A view to a Skrill
Hiccups POV:
It has been five weeks since the screaming death had first come to my island and quite a bit has happened in my life. For starters the screaming death and his whispering death siblings now each had names which allowed training them to go a bit smoother since now I could call a specific one at any time. The screaming death was given the name Quake due to his ability to create earthquakes while the three whispering deaths got the names Shake, Break and Grinder for their abilities. As for their relationships with the other occupants of the island Diggs as far as I could tell had become a father figure to them since he was an adult of their species. With him around they all got along pretty well with the other dragons and seemed to be pretty calm with my animals after I talked to them with Diggs being there to help drill in the message. As for my relationship with them I had the whispering deaths fully trained after a long tooth brushing for each of them but they were still learning the drills. As for Quake it took a while for him to adjust to the training but after a week of training and bonding I was finally able to gain his loyalty. Besides that, with the new dragons I had to do a whole lot of construction to my dragon stables to house my new whispering deaths.
As for housing Quake I knew from the dragon eye and Borks notes that he'd only grow larger a bigger so it wouldn't make much sense to house him with my other dragons if he'd be able to destroy the stable when he was just trying to leave. It is for these reasons I built a new marble building for Quake to nest in. The entire building was built out of marble with one large room and a large door. The inside was a large empty room with a flat floor, which gave the appearance of a large empty room except at the back where there was a large stone pit in the floor that Quake nested in and in the middle of this room was a large pit lined with marble which lead to Quakes main tunnels around the island. Quakes new abodes weren't the only new construction additions I had made to my island nor were him and his siblings the only new additions to my group.
Another addition to my dragons was one of the most feared dragons known as the flightmare who only appears once every ten years when the sky lights up with Avondale's fire. My dad had tasked me with dealing with the flightmare a week before it was meant to come and even offered to pay me for my services. I just told him if I was able to train the flightmare then that would be payment enough. I did have to deal with an angry Astrid threatening me with her axe claiming she wanted the flightmares head for ruining her family's name. This was not an easy thing to deal with since whenever I walked through the village she'd stop me to try and convince me to take her with me on my attack on the flightmare which resulted in me needing to continuously turn her down.
It when she cut me off by throwing her axe in front of my head that I decided to talk her parents into restraining her to get her to stop trying to get me to take her with me when I went after the flightmare. In the days leading up to Avondale's I studied everything we knew about the flightmare including the route it always took which was what would lead me to capturing and training it. I realized the flightmare always followed the stream from the northern swamp into the village, which brought up the question of what was the big deal about that stream. My question was answered the night before Avondale's arrived when I went to investigate the route hoping to find an answer.
I found this answer in the form of glowing algae that was filling the stream. It was as I studied it I came to realize the flightmare depended on the algae as a food source and attacked the village since it saw us as a threat to its very survival. I also learnt that the algae gave the flightmare its ghostly glow after Toothless chowed down on the stuff and began glowing himself. After figuring all this out it was all a matter of simply building a new channel for the algae to go down but before opening it up I had Coal spit up lava to make small walls which would lead the algae to a newly built cave on my island which had a large pit in the middle to hold the algae and a back entrance for me to enter with a cage door. Once the flightmare was in all I had to do was pull a lever dropping the cage door to the entrance trapping the dragon in the cave with its food source. The next night when my plan was put into action my entire plan went off without a hitch and the flightmare was caught in the trap with no problems. The village threw a celebration in my honor for capturing the flightmare and I admit I did enjoy the praise but the toughest part was dealing with Astrid who wanted me to hand the flightmare over for execution to regain the respect of her family name. It took me telling her that I still needed to study it and felt there was more to what happened to her Uncle Finn then meets the eye but in order to figure it out I needed the flightmare alive.
