I wake, watching the colors dance on the crystal wall. Blue, green, pink. All in that rhythm and repeating, again and again. The colors are soft enough, that you could watch them all day without getting tired. Running a comb through my messy hair, I stand and see where Cat has slept for the night.
The colors seem to follow me, and stop watching them blink and off like fireflies on a warm summer night. "Iikki? Do you think the colors are following us for a reason?" Tikki hovers by head. "I'm not sure, but is a magical cave." Following the path, I see Cat awake and leaning against one the crystal walls. "Good morning, love," I sit down beside Cat, and he puts his arm around me after our usual hug and kiss. "Sleep well?" I nod. "I was watching the colors." "I think they mean something," Cat says. "But if we're supposed to know, it will tell us." I can hear his stomach growl, and sigh. We have rations in the packs, but there mostly snacks, not for a proper meal.
Just then, the earth begins to rumble and we hold our breath, as some sort of plant begins to sprout in front of our eyes. It almost looks like bean pole, but big, plump berries pop out in front of our eyes. The green leaves shimmer, almost beckoning Cat and I to give the berries a try. "Mm, juicy," Cat says, and I giggle as he pops a handful in his mouth, only for more to instantly grow in there place. "Hold on, Kitty. Maybe I can make oatmeal after all." I snap a couple of branches and take two small stones from my pack, lighting a small fire. Soon, we are eating oatmeal with juicy berries. Surprisingly, I feel full, but I would love some coffee. To bad a coffee plant can't grow. But I'm wrong.
As if the plant can read my thoughts, the first plant withers and dies as if its served its purpose, another growing in its place. Big round coffee beans and hazelnuts grow from the plant, and I smile a delighted smile begin plucking immediately. "Um, Princess, how you going to make coffee without a grinder?" I look at him, a determined look on my face. "Just watch me." I place all my beans and nuts into a small bowl, then take out a item from the packs I have yet to use. A pedestal. I don't know what brought me to pack this item, but thank goodness I did.
Stirring and mashing everything together, Cat boils water and soon we're toasting each other with hazelnut coffee. "Hawkmoth may have trapped us, but the crystal cave must know we are good." Cat giggles. "I don't know, Princess, if you don't have morning coffee, there's a slight chance you could turn evil." I roll my eyes.
Then Cat points one of the walls, glowing a pink color. Its like before, but the hue stays pink. "Cat?" I tell him slowly, an idea forming in my mind. "Could the pink light symbol love for when you and I have a close moment?" "It does seem to be that way, Princess."
I walk over to wall, sitting down and resting my palm against the wall. Then, before my eyes, the colors fade away, to show pictures of a young boy playing in a huge garden. His hair is the color of buttercups, eyes as green as the grass. Cat sits down next to me quietly. "Princess, that little boy is me." I stare at the young boy, his face so peaceful and full of joy, he could be a cherub, without the wings or cupid's bow.
A woman, similar to the young boy, enters the scene, and together they romp and twirl, like its the happiest day of their lives. Eventually, the woman stands and holds out her hand. "Come, Adrien. Time for your nap." I didn't feel Cat's hand in mine until now, and I glance at him. "Your name is Adrien?" Cat nods, his eyes transfixed on the woman. "Who-who is she?" "My mother. Emile Agreste."
Adrien, what a beautiful name. But before I can dwell on it further, the scene changes again. Heavy rain lashes at a bedroom window, and instead of playing, Adrien kneels by his mother's bedside. A damp cloth rests on Emile's forehead, and you can hear her rasping breath. Then darkness.
Cat and I wait with baited breath. That's not the end of the story is it? No, purple light flashes before our eyes, and a man howls in grief as he buries his wife. Emile is so beautiful however, he makes a glass coffin for her, keeping her hidden away. We watch a slighter older Adrien, slowly coming to terms with his grief, while his father's heart hardens and turns evil in every way. Hawkmoth is shown, then the lights come back up, ending with a small quiet voice. "Fear not, for she is not dead, but sleeping. Ladybug, only you can find the cure. Continue your journey to Hawkmoth's castle, and do not be discouraged on the road ahead." "But how do I do that, when we're trapped in here?" "Find the crystal, and you'll find your way."
