Chapter 251

Hiccups POV:

It's been two days since we left the island in search of the island where me and Toothless were hoping to find what might very well be the last flock of night fury's in existence on Midgard. We were lucky to find a few uninhabited islands along the way to rest on with two of them having a few herds of sheep and a couple of chickens, all of which I took into my shadow cloak so I could take them home and add them to my own livestock. Now after travelling for so long, the island we were searching for had finally come into sight and I had to say it looked like an interesting island since this island didn't seem to have any beaches and instead was surrounded by tall cliffs. The land surrounding the cliffs was mostly rock while littering the sides of the cliff were various pieces of ship hulls which most likely came from ships that crashed into the side. The island wasn't all rocks though as there were a few trees along with some grass, all surrounding what looked like a large mountain in the center of the island and took up most of the room. I patted Toothless' head and said.

"Let's do a quick circle around bud and then we'll go in for a landing."

He growled and nodded before we did a circle around and saw it was a small island with the mountain in the middle taking up most of the space. We came to land on one of the cliffsides as I ran a hand through my hair wondering where the night fury's could be but then again, after circling this island it was unlikely any dragon would stay on this island for long. I dismounted Toothless and decided it'd be easier to go take a look around the island on foot since it might be able to allow me to find some of this islands secrets that I missed. It was then Toothless let out a roar gaining my attention and I turned to see him gesturing to a wall with his muzzle making me raise an eyebrow in confusion. I walked up to examine the wall and saw a narrow crevice in it which looked to lead to somewhere but it'd be a tight squeeze for Toothless, so I'd have to bring him in my shadow coat. I turned to him and said.

"Alright Toothless, I know you don't like it but I'm going to take you into my shadow for a few minutes." He growled but gave a hesitant nod. "Thanks bud." I let my coats back down and had it extend beneath him before I quickly pulled him into my shadow and then turned back to the opening in the mountainside. "Let's see what this island's hiding."

I slowly made my way through the crevice and saw it was a lot deeper than I originally thought but fortunately it got wider, the deeper it got and there was a light at the end of it. When I finally reached the end, I was blinded for a moment by the suns light and what I saw made me realize that this wasn't a mountain but a dormant volcano as I'd just walked into the inside. The ground was covered in long grass, walls covered with moss and a large pond in the center of it all with light shining down into it and when I looked up, I realized why we didn't see it when flying. The top of the volcano had been mostly blocked by fallen rubble getting lodged into the side of the wall with branches being dropped on top of them forming a kind of roof with moss growing on them. Enough to let light shine in but also enough to block out a view of this place which I had to say was a bit of a shame since this place was beautiful.

I walked up to the pond and kneeled down and took a sip to find it was clean drinking water, but it was then I was brought out of my thoughts by the sound of a growl coming from across the pond. I immediately looked up and saw a pair of light ocean blue eyes glaring at me, but I was more focused on the owner of the eyes who was none other than a nightfury with very dark red almost black colored scales. I slowly stood up and held up my hands while gently waving my hands to show I wasn't a threat while backing away but I could tell this dragon wasn't buying it one bit by its glare. It was then it jumped over the pond and began marching towards me with its intent to kill me clear in its eyes but it was at that moment I realized I hadn't let Toothless out yet and hopefully he'd be able to show this night fury I wasn't a threat.

I quickly extended my shadow from behind me since I doubt this dragon would take too well to another night fury jumping out of the ground. I'd just began releasing Toothless when the night fury pounced towards me, but I quickly stepped to the side avoiding being pinned as the night fury turned to glare at me. The night fury continued to glare at me and pounced towards me again but this time, Toothless had been fully released and took notice of what was happening and was quick to react. He quickly pounced at the night fury while it was in mid air and tackled it to the ground before they began to wrestle with each other and not the playful kind I'd seen my dragons do at home. I didn't want to see this get out of hand and knew I needed to calm them down, so I quickly pulled out my calming flute and began playing a gentle toon that echoed off the walls. This got the attention of both dragons who stopped wrestling to look at me in confusion, but I could tell that they were calming down a bit before I lowered my flute from my mouth and said.

