75 Years: Different Perspectives

Author's Note: This is a collection of One-Shots told from the point of view of Tributes, people in their Districts and the Capitolites on each of the 75 Hunger Games. I do not own anything

The First Hunger Games: Gemma Turner (16)

Staring at the television screen, I watched as my older brother, Rocky, entered the Arena with twenty-three other Tributes. A few months ago, in the aftermath of the failed three year long rebellion against the Capitol, the Treaty of Treason was announced. In it, as punishment, each of the twelve Districts must send a boy and a girl, aged between twelve and eighteen years old, to a competition called The Hunger Games. There, in an Arena, the children must fight each other until one is left standing. I remember my older brother Rocky being called out by name to be the male representative for District 2. A girl, Danielle Andrews, was selected to be the female District 2 representative. The Capitol only won because they had weapons supplied to them by Stabo Plinth, a munitions manufacturer from District 2. Shortly afterwards, Stabo left the District, taking his wife and eight-year-old son Sejanus with him to the Capitol. Rocky was conscripted into the District 2 Corps, and he had witnessed things no seventeen-year-old have to see. In the later stages of the War, the Capitol had started to use a mountain, The Nut, as a base. Not all of District 2 was happy with the idea of hosting Capitol Forces, only the elite of District 2 was. The District 2 Corps was dissolved and integrated into the Peacekeeping forces, and Rocky was stationed in The Nut. The Nut was also used as a place of torture in the latter stages of the War. Some of the Rebels were turned into Avoxes, some were tortured to death, but whatever went on in there had shook Rocky badly. At night, I often hear him screaming in fear and I have found him crying a few times on the stairs, and after the War, he started leaving a lamp on in his room at night. My eyes turned back to the screen as the Games began.

Day 3 of the Games, and Rocky is still alive. Seven other Tributes are still alive as well: Edgar Parlour from District 1, Polly Lawson from District 4, Eric Odegaard from District 5, Stuart White from District 6, Denzel Wallace from District 8 and Anita Bedford from District 10. Many of the Tributes have died from illness or injury, with two, Robert O'Brien of District 12 and Xavier Morgan of District 11, killed by another Tribute. Robert was killed by Xavier, who in turn, was killed by Erin Grealish, Robert's District Partner. Feeling a bit tired, I went to bed.

As I sat down in front of the screen on Day 4, I saw that Edgar and Rocky were the last two Tributes left alive. The other six Tributes perished during the night. "Edgar" I heard Rocky say as he grasped his sword before unseathing it. Edgar followed, and my brother was fighting the tall District 1 male. Blade clashed against blade, as both boys fought for several hours, each one trying to get the upper hand. Rocky slashed Edgar's arm, however, at the same time he let his guard down and as he prepared to slash again, Edgar thrust his sword into Rocky's chest. "NO!" I screamed as tears ran down my face as the camera lingered over Rocky's dead body. I cannot believe it! My older brother dead.

Several days later it was the funerals of Rocky and Danielle Andrews, the girl who accompanied Rocky on his final journey into the Capitol. The Peacekeepers were forming a guard of honour around Rocky's coffin, as a medal was placed on the coffin. "Danielle and Rocky were brave soldiers of District 2, and for that, they will be buried in the Mausoleum of Courage. Their heroism isn't in vain, for it protected Panem." A representative of Plinth announced as their coffins went into the mausoleum.

A few weeks later, a public park was opened by the mausoleum, to allow the families to grieve. A statue will be placed in the park for every District 2 Tribute killed in the Arena, with the statues of Danielle and Rocky being the first up. With the statues in place, I went to see it. Rocky was standing in his District 2 Corps uniform, a medal on his left breast above his heart. Placing my hand on the marble statue, I whispered "You were my hero, Rocky" before sitting on the bench nearby.

So this is the side story to 75 Years, and some insight into Rocky's life before and after the war as seen through the eyes of his sister Gemma, as well as being a way to flesh out the ill-fated Tributes from 75 Years. But not every Chapter will be told from the POV of the ill-fated Tributes, and will be told from the Capitol, Districts and the Victors.
