The incident with Riley had everyone on high alert. If I already didn't feel smothered, then I definitely was now. I was being guarded 24/7. One of my siblings or Alex would always be with me. I think the thought that I could have gotten hurt so easily rattled everyone.
True to his words, Carlisle had the window fixed. Though I couldn't get the image or feeling of me being pulled out of the window out of my mind. Every time I looked at that window the memory of that night kept replaying in my head. I have stayed away from that window, afraid that Riley would come back and try to kill me.
I could tell that my family was worried about me. I was so shaken up that I have barely eaten or said anything. I could hardly sleep because every time I did I would end up having a nightmare.
The dreams were always different but they always ended the same. It always ended with me being dead. I could tell that my family felt helpless. Jasper tried to calm me down but even then there was only so much that he could do.
We didn't tell Edward about what happened until he got back home. I didn't want him to be worried about me when he was all the way in Florida. I was correct on what his reaction would be. He freaked out and made sure he was with me whenever he could. I could tell he was starting to blame himself for what happened. It was honestly starting to get annoying.
It wasn't just Edward, I could tell that my whole family were blaming themselves for the almost accident. I tried to reassure everyone but that only went so far.
I found myself laying in bed trying not to go to sleep. Evertime I did, a nightmare would occur. I don't know how much more of those dreams that I could take.
"Are you ok?" I turn my head to see Alex at my door.
"I don't know what to do anymore. I'm tired but I don't want to go to sleep." Alex looked at me sympathetically. He walked over and sat on my bed. I scooted over to give him some room.
"I'm sorry. I know that you are frightened but we will protect you."
"I know. I just keep worrying about my safety, Bella's safety, and you and my family. I never considered my safety before because I had all of you. I was so naive to believe that. I'm constantly scared that him or Victoria will come here and kill me." Alex grabbed my hand and squeezed it.
"You know that we won't let that happen."
"I know but I can't help but to worry. The nightmares aren't helping." Alex takes his hand and strokes my head.
"Just get some sleep. We are all here if you need us." I look at him as he starts to stand up. I grab his hand before he walks away.
"Can you please stay with me? I don't want to be alone right now." Alex eyes softened and he layed on my bed next to me. I placed my head on his shoulder and fell asleep while he rubbed my back soothingly. For the first night since the incident, I didn't have any dreams or nightmares.
The next couple of days consisted of dreamless nights. Alex stayed with me when I was sleeping and I felt at peace.
The drive to school was quiet today. Edward was driving and I can tell that he knows I'm staring at him. He still hasn't told Bella about Victoria coming or that I was targeted as well. She is in the dark and I knew this was going to blow up in his face. We soon get to school and Edward's head snaps to the side as he parks. Edward starts clenching onto the steering wheel tightly, straining in an effort not to break it into pieces.
He turns and looks at the both of us. "If I told both of you to do something, would you trust me?"
I narrow my eyes at him. "That depends," I reply.
"I was afraid that you would say that."
"Edward, what do you want us to do," questions Bella.
I stare at him confusingly as he looks at Bella and I. "Will you two please stay in the car." Before we can reply, he gets out of the car and starts walking away. Me and Bella both get out and walk towards him. It was then that I saw Jacob leaning against his motorcycle.
I forgot that he would be here. What really threw me off guard was that he wasn't alone. There leaning against a car right next to Jacob was Paul Lahote. What is he doing here?
Edward sighs when he sees us. "Of course not."
"Hey Jacob. What are you doing here?" I got nervous as Bella stared at Jacob. I knew that she was about to find out about Victoria.
"Charlie said that you were gone for the weekend."
"Yeah, I was in Florida visiting my mom," replied Bella.
"He's here to make sure that your still alive," interjects Edward. I just remained quiet and observed the whole situation.
"Stay out of my head leech." I tightened my hand on the strap of my backpack. I hope nothing bad comes from this.
"What are you doing here Paul?" My eyes stare at him in confusion. In the book and movie only Jacob came to Bella's school.
Paul just shrugged his shoulders while looking bored. "Wanted to make sure you were ok."
"Also to give us a message. Message delivered. Considered us warned." I shuffle my feet as Bella looks confused.
"Warned? What are you talking about? Why would you be concerned about Sophie?" Realization dawns on Jacob and Paul's faces.
"You didn't tell her?" Jacob's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Just drop it Jacob."
"What don't I know?" I could tell that Bella was getting frustrated.
"He didn't tell you that their big brother crossed the line Saturday night?" Jacob's voice was layered in sarcasm. Jacob's eyes looked at all of us before landing back on Edward. "Paul was totally justified..."
"It was no-man's land," hissed Edward.
Paul glares at Edward and pushes off of his car. He stands next to Jacob and glares at Edward. "No it wasn't!" Paul looked pissed and I could tell that he was starting to shake. Oh no. Not here. Jacob puts a hand on Paul's shoulder and he takes to deep breathes to calm himself down.
"Why haven't you told her? She deserves to know." Bella stared at Jacob and Edward before looking at me. I just stared at my shoes trying not to look guilty.
It seemed that everything clicked into place in her mind. Bella's eyes widened. "She was here, she came for me. That's why you wanted us to go to Florida suddenly." She turned to Edward. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Edward sighed in frustration. "I didn't want you to worry."
"No but you lied to me." Bella looks at me and then back at Edward. "What did Paul mean about checking to make sure Sophie was ok."
Edward sighed. "A vampire showed up at our house and attacked Sophie. He pulled her out of a window on the second floor. Alex was there and he was able to save her." Bella turned and looked at me. I was racked with guilt about her being in the dark.
"Sophie, your ok."
I nodded my head and gave her a small smile. "Yeah, I'm ok." Bella pauses before turning back to Jacob.
"You. You haven't returned any of my calls." Jacob shakes his head as he turns back towards his motorcycle.
"I didn't have anything to say."
"Well I have tons." Bella then marches over to Jacob.
Edward stops her as Jacob gets on his bike. "Bella."
"You have to trust me Edward."
"I do trust you, it's him that I dont." Bella stares at Edward before shaking off his hand and walking to Jacob.
I can only stare at her as she gets on the bike and watch as Jacob Black drives away with her.
"Well, I'm glad your ok." I look to see Paul getting into his car. I completely forgot that he was here.
"Is that really why you came here? Or do you have an ulterior motive." Paul just snorts.
"Yeah right. You can come too if you want."
"What? Like, come to the reservation with you? Right now?" Paul shrugs his shoulders.
"Sure, why not. Think you can get past your family? Make a decision fast, I don't have all day for you." Such a gentleman.
I look at Edward and see that he's starting to protest. "Edward I'll go to make sure Bella is safe."
"Absolutely not. You aren't going. You can't go."
"Actually I can. I'm 18 which makes me a legal adult."
"Sophie your still grounded remember. What do you think Carlisle will do?"
"Tell Carlisle that he can add another week or month to me being grounded. I'm doing this for you and Bella. I will be back later. I'll make sure that she's ok. You can't go over the line but I can."
"What about Alex?" Edward was trying his best on preventing me from going. I knew that Alex wouldn't be happy about me being in La Push. I just hope Alex doesn't cross the line in his anger.
"I'll be back home later. Tell him that I will make it up to him. Also tell him that if he tries to cross the line then he has me to worry about instead of the wolves."
"Well are you coming or not princess?" I rolled my eyes. Paul is starting to really annoy me. I look at Edward before turning around and heading to Paul's car.
I get in and put my seat belt on. "Don't make me regret this." Paul just smirks.
"Whatever you say." I sigh as Paul puts the car into drive and drives out of the school parking lot. Heading to La Push.