"Alright you two, knock it off and calm down." I then turned to the new night fury. "Alright big guy-" The night fury cut me off with a growl and glare making me realize my mistake. "Sorry girl, I just wanted to show that we're not here to hurt you and I'm sorry for my friend's behavior, he was just protecting me." She just continued to glare at me while Toothless came to stand in front of me protectively while glaring back at the female. "And clearly we're not starting off right."

The female growled at me while Toothless growled back and stepped forward as if daring her to try something before the wind came down towards us from behind her. Toothless sniffed a few times before his eyes widened confusing me as he let out a growl to which the female growled back before much to my shock Toothless let out an excited roar as did the female. They then began running around each other in circles, rubbing their heads together while crooning in joy and roaring in happiness that I'd never seen Toothless have. After a few moments they stopped before their attention turned back to me and although the female was still glaring at me, it wasn't as bad as it originally was before I asked.

"So, I take it you two know each other?" I then smirked at Toothless. "An old playmate turned former mate perhaps?" They both leaned their heads back in shock before the female looked ready to blast me as Toothless quickly shook his head rapidly and then using it to gesture to the female and then raising his body up and down which is something I saw him do only when playing with Chara which is when it clicked. "She's your sister?" He roared and nodded. "Well sorry for the confusion." I then looked at the female who I now knew to be Toothless' sister. "Well if you're anything like your brother, I know one way to show I'm not here to cause trouble."

I reached into my spiderpack and pulled out a trout which I threw to her with it landing in front of her before she sniffed it a few times and then quickly ate it. She then approached me and I couldn't help but get the feeling of déjà vu before she began to gargle in a way I recognized and I immediately knew what was coming. She then regurgitated a part of the fish covered in slobber while the female looked at me expectantly and I knew what she wanted me to do and not wanting to get on her bad side, I decided to get it over with. I picked up the fish and took a bite out of the fish before quickly swallowing it, doing my best to keep it down and avoid trying to taste the slobber and raw fish. I did my best to not show my disgust before saying.

"Thanks, but that's enough for me." I tossed the rest to Toothless who quickly grabbed it with his mouth and ate it. "Are you the only one here though?"

It was then I heard another growl from my side and turned to see a large opening in the wall that a night fury was walking out of but this night fury was a lot bigger than Toothless, had a nasty looking scar going down its right eye which was a milky white so clearly blind while its other eye was orange and glaring right at me. I could tell it didn't like me but the question was why until I got a better look at the scar and saw it was made by a blade and it was then I saw it had multiple scars covering its body from arrows, spears and blades. Seeing these, it was easy to tell why it wasn't too happy to see me near Toothless' sister or on this island and I knew it was not going to be easy to show I was a friend.

Toothless got in front of me growling and his sister quickly followed him in doing so while roaring a bit, but it was clear that the scarred night fury was not too eager to listen to either of them. I began trying to think of a way to show it I wasn't an enemy before an idea popped into my head and I slowly walked forward, earning a growl from the male by doing so. Before it could do anything though I released my wings to show we weren't that different making both the bigger night fury and Toothless' sister lean back in surprise, but that shock quickly gave way to curiosity. The large scarred one walked up to me slowly and sniffed my wings while keeping his guard up before pulling away and returned to his original position and kept on glaring at me but now it was one of suspicion instead of one of hatred. It was then I decided to take the next step and pulled out a fish and tossed it to the night fury with it landing in front of the scarred one who like Toothless' sister, smelt it a few times before eating it. It then continued to glare at me as Toothless walked up to it and growled and roared at him before the other did the same with both doing it back and forth and it was clear they were talking.

I just stood there and watched while pulling my wings in before Toothless' sister walked up and began sniffing my back, probably wondering where my wings went. It was then the scarred one let out a loud growl before turning around and walking back into the cave with Toothless gesturing for me to come. I ran up next to him and allowed him to lead me into the cave with his sister coming up to join me on the left side as we walked into what I now realized was a large tunnel. We kept following the scarred night fury, passing a few more tunnels with some having more night fury's who were glaring at me as we passed but I could see curiosity behind their glares. We walked for about five minutes before coming to a large cavern with multiple night fury's lounging around on rocks jutting out of the walls or laying on the ground.

