Chapter 11 "Bad omen"
Part 3 The world in flames
In the last two months things were going great. Too great somebody can say. Up until now nine angels have been defeated and yet with each one defeat the question came up on Ritsuko's head 'How Shinji Ikari knew the weak point of most the angels and how did he managed to score such high sync rate earlier on?' . For Asuka there wasn't really a question, she had already a history of training, something that the third child did not. Another thing which always bothering Ritsuko was the fact that he usually ask stuff which are even highly classified are not really bother the average 14 year old kid.
The only conclusion is that he is a spy. In way it makes sense. He probably has emense hate for his father,so it is a possibility that a secret organisation might have recruited him to keep an eye on his father. That explains why he knows so much, but that doesn't answer the next question. 'What is he main goal?'. Does, he want to bring the third impact? Does he want to kill his father?
Questions, questions and not a clear answer. I need to take a break now or I will lose it. Ritsuko thought and decided to go to the cafeteria.
As she headed there, she spotted something on the computer. It was small at first but it looked bigger and bigger as it was coming towards them.
"Maya, quick give me information about this thing."
"Hai, senpai. It looks like a flying object is coming towards here."
" I am reading pattern blue here it is angel." Said one of the other technicians.
"Alright sound the alarms." Commanded Ritsuko.
Rei Ayanami isn't someone who often sleeps but that because she sees no reason in sleeping. People often use sleeping as way to relax themselves and dream about things which they can't do in real life. But Rei Ayanami isn't one of those people. She someone who is created to follow and obey the order of her creator. That is her purpose. That will always be her purpose.
But this time she didn't sleep for that, she didn't sleep because she couldn't get out of her head the evil which will soon come. The evil which will be spooned by the likes of those two. They will be the reason why this world will be doomed and they still haven't figured out.
Oh come on, don't think this too much. Soon his return will mark the beginning of a new age of our kind and everything will be put back in the place which it should have been originally. The voices of Lilith came up in her head.
"I won't allow it, the Commander's plans will be finished before he arrives."
You still follow orders like a god damm doll. You should had listened to him back then. You would have at least been in a more interesting side compare to the one you are now.
Rei mind traveled to two months when she had that conversation.
(Two months ago:
After they have left the public bath she decided followed them around. She kept a fair distance from them so she wouldn't get spotted. She was very curious what they will do now. She had heard them arguing that day at the pool and wanted to see what will happen if they reveal their true identity.
After a bit of a walking they stopped for a moment. For what looked,it seems that the second child said something impact to make the third stopped. They started talking with each other. If her guesses were correct, he must have also find out her true identity.
She was surprised when she find out that she was able to come here. Lilith said that this possibility was close to zero and she was right, unless their arrival wasn't a coincidence. Which all facts indicate that. She has made some wild guesses of whom is pulling the strings but she isn't completely sure. Only Lilith truly knows but she keeping that to her self.
She then saw them hugging and kissing each other, something which she didn't expect it at all. She expected to kill each other or something worse but it seems that oppositely due attached with each other. But then again, with what they have done to themselves and what they are, they aren't really all that different.
So she decided to approach them and the moment she was spotted the two of them break up.
"Am I interrupting something?" She said sarcastically as she didn't know what was happening.
"No, not at all." Said Shinji.
"God damnit wonder girl, you come in the worst time possible." Said Asuka.
" You two really are disgusting. You only have forgive eachother but are really very far of forgiving yourselves. You just using eachother to ease the pain for now.You still haven't move on from your mistakes."
They both looked away from each other in shame.
"And so what? What's the problem of easing someone pain." Retorted Asuka.
"It means you two use each other as a defence mechanism instead of being true to eachother."
"That's something which we will figure out ourselves, Rei." Said angrily Shinji.
"What are you here anyways wonder girl don't you have something else to do?"
"I am here to warn you. From now you should stay away from each other because your arrival might be the reason why this world will be doomed. That is, if you even care about this world."