I was proven correct when I learnt that the flightmare sprayed some type of toxin on people leaving them paralyzed long enough for it to strike and it was after learning this the training really began. It took a week of me just sitting outside the cage door quietly not talking or moving to show that I wasn't a threat. When I established myself as no threat I walked into the cage and sat down in front of it not moving as he moved around me studying me and when I was able to show it I truly wasn't a threat I was able to train him and give him the name Specter because of his ghostly glow. He turned the cave with the algae into his den. As for the jobs I've been able to train him to do there is nighttime patrol to spook anyone back to their ships, which, he's done multiple times with Snotlout and the twins, and supplying me with his paralyzing spray. Using a mixture of his spray and Speedy's venom I was able to build small bombs, which have small pins which when pulled out set the bombs off after a few seconds. When they go off the spray out flightmare mist mixed with speed stinger venom that covers a small area in a mist which paralyzes anyone it touches for a maximum of six hours or a minimum of three. (AN: Think of smoke bombs with a paralyzing gas.) I knew they had this affected people since when I was in the village Snotlout took one off my belt and brought it over to the twins before he accidently set it off leaving both him and the twins completely paralyzed. I left them like this since I felt it was a just punishment for trying to take something off my armor.
There was of course the reaction of the village when I first brought Specter to them. Most ran into their huts in fear while others readied their weapons or in Astrids case charged straight towards him with her axe raised. This resulted in Specter blasting her with his mist leaving her paralyzed in front of everyone. While she was paralyzed I told everyone that this is what happened to Finn Hofferson and how he didn't freeze in fear but was paralyzed by Specters mist. Long story short the Hoffersons were grateful to me for both clearing their family name and redeeming Fearless Finn Hofferson.
Presently I was flying on Toothless with Scaulder and Sapphire out on the open ocean. The reason I was out here with some of my dragons was that Bucket and Mulch were out on their regular fishing routes but are two days late and my dad asked me to go and find them. Now normally it would just be Toothless and I searching for missing ships but I wanted to find them quickly since they were two of the only villagers who actually gave me the luxury of kindness for most of my life in the village. It was for this reason that I wanted to find them as fast as possible since if they're in trouble I wanted to get them back to Berk as fast as I can if they needed medical attention. I was brought out of my thoughts by Toothless' growl and using his head to point to two ships docked at a glacier. I recognized one as Bucket and Mulch's ship while I recognized the other as a Berserker ship from the seal on the sail. I saw the Berserkers on the ship were pointing crossbows at Bucket and Mulch.
I signaled Sapphire to fly in low and get rid of the archers with a few well placed spines which she was all too happy to do before me and Toothless came in low and fast blasting the gang plank bridging the two ships together. I then signaled Scaulder to get the Berserker ship away from the fishing boat. He did so by diving underneath it then rising out of the water underneath the side that was facing the other ship. After that I heard the ships captain yelling at his men to retreat which from what I could tell his men were all too happy to do. Once they were a good distance a way I had Toothless take us in for a landing and asked Mulch.
"Are you both alright?"
"We're fine Hiccup thanks to you and your dragons!"
"What happened?"
"We were on our regular fishing trip when we saw a Berserker ship here on the glacier." He shrugged. "We thought they were stuck so we came to see if they needed help."
"Why did they attack you then?"
"We got too close and saw 'it'." I cocked an eyebrow in confusion.
"And what exactly is 'it'?" He then led me onto the glacier towards a wall of ice and gestured with his hook.
"It!" I looked into the ice and saw a dragon, which looked familiar somehow before I walked up and rubbed off some of the frost to get a better look. "Any ideas why the Berserkers would want it?" I turned to him.
"I'm not sure what type of dragon it is since there's too much ice but if the Berserkers want it then it can't be good."
"Are you going to cut it out and take it back to your island?"
"I will be taking it back to my island but I won't be the one doing the cutting."
I smiled at Sapphire who was playing with Toothless by waving her tail around for him to try and pounce on. I whistled getting her attention and five minutes later her and Toothless were helping carry the dragon in a large block of ice while Scaulder pulled Bucket and Mulch's ship back to Berk.
Half an hour later
When we got back to the island I sent Ikan to Berk with a message to my father telling him what happened and telling him to send Ikan back with a message to tell me when Bucket and Mulch got back. As for the frozen dragon I had Toothless and Sapphire put the frozen dragon down in a small field in my forest where I normally spent some of my days playing with my wolves. I began rubbing off the frost from around the outer layer of ice so I could get a better look but once I finished I still couldn't tell what species of dragon was in the ice so I signaled Coal to use a small lava blast to melt off some of the ice. Once that was done I was able to figure out what species of dragon it was and when I did I knew why it looked so familiar and why I felt like I had been through this before. Trapped inside was none other than a skrill but this one had a unique pattern on its hide, was a lighter shade of purple than Lightning and I was easily able to figure out that unlike Lightning this one was female. I got the feeling Lightning was going to want to know about this since his species was rare and since this one was female he might be able to find a mate in her. I intended to introduce the two of them when I first thaw her out since it might make things a little easier for her with a member of her own species present.