All attention turned to me when we walked in though before the scarred one walked into one of the openings in the side of the wall before I heard him croon and growl a bit. I didn't know what was going on, but I had the feeling that whatever was in there was the reason why I was brought into this cavern in the first place. For a few moments, all I could do was wait while petting Toothless to calm both our nerves before the scarred night fury walked out again and used his head to gesture to the inside of the cavern. I was hesitant to do so but Toothless gently pushed me forward and I knew I wasn't in any real danger and walked into the cavern but what I saw made my blood run cold. There were two other night furies in the cavern, but my eyes were focused on one and that was the night fury in the middle of the group who had its back-right leg caught in an old dragon trap. The scarred one walked up and gently nuzzled the injured one before turning to me and let out a growl and gesturing to the wounded one's leg. From this I figured that Toothless told him about how I tended to wounded dragons and wanted me to help this one but judging by his glare, he wanted me to understand that he was watching me. I smiled at him and the others who were glaring daggers at me as I said.

"Don't worry, I'll have your friend healed and running around in no time."

I slowly walked up to the wounded dragon and kneeled down next to the wound and shook my head since this was not a nice sight to look at for multiple reasons. For starters the trap had dug in pretty deep and the wound had already begun to heal around meaning there was not only a chance of infection but it'll be even more painful to remove. To make matters even worse this trap was very, very old and by that, I meant completely rusted making the risk of infection even worse for the dragon. I turned to the scarred one and said.

"I can heal this but removing the traps going to be painful to remove." He growled and kept glaring before turning to the wounded night fury and growled a bit at her before she nodded as she lay her head down while one of the others lay its head down on its head to comfort it. "Alright, let's do this." I took a hold of the teeth of the trap and then as quickly as I could, ripped the trap open making the wounded night fury cry in pain and I couldn't blame it as I put the trap aside. "Now that that's out of the way, we can heal the wound." I pulled out my mystic waters and allowed them to wash over the wound and watched as they ran over the wound and leg six times before the wound was completely healed and allowed me to pick the water back up and put it away as I nodded. "All done!" I turned to the night fury. "Alright, it should be completely healed now so try stand up."

The night fury slowly did so while keeping its leg up but then slowly lowered it to the ground and then put some pressure on it before slowly walking around and then growling in joy and jumping around. The other night fury's all joined her while roaring and growling in joy before the one who I now knew to be a female with scales that were a little lighter than Toothless' and sky blue eyes ran up to me. She quickly pressed her head into my chest and began nuzzling me making me chuckle and gently scratch her head as I said.

"You're welcome."

I turned to the scarred one who was now standing next to a female night fury whose scales had a dark blue tint to them and aqua green eyes and saw him nod as if to say thank you. It was then I felt two more heads press into my sides and saw the other two night fury's nuzzling my side making me smile and rub their heads and could see they were a little bigger than the one I just healed. I'm guessing they were her parents and they wanted to thank me for helping their daughter when she was in so much pain thanks to the trap. I then remembered the trap and took it off the ground before putting it away so it could be disposed of properly before I looked at the night fury's and said.

"I'll let you guys be for now since I need to check on my own night fury."

They just crooned but I gave each one more pat before walking out of the cavern to find Toothless and his sister but when I saw them again, they were with two other night fury's who were a few inches bigger than them and judging how they were acting, I'm guessing they were the parents. The first one was the biggest and had black scales like his daughter but they were darker, light orange eyes and two small scratches across his nose while the female had scales with a dark ocean blue tint to them and the same eyes as her daughter. As for how they were acting, the one who I assumed was Toothless' mother was nuzzling Toothless who was enjoying himself while the father was looking Toothless up and down with a smile on his face. Toothless then noticed me and roared in joy before running up to me and running around me before nuzzling my chest as I chuckled and said.

"I'm alright bud but I'm guessing you told that scarred night fury about me tending to the wounded dragons after you found out about his wounded friend." He growled and nodded before he turned to the two new night fury's and growled before gesturing to me and they came up to me, sniffing my body. "I'm guessing these two are your parents, right?" He nodded. "And here I thought you were an orphan." I rubbed their heads. "I'm glad to see I was wrong."

