I'm not sure what is worse, dreaming about carrots, or hearing a piercing cry. However, when I open my eyes the sound continues, and it sounds like its coming from outside my door. I find Sweet Pea, the youngest of the baby bunnies crying as she hugs a stuffed doll. I kneel down in front of her, handing her a small hankie I carry with me.
"Here, wipe your eyes and blow your nose," I tell her gently, and she does as she's told. Once she's a bi calmer, I ask what wrong. "My bunny got a owie on its arm. See?" she holds up her doll, and sure enough you can see the stuffing peeking through. I smile at Sweet Pea and hold out my hand. "Well, lucky for you, I know someone who can fix it." Sweet Pea's face lights up and she skips besides me, tears forgotten. "Oh, thank you, Cat Noir!" "Now, let's go find Marinette."
Marinette is in the kitchen, cooking some breakfast as two little pairs of eyes stare at her hungrily. "Princess, we have a problem. This little one's doll stuffing came out and now has a owie." Marinette smiles and winks at me, and as I serve up the bowls of porridge, Marinette squats down by Sweet Pea. "Its just a small tear. I can mend it for you after breakfast. She'll be feeling better in a jiffy."
"Mama and Papa had to go out early to collect carrots. Marinette said she'd make breakfast." I struggle to keep a straight face. So that's why we're having something non-carrot related. "Cat, we'll have to get back on the trail by later this morning." I nod, spooning porridge into my mouth.
Breakfast is a simple affair, but today, I wish it would go forever. Taking care of little bunnies in their parents absence, makes me long for children of my own even more.
After we eat, Marinette takes Sweet Pea on her lap, and begins to sew the stuffing back in. Sweet Pea watches with awe in her eyes, and insists Marinette is magic. Meanwhile, I read to the other two, with Radish sitting in my lap, eyes wide as we read about a angry farmer who just wanted to keep the crops to himself instead of sharing.
"Well, looks like everyone was entertained this morning, weren't they?" Lettuce comes in from the garden, wiping her hands on her apron. At once, there's literal hopping to be the first to tell of the morning adventures.
Sweet Pea shyly tugs on her mother's apron and whispers something into her long floppy ear. "Why, yes, I think that would make the perfect present. I'll have Papa go with you." "Present?" Marinette asks, her eyes alight with curiosity.
"Papa's got a whole garden full of roses up top," Lettuce explains as Sweet Pea holds her hand. "I want Carrots to go with you though, for a man has been hanging around the area, and we don't know what to make of him."
I look at Marinette. "Please, Lettuce, what did he look like?" Lettuce holds her daughter tighter, as if this man of which we speak of will swoop in and take her away. "He wasn't hard up for money, that's for sure, Kitty. The first time we saw him, he wore a purple suit and carried a cane. Almost seemed like a king, but he had a evil look to his face. Maybe it was a different person, but when we saw him next, he was just wearing a regular suit with a sad look on his face. I know you have your powers, my dears, but I just want you to be safe."
Carrots is happy to show us his garden, and as soon as we step into the sunshine, the scent of roses wafts over us. Secretly, I'm just glad to smelling anything that isn't a carrot.
"We'll pick one that doesn't have any thorns, Marinette," Carrots says, kindly. "But if a thorn did poke you, I'm sure Cat would be more then willing to kiss it better." I wink at him, while Marinette blushes. Clearly, the bunnies can tell we like each other.
I'm not sure if its my feline sense, but I feel like staying up top for awhile, just not in a Cat suit. Asking around the Bourough, a helpful bunny lends me a clean shirt, and overalls and straw hat. I may not be a farmer yet, but when this mission is over, I will have my own garden and you can call me Farmer Adrien.
Once up top, I see the man Lettuce and Carrots mentioned, and he looks so familiar. They were right about his sad look though, and I want to cheer him up.
