappointment. "The idea that Hermione's worth is reduced to her dowry or her ability to produce heirs is repugnant. It diminishes her as an individual and disregards her own dreams and aspirations."
His words carried a strong sense of rebellion against the traditional expectations that their pureblood lineage imposed. Sirius's own rejection of the values and customs of his family was evident, as he saw firsthand the detrimental effects they had on individuals like Hermione.
"I believe that Hermione should be valued for her intellect, her character, and her own unique abilities," Sirius continued passionately. "She should have the freedom to pursue her own path in life, unencumbered by the constraints of outdated traditions."
Sirius's conviction and his desire for Hermione's autonomy were clear. He stood firmly against the notion of reducing her worth to a mere bargaining chip in a marriage arrangement, believing that she deserved to be seen and appreciated for her true self.
James listened intently, his respect for Sirius deepening as he witnessed his friend's passionate stance against the oppressive expectations of their pureblood heritage. It was a reminder of the importance of individuality and the need to challenge societal norms that devalue and restrict the potential of others.
Hermione walked towards the common room. Having just returned from the library, her dedication to her studies was evident. To gain entry, she approached the bronze eagle-shaped knocker, knowing that a logical riddle awaited her.
The common room, adorned with the colors and emblems of Ravenclaw, exuded an atmosphere of scholarly pursuits and curiosity. The walls were lined with bookshelves filled with ancient tomes and enchanted artifacts, while cozy nooks and study tables offered quiet spaces for contemplation and learning.
As Hermione stood before the knocker, she prepared herself for the intellectual challenge it would present. She relished the opportunity to exercise her sharp mind and problem-solving skills, knowing that gaining access to the common room would be a fitting reward for her intellectual prowess.
With a determined gaze, Hermione listened attentively as the knocker posed its riddle, her mind working swiftly to decipher the logical solution. She contemplated the puzzle with a focused intensity, ready to prove her wit and secure entry into the haven of knowledge and like-minded individuals that awaited her inside.
I have cities but no houses, forests but no trees, and rivers but no water. What am I?
Hermione's response was swift and confident as she supplied the correct answer to the riddle. "A map," she stated, her voice steady and resolute.
The bronze eagle-shaped knocker seemed to come to life, its eyes gleaming with approval. It swung open to reveal the entrance to the Ravenclaw common room, inviting Hermione inside.
With a satisfied smile, Hermione stepped through the entrance, greeted by the warm ambiance of her house's common room. The Ravenclaw common room, located within one of the castle's majestic towers, welcomed those who sought the pursuit of knowledge and intellectual exploration. Accessible only through a narrow spiral staircase, the common room revealed itself as a wide, circular space filled with an air of tranquility and inspiration.
Graceful arched windows adorned the walls, allowing soft sunlight to filter in and bathe the room in a gentle glow. The walls themselves were adorned with rich blue and bronze silks, their elegant textures adding a touch of sophistication to the space. The domed ceiling, an artistic masterpiece, was a canvas depicting the vast expanse of the night sky, complete with shimmering stars that seemed to twinkle and dance above.
Underneath, a midnight-blue carpet stretched across the floor, mirroring the celestial theme above and lending a sense of serenity to the room. It invited students to sit, read, and engage in thought-provoking conversations.
Tables, chairs, and bookcases filled the expanse of the common room, providing ample space for scholarly pursuits and study sessions. The furniture, crafted with care, blended seamlessly with the surroundings, showcasing a combination of comfort and elegance.
At one corner of the common room, a white marble statue of Rowena Ravenclaw, the house's revered founder, stood in all her regal splendor. Her presence symbolized wisdom, intellect, and the pursuit of knowledge that Ravenclaws held dear.
Just beside the entrance leading to the dormitories above, the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw offered a sense of guidance and protection, as if watching over the students who sought solace and inspiration within the walls of their common room.
The Ravenclaw common room embodied a harmonious blend of artistry and intellect, a sanctuary for those who aspired to broaden their horizons and delve into the mysteries of the world. Within its hallowed space, Ravenclaws found a place to cultivate their minds, share ideas, and embark on intellectual adventures that would shape their academic journeys at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Hermione's quick scan of the common room confirmed that Barty had already retired to his dorm for the evening. With a sense of contentment, she made her way towards her own dormitory, ready to settle into a space of tranquility and personal reflection.
Ascending the stairs, Hermione entered the dormitory shared by the Ravenclaw students of her year. The room was adorned with individual beds, each one reflecting the unique personality of its occupant. Books and parchment were scattered across desks, evidence of the students' dedication to their studies.
Finding her designated bed, Hermione took a moment to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that enveloped the dormitory. The soft glow of moonlight seeped through the windows, casting ethereal shadows across the room. The tranquil ambiance provided the perfect setting for introspection and quiet contemplation.