I absentmindedly rubbed the heads of Snowbells and Rascal who had walked up next to me and were both staring at the big block of ice. They always were the most curious of the pups but then again, they weren't really pups anymore since they reached my waist in size and would need to go and find mates of their own soon with their siblings and cousins. I just hoped they remembered old grandpa Hiccup when he came to check up on them. I was brought out of my thoughts by Ikan flying down in front of me before turning to show me his back where he had that little container to hold messages. He only did this when he was presenting me with a message so I opened up the container that held a letter from my father. He wanted me to bring the frozen dragon to the village so they could get a better understanding as to why the Berserkers wanted it. I decided I should get this over and done with quickly so I can thaw out the skrill and begin training it. I mounted Toothless and Sapphire before we took off with the frozen skrill to the village square.
Once we were there I had Toothless and Sapphire put the skrill down in the middle of the town square where Gothi was waiting for me. When we landed she scribbled on the ground telling me that my father was in the great hall waiting for me while also dealing with the council. I thanked her before making my way to the great hall before stopping and turning back to Gothi as I said.
"Make sure Snotlout and the twins don't get near that frozen dragon!" She just nodded before I continued on my way to the great hall.
When I arrived in the great hall I found my father trying to calm down multiple angry Viking men wanting to attack the Berserkers claiming their attack was an act of war. I walked up to the table but they all ignored me in favor of yelling at each other. Seeing they were too busy yelling at each other to even notice me I signaled Toothless and Sapphire to roar so I could get their attention which I am glad to say it did since all eyes were on us now as I walked forward and said.
"Well I know why the Berserkers wanted that dragon so badly." Bucket then started shivering and smiling.
"We found a dragon?" He turned to Mulch. "Can we keep it Mulch? I've always wanted a dragon."
"It's a skrill!" They all turned to me.
"Oh I don't want one of those."
"I can understand why since they can be pretty hard to deal with and trust me when I say they can have a temper." Gobber then asked.
"Well why don't we just give that dragon to the Berserkers?" He shrugged. "It's just a frozen dragon carcass." I looked at him.
"Gobber a skrill is able to stay safe in ice for decade due to their internal body temperature."
"So that thing is still alive?"
"Most likely!" My dad stepped forward.
"How do you know it will still be alright if it's thawed out?" I smiled at him.
"Dad how do you think I found my first skrill?"
"You found that dragon of yours trapped in ice and thawed it out?"
"Yeah but he still has a bit of a temper." I shrugged. "Now let's focus on why the Berserkers want it so badly besides the fact that it's their symbol." I looked around at the men. "Anyone have any ideas?" My dad sighed and rubbed his temples.
"When I was a lad my fathers father used to sit me on his knee and tell me tales but I thought they were just tales."
"Tales about what?"
"About Berserker fleets attacking behind harnessed dragons that brought down lightning from the sky and destroyed everything in their path."
"So that's why they want the skrill." Gobber walked up.
"Lad you don't believe those old tales do you?"
"Gobber after everything I've been through if there's one thing I've learnt it's that anything is possible." My father then looked down at me.
"Hiccup we need to get rid of that dragon!" He made his way to the door. "It's just the excuse Dagur needs to go to war with us."
"Yeah but if he manages to get his hands on it then he'll have a powerful dragon under his control which will allow him to destroy Berk easily."
"We'll discuss this later." He rubbed his temples. "Where did you leave the skrill?"
"In town center with Gothi."
"Let me see if I understand this? You left a frozen dragon in the middle of town for everyone to see with only an old woman to guard it?"
"Yeah I guess that wasn't my best idea."
It was at that moment there was an explosion outside before we all ran out to investigate it. When we made it outside we saw smoke coming from the center of town where I left the skrill. After the explosion it wasn't long before an all too familiar roar echoed through the village. It was then we saw the outline of a large dragon flying out of the village, which we took as our queue to go and investigate what happened. When we arrived in the village center we found small chunks of ice littering the floor, the ground scorched with lightning marks and the teens standing in the middle of it all. We walked up to them as I asked through clenched teeth.