It was then the night fury with all the scars walked out and climbed onto a large boulder before staring at me and growling while gesturing to the spot next to me. Toothless' parents pushed me towards the boulder clearly telling me that he wanted me next to him and not wanting to test the scarred one's patience, I quickly ran up and took position next to him. As soon as I did he growled before letting out a loud roar that echoed through the cove and tunnels, making me cover my ears since the sound was bouncing off the walls. When he finished roaring the sounds of feet hitting the ground and wings flapping filled the cavern before multiple night fury's came rushing from the tunnels while the ones who were already in ran up to stand in front of the boulder. I'm guessing the entire flock had arrived before the scarred one began roaring and growling while gesturing to me and I'm also guessing some of the night fury's weren't happy with what he was saying since they began roaring and growling. Toothless then flew onto the boulder next to me and went full alpha mode, glow and all before he let out a loud roar, quieting down all the night fury's who then bowed to him with the scarred one doing the same.

Toothless then growled at the scarred one who then sat back up with the others following and the large one then turned to the others before growling and roaring a bit more. A few night fury's came forward, looking up at me and on closer inspection I noticed that they were each injured in some way but it looked mostly like some simple scratches, bruises and the rare broken bone. It wasn't that hard that they were hoping for some help like the other wounded night fury and sighed before pulling out my mystic water as I said.

"I can never say no to a dragon in need and looks like these dragons are in need." I hopped down from the boulder and got to work.

Nightfall

I was in my tent that I'd set up earlier today, inside the large cavern that I'd been led to earlier and now laying down on my tents bed with my hands behind my head and looking up at the ceiling while thinking about my day with the night fury's. After I healed the first few, others came forward but thanks to my mystic waters, healing them was a piece of cake and helped me earn the trust of the flock. Speaking of the flock, I'd been able to figure things out when it comes to who stands where concerning the hierarchy of the flock and I had to say it was interesting. From what I could understand, the scarred one was the leader of the flock which I could easily tell was a duty he took very seriously since he kept an eye on me. As for the first night fury he had me help, I'm guessing she was his granddaughter while the other three were his family with the one close to his size was his mate and the smaller ones were the parents of the wounded one. Anyway, it was clear Toothless now held some authority over the flock since he showed his alpha mode to them which I'm guessing was not something many of them could do. As for Toothless' parents, I could tell they were grateful to me for bringing Toothless back to them but I was wondering how they'd handle it when we went back to the island but I wanted him to be happy so as much as it pains me, I was willing to leave him here with the others. I sighed knowing I was thinking too much into this and would deal with that problem when we come to it so for now, I let myself be embraced by the sweet realm of slumber.

Outside the tent

Dragons POV:

Toothless was now sitting with his family and glaring at his sister who was now rolling on the ground, laughing once he told them about his new name that Hiccup gave him. He couldn't blame her though since it was rather funny and his parents were barely holding in their own laughter at the name the little human had given their son but they couldn't complain since in addition to bringing their son back to them, he'd also healed their flocks wounded. To top it all off, he'd been fully accepted by the leader of their flock who gave the order to respect the little human who had helped their flock, unlike other humans who had harmed them. Their leader had become living proof of this since he'd encountered a lot of humans in his time who had littered his body with scars and even taken his eye when he was protecting his mate from some insane human who had these six monstrous dragons under his control. Their alpha was lucky to have escaped them and was only able to avoid that human coming after him by falling into the ocean and playing dead to make the human give up the chase. It was then Toothless finally spoke and said.

"Alright I get it, my humans name for me is funny." It was then his mother walked up and nuzzled him.

"Either way, I'm grateful to that human for bringing you back to us." His father than said.

"And as an alpha fury no less, honestly up till now I thought they were just a legend made up by the elders to remind us how strong our species are." His sister then said.

"Yeah, all hail the mighty TOOTHLESS!" She then laughed some more making Toothless glare as his mother walked up.

"Now sweetie, leave your brother alone." She stopped laughing.

