A/N: And Chapter 2 is up. I didn't really specify if this was in a more modern setting or what, and the answer to that is simple. I don't know yet. I guess we'll see as it goes along. Now that's off my chest, on with the actual chapter.
Maribelle was a different sort of girl when it came to personalities. She knew she was privilaged with money, and she wanted the whole school to know it. She walked with the grace of a maiden in a medievil castle. Maribelle's mother was an aclaimed writer, and her father owned a publishing company. To say the least, Maribelle grew up living and breathing literature. For as long as Stahl had known her, the girl was always right by Cordelia's side, only leaving it for the few classes they didn't have in common. Gym was one of those classes. However, the girl had plenty of peers to talk to, so seeing her sitting alone and sad threw Stahl for a loop.
Stahl took a breath and started his aproached to Maribelle. He knew the girl was a master at hiding her true intentions, so he was prepared to decipher waht was really wrong. The girl looked fair today, with her normal attire of designer clothes and accessories. Her blonde locks were pulled up in a ponytail, except for a few sray strands that fell in her face. The blue in her normally-prideful eyes was darker than the usual vibrant color. Her thoghts seemed to be distant from the scenery around her. Stahl walked up and tapped her on the shoulder. When she looked up at him standing there, the boy noticed her eyes were puffy, and dark bags were under her lids. "Oh gods. Maribelle, what's up with you? You look less..I don't know...like yourself."
Maribelle simply shook her head. "It's nothing you would understand. Even if you did, there's no way you can help." She attempted to shoo him away by waving a manicured hand in his direction. "Well I don't know if I can help until you tell me, so go ahead." He crouched down and sat on his haunches. "I've got time to talk anyway, so shoot."
The girl sighed glumly. "It's just...It's Gregor. He's did something stupid. He thinks taht we should find our own place to live, and I disagreed with him. We argued, and now he's ignoring me when I try to apologize." Stahl nodded as she went on. Gregor was a tough guy to get a view on. The guy was a trouble-maker, yet he entered the school through good grades and a high recomendation from a well-like associate of the headmaster. He proved to be a hassle to handle around all the higher class students at first, but then he started to hang out with Maribelle. The two seemed to have a stable relationship, until now that is. "Why would he want to move? Is his old home that bad?"
Maribelle shook her head. "That's what I asked him. He just said, 'you wouldn't understand babe.' Then he went off grumbling something about 'bros' and too much drinking. Now I'm worried he won't forgive me." She sighed and placed a palm on her forehead. "What would you do in this situation? I know what I said earlierwas harsh, but I'm extremely desperate for help." Tears began to well up in her eys again. Stahl quickly placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry about it. I was going to help even if you said not to. If I was you...let's see..I would give Gregor some time to cool off. Then I would aproach him later on. Don't worry. He's probably just stressed out or something. He needs alone time, just like you do sometimes." Maribelle nodded and sniffled. "True. I never thought that he probably has a whole ton of stuff on his shoulders as well. I'll try what you said. Thanks." She abruptly stood up and wrapped him in a heart-felt hug.
Stahl's eyes widened. Maribelle had always wanted to keep a certain distance away from people who didn't match her picky criteria, so he embrace shocked him more tahn her saddeded look. He looked around at the confused faces of the other people in the gym and lightly returned the hug, not sure what to do. He patted her back and tried to push her away to breathe. "Uh...All I did was tell you my view. I really don't need this. Please let go. You're cutting off my circulation."
She gasped and let go of him. Her cheeks began to flush a bright red. "Oh..I'm sorry. It's just...thank you again, Stahl. You were helpful. I probably would've embarrassed myself if you didn't do this. Thank you again. I owe you one. Well.. I better put myself back together. Talk to you later maybe." She smiled shyly and walked off with grace, desperately trying to wash away the ugly aide lf her that just showed. Stahl watched her walk and smiled. That went much better than I thought it would. I guess this day isn't going to be that bad.
A few moments later, Stahl was walking around the field with one of his friends, but he wasn't really involved with the conversation all that much. He was thinking about the last words Maribelle had said earlier. She didn't just say bye. She mentioned that they may talk later. It was just a formality. She probably just said that to be nice. The words were spoken so clearly, no hint of deeper meaning or anything, but they rattled in his brain relentlessly. What happens if it wasn't? What if she is actually interested in me? No..she's with Gregor, right? They did just have a fight. Ugh...just don't think about it, Stahl. He sighed and ran a hand through his dark curls. He agreed with his mind and just put it in storage for later debate. He shook his head and joined the conversation.