"What happened here?" Tuffnut answered.
"Well we were just taking a walk when all of a sudden this dragon snuck up on us." Ruffnut then said.
"Yeah! Sneaky dragon!" I just glared at them as I reached for a flightmare bomb.
"That dragon was completely frozen in ice and couldn't escape without outside interference." I held up the bomb. "Now somebody better tell me the truth or you lot will find yourselves paralyzed for up to six hours." Fishleggs then stepped forward.
"Well we saw you drop off the dragon in the middle of town and well I was curious to know what species it was while Snotlout wanted to free it to prove he could be a better dragon rider than you if he had his own dragon." He began twiddling his fingers. "Astrid wanted her own dragon so she could get to your island to slay your flightmare for what it did to her uncle and the twins just wanted their own dragon to blow things up."
"And how did you lot get the dragon out of the ice?" Tuffnut answered.
"Well we used some of this exploding black powder we got from trader Johan." I nodded
"Did Gothi try to tell you not to?"
"Well yeah but we just told her that Gobber was making his yak noodle stew for everyone and if she wanted some then she better hurry down to the forge." I held up the bomb.
"If that's the case I will leave your punishment up to my father for endangering the village and deceiving the elder but you'll receive your punishment after you unfreeze from the bomb as punishment from me for messing with one of my dragons." I then pulled the pin and tossed it at the teens before it went off leaving them paralyzed for the time being. I turned to my father. "When they unfreeze give them the worst punishment you can think of." He nodded.
"And where are you going?"
"To check out the sheep farms around Berk."
"Why?"
"Sheep are a skrills main diet."
He just nodded before we took off after sending Sapphire back to the island to get Lightning since he might be able to talk to this new skrill. It didn't take Toothless and I long to find the skrill since after we found out it attacked silent Sven's farm it was just a matter of following the lightning. Unfortunately Sapphire and Lightning hadn't arrived yet leaving us to face the skrill alone which brings us to where we are now. Toothless and me were currently up in the clouds doing our best to avoid being hit by the skrills lightning which was not an easy task. As we dodged another blast I went over everything I know about the Skrill when it hit me. Skrills can't use their attacks when in water so if we could drive the skrill into the water we might stand a chance. Knowing this I said.
"Bud we need to drive her into the water and we might stand a chance."
He growled in understanding before flying up into the sky before going into a nosedive firing plasma blasts near the skrill to drive it down. I'm glad to say it was working well until we had to dodge a flaming arrow followed by a large boulder. I looked in the direction they came from and saw three Berserker ships with Dagur on the lead ship. Unfortunately this gave the skrill the opportunity to flee back into the clouds. I saw Dagur smiling up at me as he yelled.
"SURPRISE HICCUP!" He then let out his laugh before he continued with. "NOW KEEP YOUR DAINTY LITTLE HANDS OFF MY SKRILL!"
When he finished his men readied their catapults and archers before firing at us. Toothless was able to blast the boulder that was coming at us into rubble but the arrows were too close for us to dodge. Before they could reach us though a hot white flame cut them off and incinerated them. I looked to where the shot came from and saw Sapphire coming in which meant Lightning couldn't be far behind. I knew I couldn't let Dagur find out about Lightning yet since it would only mean big trouble and turn me into a bigger target for him. I signaled Sapphire to head back as we turned around to regroup which she understood. Along the way we picked up Lightning who seemed confused by what was going on. We landed on a distant sea stack where I caught them up on everything. When I finished I looked at Lightning and said.
"You need head back to the island pal." He growled in what I assume was defiance so I put a hand on his head making my hair stand up. "Listen I know you want to help both me and that new skrill but we can't risk Dagur capturing you or knowing about you yet." He looked down as I scratched the back of his neck in a place I knew he loved. "There now don't worry we'll get that other skrill back to the island safely and unharmed but until then head back to the island and wait for us." He just looked up at me sadly before he gave a hesitant nod and flew off in the direction of the island as I turned back to Toothless and Sapphire. "Okay now Sapphire I'm going to need you to buy us some time by cutting up the sails on the Berserker ships and as soon as you're done get out of there since I don't want to risk you getting hurt." She gave a growl and nod before I turned to Toothless. "Bud while she does this we'll be dealing with the skrill with the same plan of getting it into the water where we can handle it." He growled before I mounted him and we took off.
