Chapter 4

After Hiccup got away from the ring, he remembered to how the Nightfury tried to catch some fish but couldn't. Deciding to make a peace offering, he goes down to the docks and gets a small bag with five fish. When he got the fish, he stops by the armory and takes a shield. After that, he heads back home to get his dagger; wild animals are still in the forest, and stores it inside his vest. When he gets everything he wants, he goes into the woods behind his house and returns to where the dragon was. On the way there, he tries to think of a way to show that he doesn't mean any harm. When he reached the cove, he still didn't devise a plan but decided to go in anyway.

Holding the shield in front of him, he moves between two rocks, only for the shield to get stuck in between. Pulling it out didn't work, so he ducks under it and tries from the other side but with the same result. That thing is stuck there well. Looking around, he can't find the dragon, so he puts the bag on the ground and pulls out a fish. Turning around, he walks in a bit more, trying to see if he can find the dragon. After a few steps, he hears a soft growl behind him. Turning around, he spots that sneaky animal on top of a small rock pillar. The Nightfury slowly stands up and climbs before the boy sniffing for the fish. It stops a few feet in front of him and looks at him in curiosity. He holds the fish out to the dragon to show it what he wants to do. It slowly approaches him. It spots the dagger on him, moves back, and gives him a warning growl. Seeing that the dragon is eyeing his dagger, he decides to unarm himself by throwing it away, which causes it to land in the pond. After the dragon sees him unarmed and holding the fish for it out again, it creps closer and opens his mouth, showing the boy a toothless mouth.

"Huh. Toothless. I could have sworn you had..." he gets cut off by teeth popping out of its gums. The dragon snatches the fish out of his hand and swallows it in two bites. "Teeth." Hiccup finishes sheepishly. Looking at the young Viking, it approaches him to look for more. "I have four more if you want?" he told him (the dragon probably doesn't like to be called an "it") and moved to the bag and emptied it on the ground. The dragon gave a happy warble before gulping down the few fish in seconds. As he looks back again at the boy, he walks closer, noticing its thin stature. Hiccup backs away until his back is against a rock and watches as the dragon makes a choking sound until a slimy half of a fish drops onto his lap, soaking his clothes with dragon slobber.

Looking disgustingly at the fish, he sits back up and looks at the dragon, which now sits on his hind legs, confused at his actions. The dragon decides to help him, looks at the fish, and then back at him again. 'This has to be a joke...' he thinks before picking up the slimy object and biting it. The taste in a word was. Disgusting. He doesn't like raw fish, and now it was covered in dragon spit after it was in the dragon's stomach. Holding the raw fish back at the dragon and hoping this would be enough, he forces a smile to convince him that he got it. But the Nightfury makes a swallowing sound to what he only dropped his arms in defeat. He tries his hardest to swallow the fish, but he nearly pukes. Forcing the puke and fish down, he shudders at the awful taste. Smiling at the dragon, he tries not to think of what he just did. The dragon sees him smile and narrows his eyes before mimicking the smile without his teeth. Hiccup looks fascinated at the dragon and tries to reach out for him, but the dragon growls and flies toward the other side of the cove. Making himself an ash bed with his flame, the dragon lays down to sleep. Hiccup decides to leave him alone and starts drawing in the dirt.

After a few hours, the dragon woke up. Somewhere between these hours the dragon decided to hang upside down from a tree branch. Looking around, because the dragon could still smell the Viking, he spots him sitting on a rock and decides to see what he is up to.

Hiccup was drawing the dragon's head when he noticed a shadow behind him. Looking to his right discreetly, he sees that it's the Nightfury. He decides to continue drawing but looks back when the dragon walks off. The dragon pulled out a small tree and started drawing random lines (for him, since he didn't know it had a meaning) in the dirt. Hiccup accidentaly gets hit on the head with the top of the small tree but doesn't really mind since he's paying more attention to the dragon's action. When the dragon finishes, he sits down with an approving nod to show he has completed his masterpiece.

Hiccup stands up to look at it from a different angle but accidentaly steps on one of the lines, which causes the dragon to growl. Pulling his foot off the line, the dragon stops growling. He stepped a few times on the lines, and every time the dragon growled until he put his foot on the other side of the line. That earned him a small purr from the dragon. Stepping over the lines, he was so focused that he didn't notice the dragon moving to where he would end up. When Hiccup bumps against something with his back, he freezes as he feels a warm breath on his neck. Slowly turning around, he sees the dragon in front of him with an expectant look in his eyes. Trying his luck, he decides to stretch out his arm towards the dragon, but he gets a slight growl. 'It's not a threat... he wants me to show him something. But what?' Then one word came into his mind. Trust. So hoping it would work, he lowers his head and looks away from the dragon while slowly stretching his arm out but stops a few inches from it.

The dragon's eyes widen at this. He didn't think the human would trust him but thought, 'If he can trust me, then I can trust him. Maybe we can form a friendship.' with his mind made up, the dragon closes his eyes and puts his snout in the palms of the young boy.