"I'll try mom but it's not easy since I have years of teasing to make up for." She then walked up to Toothless and nuzzled him. "I missed you brother." He nuzzled her back.

"I missed you to sister." Their mother then said.

"I'm grateful to have our family back together after that horrid storm tore it apart." Everyone looked down in sadness as Toothless' father said.

"I remember how we were separated, spending days searching for you and then the pain when we believed the worst had happened to you."

"I searched for you all as well before I ended up crash landing on an island that had a nest being ruled by a queen who'd eat her subjects and after that, I'd join in the raids on my human's village for food to feed the queen by destroying the human's defenses." His sister then asked.

"Is that how you lost your tail fin?" He nodded.

"My human was the one who shot me down which cost me my tail fin and left me tied up in the forest." They all stared at him.

"And you befriended this human after that?" He nodded again.

"When he found me, he had a knife but, in his eyes, I could see the same fear I had and instead of killing me, he set me free and I took off after roaring in his face as a warning." His mother than asked.

"But how did you fly without a tail fin?"

"I didn't realize my fin was gone at the time and ended up getting trapped in a cove which became the place where we bonded with him bringing me food and building me a replacement fin which he can control from the saddle on my back." His father growled.

"So that human enslaved you by making it so you could fly only with him." Toothless glared at him.

"It's not like that father, we have a bond and he was able to make it so that when he's not with me, I can fly on my own but I prefer to fly with him since it's an amazing feeling to fly together as one." It was then a voice from behind him said.

"By the sounds of things, you and that small human share a close bond." They all turned to see the scarred alpha walking towards them and they each bowed.

"I do, we've helped each other through some tough spots including those where I've been enslaved, captured or turned into a statue." They all stared at him. "Long stories but the point is, we're friends and partners who always have each other's backs." The alpha shook his head.

"Well we'll have to go over it sometime but before that I'd like to know if you have found other flocks of our kind." Toothless sighed and shook his head.

"I'm afraid not, the only other night fury's we've come across were killed a long time ago with most of their eggs being smashed except for one that was hidden and fortunately hatched under our care." He smiled. "My sweet little girl, Twilight." The scarred one looked down. "Anyway, besides her the closest to our species I've seen are the females my rider calls the realm furies." All heads tilted in confusion. "From what I know, one of the human's gods took flocks of our kind and released them into other realms where they adapted and evolved to fit their new territories."

"And if these dragons are in other realms, then how did you find out about them."

"My human was allowed to travel from realm to realm for some great deed he did for all the realms and during that trip he gathered one of each of the species before returning to his island with them and helping them settle in." His mother than asked.

"Any females among them that catch the eye of my little comet?" Toothless rolled his eyes.

"Mother!" Toothless' father slapped her side with his tail.

"Stop teasing the boy, dear." It was then the scarred one asked.

"You and that human have gone through a lot, together haven't you?" Toothless shook his head.

"You have absolutely no idea sir but most of the adventures he goes on are worth it since it makes him stronger and helps our home grow which makes all of us safer."

"What can you tell me about your home?" Toothless smiled and began telling all he could about the island they called their home.

4 days later

Hiccups POV:

It's been four days since we discovered the night fury's and that time had been spent bonding with all the night fury's of the flock to the point that those who didn't trust me at first, now treated me as one of their own. As for my relationship with Toothless' family, I'd been able to get really close to the three of them to the point I decided to give each of them names. The mother was given the name 'Tide' since she had a blueish tint to her scales and kept gesturing to the ocean when I decided to give them names and nodded when I said Tide. The father on the other hand kept blasting to the air making me decide on the name 'Flare' for him since it looked like he enjoyed making large flares of lights in the sky. Finally, the sister who was by far the hardest to name since every name I came up with she'd either shake her head or growl at until I found her watching the sunset over the ocean which is when I settled for the name 'Seaset'.