Now everything returns to normal, but I need more instructions. "Wait!" The wall shifts from pink to blue to green. Then it clicks, and I turn to Cat. "The colors do me something, Kitty! The pink is our love, and the blue and green is you and me!" "Marinette, how did we get trapped in here in the first place?" Cat helps me with the mystery. "Hawkmoth trapped us in a crystal, so we to find the crystal, and we'll be free!"
Determined with fresh vigor, we head down the twisting paths, looking for a different or unusual crystal. Its not as easy as we thought it would be, and what we assume is noon, we have to take a break for lunch.
But the cave is right there, providing nourishing provisions, and by late afternoon, I find it. "Cat! Look! I think that's it!"
This part of the cave is chiller and my breath comes in little white clouds as I carefully climb and retrieve the crystal. I can feel its sharp points, and handle it with care. "Ready to be free?" Cat nods, and kneel down, drawing the crystal along the path, shouting to Cat, "cover your ears!"
The crystal makes a shrieking sound, and then all we hear is the musical sound of shattering, and we fall into the forest, no longer trapped.
Thank goodness for a soft landing in a pile of leaves, for thudding down onto the hard ground, sounds so unpleasant right now.
Cat and I stare at each other, smiles breaking over our faces and Cat helps me to my feet, before we break out into a dance. Hawkmoth may not be beaten yet, but he didn't keep us trapped!
Judging by the position of the sun, it seems to be late afternoon or early evening. Its just our luck though, as we decide to make camp, for a small stream is nearby.
As Cat fishes up on a tall gray rock, I wade further downstream to not scare the fish, and pick fresh greens. Despite Cat's non-fondness for veggies, he chows down. "You do know that's green stuff, right?" I giggle as I watch him eat. "As long as I don't see another carrot for awhile, I'll be just fine," he tells me with great dignity.
As we wait for the fire to burn down before heading off to bed, Cat points out different constellations in the star-speckled sky. A shooting star streaks across the heavens, moving so fast, if you blinked you would miss it. I find Cat's hand in the darkness. "Did you make a wish?" "Yeah," he says, softly. "I wish my mother is still alive. But even if she isn't, Princess, I'm not alone anymore." "Your very selfless, Kitten. If your mother is still alive, I hope I can meet her." "The crystals said she was. But something tells me its not going to be easy to find her."
Cat hugs me for a long time before I head to my tree-hole. Even with seeing himself when he was little, Cat is still hesitant to take off the mask. Or maybe he will soon, knowing that with or without it, I'm not leaving him, and sticking like glue to his side.
In his own tree-hole, Cat detransformed and curled up on his nest of leaves, thinking. Marinette had finally seen him without the mask, and she still loved him just the same. Maybe, just maybe it was time to take off the mask, even just for a few minutes so she knew his face. Adrien's heart thumped with nervousness, but his heart was telling him it was the right thing to do. Feeling sleepy, he drifted away to Dreamland, listening to the wind blowing through the branches above him, creating their own original melody.
During the night, a soft gentle rain fell, damping the dust, and turning in to mud. Heavy, sticky mud, hard to travel through. But trotting deep in the forest, traveled a herd of deer, for they liked to graze in the special meadow of clover.
The deer didn't see the mud until it was to late, and their dainty hoofs begin to sink and be bogged down in it.
Cat and Marinette slept peacefully, unaware of the deer's distress. Adrien, rising early, climbed out of the hole to stir up the fire, making the morning coffee before breakfast. He had taken off the mask, and he was excited but still nervous to see Marinette's face.
However, when Marinette rose, one of the deer in the mud, begin to cough out a alarm call. Hearing some distressed animal, Adrien re-donned his mask. A reveal would have to wait for a bit longer, for helping others came first.
