Later that day, Hannah found herself in double divination, seated alongside Adrian and Dani.
"Today..." an airy voice broke through a wall of chatter "we will be exploring the art of capnomancy." Trelawney weaved in and out of the tables scattered around the room as she spoke. "You'll be reading smoke from the fire centred at each table. You will interpret this using the bo..." Trelawney's speech was abruptly interrupted by a loud clatter from the trapdoor, and Umbridge squeezing her way through the hole.
"Oh, carry on. Don't mind me." Umbridge squeaked in her unbearably high voice as she clambered into a seat in the corner.
"As I was saying, you will interpret this using the book on each table. Light the fire each ti..."
"Hem hem" Trelawney paused and turned slowly towards Umbridge. "Do you think it appropriate to light fires in a classroom?" Hannah rolled her eyes and whispered to Dani
"You'd think there aren't torches lit around the entire school." Trelawney looked towards the students as if pleading for help.
"Very well, carry on." Umbridge scribbled something down on her clipboard louder than necessary.

Hannah lit the fire first on the table. The smoke billowed in thick plumes, causing Trelawney to gasp loudly.
"Ah, the darkest of omens..." Dani said in a mock-Trelawney voice. Hannah shook her head with a weak smile and turned to Adrian, who looked concerned.
"I should've just taken Care of Magical Creatures," Hannah said as she extinguished her fire. "I don't think I'd want to know the future even if I could read it."
"You know, I think I agree," Dani said as she lit the fire, which similarly emitted thick clouds of smoke. "Imagine learning that you're going to die in a month, or worse, your favourite boy band is going to split up." Adrian extinguished the fire as Trelawney let out another gasp. Hannah watched as Adrian lit the fire, his frown accentuated by the red flicker of light.
"Catastrophe!" Trelawney yelled as Adrian's smoke rolled across the table towards the floor. Dani snickered as Hannah rolled her eyes.
"Hem hem," a sickly voice emitted from behind Dani, causing her to swing her arms in fright and hit the fire pit towards Hannah. "Mr Pucey, might I have a word?" Adrian turned in his seat to look at Umbridge as she started questioning him about Trelawney's teaching practices.
"Fuck, fire is hot." Hannah hissed through clenched teeth as she rubbed her burnt hand.
"Sorry, that woman terrifies me," Dani said apologetically. "But, talking about smoking hot..." Dani whispered under her breath to Hannah, "What's going on between you and Adrian?"
"What do you mean?" Hannah stopped rubbing her hand and looked up at Dani.
"You guys clearly like each other, and he can't keep his eyes off you," Dani whispered with a wink.
"Oh. I guess I've never thought about it." Hannah watched Adrian as he spoke with Umbridge. She couldn't deny that she was comfortable around Adrian. But did she like him? "I've never really... I wouldn't know how to tell..."
"If you like him?"
"Yeah. He could just be a good friend. I wouldn't know. I've never had friends before." Hannah shrugged, still watching Adrian.
"Do you feel the same around me as you do around him?" Hannah considered this for a moment. No. She definitely did not. Hannah fought back a smile as she looked from Adrian to Dani, who was also smiling broadly. Dani inched closer to Hannah. "So, are you going to do anything about it?" Hannah thought. Did Adrian even like her? She could just use legilimency to find out, but what if he didn't? Could she handle finding that out? No. She's best off not knowing at all. Adrian turned back around before Hannah could respond.

Hannah and Adrian walked through the corridors following the divination lesson. Adrian seemed even more forlorn than he had been recently.
"You know this whole divination practice is rubbish, right?" Hannah spoke to Adrian, who was walking slower than usual.
"I know, I'm just worried." He held his hand out to stop Hannah from walking further. "Did you at least want to talk about your mum escaping Azkaban?"
"There's nothing to talk about. It'll probably never concern me." Hannah said without looking up at Adrian.
"Well, I know Professor Snape is concerned, and I'm sure you are, too. I'm not blind." Adrian raised Hannah's chin with his finger to look into her eyes. "You shouldn't be afraid to talk to me. I want to know what you're thinking." Hannah felt her insides do flips as she looked up at Adrian.
"You're going through enough as it is," Hannah responded, forcefully taking her eyes off his. "Plus, I don't want to talk about it in public. Only you, Snape, and Dumbledore know about my parents. I want to keep it that way."
"Wait, you haven't even told Dani?"
"No. She's too innocent, and I'm almost certain she's muggle-born. How do you think she'd react if I told her?"
"Well, it's not like you're a death eater, and you never will be. I'm sure it wouldn't make a difference." Hannah winced at his words.
"If it comes up, I'll mention it," Hannah stated as she started walking again towards Snape's quarters.