Settling onto her bed, Hermione retrieved a well-worn book from her bag, eager to lose herself in its pages. With the gentle rustle of parchment and the faint whisper of turning pages, she immersed herself in the world of knowledge and imagination.
Hermione's peaceful solitude was abruptly interrupted by an insistent knock on the window nearest to her bed. Curiosity piqued, she hurried to the window and was taken aback to find her father's majestic owl, Stormeye, perched on the windowsill. A letter was securely tied to its leg, a message awaiting her attention.
With a mix of surprise and anticipation, Hermione swiftly unlatched the window and welcomed Stormeye inside. The owl gracefully glided through the opening, its wings spread wide before settling on her bed, talons gripping the edge with precision.
Carefully untangling the letter from Stormeye's leg, Hermione thanked the owl with a gentle stroke before it took off, disappearing into the night sky. The presence of the letter intrigued her, for it was uncommon to receive such correspondence directly from her father. Her mind raced with possibilities, eager to uncover the contents of the message.
Taking a seat on her bed, Hermione unfolded the letter, her eyes scanning the words that awaited her. The script was familiar, her father's handwriting etched onto the parchment.
My Dearest Hermione,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. As your 17th birthday approaches, a significant milestone in our pureblood traditions, I find it necessary to discuss an important matter with you. Please understand that my intentions are rooted in the preservation of our family legacy and ensuring your future happiness.
According to our ancestral customs, it is expected that a contractual marriage should have already been arranged on your behalf by this stage. However, I have deliberately held back in adhering strictly to this tradition, as I believe in your right to find love and companionship that transcends mere obligation.
Now, as you come of age, I am compelled to initiate the search for a suitable pureblood suitor for you. It is my duty as the head of our noble House to secure a prosperous and harmonious future for you. I understand that this may come as a shock or even a disappointment, as it deviates from your personal aspirations and desires.
Nevertheless, I implore you to approach this process with an open mind. I am committed to ensuring that any potential match is not only compatible in terms of bloodline and social standing but also respects your individuality, intellect, and aspirations. Love, my dear daughter, is an ideal we shall strive to incorporate within this traditional framework.
I want nothing more than to witness your happiness and fulfillment. It is my hope that, in due course, we will find a suitor who not only aligns with our heritage but also ignites the flame of love within your heart. Should there arise any concerns or preferences you wish to discuss, know that your voice will be heard and taken into careful consideration.
Remember, my beloved Hermione, that our pureblood lineage carries great responsibility, and it is within our power to shape its future. I have faith in your discernment, your strength of character, and your ability to navigate this path with grace and wisdom.
With all my love and unwavering support,
Altair Black
As Hermione read the heartfelt words penned by her father, her scowl deepened, mirroring the conflict within her. The letter outlined the traditional expectations and responsibilities that came with her pureblood heritage, including the initiation of a search for a suitable suitor. While her father expressed a desire for her happiness and emphasized the inclusion of love within the confines of tradition, Hermione felt a surge of frustration and rebellion.
Her mind whirled with conflicting emotions. On one hand, she understood her father's intentions, recognizing the importance of preserving their family legacy and adhering to pureblood customs. However, the notion of an arranged marriage and the limitations it imposed on her personal choices and aspirations gnawed at her fiercely independent spirit.
Hermione's scowl spoke volumes about her determination to forge her own path, to defy the expectations that threatened to confine her. She yearned for a future that honored her individuality, her intellect, and her right to choose her own partner based on love and compatibility.
As her eyes scanned the final words of the letter, her scowl softened, replaced by a resolute expression. She knew that a delicate balance lay ahead—a battle between tradition and personal autonomy. Hermione vowed to approach this challenge with the strength of her convictions, determined to advocate for her own happiness while seeking common ground with her father.
The realization of her previous life as Hermione Granger, and the unexpected circumstances surrounding her rebirth as Hermione Black, added another layer of complexity to her current predicament. Memories of her past life flooded her mind, intertwining with the challenges she faced in the present.
Hermione grappled with a mix of disbelief and confusion. How had she been reborn? Why was she transported back in time before her own birth? These questions gnawed at her, begging for answers that remained elusive.
Keeping her rebirth and knowledge of the future a secret weighed heavily on Hermione's shoulders. She was torn between the desire to change the course of events and the need to maintain the integrity of the timeline. It was a delicate balance, one that required careful consideration and a thorough understanding of the consequences.
As she navigated her dual identities as both Hermione Granger and Hermione Black, the weight of her past life's experiences and the knowledge of future events burdened her. It was a responsibility she had not asked for, but one she felt compelled to carry.