The class continued on normally, the nerds retreating to tier corners and the preps chatting up a storm. Even Maribelle was back to her normal self. Stahl just wandered around the room, looking for someone who may relieve his boredom. However, everybody seemed to have something to do, so he went to the entrance and sat down near the door. He was about to lay back when a girl, probably a year younger than him walked in through the door with a paper in her hands. She looked to her left and right as she walked in, and finally noticed Stahl sitting there. "Hello there. Where is Mr. Basilio?" She glanced around the room again. Stahl shrugged. "I don't know. He went out a couple of minutes ago, and hasn't came back yet. Why do you need him?" She looked at him and shook her head. "Oh..it's just that I have a paper from the office taht all teachers should read. Here. Can you give this to him once he comes back?" She didn't even wait for a response, she already had the paper held out towards him.
Stahl shrugged again. "Okay... I guess I could. Do I just tell him that it's important and from the office, or does he need to announce ot to the whole class?" The woman shook her head. "I don't know. It probably says it on there." She pointed at the paper. "You see, even I haven't read it yet. It's only for teachers, and we all know how secretive some of that is. Now that you're taking care of the delivery to Mr. Basilio, I guess I'm done here. Goodbye." She quickly nodded and left the room in a brisk walk.
Stahl looked between the now swinging doors and the paper in his hands. Well...That was strange. How can something as important as a paper be restricted for teachers. It won't harm anyone if I took a peek I guess. What even is this? He looked the paper over in his hand. It had in big letters across the top: 'ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL TEACHERS. IMPORTANT!' Okay then. She was serious. He started to read through the letter. It seemed to be a normal memo, the type the school normally gives out when something important has been rescheduled or something.
Then, Stahl reached the midpoint of the memo. His eye widened. It went one describing a new club that would begin after school that day. That was normal fare, since new clubs always sprung up during this time of year. What was unusal was the list of students that were already signed up by the Headmaster himself. On this list, there was people like Rickon, Nowi, and Vaike. These people normally signed up for clubs, even if they didn't know what was entailed in signing up. The last two names are what surprised Stahl.
At the bottome of the list was 'Stahl Quid and Cordelia Xalty.' Stahl's eyes widened to the size of plates. A wave of mixed emotions washed over him. Fear, anger, and sadness were first to come and leave, but they werereplaced by joy and mostly confusion. Why me? What even is this club? And why Cordelia, but none of her friends? It didn't make much sense at all. The head master was her dad, so why did he isolate her from her closest friends.
Stahl didn't have much time to think about it because the gym doors opened yet again and Mr. Basilio walked in. He looked like his normal gruff self, his face in perpetual discontent. He looked around and saw Stahl sitting there. "Hey, Quid! Did anything stupid happen while I was gone?" Stahl shook his head."Nothing other than the ordinary, sir. Just this letter from the office that the lady said was extremely urgent." The man's head tilted. "Well...that's strange. I just came back from the office. Give it to me, and I'll decide if it's important enough to tell you chumps." He snatched the paper out of the boy's hands before he could even respond. He skimmed through the memo, his features showing no names until he reached the names. "Well, this may be slightly important. You're going to have an interesting evening it seems."
Stahl nodded glumly, his thoughts not really on the conversation. He was thinking about the new club. What could've it been? They already have after-school groups for many things, from Chess to Banking 101, which is about as boring as it sounds. However, all of these have never been mandatory for students to attend, so there was always a group of people who decided to stay anti-social and not join any of the clubs. Stahl was normally one of those people. He didn't have an easy way home without relying on drivers or friends with cars. He sighed. He knew he wouldn't win an argument with a request from such high command. He stood up and walked with Mr. Basilio over to hear the news for a second time. Everybody saw the large man walking through, but they just continued on with thier normal acticivites, so the teacher did his normal method of getting his students' attentions: by shouting of course. "Hey! Everybody! Get your arses over here! I have something to tell you!"
Stahl cringed and tensed at the sudden loud noise mere inches from his ear. "Geez! Warn somebody when you're going to do that!" The gruff man laughed deeply. "Don't worry. I will." Once everybody was near he began to read off the memo. Everybody's faces did the exact same set of changes as Mr. Basilio's did. Quiet whispers and mumbles spread through the crowd.
The teens were silenced by the giant man's cough. "Okay! You can return to your regular activities. And remember, if you're name was on that list I said, make sure you don't miss the first day of your new club."
The class returned to normal pretty quickly. Stahl returned to his quiet haven near the door and began to think about all of the stuff that had just occurred in this one class. He sighed. Well, sure looks like I have one hell of an evening on my hands. The bell denoting th end of class rang and Stahl stood up and collected up his things.
However, as he was heading towards the door he saw a figure with blond curls coming towards him. Great. Can't I have one normal break in all this insanity? Rapidly aproaching him with a smile on her face, was Maribelle.