Hannah and Adrian reached the potions classroom later that afternoon following a miserable lesson with Umbridge.
"Today," Snape started as he walked between the desks, glaring at the Gryffindors. "You will be brewing Veritaserum." Snape waved his wand at the blackboard, causing instructions to form. "As you may know, this potion can make anyone spill their deepest and darkest secrets. Anyone who isn't skilled in occlumency, that is." Hannah noticed Snape resist the urge to look in her direction. "As such, it is a controlled substance that should not be used carelessly." Snape looked dangerously at the Weasley twins before making his way to the front of the class. "Once you have finished, store your concoction to allow the potion to mature." Hannah gathered the ingredients for both herself and Adrian and placed them in the middle of their table. The pair worked swiftly and silently on their own potions for the first half hour. Snape passed behind their table with a slight nod of approval at their concoctions as they both finished adding their jobberknoll feathers. Hannah reached for the sopophorous beans and was met with the touch of Adrian's hand. She looked up to see Adrian blushing as he moved his hands to grab the sopophorous beans. Hannah felt her insides flutter for the three whole seconds that their hands connected. What has gotten into me? She thought. She watched Adrian crush his sopophorous beans for a few seconds before her attention was drawn to her cauldron boiling over.
"Shit." She quickly moved the cauldron from the flame and frantically tried crushing her beans, but a litre of potion had already spilled. "Shit. Shit, shit." She looked apprehensively at Snape to see a scowl plastered on his face. Her insides did more flips, but the kind that felt awful.
"Perhaps, Miss Byron," Snape drawled, "you should watch your own cauldron, instead of staring at Mr Pucey." Her insides did more shitty flips as she felt Adrian looking at her to her right; a wolf whistle emitted from the direction of Fred and George that caused Hannah to whip around and fire a hex towards them. Fred yelped as he ripped his shoes off, allowing his toenails to grow extensively. The toenails grew the length of the desk before Snape intervened.
"Enough!" He scolded as he waved his wand towards Fred, causing his toenails to retract. "Weasley, leave. Your potion is a disgrace, anyway. Byron, detention." Snape glared at Hannah, who returned the glare. Adrian bottled up his potion while Hannah avoided eye contact with him.

"What on earth has gotten into you?" Snape rounded on Hannah as he piled the dirty cauldrons in the middle of the classroom for Hannah to clean. "Destroying a potion then hexing a student in class. How dare you disrespect me like that?" Hannah looked at the ground as her insides turned to stone. "Well? Anything?" Snape raised his voice.
"I'm sorry," Hannah whispered as she picked up the scrubbing brush.
"You're sorry? Really? Were you sorry when you used my own private spells to hex a student? Were you sorry when you stared at me as if you wanted nothing more than to curse me?" Hannah's insides continued to feel heavier and heavier. She had gotten emotional, and now she disappointed Snape. Adrian probably thinks she's overly sensitive, and Fred likely despises her now. And now Dani will surely hate her, if not for hexing her crush, then for inevitably becoming a death eater. Hell, Adrian will hate her for that, too. The more she thought, the more she felt horrible. For once, she missed being so miserable that she felt nothing. "Do you have any idea how much I've stuck my neck out for you? Offering you my quarters, giving you private lessons, telling you confidential information." Snape dropped the last cauldron on the floor, sending vibrations throughout the room, "saving your life!" Hannah felt her eyes sting as she kept them on the cauldron she was scrubbing.
"I know. I'm sorry. I fucked up." she whispered, "I fucked up the potion, I fucked up your class, I fucked my relationship with Fred, made things awkward with Adrian, and now I'm wasting your time." Hannah felt her voice breaking as she scrubbed the cauldron harder and harder.
"The potion is salvageable." Snape's voice softened slightly. "I just don't understand what has gotten into you. You've never ruined a potion before, you've never acted hostile towards the Weasleys, and you never react so emotionally." Hannah quickly wiped her eyes with her sleeve while trying to steady her breathing. "Talk to me."
"I just..." Hannah stopped scrubbing as she looked down into the shiny cauldron. "I don't know how to function with emotions." She pulled another cauldron towards her to distract herself from her words, "I suddenly care what people think, and it's awful." Snape waved his wand across the cauldrons, cleaning them all at once.
"Sit." Snape gestured to his desk. Hannah sat down hesitantly opposite Snape. Snape let out a long sigh. "Firstly, there's no use speculating what other people think about you. You're perfectly capable of finding out what they're really thinking. If not through legilimency, then through talking to them." Snape eyed Hannah for a moment before continuing, "Second, lashing out to protect your dignity is only going to push people away from you."
"You lash out all the time, though." Hannah met Snape's eyes briefly.
"I lash out at people who I don't care about." Snape paused for a moment as if in reflection. "Don't ruin things with Adrian just because you're too proud or scared to act on them." Hannah watched Snape's face intently.
"Did you ruin something by lashing out?" she asked hesitantly. Snape looked down and nodded faintly. "I'm sorry", Hannah whispered. The two sat in silence for a few brief moments. "For the record, I think Adrian is a thousand parsecs out of my league."
"He doesn't seem to think so." Snape shrugged. "But on that note, I think it's best if Adrian is moved back into the dormitories after tonight." Hannah sighed into her hands and nodded reluctantly. Snape eyed her burnt hand. "Why are you always injured?" He summoned a potion from the shelves, grabbed Hannah's hand, and dabbed at the burn.
"You're going to have to get used to me being more injured than this if I'm going to be a death eater." Hannah spotted a slight frown on Snape's face.
