The State Verses Derek Morgan Ch 29
Mia was by his side in a second, she said, "it's okay Derek, you're okay", he shook his head and as the tears fell he said, "I'll never be okay again Mia, not ever, not without my baby girl, not without my Penelope". Mia put her hand on his and said, "we will get justice for her and for you, I promise", he shook his head and said, "don't make promises that you can't keep Mia", she said, "how about this, how about I promise that we'll do everything that we can to get justice".
Derek nodded his head and said, "I know you are but what if, what if I did do this to her, what if I hurt her like that then killed her?", Mia shook her head and said, "you didn't, you were drugged "Derek, you were drugged". Derek said, "why am I having these flashes of memories, memories of my hitting her in the face, hitting her on the back of the head, raping her over and over before finally breaking her neck by strangling her".
Mia said, "this is what I think Derek", he laid there looking up at her with tear filled eyes as she said, "I think you were drugged, well we know that part, I think that after you were heavily drugged that they planted memories into your subconscious". He looked at her as she said, "you were injected four times Derek, four and pumped full of drugs that would make you easily susceptible to suggestions so it would have been oh so easy to put those memories into your mind for you to remember later".
Derek said, "is that really what you think?", she nodded her head and said, "it is Derek, that's what I believe really happened but proving that, nowww that's going to be the hard part, especially without any witnesses". Derek sighed and said, "so that's why you are looking into the lead that Reid and Shane told you about?", she said, "exactly, because we believe it was the twins that put all of this together and if we're right that means that they are responsible for Penelope's murder, not you".
Derek said, "ohhhhh how I want to believe that Mia", she said, "until we are shown otherwise, please, please believe it", he said, "okay, I, I, I'll try", she said, "that's all I ask Derek, that's all I ask". Derek looked around the room and said, "where is everybody?", she looked at him and said, "they went home to get ready for Penelope's viewing", his heart sank, he laid there shaking his head, I can't even go see her for what will be the last time".
Mia said, "even if you weren't in here you still wouldn't be able to go, that wouldn't have be permitted, not with you being charged with her murder", Derek said, "I know, I know, it's just, it hurts Mia, this is killing me, me trying to live a life that my baby girl can't, it's wrong, I don't deserve it and it's killing me by degrees", her heart broke for Derek, she could tell the toll this was taking on him and right now, without any proof she was helpless.
Derek reached up with his free hand and wiped away the tears, he looked at Mia and said, "I've turned into such a crybaby", she shook her head and said, "no you haven't, you're mourning Penelope, you're mourning the love of your life, so of course you're going to cry and that's what you need to do, you need to mourn her loss, she was the most important person in your life, in your heart and now, well now she's gone, so you do what you have to do but mourn her Derek, mourn her".
He laid his head down on the pillow and allowed more tears to fall, he said, "can I tell you about the first time I met her?", Mia sat back in her chair and smiled as she said, "of course, I would love to hear it". Then for the next little while Derek told her of their first meeting and how he'd fallen in love with her that day, he then told of how she was always there for him, always his guiding light out of the darkness.
She had listened until he wore himself out talking and drifted back off to sleep, as she sat there watching him she whispered, "I hope that talking about how much you loved her, how important she was to you, I hope that helped you Derek, I truly, truly do". She then felt her phone vibrating in her pocket, she saw that it was from the police station so she got up and walked across the room so as to not wake Derek up.
She put the phone to her ear and said, "yes, what did you find out?", the voice on the other end said, "we only found the cousin on the premises, he agreed to let us search and we found nothing, I'm so sorry". Mia said, "thank you for checking the lead out", the officer said, "of course Mia" and before the call ended he said, "just for the record I don't think that Derek killed her either, I think he's being framed".
Mia said, "thank you", he said, "you're welcome and if their is anything else I can help you with, just call and ask to speak to Gerald Fitzgerald and I'll do all that I can to help you", she said, "thanks Gerald, I might take you up on that", a few seconds later the call ended and she was left thinking and wondering where exactly the twins were.
