xXx The Jedi Shadow xXx
xXx Ch. 01: Rainbow Vomit xXx
A woman dressed in a Chador and an accompanying Niqab watched as three individuals bid their farewell to a child that they had just placed upon the doorstep of the fourth house of Number 4 Privet Drive. It was the dead of night and the only light to be found was coming from the porch lights of the various houses, which was why these three likely failed to notice that they were being watched from further down the street, as her entire outfit was pitch black.
This woman was a Jedi Knight known by the name of Rina Draste. More to the point however, was that she was a member of the species known as the Zeltron. This meant that she would never be able to blend in with the inhabitants of this planet unless she opted to wear clothes such as what she currently had on, and even then it tended to draw attention as this sort of outfit wasn't very common in this particular country.
Rina had come to this planet in the company of fellow Jedi Knight Airol Tane. Unlike Rina though, Airol was able to blend in far more easily, he however was on the other side of the planet at this moment in time and was unaware of what she had witnessed throughout the entire course of the day.
Owls, lots and lots of owls. They had been flying this way and that, all over the country they had taken up residence within during their extended mission as the Watchmen of this newly discovered and very remote planet in the Unknown Regions. It wouldn't have bothered Rina at all, had she not become aware of the fact that owls were largely nocturnal, and thus wouldn't normally be flying around during the day.
That combined with the fact that she had detected a massive shift in the Force the previous night, meant that something major had happened. As she watched these three individual, she could tell that they were Force Sensitive, but that they each had rather miniscule levels of Force Potential. The child by comparison had an absolutely staggering amount of Force Potential.
If it hadn't been for the fact that the house that she and Airol were staying in happened to be on this street, she might never have discovered these individuals. She hadn't actually seen their arrival, so was quite surprised when the elderly woman used the Force to take on the appearance of a common house cat… no, correction, she didn't take on the appearance, she actually became a house cat. That so thoroughly defied Rina's understanding of what the Force could do that she'd need to consult the High Council to see if they had any idea what this woman had just done.
The old man walked in her direction and turned his gaze to look directly at her, indicating that he had noticed her at long last. She didn't know why he frowned, but would be somewhat amused when she later on discovered her outfit had thwarted his attempt to probe her mind due to the fact that she actually included the component that obscured her eyes.
He pointed a stick at her and murmured something, but she couldn't hear it. She suddenly felt an insistent urge to be anywhere else but here for the next several hours. She recognized it as a variation on a Force Suggestion, or as many people like to term it, a Jedi Mind Trick. It wasn't very difficult to shake the suggestion off, but she also knew he wouldn't leave unless he was certain she was no longer in the area. She stiffly turned and walked to the door of the structure she was living within, causing the old man's eyes to widen, as he seemingly understood she lived in this neighborhood at long last.
The interior of the structure was vastly different from the exterior, as it had rather spartan furnishings. This was something which would be typical for Jedi if they were on extended missions, they would only really live in a more luxurious setting if it in some way aided the mission they were performing or they somehow managed to inherit such luxuries from their parents, despite the tendency for Jedi to not know who their parents are.
Upon entering, Rina walked over to the cleverly disguised communication terminal and contacted the Jedi High Council. It was the dead of night even on Coruscant, but there was usually at least one Elder in the Council Chambers at all times.
To Rina's surprise it was Master Windu who answered the call. He seemed to be most perplexed for a few seconds and it took Rina a moment to understand why, "Oh sorry!" she quickly undid the veil that was concealing her face.
"The council wasn't expecting to hear from you or your partner anytime soon, Jedi Draste. Did something go wrong?" Windu inquired.
"You could say that, then again it might be that something went right. Last night I felt a massive shift in the Force. I haven't had a chance to check if Airol felt it as I was very swiftly distracted by the unusual behavior of both the inhabitants of this planet during the course of the day today. There were untold numbers of nocturnal avian creatures flying around during broad daylight. There were also a number of people celebrating the defeat of what seems like a Sith, that were also dressed in a manner of clothing that gave me the impression they were Jedi with color blindness…"
For the first time in her entire time as a Jedi she got to watch Mace Windu giving her a completely bemused expression, "Did you really just say that?"
"It gets worse I'm afraid. I just encountered three individuals leaving a toddler on the doorstep of the house opposite to the one Airol and I are residing within. This toddler already seems to have a presence in the Force as powerful as Airol and I. One of those three individuals also tried to use a variation of Force Suggestion on me. I believe this child to be responsible for the shift in the force I felt, or to have at least been present at the location where the shift originated from when it occurred."
"Interesting, I would need to consult Master Yoda, but I believe that the shift you felt was the defeat of the alleged Sith. Whether or not the child was responsible for that defeat is another matter, however it would likely be in this child's best interest if he were to be trained by the Order if he is as powerful as you believe him to be."
"Then I assume I should collect the child, and notify Airol that our mission on this planet is at least for now aborted?" Rina inquired.
With a nod of confirmation, Windu added, "Airol was also in communication with us earlier today, it seems you weren't the only one to come across a Force Sensitive child on this day." He then closed the commline so Rina could go about the task she was given permission to perform.