When the two touched, they were suddenly pulled into each other's minds. They saw what the other lived through where pretty similar.

The Nightfury saw that the boy was treated harshly for being different then the others. They bullied him and sometimes even beat him up. He saw that his father never cared about him, not even trying to train him. He was how he was chosen to get good or be banished. Anger fills the dragon as he sees that the people who were supposed to protect him treated him. He wanted to slaughter this entire village for this. Especially five teens who were the most brutal to him.

The dragon wants to make the village pay since he knows that the boy is unique to him. He heard of this bond being formed only by two soulmates. It was never heard of being made between a human and a dragon, but he knew this boy was his soulmate. The bond would allow them to feel the emotion of the other and know what they want to do even if no one said anything. It even had the slight possibility that the boy's senses would improve to his standards, and he might even get stronger.

Hiccup saw what the dragon lived through. He saw that the dragon never really had friends because the dragons tend to keep to their species, and since he was the only Nightfury, no dragon ever really wanted to do anything with him. The other dragons whispered behind his back, saying that he was cursed and would be extinct in a few years. He experienced how they would sometimes ally themselves to push him out of his cave in the nest because, to them, he didn't deserve a sleeping place. Hiccup started to feel anger towards the dragons who treated him like that. He wants to make them respect him since he is the strongest dragon of all of them.

When they pulled away from each other, they looked into each other's eyes for a minute. Then the dragon nudged him in his middle, to which the boy happily laughed. Hiccup hugged his head, "I know what you had to live through. I'm sorry for you. You never did anything to them, and they treated you like some pest. I'm so sorry." he said to him.

"Don't worry about me, young one. I'm more worried about you. I saw those people beat you up and talk you down. If I could still fly, I would tear them apart one by one." the dragon said. Hiccup looked shocked around the cove, trying to find out where the voice came from. As he finds nothing, he looks back at the dragon and tests his luck. "Did you just talk?" he asks. The dragon grunts but replies "Yes, I talked to you. I know it sounds weird, but I will explain it tomorrow. You need to return to your village since it's getting dark. And don't worry about me. I'll wait till you come back tomorrow. You will come back tomorrow, right?" Hiccup smiles and pets him on the head, "Of course, I will be back tomorrow. See you tomorrow!" he shouts back as he runs out of the cove and back home.

(In the village)

Walking back to his house, lost in thoughts about today's events, he didn't notice the five figures approaching him. That is, until he gets punched in the back of the head. Hard. He drops to the floor holding his head and looking up. His eyes instantly widen in fear as he sees his five most prominent tormentors above him. "What was that for?!" he yells at them. That only earned him a stomp on his stomach from Astrid. "That is for nearly getting us killed in the ring today." she told him. Ruffnut and tuffnut brought him back up but only made him kneel on the ground while holding his arms out to the side. Snotlout punched him next in his rips. He could swear he heard something crack. "That was for being useless again." he taunted him laughing. The twins and Fishlegs joined him soon afterward. And for the next 20 minutes, he got beaten and taunted until they dropped him carelessly on the ground. "Hope that will you teach you a lesson that you will never be good enough to be a true Viking." Astrid told him as they walked away, leaving a bleeding and broken Hiccup on the floor.

After 5 Minutes of lying on the ground, he struggled to stand up, but he managed to get up. Slowly limping home, he opens the door and closes it behind him. Not bothering to make a fire, he dragged himself up the stairs until he remembered that the Nightfury said he couldn't fly anymore. He pulls out his journal and opens the sketch of the dragon. "maybe I can make you fly again..." he whispered.

With newfound determination, he drags himself out of the house and to the forge. When he was in the forge, he heated it and put the journal on his workbench with the Nightfury drawing open. He redraws the tailfin and gets to work with the goal in his mind.

After hours of work in the forge, he holds down a finished prosthetic tailfin. Glancing out the forge, he sees that it's still dark, so he decides to just sleep there. Putting out the forge and hiding the tailfin, he gets in his little workroom and puts some furs on the ground. Lying on the furs, he almost instantly fell asleep. This was the first day in a few years were he fell asleep with a smile on his face.

(the next morning)

Hiccup gets awakened by something shaking him. As he slowly opens his eyes, he sees Gobber looking at him with a worried face above him. "What happened to ya, lad? And why are you sleeping in the forge? I'm not angry at you, but I still want to know."

"Sorry, Gobber, I had a few 'accidents' yesterday, so don't worry about me; I've been through worse. And for why I was sleeping in the forge. Well, it was the closest, and I was exhausted." Hiccup answers hoping that Gobber wouldn't try to go after the teens. He knew that Gobber knew of his treatment but told him that he shouldn't do something because he was not worth it. Even though Gobber thinks otherwise, he respects Hiccup's wishes even when he doesn't understand them.

Sighing, Gobber helped him up and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Alright. But I wanted to tell you that dragon training was set to take place in the afternoon because I have to help the fishers with their work. So come to the ring at about 6:00p.m, alright?"