"Hello, beautiful weather we're having aren't we?" The man gasps as he looks up from the rock he was sitting on, then recovers quickly. He has gray eyes that are clear and sharp, and I can see a small amount of stubble around his chin. Like Marinette, he's sketching, and I try to peek at his notebook. He slaps it closed, giving me a glare. "What are you?" he growls at me. "Some kind of curious cat?" Maybe this man is deadly serious, but I try to lighten the mood. "Depends on who you ask." "You remind me of someone I used to know. He was always cracking jokes too." "It dosen't hurt to smile or give someone a smile." I'm about to turn away, when he grabs my arm. "Wait! I'm looking for a young girl around your age, traveling with her partner. You haven't seen her, have you?"
Instantly, I know he's looking for Marinette, or more specifically Ladybug. Ladybug always frowns on lying, but to keep us both safe, this is one of those rare times. "No, I'm traveling alone. But I hope you find whatever you are looking for."
The man gets up and gives me a hard stare, before moving back up the hill, before disappearing. My arm is hurting when I get back, and find purplish briues as I re-enter the burrow.
I can't show this to Marinette, she'll know who I am under the mask. Oh, what to do, what to do? "Excuse me, do you if there is a doctor here?" I ask a passing bunny and she gives me instructions. The doctor lectures me about talking to strangers, and I know he's right, for Marinette would have said the same thing.
Yet something tells me I've seen that man before, in another life, another time. Could that have been Hawkmoth detransformed? Suddenly, I'm shaking as I picture what he could do to Marinette, and I need her comfort.
I feed her feeding Sweet Pea from a baby bottle as Lettuce looks on from her sewing. "Cat, your pale, are you okay? What did you see up top?" "Marinettte, I think I saw Hawkmoth." Marinette goes paper white and sits down on the floor with a thud. "He didn't see you as Cat did he?" I shake my head. "No, he saw me without my mask. But he asked about you, love. He asked about Ladybug."
I put my head in lap, but curl up into a ball to stop the awful shaking. "Cat, it will be okay. We have to face him evetually." I look up at her, my green eyes serious. "Marinette, I felt like I knew him. He even said I reminded him of someone. Marinette, what if that was my long lost father?" Marinette dosen't answer, but strokes my hair until I calm down and fall asleep.
When I wake, its lunchtime and then we head back on a trail, holding hands alert and ready for any signs of danger.
Hawkmoth stood on one of the bigger hills in the area, watching Cat Noir and his partner, but that girl with the buns in her hair, that couldn't be Ladybug, could it? For it were, he'd have no trouble getting her Miraculous, and once he had her, Cat would give up his ring to get her back. "I think I'll pay them a little visit."
Hawkmoth knew the woods like the back of his hand, waiting for nightfall to make his move. After all, moths loved the light and who could resist the light of a full moon?
"Maybe we should take turns sitting up and keeping watch, Kitty," Marinette says, as our supper cooks on the fire. The first two hours we'll watch together, and then we'll take turns napping till morning.
I keep my baton at the ready, scanning the woods, thankful for my night-vision. I guess I'm distracted when Marinette places the bowl of soup in my lap, for when I take a bite, I give a "Oh!" of pleasure. There isn't a carrot in this bowl to be tasted, the stew is thick with meat and gravy. The biscuit she made is light and fluffy, crumbling away in my mouth.
"Bet your glad to be past the carrots," she jokes, and I relax slightly. "I won't miss the veggies, but I'll miss our friends." Marinette sighs and comes around to sit by me. "I'll miss the youngesters. I hope I have kids as nice one day." She takes my hand, squeezing it tightly. "You'll make excellent mother, my love. After all, look at how you take care of me."
Marinette giggles. "Do you want me to brush your fur and polish your bell in the morning?" I tap my finger to lips, prentending to think about it. "Well, since your offer is so kind, I may have to take you up on it."
A rustle in the bushes stops all teasing, and I'm instantly upright, baton in hand. "Such a touching speech, its to bad she won't be able to do it," Hawkmoth walks into camp, lit up by the moonlight. I start to whirl my staff, using it as a shield. I'll protect Marinette bravely, but I fail to see her scurry into the bushes to transform.