"Where are you getting at Rei ? "
"Someone have sent you here for a reason and it is not for a good reason. If someone has that kind of power to send other people at different worlds that means something more sinister is being planned here."
"Does she know who that someone is?"
Asked Shinji.
"Who is she?"
"It's big story I will explain to you later."
"She probably knows by now but she hasn't revealed anything yet."
"And how exactly can we stop this guy if we don't know who it is?" Asked Asuka again.
"I recommend that you stay away each other but that's my opinion on this topic. You are free to choose whatever you like but if we cross our paths, I won't hesitate stopping you." As she said that Rei leave them.
"Rei wait ." Said Shinji but she was far gone to hear.
The two of them looked each other with wonder.)
It is been two months and yet it feels like yesterday.
Despite having warned them, they still are together every morning since then. What is more annoying is the fact the started making everywhere. Sometimes they doing it in the change rooms, other times they don't come to school for a whole week. These two are just wild animals with no clear goal for the future.
Rei the saw the notification for the upcoming angel and prepared to go outside.
"I won't allow them to bring him to this world. Today will be the day which I will finish them of." And with that she exited her apartment.
Shinji woke up early in the morning and decided to make breakfast for him and Asuka. But there was something that bothers him, for once in his life he feels peace inside of him but even though Asuka is now a part of his life he still feels a bit shallow inside.
But why thought? When normal people enter a relationship they usually feel happiness and warm. Me and Asuka make love with each other every day and I still think that something is still missing. Like the final piece of a puzzle. I don't know if she feels the same. A part of me believes that it does. In a way I can see in her face every time finished having sex. She usually looks away like being ashamed of something. I can't blame her . I feel the same way from time to time. I don't deserve her . She is to good for me despite her flaws. I kinda started to understand what Misato and Kaji felt that time. This is escapism in a way.
After fishing breakfast Shinji went to their room to wake Asuka. After all they will probably have school today. To be fair, he had started losing track of what day or time is it. The past two months he was living the moment and nothing else. Everything else looked pointless when he was with Asuka.
He was conflicted. He didn't know what do. Every choice looked like it was the wrong one. At one hand he wanted to be with Asuka and help her but on the other hand he still fears that he will hurt her one way or the other. Also he couldn't forget about the warning which Rei said. Who send them here and why? That question still ringing on Shinji's head. His whole objective at first was that but after finding Asuka those questions become meaningless to him.
As Shinji was lost on his thoughts Asuka awoke.
" Morning Baka." She said as she opened her eyes slowly.
"Good morning Asuka. I hope you slept well. I made breakfast for two of us."
"You are working yourself to hard Shinji, you should take a break once in a while and let me do the chores."
"And make a food like you did last time? No way."
"Hey, I just forgot it for 2 minutes and it wasn't the much burn out." She said that as she hit him a little and took a bite from the toasts he had made.
"I felt like I was eating burning coal that day."
"It was just my first time of cooking alright."
"Alright, alright I will pass on that but you won't do the washing up ever again. I don't all my shirts to shrink in one day."
"Okay I am sorry about that one but I will buy you new shirts if you want."
"I am fine for the time being but thanks."
They decided to stop talking and focus on the eating but they got a sudden call from Nerv.
The they will fight now was not other than Leliel . It was floating above the city and covered a huge part of the city with its massive shadow. Of course the three children knew that the real angel was inside the massive white black ball and they were prepared for it.
In this operation Shinji was chosen as lead . A choice which nobody disagree since most of the believe he was really person for the job.
"The enemy has move yet. Rei what's your status?" Said Shinji as he was checking his position.
"I have taken my position. It looks like the angel is waiting for our moves."
"Copy that. Asuka how things going up there?"
"They could have been better since there is no action from angel but I am all good here." Answered Asuka as she was climbing one of the buildings and reached its top.
" Alright team, you must take now careful measures because we still don't know how this angel will function."
"Hai."
Each pilot was ready to react at any moment. If the angel attack one of them the others will fire immediately. Maybe in this way they find an unexplored weakness with in the angel.