It hadn't taken her very long to realize that she was going to have to send her ship's escape pod down to pick up Airol, because the Force Users on this planet were doggedly persistent in trying to stop her from succeeding in taking the youngling she now knew to be named 'Harry Potter' anywhere.
These Force Users could theoretically travel to her ship if it were in orbit by way of their portkeys or apparition, but they'd have to know where the ship is in orbit in order to pull it off, and she wasn't just going to settle for orbit.
Once she and the youngling were safely parked on the side of this planet's natural satellite that the inhabitants couldn't actually observe from the planetary surface, she walked into her quarters within the ship. This was where she had placed the youngling within a playpen that she had managed to secure in-between attempts to attack her by the local spellcasters. He was watching her with a curious expression that seemed far more intelligent than any child his age would ordinarily have.
She smiled down at him even as she began changing out of the disguise she had worn on the planet and back into something far more comfortable for her. The Jedi Order made allowances for culturally appropriate wardrobe decisions for the female members of the order from species such as the Zeltron, Twi'lek, Togruta and several others, so naturally Rina exploited that for all it was worth due to the fact that the Zeltron concept of such clothing was 'anything to make us look more enticing'
Once she had finished changing, she walked over to a set of cubbies and pulled out a midichlorian counter. With that in hand, she walked over to the child and said, "This will sting just a bit, but I promise it will be over faster than you would ever believe, Harry."
The child just gurgled at her, and then started wailing his head off as soon as she pricked his shoulder to get the requisite blood sample. She then did what she assumed his mother might have done in such a situation, she proceeded to 'kiss it better.' That thankfully, seemed to be the right thing to do, as he quickly calmed down again.
After he had calmed down, Rina took a look at the readings she had just taken had to scowl. The midichlorian counter was showing her the same sort of error message that would appear on the calculators used by the inhabitants of this planet if someone tried to get it to output a number higher than the calculator could actually display.
"I'll be right back," she told the boy she was looking after as she walked into the room that had the ship's main computer. The main computer had an interface port for her handheld midichlorian counter for just such a situation. When she got the final reading it was a shock to discover he was just below Grand Master Yoda in terms of how many Midichlorians his tiny body contained within it.
"Unbelievable…"
"What is unbelievable?" the voice of her partner in 'crime' inquired as he entered the same part of the ship she was in.
"You found the escape pod then, good." Rina remarked. "It seems I've stumbled on the next Yoda."
She turned to look at Airol and blinked, "Well isn't she adorable."
"I wouldn't know," Airol remarked. Airol was a Miralukan, meaning he was utterly and completely blind, but thanks to the fact that his entire species could use the Force to one degree or another, was able to use it to overcome that limitation.
"Oh, she's very adorable, I assure you of that," Rina remarked. She smiled when she saw him turn his head towards the little girl in his arms and had to ask, "Do you know her name?"
"Apparently her mother gave her the name 'Tracey' with her final breath after delivering the child. I don't know the father's name, but the mother's name was Anne Davis." Airol admitted.
"Tracey Anne Davis then," Rina deduced. "Now, I have a playpen with little Harry in it that she can share. We then need to head to the Temple as it seems the inhabitants of this planet who are Force Sensitive are absurdly persistent and will likely find us if we stay where we are now, to say nothing of a return to the planet."
What neither Rina or Airol cared to admit, was that they had both basically kidnapped these two children, though Airol at least could say he had signed the proper documentation to gain temporary custody of Tracey.
Centuries ago, it would have been very difficult to travel from the Galactic Core to the Unknown Regions and vice versa. That isn't normally the case these days as the Galactic Senate had actually managed to obtain permission to establish Hyperspace Lanes to several of the planetary systems in those regions. However there was still a considerably vast stretch of the Unknown Regions that lack such Hyperspace Lanes.
Part of the reason that Earth has been able to develop without interference by spacefaring societies, is because it is so far away from the nearest Hyperspace Lane as to be invisible to the sensors of the ships traveling that space highway. If not for the staggering number of Force Users on the planet the Jedi Council may never have learned of its existence, and it took a Master being on that hyperspace lane for them to notice it to begin with.
This, along with keeping an eye on the younglings, had been why it took three days for Rina and Airol to reach that Hyperspace Lane and then a further three days of travel before they reached Coruscant. When they arrived the first thing that they did was to take the children to the section of the temple that housed the offices of the Jedi Fosterers, the people who were tasked with caring for those Younglings that were too young to begin training as a Jedi Initiate.
It was very difficult for Rina to part with young Harry, but she knew that it would be for the best if she followed the proper procedure. She was however, planning to apply to become his Master when he was ready to be taken as a Padawan Learner. She had a sneaking suspicion that Airol would be doing much the same thing with regards to Tracey.
Once that was done, both Rina and Airol headed to the High Council Chambers to give their reports. This was something they would do individually, as they had been involved in slightly different assignments and weren't entirely privy to what the other was tasked with.
Once it came time for Rina to provide her report she entered the room and found a rather large surprise to be waiting within.