Her scowl deepened as she confronted the complexities of her existence. The frustration and agitation within her grew, fueled by the dissonance between her past, present, and the unknown future that lay ahead. Hermione was determined to find answers, to unravel the mysteries that bound her lives together, and to forge a path that honored both her past and her present.
Hermione's gaze shifted towards the mirror, revealing the changes that her rebirth as Hermione Black had brought upon her physical appearance. The reflection staring back at her portrayed a transformation that extended beyond her inner self.
Her once bushy, frizzy brown hair had been replaced by a cascade of lustrous, curly locks, inherited from the Black lineage. Though her hair retained its dark brown hue, it now possessed the distinct texture and bounce characteristic of the Blacks. It was a stark contrast to the familiar unruliness she had grown accustomed to as Hermione Granger.
As her eyes met her reflection, Hermione noticed the subtle shift in their color. Dark grey with hints of honey brown danced within her gaze, revealing the unique combination that set her apart. Under different lighting conditions, her eyes shimmered, reflecting a depth and complexity that mirrored her own multifaceted nature.
The changes reflected in the mirror were a constant reminder of her dual existence. They served as a tangible representation of the merging of her past and present, embodying the complexities of her reborn identity as Hermione Black.
Hermione's expression softened as she absorbed the image before her. She recognized that her appearance, like her circumstances, had been shaped by forces beyond her control. Yet, it was through these changes that she found strength and resilience, ready to face the challenges that lay ahead.
In the subsequent Transfiguration class, to James's sheer delight and astonishment, both Hermione and Barty received the recognition they deserved for their extraordinary performances and exceptional displays of advanced magic. Professor McGonagall, breaking away from her usual approach, bestowed upon them each 10 well-deserved points, a clear acknowledgment and appreciation of their remarkable talents. The moment served as a gratifying validation, affirming that their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts had not gone unnoticed.
As James's gaze wandered towards the back of the classroom, where the brilliant Ravenclaws were seated, his eyes locked with Hermione's. What he saw in that brief exchange left him utterly amazed. A radiant smile graced her features, illuminating her face with a warmth and grace he had never truly witnessed before. In that instant, it was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing a side of Sirius's cousin that James had never fully observed or appreciated.
Caught off guard by the captivating smile that adorned Hermione's countenance, James felt his heart skip a beat, his pulse quickening. He couldn't help but acknowledge the undeniable truth: he had never realized just how stunning Hermione looked when her face was lit up with such genuine joy. A subtle, hesitant smile tugged at the corners of James's own lips, reflecting Hermione's gesture of kindness and friendship. In that shared moment, a connection seemed to spark, bringing forth a mix of emotions that both thrilled and bewildered him. Sensing the rush of feelings, James quickly averted his gaze, hoping to regain his composure and redirect his attention to the day's lesson.
The topic at hand was the bird-conjuring spell, Avis. Professor McGonagall demonstrated the incantation and the correct wand movements, guiding the students through the intricacies of the spell. James focused intently, his mind absorbing the instructions and techniques, determined to master the magic before him.
The initial bewilderment that had arisen from the realization of Hermione's stunning beauty and infectious smile slowly receded into the depths of his thoughts. In the midst of the lesson, his mind became consumed by the task at hand, his dedication to learning and improving overpowering any fleeting distractions. With renewed focus, James raised his wand, ready to unleash a flock of birds into existence, the memory of Hermione's smile lingering in the recesses of his mind.
Author note:
Hello everyone,
Yeah, this is a new story. It's being stamping around in my head for some time and I thought I'd better get it out there to see how it would actually look. I'm fairly satisfied with how this 1st chapter turned out. I know that I've put in lot of information about that crap about blood purity and how the Blacks are related to big wizarding names but that'll be important later. Just remember the prominence of the Black family and throw in the Potters and you'll guess that whatever is decided by the head of houses of these families can have a massive impact on Voldemort's campaign.
Hermione's grandfather in this story was really a brother to Sirius' grandfather, Arcturus Black III, the latter was actually the eldest brother but for the sake of the story, it's Hermione gramps who'll be the eldest here. Again, that will be relevant to the rest of the story. I first started writing this story by having Hermione travelling through time and posing as a Black relative from one of the those who'd been disowned along history. The twin to Sirius plotline had already been done so I switched to the current version. Let's have Hermione be a near-royalty pureblood, this might bring a lot of drama.
Also, I'd always thought that James was Charlus Potter's son or grandson until JK mentioned that James' parents were Fleamont and Euphemia Potter. Thus, James is Charlus great grandnephew and Charlus was probably the younger brother of James' great grandad as James and later Harry was considered the heir of the house of Potter. I'll be naming Charlus' brother Peregrine even though he's not really relevant to the story since he's already dead as the mantle of the heir has been passed down to Peregrine's son, Henry, James granddad.
Love,
Ludo13