Instead of moving the massive ball started spinning in itself and accelerate speed. It's spun so hard that it disappeared from the naked eye.
"I have lost contact with the angel. What's your status?"
"I have lost it too" Said Rei.
"I can't find it too. Wait I see something. What is it doing?"
"Asuka wait I am coming to you don't come closer to it. " Shinji said as he also started climbing one of the buildings and saw what was happening.
The angel had shifted it's tactic to cover the ground and instead was pulling things from the sky like a vacuum cleaner.
Asuka grabbed the roof of building and hold on it with her life. Shinji tried to come closer to her but he was started to be pulled out. Shinji run as fast as he could and after some challenge he managed to arrive in Asuka's place.
When he arrived Asuka was already about to be sucked off but Shinji catch her the last minute.
"Hold on there."
"Ahhh. I am really are thankful that you are here Shinji. I didn't know what could have done without you."
"You don't need to thank me I am just making up for my mistakes."
" Self hated as always." Joked Asuka but she knew that deep she to feels the same way for herself.
Shinji tried to hold as strong as he could but he was a moment to be sucked off.
"Rei come here we need your help."
But the answer he got wasn't the one he expected. Instead of a helping hand or a reason why she can't come closer, he saw a beem being fired in his way. Ironically enough it was from the same weapon he had used to combat Ramiel, but this time Rei was the firing him.
A big confusion was formed in his face but as he was sucked off he remembered Rei's words :" I won't hesitate stopping you." Will have a big talk after this, Rei remember that. Thought Shinji angrily and prepared for what's to come.
She awaken in a snowy forest not to different from the one that she was trained on. She was alone, with nobody to talk to.
"SHINJI, SHINJI, WHERE ARE YOU?" She yelled but receive no response.
She walked through the forest in search of Shinji. As she walking she saw a small figure in the distance and rushed to it.
"Hey you, have you seen a boy with a blue suit?"
The figure turned to face her.
"No, but you might refer to my doll." The figure was a direct copy of the 8year old Asuka but instead of having a small monkey, she had a doll version of Shinji.
Asuka was shocked. She didn't know what say or think of this.
"What are you carrying?"
"His name is Shinji and he will never leave me. He will always be with me no matter what happen. He is mine and mine alone."
"What ? No, Shinji isn't a doll. He is a person with thoughts and feelings ."
"Then why do you treat him like one?" The figure form a wicked smile and her rest of its face became dark.
Asuka tried to deflect that argument but a series of memories run through her head.
"Chance. Hi, I am Asuka Langley Soryu. Charmed huh? I know what you did back there.Why don't you do that again right here and now.You just using eachother to ease the pain for now."
"NO , STOP. Make it stop."
"You are the why he will never move on and have a normal life." Said the haunting figure.
" He is stronger than what he seems he will find the strength to move on. I just want him to be better than before."
" And yet you use him like your play thing to feel better."
" Yes." Said Asuka shamefully. " I know I don't deserve him but unlike me he is a great person inside it is just that he doesn't know yet. I am all evil he is not."
Another series of events run through her mind. As she remembered all the times which she had made fun at Shinji.
Asuka screamed as she was drowning in a pit of shame and sorrow. She was alone one again.
"I am sorry Shinji." She whispers crying
He was awakened in empty world not to different from the one which he was from. But that one was much more destroyed.
He saw entire buildings being destroyed as the fell down from the sky. People tried to run as fast as they could but they couldn't escape their inevitable.
He run in the opposite side of where the people going to see what was causing this and as he went he froze from what he saw.
The sky was dark red and in the middle of it he saw an amalgamation of unit 01 and 02 with four arms. On the one hand it was holding the Spear of Longinus and on the other hand what looks like the Spear of Junctionus. As he tried to look closer he saw two figures being one each solder.
" Who cause this? "
"You and the second." Said another figure but that one was oddly familiar.
Shinji turned to the figure and he was confused as never before.
"Kaworu... Tarbis how are here?"