It didn't take long to find the skrill and Dagurs fleet again allowing us to put the plan into action. I signaled Sapphire to retreat back to the island for the time being which she quickly did but only after she sent a few of her spines down at the Berserkers. I smiled back at her as me and Toothless followed the lightning that would lead us to the skrill. When we caught up with it the skrill immediately began firing lightning at us that we were barely able to dodge. Eventually Toothless fired a plasma blast at the skrill as it let loose another lightning shot at us and when the shots collided there was a huge shockwave knocking us and the skrill back. When we landed from the blast I saw we were on the head Berserker ship with Dagur on the ground in front of us. Seeing him Toothless growled as I smiled and said.
"Sorry about your deck."
We then took off as fast as we could before we began looking for the skrill but it was nowhere to be found. We kept up the search for another hour and after we still came up with nothing we flew back to the island so we could use my golden falcons to find it. When we got back Lightning was waiting for us and when he saw we didn't have the skrill with us he was not happy. It was easy to tell by the lightning running across his skin, which only happened when he was agitated. I had to bring out some dragon nip to calm him down enough to listen to me about what happened. When I finished he understood before I went to use my golden falcons to find the skrill. Once I did I was not happy with where it was as it was now in the clutches of Alvin the treacherous and the Outcasts who had just met with Dagur to what I assume was discuss using the skrill to destroy Berk. I knew I had to get the skrill out of there before they could use it against Berk and this time I knew I wouldn't be able to keep Lightning away. I just hoped they weren't able to capture him and use him against us since the last thing I wanted was to hurt one of my own dragons. I walked out of my private study and out of my lair looking down the stairs at Toothless and Lightning who were waiting for me. I smiled at them and said.
"Let's go save a skrill guys!" They both growled before I mounted Toothless and we took off.
3 hours later
I just saw Dagur kill Alvin using the skrill he stole from the Outcasts by harnessing it and forcing it to fire its lightning into the water where Alvin had just jumped into in order to try and avoid the skrills lightning attacks on the ship. This was not good in the least since it meant Dagur could now take leadership of the Outcasts and add their forces to his armada, which was already incredibly strong. I knew the only thing I could do right now was get the skrill out of Dagurs control before warning my father as to what's happened. I had Toothless fly me away from the cliff overlooking the docks to where Lightning was waiting for us so we could come up with a plan. I knew I needed to get Dagur to release the ropes that allowed him to control the skrill using the harness around it. I figured it be best if we first lured Dagur away from the armada before taking care of him somehow and call Lightning to try and calm the skrill. Toothless and me flew back to where the fleet was where Dagur was talking about how he couldn't wait to take his skrill to battle me and Toothless. When he finished I had Toothless hover in front of the fleet as I yelled out to him.
"WHY WAIT THEN?!" He turned to face me. "I FIGURED WE COULD SETTLE THIS LIKE REAL VIKINGS! JUST YOU AND ME!" Savage tried to talk him out of it but he just pushed him down and ran to the ropes that held the skrill.
"Me and my Skrill against you and your nightfury?" He chuckled. "I like those odds."
He then pulled the ropes making the skrill face us and let loose a stream of lightning which we dodged before flying above the cliff side. It didn't take long for Dagur to follow us using the skrill to fly him up to the edge before launching another strike at us. I had Toothless turn away and fly us away from them to try and get Dagur away from his armada as we dodged the skrills blasts. It was then at that moment I remembered a time when I was training Lightning using the same kind of harness Dagur was using only to be shocked when I stood in water since the lightning travelled down the ropes. I knew if I could get Dagur to stand in some puddles before having Toothless fire a plasma blast at the skrill just as it fires to cause a shockwave like before then Dagur would be down for the count. It was then I saw a small valley ahead and when I looked down I saw a small puddle on one side and knew this would be the perfect spot to take Dagur out. We flew to the other side and landed on the edge of the cliff before Dagur caught up to us. I had Toothless hit the skrill with a plasma blast only for it to use the lightning in its body to block it like Lightning often did in training. It was then Dagur began his taunts before he asked if I had any last words to which I replied.
"No I'm good!" I looked down at Toothless. "How about you bud?"
