Another Month had passed marking three months since he had done the procedure to hopefully save the baby of his dear friend Willie and his wife Rachel. The fact that he was months out from the procedure didn't provide any relief whatsoever. He honestly felt like he wouldn't rest or feel normal again until the baby was here. "Safely" here that is.
He'd be lying to tell someone that this case wasn't causing an impact on his other career as a Doctor. He constantly second guessed every patient's diagnosis. And he's sure his niece Rose wasn't too pleased when he spent 30 minutes probing his tool in her ear. Thinking about it now he is pretty sure he left a mark in her ear with how hard he pushed the tool against the inside of her ear. Of course in simple cases like those his nervousness wouldn't do any harm. With Rachel's ordeal he couldn't be nervous for a second, a wrong move would cause harm to two lives.
Rachel was still taking it easy on modified bedrest. She would rest in bed with her kids at night. Willie informed him her favorite time was at night ,when she would have her two children cuddled up next to her reading a story to them. During the day since it was spring Rachel spent her days setting on the porch swing. Willie didn't tell him about that. Albert saw that with his own eyes. Once a week around 2 pm he'd ride by their house. He didn't hitch a wagon. He just simply got on one of his horses. He didn't take a wagon because he did not want to make any noise. Rachel not knowing he was watching her was of upmost importance. So once a week at 2 pm he'd ride by their house. Rachel always looked content and peaceful it brought him a mutual feeling when he saw her that way. He didn't want her to know he constantly watched his office door and feared her coming in because of a complication.
Albert was sure that Rachel and Willie including most everyone in the town felt worried about the survival of the baby. Rachel would atomically make it alive, but the baby was the one to worry about. He felt that from the town every time someone would talk to him about it they'd always quote "You are saving the baby. " But he didn't want to celebrate until he saw Rachel out on that porch holding her newborn.
No one talked about gender. But in his gut the baby is a boy. He couldn't prove it.
A few days after the three month mark Albert was looking over his patient files when he heard the bell. He turned around to see Willie entering the office , his heart started fiercely racing at that exact moment.
" Huh ? " Albert stated in a dizzy like tone.
"Everything is fine." Willie stated
It was then that Willie began staring at him.
Willie studied Albert for a good 5 minutes before he blurted out.
"I am taking her to a big city hospital Albert."
Part of him wanted to jump for joy at this announcement. In the same instant a feeling of nervous determination willed through his veins. Suddenly a peaceful emotion came over him.
"I am doing it. I might call the doctor that I watched do the procedure. I will see Rachel and the baby through this. "
Suddenly an idea came over Albert. It wasn't long ago that he'd broken down in front of Laura and Almanzo about this situation.
"'Did my sister have a little chat with you? " Albert stated in a tone that was cockier then he meant it to sound.
The look that came over Willie's face of nervousness confirmed all Albert needed to know.
"She Told you are worried sick, that you broke down a few weeks ago. She is worried it will throw you back into the Addiction. But I am the one who suggested taking Rachel to a hospital. " Willie said
Anger seethed over Albert. He knew that Laura might've spilled his breakdown to Willie. His Addiction? That is cold. It took place nearly a decade ago.
"She didn't have any business mentioning my addiction." Albert grunted.
"We all know it Albert , you punched the living daylights out of Jeb Carter. It is a miracle you became a doctor." Willie stated in a fast paced nervous tone.
Willie didn't mean anything by what he said, knowing Willie the statement was his odd way of making Albert feel better. Look at all you overcame. But to Albert it still sounded like Laura and Willie are both shocked that given his past they let him become a doctor.
He didn't state to the medical school about the Morphine season of life. He considered himself redeemed. Guess his sister and his childhood best friend thought different.
Willie at that moment said his farewell. He knew he'd overstepped his boundaries.
Albert didn't have any patients for the rest of the day. So when the clock struck 6 he went for a walk through the woods. Thinking of all he'd been through in his somewhat short life. Also questioning his decision about even attending medical school. One of the main reasons he didn't go home was because he didn't want to blow up at his sister. Despite her wrongful words he still had to live with her.
So with nearly three decades of horrific events heavy on his mind he walked and walked. Taking the long way It was pitch black dark when he arrived at the boarding house. When opened the door and walked into the den he saw his sister sobbing and pacing. Her sobs could've shook the floor if they'd gotten any harder.
When Laura finally realized a few minutes later that her brother had arrived home she stared him down and screamed these words that Brought terror through his body and beyond.
"Albert Ingalls Where Were You ? Willie called about an hour ago. Rachel is in having pains and she's bleeding."