" The 'how' isn't what is important now but what will happen if you followed this patch you are now is."
" What do mean with that? How me and Asuka can even cause this?"
" Your self hatred became so big that the two couldn't accept others knowing your true identities. Thus destroy this world to create one which you two never existed and ending up dead with only regrets in mind."
"That's... that's so far stretch. If I remember correctly the Spear of Junctionus was split by SEELE in order to sabotage Nerv, so they don't have always the upper hand. The remains were buried somewhere and they keep it as last result if they were pushed to hard by some other organisation."
" You know the secret of the world to well Shinji."
"Yeah I learned them through the hard way."
" The outcome you saw before you might look like far stretch now but this what will happen if you continue this way."
"Is there way to prevent this?"
"Yes, if give up your selfishness completely and embrace your end, that's how you can atone for your sins."
"Meaning?"
"You must cut tights with the second."
"But... but I can't leave Asuka now she needs me."
"Don't fool your self Shinji she is just pity you. She wants a man not a child that doesn't know what to do."
Those words broke Shinji heart and felt hopeless in to what to do now.
But Shinji didn't see that figure which said it was Kaworu was approaching him with dark intentions. Before he could take notice him , the figure crabbed him by the neck.
"You shady bastard." Tried to say Shinji while struggling to breathe.
"This is the moment we were waiting for Lilin. This will be the beginning of your kind's reckoning. Now, realise him from his prison."
A glowing light came out of Shinji's face and which was sucked by the figure. In a similar way not far from Shinji's place a similar story happened to Asuka.
The two different figures combined and create a massive beam that shot to the sky. Both Asuka and Shinji was shocked like never before.
Rei was watching the massive ball with curiosity. They were inside it for at least two hours, she started to rethink her actions.
Lilith had told her if they die now then he will never arrive here. Her thoughts told her to shoot them and be sucked to the angel but there is not confirm of their death,plus probably the spirit of the Eva will help them escape just like it did back then, but she sure this time the angel is a lot stronger than before.
"Any ideas Ritsuko?" Asked Misato. "We can't stay there and do nothing there are children here."
"We have tried everything Misato, bombs, hacking you name it."
"What about the weapon?"
"It still needs some preparation besides it won't help us in this situation."
"So what are we going to do now?"
"The only thing that remains to do is to lure the angel with a decoy and blow it from the inside."
"But that will mean.."
"Yes, probably the death of the pilots. If there are lucky they have already died."
Misato slapped Ritsuko when hearing those words.
"There are children there Ritsuko. My children, if you think I am gonna let you hurt them to secure the Evas you are wrong."
" We are in war Misato we have to make sacrifices in order to win.They might be children but what they are now are soldiers . Don't forget you were the first to jump to this war for your precious revenge. It is to late to back down."
"The more I live with you more I realized how inhuman you are." Answered Misato.
"View this how you like it ." Said back Ritsuko.
"Rei what's your opinion on this?" Asked Misato.
Rei turned to face them and answered with same cold expression.
"The doctor is right director our objective is to fight and die in this war,we don't have the same luxury of the other people to turn a blind eye on this war. We fight so the others might live ,if we give up now then there won't be a future for humanity."
Misato was astounded by what she heard and felt all the more alienate from this group of cold machines.
It was true she participated in this world willingly to revenge the only time which her father showed a moment of love to her and her mother. But now after living so long with those children and reunited with Kaji she realized that all that she wanted in her life was a family.
So seeing them being so calm on this made her skin shiver. She won't allow them to do anything to their children.
The place was covered by a cold silence amongst the group. But then, a sudden earthquake started and the ground was shaken and the round angel was split in half and from it came a white light so bright that it was hard to that both 01 and 02 was coming afterwards.
The light could be seen by the distance as civilians saw the light with wonder and fear. Even far away cities and countries could see this light and even those who have their own dark plans for this war saw the light.
" So he finally came at long last. The countdown of the end for this world has begun." Said wickedly Lilith.