He just crooned as I watched Dagur step forward into the water making me smile before the skrill fired another stream at lightning at us but just as it let loose the stream Toothless fired a plasma blast intercepting it and making a shockwave. I smiled as I watched the lightning travel down the ropes into Dagurs hands before he immediately began to scream before falling down into the valley. I knew he wasn't going to be causing any trouble anytime soon. I then ducked before another stream of lightning could hit me and was reminded about the now free skrill who wasn't happy with us for attacking her. I knew that the first thing we needed to do was that we needed to get her away from here before the Berserkers and Outcasts came and had the chance to recapture her. We took off into the sky with her coming after us with speed that almost matched Toothless and it didn't help that we constantly needed to dodge her lightning blasts. It was when we were on the far side of the island flying through sea stacks that I knew it was the right time to put an end to this and call in the heavy hitter so without hesitation I yelled out.
"LIGHTNING!"
It wasn't a minute later when I heard the familiar roar of my skrill from above which I'm glad to say was followed by lightning flying down in front of the female skrill. I turned to face them and saw the female stop and just stare at Lightning with wide eyes for a few seconds before Lightning let out a loud roar which I assume was him ordering her to land since they both went down and landed on a sea stack. Toothless and me stayed up in the air and watched them as they slowly circled each other before letting the lightning flow around their bodies and onto each other. I had read about this in Borks notes knowing this was their mating ritual in which they let each others lightning flow into each other to see if they were worthy of each other and if they were meant to be together. They circled around each other before leaning into each other and began sniffing their necks. They then pulled back before flying up into the sky but as they did Lightning gave me look that told me to go back to the island. I knew it was best to listen to him since angering a dragon was a bad idea but angering a skrill was basically suicide. I nodded to him before we began our flight back to the island but as we did I saw the harness Dagur used on the skrill floating in the water and had Toothless collect it as a trophy from this battle. As we flew I looked back at the place in the sky where Lightning had disappeared to with that other skrill wondering when he'd be back. I just hoped he'd come home because like all my dragons he holds a special place in my heart and it would be difficult to let him go and possibly never see him again but I knew that if you loved something set it free and I guess this was one of those moments.
1 week later
It's been a week since Lightning left with that female and I can't deny that I do miss him and am worried something may have happened to him like Dagur possibly capturing him but I knew I was just being paranoid. Not much has changed in the week that's past besides me hanging up the harness Dagur used on the skrill in the trophy room and my dad increasing berks defenses with more catapults, doubling the guard, having Gobber work overtime at the forge making weapons and of course trying to convince me to build Berk new siege weapons and allowing Berk access to both my island and my armory. I of course once again turned him down telling him how the gronkle iron I supply Berk with is more than enough to help defend Berk. Then there's the teens who are still enduring their punishment of scooping out the yak stables for releasing the skrill and causing so much trouble. Watching them shovel that manure with such disgusted faces helped take my mind off things.
Right now I was swimming in the ocean with Kal swimming around me and splashing me with water while I laughed. It was things like this that helped me relax and just forget about my worries at least until I had to deal with them. I gave Kal a rub on the head before I got out of the pool and picked up my towel resting on top of my regular armor and began drying myself off before getting my armor back on. Once I finished getting my armor back on I gave Kal one more smile before watching him swim around the water letting out happy noises. It was then I heard a familiar roar I had wanted to hear for the past week. I looked up and saw both Lightning and the female skrill flying towards the beach. I nearly jumped for joy seeing Lightning again but I restrained the urge however when he landed I couldn't resist the urge to run up to him and hug his head and saying.
"I missed you pal."
He just growled and nuzzled my chest before I felt hot breath on the back of my neck that was standing up due to being so close to a skrill. I turned around and found the female skrill looking at me with her head tilted to the side. I saw her pupils weren't narrowed like they were when she first started looking at me after she was thawed out. I knew this was a sign that she was now willing to give me a chance. I smiled before I closed my eyes, turning my head away and holding out my hand to try and make a bond with her. I heard who I assumed was Lightning give an encouraging croon before I felt warmth under my palm. I looked up and saw her muzzle against my hand and smiled at her before giving a gentle scratch making her let out a growl of pleasure. I turned to Lightning and said.
"I take it things went well between you two?" He just growled as I chuckled and turned back to the skrill. "Now what should we name a beauty with such power like you?"