Then there's the leader of the group who I'd grown close enough to give the name 'Odin' since he was missing an eye and had clearly gone through a lot to protect his flock. As for his family, I wasn't as close to them but still close enough to name the one I healed 'Moonlight' since whenever the moon came up she'd do a graceful flight under its light while the mother was named 'Frigg' after the goddess who was said to be Odin's wife. Also judging from how Moonlight acted around Toothless, I'm guessing they're old friends and possibly could be more than that but she'd have to earn the approval of the other females first but that was only if she came back with us. This brings up a problem I'm having though since after watching Toothless everyday with the other night fury's, I'm torn between bringing him back to the island and leaving him here with his own kind.

Besides that, I was able to forget my worries for a little while when I stumbled into a cavern full of treasures and items that I'm guessing the night fury's were able to gather from some of the ships. The night fury's didn't seem to care about them that much but to be safe I talked to Toothless and had him ask Odin if it was alright for me to take them. Odin's reaction was a nod and shrug before walking away showing me that he really couldn't care less about the items and some of the other night fury's just took one look and did the same. After that, I brought out my spiderpack and loaded all the treasures up and I had to say they were definitely going to look on either display or in my treasury and going through the various treasures helped take my mind off things.

Now it was the morning of our fourth day and I had decided we'd been here long enough and I'd already prepared a portal door last night to get home faster. I was looking at Toothless and his family who were playing together and knew I couldn't take him away from all this but I could still come back for visits. I sighed and took one last look at him being pinned to the ground by his sister and whispered.

"See ya bud, I'll miss you." I then made the door open up but before I could even step inside I heard a roar and turned to see Toothless running to me and tilted his head as asking what I was doing. "I'm going home bud but you should stay here with your family where you belong." He crooned and leaned into my body. "I know but it's better for you to stay with your family." He turned and growled at his family who ran up to us before he growled and roared a few times before they all ran up to me and began nuzzling me. "I'm going to miss you guys to." Seaset growled and shook her head before walking up and growling as if she was trying to tell me something while gesturing towards the portal door. "Are you trying to say you want to come with us."

She growled and quickly nodded as did her parents before her Flare let out a roar bringing Odin down from his place on the large boulder and he walked up to me. Flare roared and growled at him a bit before gesturing to the portal door making Odin look at the door, examining it before turning to me and then growling. He then let out another roar that echoed through the caverns and all the night fury's came rushing into the cavern before all the night fury's surrounded us. Odin gestured to the flock with his head before gesturing to me and then the portal door, which made what he wanted pretty easy to understand but to be sure I asked.

"You want to move your entire flock to my island?" He growled and nodded before I turned to Toothless. "You told them all about the island, didn't you?" He looked sheepish but I just smiled. "We'll have to make some renovations to the stable."

He growled and began bouncing around in joy as I rubbed my chin in thought, wondering how I was going to transport these guys since I couldn't do it like I did with Toothless since I highly doubted they'd like being pulled into my shadow or that they'd all fit in. This last problem was something I knew would cause trouble since a flock of night fury's being piled on top of each other is just asking for trouble, especially with the sheep already in there but night fury's couldn't travel so far and in broad daylight, people would notice them which is not something I wanted exposed. It was then I remembered a way to get us back to the island fast and in comfort and smiled before I mounted Toothless as I said.

"Let's show these guys how we travel long trips."

He crooned and we took off into the air and broke through the opening's coverings with the rest of the flock following before I steered Toothless down towards the water where I released my ship. I chuckled at the looks of shock on all the night fury's faces when the ship fully formed and began floating up to us before me and Toothless came to land on top of its deck. Soon the others followed before we began leading them to the dragon's pens so they could all travel in peace and hopefully get back to the island fast. Once they were all settled in, I told Toothless to keep an eye on them before the ship took off home and knew when I got back, I had a lot of work ahead of me when it comes to helping settle the new night fury's in, explaining things to my family and planning a raid on these shipwrecks around the island since some of them might have some valuable stuff. I sighed knowing that all I could do was take the challenges that were coming in these future days one at a time and besides, it'll all be worth it in the end.

AN: Wow, this chapter got finished a lot faster than I expected but hey that's what you get when you know what to do with the next chapter. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed the chapter and for those of you wondering if it means we're getting close to HTTYD 3, the answer is no as there's still a lot that has to happen. Now until next time, have a nice day and review kindly please.