"I'll be there, Gobber. And thanks for you know what." Hiccup says as he watches Gobber leave and walk towards the docks. Now that he was awake, he could put his plan into motion. Picking up the tailfin, he heads back home and gets a basket of fish. It was hard for him to carry the tailfin AND a whole basket of fish through uneven terrain. After almost an hour of walking, it usually would have taken him about 20 minutes, but he was injured and carried a lot of weight; he finally reached the cove. "I'm here, Toothless." he says, panting heavily, falling to the ground and on his back.

Toothless seeing this, quickly made his way over to him with a worried croon. 'What happened to you?!' he asks, sniffing at him. 'Did you get beaten up by those five teens again? I swear I will make them pay!' he shouts angrily before starting to lick the boy, to which he groans "EWWW! Stop that!" he says, trying to get away but gets stopped when a pawn is gently placed on top of him and Toothless looking worried at him. 'Trust me, I know what I'm doing, so please let me help you.' Toothless said softly. Sighing, Hiccup lays back down and lets him work. After a minute, Toothless asked him to pull off his shirtn to which he complied. After Toothless was done, he put on his shirt again but noticed that his pain was almost gone. Shocked, he looked at the dragon, who only grinned at him, 'I told you I know what I was doing. Also, it is known that Nightfury saliva has healing properties. So what did you bring with you today?' he asks, mentioning with his head to the basket and the tailfin. "Fish. Eat up, and then I will tell you what the other thing is." Hiccup told him, to wich Toothless happily agreed. Suddenly Toothless gave a terrified screech and recoiled away from the basket.

"What is it!?" Hiccup asked, running over to him with a look of worry. "There's an eel in there!" Toothless yells at him."So you don't like eels?" "Eels are poisonous to dragons. Didn't you know that?" "No, not really." Hiccup walks to the basket and throws away the eel. After that, Toothless happily starts eating. When he was done, he walked over to Hiccup and the second thing he brought. Sitting down in front of him, he decides to ask.

"So, what else did you bring here?" Well, since I somehow am the reason for losing your flight-" "Just to let you know. I already forgave you." Toothless interrupts him. "How can you forgive me so easily?" "Otherwise, we wouldn't have met. Now don't talk about that and start explaining what that thing is." he said, nudging the prosthetic. "Alright, I thought about it and made you a new tailfin." Hiccup explains excitedly.

Toothless looked shocked at him. He thought that with the loss of his tailfin, he was pretty much dead. So to hear this boy say he made one was pretty unbelievable. But his expression turned from shocked to awe to happy when Hiccup showed him the prosthetic. "There's still one small problem with it. I don't know how to let you control it." Hiccup said with a saddened expression. He thought that Toothless would be devastated, but what he didn't expect was that the dragon would start licking him, "I don't care because I know you will figure out a way to make it work! You managed to make a tailfin without any flying experience, so I believe in you!" Toothless told him. "I might have an idea to make you fly again. But it will come with a cost." Hiccup said as an idea came to him. Toothless only nodded to show him that he could continue. "I could make it work... if I would be the one controlling it, which would mean I would have to be on your back. But I know that's uncomfortable, so just forget it." he quickly said. The following words from the dragon surprised him. "Then go with that idea! I would love to share the experience of flight with you!" Toothless happily exclaims. "Alright. Now I have some questions about how we can talk and to what in Thor's name happened yesterday. Can you explain that to me?" Hiccup asks.

"Fair enough. What we experienced was something called bonding. It's a special connection between two living beings. It usually only happens when two soulmates find each other and build a deep trust in each other. Since yesterday you trusted me, and I trusted you. The bonding started, which is why you saw my memories and I saw yours. I never heard that a human and a dragon bonded, but I guess there's a first to everything. Through the bonding, you can understand the language of dragons, but most dragons decide not to speak. So don't be surprised if you don't hear another dragon talk. Another thing that can happen with the bonding is that you could gain some of my abilities. Not like shooting fire but having better smell, hearing, and sight. Maybe you get my strength, but since I said it rarely happens at all, there's little known about it. The last thing is that you can only bond to one, but you can feel how the other feels, even if you don't see or hear them. So that's about all I know of it." Toothless finished. Hiccup just sat there, taking it all in. "Well, it's not every day that you find out that your soulmate is a dragon. But then again, I never really was a Viking." he said, shrugging.

Noticing the time, he turns to Toothless, "I got to go. I have to meet up with my mentor. Also, I never really told you my name. I'm Hiccup; I know it's a stupid name as it means 'runt of the litter' but hey, it's not the worst." he said shrugging. "Be careful. I don't really have a name, so you can keep calling me Toothless. That way, our names are not that different." Toothless said with a toothless grin. Hiccup hugged the dragon and started his walk back to the village.

So we finally got to the point where Toothless and Hiccup bonded. Let me know what you thought about it. See you next time!