"Master Fay!" Rina exclaimed as she ran forward and embraced the deceptively young looking Space Elf. Jedi Master Fay had been Rina's Jedi Master, and though they had often disagreed on whether or not one should carry a Lightsaber, they were rather close to one another.
"Calm yourself, young one." Fay remarked even despite the blush she was now wearing. It had been no secret among the council that Fay was affected by Rina's pheromones, although her mastery of the Force allowed her to ignore them for the most part.
"Learned of the planet you were assigned to, what have you?" the curious sounding voice of Jedi Grand Master Yoda inquired.
A blush formed on Rina's cheeks as she had forgotten where she was for a moment at seeing her Master again. Pulling away from Fay she gave the council a sheepish expression as she collected her thoughts, "It would appear that there are two societies living independently of one another on that planet."
"Could you elaborate on what makes you believe they are independent of one another?" one of the Masters inquired.
Rina paused for a moment as she tried to figure out how to explain what she had noticed. "The Force Sensitives on that planet don't appear to want the non-Force Sensitives to be aware they exist. It is my belief that something happened at some point in the history of that planet to cause the Force Sensitives to fear the more mundane inhabitants of the planet."
"You believe that to be the case?" another asked.
"The first time I laid eyes on these Force Sensitives was during the course of the day leading up to when I discovered Harry. The majority of them were dressed either in garments that looked like a rainbow had vomited on a Jedi's robes, or else they were dressed in an outfit that did not come anywhere close to matching the conventions of the mundane society."
"A great disturbance in the Force, felt I just did."
Both Fay and Rina broke out giggling at what the Grandmaster had just said, because they both knew he had just felt the two of them contemplating what it would take to get him to wear rainbow colored robes.
"The Force Sensitives on that planet also seem to believe Harry is some sort of messianic figure, and given that he has a Midichlorian count not that far below you, Grand Master Yoda, there may be some basis to their belief," Rina admitted.
"Is it your belief he is the one that will restore balance to the Force?" Mace Windu inquired.
"I doubt it," Rina admitted. "Everything I observed while on that planet leads me to believe he was conceived in the normal fashion for a human, or in other words, he seems to have had a father up until a few days ago."
"Another possibility, there is." Yoda spoke up, "Two opposing prophecies of equal merit, there could be."
The vast majority of the Master's were now looking at Yoda like he had finally gone senile. The only ones who weren't were Yaddle and Fay, as they were about the same age as Yoda and thus had some idea of what he might be considering.
"It has been known to occur," Yaddle admitted to the other Masters.
"Though it has never before occurred with a prophecy that impacts the galaxy as a whole," Fay promptly countered, "At least not that I'm aware of."
"More to say, you have?" Yoda inquired of Rina.
"I think… I think Harry enacted a Force Bond with me while I was checking his Midichlorian Count," Rina admitted in an awkward manner.
"While unusual, unheard of this is not." Yoda acknowledged. "The council will meditate on all, told us, you have. Informed of our findings, you will be."
Rina bowed to the council and prepared to leave, but was halted when she heard Fay speak the words, "Allow me to accompany you."
Rina nodded her gratitude and the Master and former Padawan left the chamber together. Truthfully, Fay wasn't actually a member of the Council, but she was the one who discovered the planet in question and thus had some interest in what occurs to the Watchmen that are tasked with supervising it.
"Now what is it you didn't inform the council of, young one?" Fay inquired.
"I'm unsure if I should tell you, Master Fay," Rina admitted.
"That sounded suspiciously like an admission that you plan to do or are actively engaged in doing, something which the Order would disapprove of," Fay pointed out, as she led her former student to a section of the temple that would be free of eavesdroppers. "Now you will tell me what that is, or I will tell the council that you aren't allowed anywhere near that boy."
Rina frowned at her former Master. True, one doesn't become the galaxy's best negotiator if they fail to learn how to blackmail someone, but to do so in such a way… Huffing after a moment she said, "I'm falling in love with Airol, and I think he feels the same."
Fay gave the girl a flat look, "I'll assume the fact that you simply think he feels that way, means you haven't spoken to him about your feelings. You will do so at your earliest convenience."
"B-but…"
"The Jedi Order has been known to bend the rules regarding romantic relationships if there is a good enough reason for doing such a thing. Those Jedi who are assigned to remote planets as their Watchmen are one of those exceptions." Fay informed her friend and student. She then felt the need to tease the girl a bit, "Although I admit, you two are the first partnered Watchmen in recent history where a pregnancy might occur."
That caused Rina to feel her hot pink skin become even more pink than it normally would have been, "Please stop…"
xXx Chapter Concluded xXx
Author's Note: Rina and Airol are original characters, though only Rina will be a major character in this story. Airol will be involved in the story, but as he isn't going to be directly involved in Harry's life, will have less screen-time in the story than Rina will have.
It is also worth noting that Rina is the same age as Lily, right down to the very day on which they were born by Earth's calendar system. She is not however, Lily's reincarnation, rather, had they ever met they would have achieved a Soul Bond in addition to a Force Bond, though not necessarily a romantic bond.
